Innovations In Self-Consciousness. Towards Oneness With The World, Soon-Ok Myong, Byong-Soon Chun

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Innovations in Self-Consciousness. Towards Oneness with the World" Soon-ok Myong and Byong-soon Chun examine the limitations and vulnerabilities of modern civilization. Asia is a multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural territory of over 40 countries and more than 4.4 billion people, that is, almost half of the population of the world. The One Asia community seeks to question a world made up of strong egos that make up businesses, organization and nations, and embrace communal goals, helping Asia and the world to become 'one community.' Thus, the paper suggests ways of self-innovation through forms of transitional consciousness. Although the …

Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud May 2018

Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud

Education and Culture

This article explores the contours of the Indian pragmatist Bhimrao Ambedkar and his reconstruction of Buddhism in the 1950s. As a student of John Dewey at Columbia University, young Ambedkar was heavily influenced by the pragmatist ideas of democracy and reconstruction. Throughout his life he would continue to evoke Dewey’s words and ideas in his fight against caste injustice in India. This article explores the possibility that Ambedkar could have been influenced by Dewey’s work, “Creative Democracy—The Task Before Us.” In exploring the intriguing evidence that points toward such an influence, Ambedkar’s The Buddha and His Dhamma emerges as a …

Touch Screen Assessment Of At-Risk Infant Comprehension, Rachel Elizabeth Hahn Arkenberg May 2018

Touch Screen Assessment Of At-Risk Infant Comprehension, Rachel Elizabeth Hahn Arkenberg

Open Access Theses

Purpose: There are few clinical tools available to productively assess comprehension in children under 20 months. The Computerized Comprehension Task (CCT) is a valid and reliable measure (Friend and Keplinger, 2003), but it has never been studied in children who are at risk for speech and language disorders. This study seeks to measure the effectiveness of the CCT in assessing high risk infants and evaluate the relationship between scores on the CCT and performance on a standardized language measure 6 months later. Method: Eleven high risk infants (categorized as “high risk” for genetic risk factors or pre-term birth) and eleven …

The Acquisition Of Obligatory And Variable Subjunctive Mood Selection In Temporal And Concessive Clauses In Heritage And L2 Spanish, Eduardo Lustres May 2018

The Acquisition Of Obligatory And Variable Subjunctive Mood Selection In Temporal And Concessive Clauses In Heritage And L2 Spanish, Eduardo Lustres

Open Access Theses

The current study examines the acquisition of the obligatory and variable subjunctive mood selection in epistemic adverbial clauses by L2 learners and heritage speakers (HSs) of Spanish. The acquisition of the Spanish subjunctive shows significant variability among both L2 learners (e.g., Borgonovo, Bruhn de Garavito, & Prévost, 2008; Sánchez-Naranjo, 2009) and heritage speakers of Spanish (e.g., Potowski, Jegerski, & Morgan-Short, 2009). Several studies comparing L2 learners and heritage speakers show that heritage speakers outperform L2 learners at low and intermediate levels (e.g., Montrul & Perpiñán, 2011). Some studies claim that differences between HSs and L2 learners can be explained because …

A Snapshot Of Vocabulary Recycling: How German Language Textbooks Treat Vocabulary, Kailey Preston May 2018

A Snapshot Of Vocabulary Recycling: How German Language Textbooks Treat Vocabulary, Kailey Preston

Open Access Theses

This study is an investigation into vocabulary recycling in beginning-level German language textbooks. Vocabulary recycling, or the reuse of previously introduced vocabulary words, is important in foreign language education because several “meetings” with a word (up to sixteen), both within a few days and across a longer period of time, are required for successful acquisition of a word (Pimsleur, 1967; Saragi, Nation & Meister, 1978; Nation, 2001). Attention to vocabulary recycling in the sphere of foreign language education is fairly new. However, investigations in Spanish and EFL contexts found that vocabulary recycling is largely insufficient and that instructors are aware …

