Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams Jan 2022

Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams

The Writing Center Journal

Writing center scholarship often highlights the ways in which their distinctive, less directive, nongraded, and individualized instruction can make them distinctive social and pedagogical spaces. There is a simultaneous argument, however, that writing centers are often institutionally vulnerable and may be unable to engage in or promote such differences within the larger college or university. Yet, despite their size and possible vulnerability, the daily practices and institutional positioning of writing centers can help change conversations and work toward a different vision, political approach, and institutional presence. Drawing on Victor Friedman’s concept of “enclaves of different practice” and Brian Massumi’s theories …

Department of Management Faculty Publications

Despite the importance of faculty diversity training for advancing an inclusive society, little research examines whether participation improves inclusion perceptions and belongingness. Integrating training and diversity education literature concepts, this study examines the effectiveness of training targeting microaggressions in six STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) oriented departments at a research-intensive university. Reactions data collected at the end of face-to-face training suggested that participation generally increased inclusion understanding. Self-assessments on inclusion concepts collected from 45% of participants before and three weeks after training suggest participation increases perceptions of the importance of inclusion, microaggression allyship awareness, inclusive behaviors, and organizational identification. Compared …

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Oct 2021

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

The Lactation at Work Law amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate employer accommodation of employees’ breast milk expression. Interviews with employees, human resource specialists, and supervising managers in nine industries found that some organizations’ supervising managers, who initially perceived accommodations only as a legal mandate furthering managerial goals, over time changed to understanding lactation accommodations through a children’s-health lens that created morality-driven motivations for legal compliance–a “moralization of the law.” Educational discussions with lactating employees not only provided these supervising managers with insights into lactation at work, but also sensitized them to ethical issues surrounding lactation accommodations.

Face‐To‐Face With The New: Libraries Readiness And Perspectives Towards The Changing Service Environment, Christine M. Abrigo, Efren M. Torres Jr.

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The new normal has changed the nature of work and services, and a library's readiness, considering these abrupt but mandatory changes, has challenged, and influenced their response to meet the demands of the new service environment. This paper seeks to explore how the library management in academic and school institutions has been adapting to this change, how their priorities have shifted in reinventing their action plans and innovative library responses, to ensure meeting new expectations to support the perceived needs of their communities, especially in the next normal future. It specifically probes into managing change in charting strategic plans, upper …

Minga Perú’S Strategy For Social Change In The Perúvian Amazon: A Rhetorical Model For Participatory, Intercultural Practice To Advance Human Rights, Lucia Durá, Arvind Singhal, Eliana Elías

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

Deep in the Peruvian Amazon, when Minga Perú’s radio production team receives a letter about spousal abuse, or any other burning topic, the letter is catalogued based on subject, audience relevance, and urgency. Listeners’ letters serve as the basis for creating the program scripts of Bienvenida Salud (Welcome Health), Minga’s long-running socio drama broadcast three times per week by ten jungle-reaching radio stations. In the program, Emira, Doñita, Peta, and Pasionaria bring social issues to life in a seriously playful and culturally-relevant manner, spurring conversation among listeners and subsequent decisions and actions. Minga has created a listener-as-producer feedback loop whereby …

How Change Management Is Influenced By Differences In Professional Discourses: A Conceptualizing Study On The Adoption Of An Ict Tool For Service Engineers In A Global Perspective, Jos Pieterse, Jan Ulijn, Thijs Homan

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

This article describes the process of organizational change due to technological evolutions, suggesting that community-specific differences in discourse may have a considerable influence on its success. The questions for this study focus on: 1) how do we define a technically oriented employee who has to cope with organizational change? 2) Which factors determine the reaction to organizational change projects in which these technically oriented employees are involved? And 3) what are the consequences of these specific characters of technically oriented employees for implementing change programs in the most effective manner? First, while the present studies on professional communication do not …

Editor's Introduction To The First Edition: Eight Needed Developments And Eight Critical Contexts For Global Inquiry, Barry Thatcher

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

In this introduction, I articulate critical gaps, needed developments, and opportunities for rhetoric and professional communication in global contexts. My tone is intentionally provocative and personal, laying out my positions and concerns based on almost 20 years of experience working in both rhetoric/professional communication and intercultural/global studies. In this introduction, I also demonstrate the power (and beauty) of intercultural and global inquiry to expose unexamined assumptions and problems in current theory, research, and practice in rhetoric and professional communication. The first section introduces eight needed developments for global theory, research, and practice, based on current approaches in rhetoric and professional …

Replicating Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Education, Martinus J. Buijvoets, Bob Walrave, Jukka-Matti Turtiainen, Gregory H. Watson Jun 2021

Replicating Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Education, Martinus J. Buijvoets, Bob Walrave, Jukka-Matti Turtiainen, Gregory H. Watson

International Conference on Lean Six Sigma

Purpose – This paper describes the intricates and possibilities of replicating a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB) education model from a pilot program to other universities—employing ‘replication as strategy’—based on a validated ‘business model.’

