The Adverse Impact Of Remote Command And Control Under Live Fire, Kip Smith Oct 2003

The Adverse Impact Of Remote Command And Control Under Live Fire, Kip Smith

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The US Army is planning a shift in the mode of command and control between soldiers and their battlefield leaders. Soldiers will receive orders from afar through electronic means of communication. This practice is known as remote command and control. Reliance on remote command and control has the potential to erode trust between soldiers and their leaders and should, we hypothesize, slow soldiers' response times to commands to move and to shoot. We have conducted two field experiments to test this hypothesis (Pangburn, Freund, Pangburn, & Smith, 2003). Our laboratory was a paintball assault lane. While a paintball lane is …

Institutional Issues Related To The Application Of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems Technologies To Commercial Vehicle Operations In Indiana, James G. Kavalaris, Kumares C. Sinha May 1994

Institutional Issues Related To The Application Of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems Technologies To Commercial Vehicle Operations In Indiana, James G. Kavalaris, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

The study focused on potential barriers and opportunities to implementing Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS) technologies to Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) in Indiana. Specific concepts included: (1) Automatic payment of tolls while driving at mainline speeds; (2) Pre-Clearance of vehicles and drivers past weigh stations; (3) "One-Stop-Shopping" for licenses, registrations, and permits; and (4) Transparent state borders. The study reviewed existing laws and policies applying to commercial vehicles operating in Indiana; prepared an inventory of the agencies responsible, their existing procedures, their physical facilities, and their human resources used to implement these regulations; itemized present impediments preventing the implementation of IVHS-CVO …

Development Of A Strategy For Compliance With Epa And Osha Regulation Application To Indot Facilities, Lynn A. Corson

JTRP Technical Reports

Between March 1990 and November 1992, a sample of 27 field and support facilities operated by the Indiana Department of Transportation were visited by staff of the Environmental Management and education Program, School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University, for the purpose of conducting workplace assessments to ascertain the department’s compliance with federal and state environmental and worker protection regulations. Thirty-eight different department operations and nine different employee functions were observed and analyzed. There were compliance areas at every facility visited which needed strengthening. A total of 222 recommendations for strengthening those areas are included in the research report. The department …

Diversification Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller Jan 1994

Diversification Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study develops and tests a behavioral model of diversification responses to environmental uncertainties. Regression results using an international data set provide strong support for the general proposition that uncertainties associated with different environmental components--political, government policy, macroeconomic, competitive, input, and product demand uncertainties--have different implications for firm product and international market diversification.

Operational Flexibility Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller Jan 1994

Operational Flexibility Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study develops and tests a behavioral model of organizational changes in operational flexibility. Regression results using an international data set provide strong support for the general proposition that uncertainties associated with different environmental components--poitical, government policy, macroeconomic, competitive, input and product demand uncertainties--have different implications for firm internal, locational, and supploer flexibility. Slack acts as a buffer attenuating, and often offsetting, the direct effects of uncertainties on changes in operational flexibility.

The Mediating Effects Of Organization Commitment And Job Involvement On The Relationship Between Quality Of Work Life And Customer Service Attitudes, John Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Cheng-Chen Lin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In the last two decades, organizations have recognized, indeed fixated upon, the importance of quality and quality management. One manifestation of this is the emergence of the total quality management (TQM) movement, which has been proclaimed as the latest and optimal way of managing organizations. Likewise, in the domain of human resource management, the concept of quality of work life (QWL) has also received much attention of late from theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners. However, little has been done to build a bridge between these two increasingly important concepts, QWL and TQM. The purpose of this research is to empirically examine …

Information Services - An Overlooked Component In The Third World Decision Making Process - Experiences From Unesco Missions, Björn V. Tell Apr 1981

Information Services - An Overlooked Component In The Third World Decision Making Process - Experiences From Unesco Missions, Björn V. Tell

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The growth of the so called knowledge industries in the industrialized countries is a trend that has no visible traits in the Third World. The insight about the role of knowledge and information as important components in policy making has not come to surface. Also other components for the decision making process, such as skilled manpower , equipment, energy and dynamism may be lacking. However, together these components form a complex that can help to improve the quality of the decision making process.

Few of the less developed countries - the LDCs - realize that knowledge and information could transpire …