Responsibly Persuaded: An Exploration Of The Ethics Of Persuasive Technology, Joseph E. Price May 2018

Responsibly Persuaded: An Exploration Of The Ethics Of Persuasive Technology, Joseph E. Price

Open Access Theses

The pervasiveness of technology comes with an increased risk for negative outcomes. Responsibility must fall upon designers to anticipate problems and guarantee positive outcomes. The concept of design character is the basis from which they assume responsibility. The goal of this study was twofold. First, I sought to understand how designers persuade users or stakeholders, and through what means. Second, I sought to critically evaluate aspect of persuasive design through the lens of ethics and values. This study provides an understanding of the criteria and philosophies of ethics relied upon to evaluate persuasive technology. To address both research goals, a …

A Lexically Driven Taxonomy For Political Campaign Interactions On Twitter, Joshua Curth May 2018

A Lexically Driven Taxonomy For Political Campaign Interactions On Twitter, Joshua Curth

Open Access Theses

Political candidates continuously develop new techniques for communicating to their targeted publics effectively through social media. One way to do so is through Twitter. This exploratory study maps Aristotelian rhetorical appeals to electoral tweets issued in the 2016 presidential election. Using automatic and human coding, the study proposes four different types of Twitter rhetorical appeals. Results show 58.8% of tweets issued during the presidential election are captured by the rhetorical taxonomy. The findings also show that the primary appeals both candidates use in both mass and salience did not always influence intention to vote. Finally, there are correlations between contextually …

The Importance Of Power, Distance, And Imposition On Spanish Verb Forms In Requests, Bruno Staszkiewicz Garcia May 2018

The Importance Of Power, Distance, And Imposition On Spanish Verb Forms In Requests, Bruno Staszkiewicz Garcia

Open Access Theses

This thesis analyzed the production of requests through the framework of Politeness Theory and the variables of power, distance, and imposition (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Research on Spanish has focused on Spanish requests (e.g. Placencia, 1998; Lorenzo Díaz, 2016) or cross-cultural analyses of requests (e.g. Blum-Kulka, House & Kasper, 1989; Márquez-Reiter, 2000). However, the lack of balance in the contexts examined regarding the social variables power, distance, and imposition makes it difficult to compare the effect of these variables on the request norms. Furthermore, requests likely vary according to other contextual factors as well, but this has received little systematic …

Police In Crisis, Communities In Conflict: A Computer-Aided Model For Analyzing Reconciliatory Tone, Cody Blake Wilson

Open Access Theses

Crises triggered by the officer-involved shootings of Black men were compounded by poor initial press conferences led by police and city leaders. However, these moments are ripe for the use of a reconciliatory tone, as speakers find themselves not only responding to the present crisis, but a history of crises between police and communities of color. Three recent, prominent cases are chosen as case studies for inquiry: the case of Ferguson Police Department, North Charleston Police Department, and Tulsa Police Department. A reconciliatory tone model using the DICTION text analysis program and conceptual network analysis is used alongside qualitative review …

Cross-Linguistic Influence Of Loanwords On Japanese Particle Processing: Evidence From Japanese Language Learners, Ryosuke Yamamoto May 2018

Cross-Linguistic Influence Of Loanwords On Japanese Particle Processing: Evidence From Japanese Language Learners, Ryosuke Yamamoto

Open Access Theses

Studies have proposed that the spreading activation (SA) theory (Colins, & Loftus, 1975) can explain the nature of L1 and L2 predictive sentence processing (e.g., Kaan, 2014). Research on processing in L2 English has found that word information triggers learners’ semantically-driven predictive sentence processing (e.g., Hopp, 2015); however, to the best of my knowledge, few studies have been conducted in L2 Japanese. Additionally, what triggers L2 predictive sentence processing is yet to be fully discovered. Research has demonstrated that L1 English learners of Japanese as a foreign language (JFL) show cognate-like effects when English-based loanwords are used as primes in …

