Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1984

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Louis XIV during the fifty-five years of his personal reign (1661-1715) created the institutional foundations for the science and technology of France. These institutions were outwardly an attempt both to meet the needs of the French state for technical advice and to provide professional scientists with the necessary support for pure scientific research. In a less obvious sense, the origin and evolution of these institutions represented an attempt on the part of the monarchy to disentangle the pursuit of knowledge from the prevailing system of political patronage and from the political and religious speculation that fed the social conflicts of …

Systems Versus Users: An Analysis Of The Art And/Or Science Of Search Negotiations, Kathleen T. Bivins Apr 1981

Systems Versus Users: An Analysis Of The Art And/Or Science Of Search Negotiations, Kathleen T. Bivins

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper discusses the nature of information retrieval, its particular problems, and information retrieval systems in general. Traditional efforts in search analysis and question negotiation are presented, along with a sample of the numerous techniques of automated search manipulation. The newer methods involving the cognitive approach are discussed, and conclusions are drawn regarding the status of the situation and the possible future.

Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen Apr 1981

Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The information explosion of the last century has had profound effects upon the entire society: The number of publications has increased enormously, and important consequences have been the development of bibliographic tools, of libraries and an improved cooperation between libraries. Computer technology has made a storage of bibliographic information in big, international data bases possible, and complex networks are now being established. As bibliographies and catalogues in their paper-ver si ons thus are disappearing, other sorts of literature are going to be replaced by on-line accessible data bases, and telephone directories, sales catalogues etc. are soon to disappear in their …

Poster Sessions As A New Viewpoint Of Scientific Communication - General Problems And Library Aspects, Dieter Schmidmaier Apr 1981

Poster Sessions As A New Viewpoint Of Scientific Communication - General Problems And Library Aspects, Dieter Schmidmaier

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the true sense the word POSTER designates a free, mostly decorative artistic form using displaying means of expression and being published in large editions.

POSTERS are already found in feudalism. Today they represent a popular branch of art and are frequently used for different decorating purposes, e.g. in rooms.

POSTER SESSIONS have made their way into scientific communication.

Scientific events, as conferences, congresses, symposia, colloquies, round tables etc. may be, are special ways of communieation. The advantages of such events {called conferences for short) are

  • the actuality of the information given
  • the possibility of an immediate exchange of ideas. …

Application Of Bibliometrics In Technical University Libraries, Dieter Schmidmaier May 1977

Application Of Bibliometrics In Technical University Libraries, Dieter Schmidmaier

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

By the science of science by scientometrics (1) is meant the application of exact measuring methods in the investigation of scientific systems. In this, measuring (2) is the member connecting observation with mathematics and allowing the formulation of quantitative theories. In the individual scientific systems there developed subjects of research dealing with metric methods - in chemistry stoichiometry, in the biological sciences biometrics, in sociology sociometry. The scientific systems dealing with the registration and evaluation of printed publications play an important part in the success of scientometric works, because the results obtained in the course of development of the sciences …

Tree System Approach For Landsat Data Interpretation, R. Y. Li, K. S. Fu Jan 1976

Tree System Approach For Landsat Data Interpretation, R. Y. Li, K. S. Fu

LARS Symposia

This paper describes a tree system approach which interpretates highways and rivers from LANDSAT pictures. The basic definitions of tree grammars and tree automaton and a grammatical inference procedure are first introduced. The interpretation process is conceived as a process of continuous verification of the hypothesized descriptions of objects in the picture. The LANDSAT imagery map of Lafayette, Indiana is used as a training data set and tree grammar is inferred from the interpretation process. The versatility of this set of syntactic rules is tested on a different data set and the initial results are reported.

Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns Jan 1975

Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns

LARS Symposia

The results of observing the radiation from lightning discharge processes by William L. Taylor has indicated that radio frequency electrical activity was associated with the tornado producing severe storms that struck Oklahoma City during April, 1970. This paper reports our findings as the result of analyzing Taylor's' atmospherics rate data employing the techniques of time series analysis and pattern recognition. It shows the promise that sferics rate data can be used to establish unique signatures for the task of forecasting various severe weather patterns, however an extensive analysis of more data is needed before affirmative conclusions can be drawn.

Deriving Spectral And Spatial Features To Establish A Hierarchical Classification System, James E. Skaley, Randolph J. Hoffman Oct 1973

Deriving Spectral And Spatial Features To Establish A Hierarchical Classification System, James E. Skaley, Randolph J. Hoffman

LARS Symposia

Automatic processing of remotely sensed data has to date been constrained to using training sets to classify a small number of categories within the context of a limited geographical area.

In order to promote a more flexible user-oriented data processing system, a hierarchical taxonomic structure is proposed. This structure incorporates data inputs from several different sensors together with a priori information on the characteristics of different materials of interest to facilitate efficient design of feature sets to classify those materials. A Boolean approach may be used to assign these feature sets including both spectral and spatial criteria to different hierarchical …