Study design/methodology/approach – This work is grounded in a case study on the ESTIEM LSSGB educational method and draws on the replication literature. Specifically: (1) replication as strategy (Winter and Szulanski, 2001) to replicate stimulating learning environments, and (2) replicating sets of teaching practices (Baden-Fuller and Winter, 2007). These theories are practiced using data obtained from various sources: Participant-observer data, interview data, and secondary case …

Improve Outcomes In Lean Six Sigma With Servant Leadership, David W. Hoffa, Chad Laux, Manal Alduraibi

International Conference on Lean Six Sigma

1. Purpose

The purpose of this study was to explore lean leadership within Lean Six Sigma (LSS). The objective of this paper was to explore how LSS program success might be improved by focusing Black Belt efforts on mentoring Green Belts with a servant leadership model. The importance of Green Belt projects is typically overlooked in the literature. The effects of prioritizing the development of Green Belts and building a culture of continuous improvement over the traditional Black Belt project focus is explored.

2. Design/Methodology/Approach

The methodology of this paper is inspired by the authors’ field experiences in managing LSS …

Begin At The Beginning: Revamping Collection Development Workflows, Elyssa M. Gould, Jennifer Mezick Oct 2020

Begin At The Beginning: Revamping Collection Development Workflows, Elyssa M. Gould, Jennifer Mezick

Charleston Library Conference

“Begin at the beginning,” the King said, very gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” This paper describes how two librarians newer to the University of Tennessee Libraries refreshed collection development workflows at the Libraries after a reorganization. This reorganization distributed tasks across departments in a different manner due to the new departmental configurations. In this new matrix environment, more communication was required to achieve desired outcomes, but more buy-in was also needed from constituents such as the subject librarians. This paper describes how a new Collections Committee was formed to make decisions on high-dollar …

Inclusive Infrastructure: Digital Scholarship Centers And The Academic Library Liaison, Matthew Hannah, Erla Heyns, Rick Mulligan Jun 2020

Inclusive Infrastructure: Digital Scholarship Centers And The Academic Library Liaison, Matthew Hannah, Erla Heyns, Rick Mulligan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

A paradox exists in the building and managing of digital scholarship centers in academic libraries. While imagined as collaborative library spaces, such centers often remain “siloed” from the subject specialists who work with departments to build collections, assess critical needs, and collaborate with faculty and students. In this article, the authors argue that such a silo effect contributes to a sense of separation, skepticism, and even resentment toward digital scholarship initiatives and fails to utilize the full expertise of the academic research library. Interviewing the directors of fifteen digital scholarship centers located in libraries, the authors assess the current ecosystem …

Social Scientists’ Testimony Before Congress In The United States Between 1946-2016, Trends From A New Dataset, Thomas V. Maher, Charles Seguin, Yongjun Zhang, Andrew P. Davis

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Congressional hearings are a venue in which social scientists present their views and analyses before lawmakers in the United States, however quantitative data on their representation has been lacking. We present new, publicly available, data on the rates at which anthropologists, economists, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists appeared before United States congressional hearings from 1946 through 2016. We show that social scientists were present at some 10,347 hearings and testified 15,506 times. Economists testify before the US Congress far more often than other social scientists, and constitute a larger proportion of the social scientists testifying in industry and government positions. …

Simplifying The Collections Budget To Maximize Flexibility And Increase Responsiveness To User Needs, Denise Koufogiannakis, Denise Pan Oct 2019

Simplifying The Collections Budget To Maximize Flexibility And Increase Responsiveness To User Needs, Denise Koufogiannakis, Denise Pan

Charleston Library Conference

This paper considers management of the collections budget via fund structures. A common approach in collections budget management is to distribute allocations via format (e.g., monograph and serials), and subject areas. While tracking spending at a granular level provides more information, it also generally results in a large number of funds. As more and more materials are purchased in consortial packages or other types of "big deals,” or are simply interdisciplinary in nature, the allocation and expenditure on specific and narrowly defined funds begins to become inaccurate and less useful. Library administrators from two large Association of Research Libraries (ARL) …

Allies Already Poised To Comply: How Social Proximity Affects Lactation-At-Work Law Compliance, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Feb 2019

Allies Already Poised To Comply: How Social Proximity Affects Lactation-At-Work Law Compliance, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

This study demonstrates how legal compliance may be better achieved when organizations include individuals who will advocate for newly codified rights and related accommodations. To understand compliance with a new law and the rights it confers, this article examines as its case study the Lactation at Work law, which amends the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate basic provisions for employees to express breast milk at work. In particular, this study interviewed those organizational actors who translate the law into the policies affecting workers' daily lives: supervising mangers and human resources personnel. Those studied in this article were “Allies Already:” …