Lexical Access And Cross-Linguistic Influence In Trilingual Language Switching, Boris Yelin May 2018

Lexical Access And Cross-Linguistic Influence In Trilingual Language Switching, Boris Yelin

Open Access Dissertations

Recent psycholinguistic research has explored language switching in bilingual populations to understand how language is stored in the mind. Whereas the bilingual analysis has been useful, multilingual switching may provide more nuanced details about how the multilingual lexicon (vocabulary) is cognitively organized and how languages interact during speech. This dissertation examines the structure of the multilingual lexicon in two ways: (1) reaction time and carrier phrase duration measures are examined to provide evidence of trilingual lexical access when language switching in connected speech; (2) cross-linguistic influence in trilingual production is examined as evidence of the organization of the lexicon. The …

Nooses & Balancing Acts: Reflections And Advice On Racism And Antiracism From Black Writing Tutors At Predominantly White Institutions, Talisha Haltiwanger Morrison

Open Access Dissertations

Over the past 10-15 years, writing center scholars have acknowledged the significance of race to writing center work and examined the ways racism manifests within writing center spaces and practices. More recently, conversations have shifted from acknowledging racism to how to combat it through antiracist activism. However, due to the demographics of the field, the voices most often contributing to these conversations are white scholars, many of them directors at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). This study positions Black writing tutors as individuals with expertise to share on how to engage in antiracism through writing center work that stems from their …

As the U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve sets U.S. monetary policy (i.e., control of the money supply and management of the inflation rate, economic growth, and price stability) through the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and serves as a lender of last resort. A major actor in the U.S. economic system, it is dispersed geographically across the United States and contains many branches. The chairman of the Federal Reserve communicates on behalf of the entire system before Congress, makes a statement after FOMC meetings, and gives speeches and lectures on economic status and related economic topics.

Yet there is …

Analysis And Automated Discovery Of Attacks In Transport Protocols, Samuel C. Jero May 2018

Analysis And Automated Discovery Of Attacks In Transport Protocols, Samuel C. Jero

Open Access Dissertations

Transport protocols like TCP and QUIC are a crucial component of today’s Internet, underlying services as diverse as email, file transfer, web browsing, video conferencing, and instant messaging as well as infrastructure protocols like BGP and secure network protocols like TLS. Transport protocols provide a variety of important guarantees like reliability, in-order delivery, and congestion control to applications. As a result, the design and implementation of transport protocols is complex, with many components, special cases, interacting features, and efficiency considerations, leading to a high probability of bugs. Unfortunately, today the testing of transport protocols is mainly a manual, ad-hoc process. …

British Essentialism In Eighteenth-Century British Travel Literature Of The West Indies And North America, Stephanie Matos-Ayala May 2018

British Essentialism In Eighteenth-Century British Travel Literature Of The West Indies And North America, Stephanie Matos-Ayala

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores issues of representation and cultural negotiation by examining how the white colonial other was depicted in eighteenth-century travel literature, specifically Janet Schaw’s Journal of a Lady of Quality written during the years 1774 to 1776. Travel narratives and histories speak to many different topics, yet they reveal the most about eighteenth-century British ways of thinking about race and national identity, more so than about the various peoples and cultures they seek to describe. I argue that this literature reveals a hierarchy based on the absorption and consumption of British practices and goods by the colonial subject. Neither …

The Effectiveness Of Visual Input Enhancement Across Multiple Proficiency Levels On The Noticing And L2 Development Of German Vocabulary And Reading, Christopher La Cross May 2018

The present study investigates the effectiveness of visual input enhancement across multiple proficiency levels on the noticing and L2 development of German vocabulary and reading. The study addresses several methodological issues in the extant literature and uses a complex organization to investigate possible differences in the effectiveness of visual input enhancement, a frequently used technique in L2 reading, across multiple proficiency levels in a typical L2 classroom setting at the university level. The study reveals that little to no differences exist across proficiency level and text level and that visual input enhancement, as is so often employed, has extremely limited …