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund Dec 2018

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Challenges occur as research typically require “just in time” library support. The evolution of a research project may lead to sudden changes in coordination between different phases or steps in the project. Consequentially, the need for flexible research support conflicts the possibilities for long-term resource planning and coordination in the library. Moreover, these consequences will enlarge in a situation with resource scarcity. The aim of my presentation is to address some challenges posed by the time-logic inherent in research projects, based on experiences from the literature search team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (formerly HIOA, Oslo and Akershus University …

Courage And Co-Creation: Cultural Transformation In An Academic Library, Catherine Clark, Carolyn Hofmeester, Jane Pritchard Dec 2018

Courage And Co-Creation: Cultural Transformation In An Academic Library, Catherine Clark, Carolyn Hofmeester, Jane Pritchard

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

University libraries are transforming to be vibrant and distinctive online and physical spaces that, at their heart, continue to foster the connection of people to ideas. Rapid and continuously changing expectations of clients in the range of services that are delivered by libraries, combined with increasingly demanding resourcing environments are challenges for all library leaders. A library staff culture that is energised, focused and resilient is essential to ensure that service expectations are met or exceeded and that the library retains its valued position in the university. The University Librarian at Curtin University in Australia has initiated and led a …

Innovation, Entrepreneurship, And The Spirit Of Digital Capitalism, Collin Chua Dec 2018

Innovation, Entrepreneurship, And The Spirit Of Digital Capitalism, Collin Chua

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and the Spirit of Digital Capitalism,”Collin Chua analyzes the myth of innovation and the fantasy of entrepreneurship. The article draws on foundational perspectives regarding the spirit of capitalism established by Max Weber, later extended by Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello. The myth of innovation is interrogated, as innovation now operates as a rhetorical and managerial strategy that must be pursued in order to be competitive in today’s capitalist system. The fantasy of entrepreneurship is explored, as it serves as a coping mechanism for the fragmentation and erosion of traditional work arrangements and structures. The article …

Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Kathy Bradshaw Sep 2018

Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Kathy Bradshaw

Charleston Library Conference

With the constantly changing landscape in 21st-century libraries, it would seem that professional development would be more important than ever. However, research indicates that few libraries have formal professional development programs, and there are mixed messages from library leaders regarding the necessity and importance of professional development. It is no secret that libraries always seem to be facing budget cuts, and funding for professional development is often seen as a low priority. We were curious to understand how professional development is viewed and executed in other academic libraries.

Professional development means different things to different people. To some, professional development …

Who Are We Now? Examining Internal Organizational Communication During Crisis, Elizabeth England

Open Access Theses

Organizational Communication scholars have thoroughly researched communicative processes and phenomena during times of organizational crisis. However, little research aims to understand the extremely important employee perspective during such hardships. In this study, through in-depth qualitative interviews, I investigated employees’ reports of their roles in renegotiating organizational identity, preferred sensemaking tactics, and dissemination of communication during their company’s private financial crisis. I found employees generally failed to recognize their roles in renegotiating organizational identity, instead viewing organizational identity maintenance as a responsibility of leadership. Employees also reported engaging in a number of sensemaking tactics to understand their crisis situation, such as …

Social Brokerage, Psychology, And Innovation In Intra-Organizational Networks, Hongzhi Chen Aug 2018

Social Brokerage, Psychology, And Innovation In Intra-Organizational Networks, Hongzhi Chen

Open Access Dissertations

As an important organizational phenomenon, brokerage is common in any group of three or more. A recent meta-analysis shows that brokerage is one of the most influential network properties to individual innovativeness (Baer, Evans, Oldham, & Boasso, 2015). This dissertation investigates the impacts of social brokerage on the micro-foundation of corporate innovation, i.e., generating new projects and getting new things done. In addressing the social psychological foundations of brokerage (Tasselli, Kilduff, & Menges, 2015), this dissertation investigates the influential contexts around the broker and revisits the “human agency” issue in brokerage phenomena in the setting of corporate innovation.

Employing A User-Centered Design Process For Cybersecurity Awareness In The Power Grid, Jean C. Scholtz, Lyndsey Franklin, Aditya Ashok, Katya Leblanc, Christopher Bonebrake, Eric Andersen, Michael Cassiadoro

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In this paper, we discuss the process we are using in the design and implementation of a tool to improve the situation awareness of cyberattacks in the power grid. We provide details of the steps we have taken to date and describe the steps that still need to be accomplished. The focus of this work is to provide situation awareness of the power grid to staff from different, non-overlapping roles in an electrical transmission organization in order to facilitate an understanding of a possible occurrence of a cyberattack. Our approach follows a user-centered design process and includes determining the types …