Calderón's Musical Message: The Importance Of The Auditory Over The Visual, Laura Ramiro Moreno May 2018

Calderón's Musical Message: The Importance Of The Auditory Over The Visual, Laura Ramiro Moreno

Open Access Dissertations

Calderón de la Barca, a highly philosophical and religious playwright, focused the final part of his career on experimenting with musical court theater. My dissertation explains the motivation behind Calderón’s implementation of music in his theatrical productions and the situation that led him to create the new dramatic genre of zarzuela. This project analyzes the evolution of early modern musical theater in Spain by observing musical elements that are reflected in the text and related to characters and themes in the plays. A reflection on musical conventions in European theater, through the use of cognitive theories, studies on music and …

Latent Representation And Sampling In Network: Application In Text Mining And Biology., Tanay Kumar Saha May 2018

Latent Representation And Sampling In Network: Application In Text Mining And Biology., Tanay Kumar Saha

Open Access Dissertations

In classical machine learning, hand-designed features are used for learning a mapping from raw data. However, human involvement in feature design makes the process expensive. Representation learning aims to learn abstract features directly from data without direct human involvement. Raw data can be of various forms. Network is one form of data that encodes relational structure in many real-world domains. Therefore, learning abstract features for network units is an important task. In this dissertation, we propose models for incorporating temporal information given as a collection of networks from subsequent time-stamps. The primary objective of our models is to learn a …

Revisiting Rustow: An Empirical Assessment Of The Relationship Between National Identity And Attitudes Towards Democracy In Post-Soviet Russia, John P. Schultz May 2018

Revisiting Rustow: An Empirical Assessment Of The Relationship Between National Identity And Attitudes Towards Democracy In Post-Soviet Russia, John P. Schultz

Open Access Dissertations

Does national identity influence a country’s prospects for democratization? Brudny and Finkel (2011) contend that national identity explains variation in the political developments among former Soviet states. In considering this argument, this effort examines the empirical evidence to determine 1) whether a measurable model of national identity has developed within Russia, 2) how this national identity has developed over time, and 3) whether a relationship exists between this intersubjectively held conception of national identity and attitudes towards democracy. Findings suggest the development and ongoing contestation of two competing conceptions of national identity that covary with changing attitudes towards democracy over …

A Pragmatic Methodology For The (Queer) Self, Elaine M. Blum May 2018

A Pragmatic Methodology For The (Queer) Self, Elaine M. Blum

Open Access Dissertations

Taking LGBTIA+ experiences as the starting point for theorizing, I propose that pragmatic methodologies ameliorate several problems that queer theory encounters in defining queer subjectivity. The challenge is that any definition of queer selfhood must simultaneously (i) elude essential or fixed definitions of the subject, gender, and the relationship between them, and nonetheless (ii) enable efficacious political action and recognition. Utilizing the work of John Dewey and Jane Addams, I argue that the social self provides a beneficial framework for accommodating and celebrating queer lives. Adopting a pragmatic methodology emphasizes the irreducible plurality of perspectives and develops theory out of …

Using Tangible Interaction And Virtual Reality To Support Spatial Perspective Taking Ability, Shen-Kuen Chang May 2018

Using Tangible Interaction And Virtual Reality To Support Spatial Perspective Taking Ability, Shen-Kuen Chang

Open Access Dissertations

According to several large-scale and longitudinal studies, spatial ability, one of the primary mental abilities, has been shown as a significant predictor for STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and career success. Frameworks in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and TEI (Tangible and Embodied Interaction) also indicated how the spatial-related aspects of interaction are a common design theme for interfaces using emerging technologies. However, currently only very few interactive systems (using TEI) are designed around a target spatial ability. TEI’s direct effects on spatial ability are also not well-investigated. Meanwhile, a growing body of research from cognitive sciences, such as embodied …
