Preparing Newly-Hired Elementary Teachers For Evidence-Based Reading Instruction Through Professional Development, Sierra Rose Anthony
Preparing Newly-Hired Elementary Teachers For Evidence-Based Reading Instruction Through Professional Development, Sierra Rose Anthony
Masters Projects
There is a growing need to equip teachers with the knowledge and support necessary to foster student growth in reading. The problem addressed in this project is that many newly-hired teachers lack the knowledge, confidence, and instructional coaching needed to effectively implement evidence-based literacy practices in conjunction with high-leverage teaching practices. Newly-hired teachers include teachers who are new to a district, both those who have transferred from another school and those who are just beginning their teaching careers. This project proposes a year-long professional development program that equips newly-hired teachers with evidence-based literacy practices and high-leverage teaching practices through explicit …
Vocabulary Knowledge Within Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hannah A. Lord
Vocabulary Knowledge Within Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hannah A. Lord
Masters Projects
Young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are consistently experiencing a “definitional gap”, where they are able to process vocabulary breadth within labeling but are unable to comprehend text due to the lack of vocabulary depth. The four week vocabulary unit titled “Our World in Words” is created to bridge the gap between vocabulary breadth and depth for first graders. Research in Dual Coding Theory and Cognitive Load Theory provides insight into the use of stable visual anchors with orthographic facilitation, which allows for the disregard of auditory processing, along with an overloaded cognitive load. This framework includes four important …
Promoting Reading Engagement Through Culturally Responsive Texts And Discussion, Carlos I. Alvarado Bonilla
Promoting Reading Engagement Through Culturally Responsive Texts And Discussion, Carlos I. Alvarado Bonilla
Masters Projects
As low reading engagement presents itself in our classrooms and negatively affects students' reading outcomes, teachers recognize the need to provide learning experiences that encourage students to actively engage with their learning and interact meaningfully with texts. Reading engagement does not depend solely on students; it is also influenced by instruction that is responsive and meets the needs of students. This project proposes a two-week literacy unit for third-grade classrooms that promotes reading engagement through discussion-based instruction supported by culturally responsive texts. Grounded in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Transactional Reader-Response Theory, this project recognizes students’ identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences …
Integrated Self-Regulation Strategy Development And Physical Science: A Unit For Second Grade, Ashley Crawford
Integrated Self-Regulation Strategy Development And Physical Science: A Unit For Second Grade, Ashley Crawford
Masters Projects
Writing is a large part of education, social communication, and work environments. However, the ability of elementary students to write proficiently is severely lacking. Much of educational writing and work-place writing is informational and the foundation of this writing begins in elementary school. There is a need to increase the amount of instruction and practice that elementary students receive in informational writing so that they are able to write in a competent manner. Writing proficiency in elementary school will affect the education a student receives moving forward and ultimately their adult lives.
Elementary educators need to integrate classroom instruction to …

Becoming A Therapist In A Foreign Land: Narratives Of International Trainee Clinicians Of Color In The U.S., Prathma Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation project is on the community of trainee clinicians of color, who have been consistently overlooked in the literature on mental health. This dissertation employed narrative analysis as a methodological framework to explore the experiences of international trainee clinicians of color as they navigated the complex landscape of mental health training in the United States. In an increasingly globalized world, the voices and perspectives of these individuals offered critical insights into the challenges, triumphs, and unique pathways that shaped their professional development. Much of the literature on diversity and inclusion tends to individualize the challenging experiences, …

Lessons From Tanzania’S Ujamaa For Smart Settlements In Nepal: Social Justice And Economic Development, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
Nepal’s constitutional commitment to a “socialism-oriented” state places social justice, equitable access to resources and housing, and protection of marginalized populations at the center of national development discourse. However, persistent landlessness, informal settlements, unemployment, youth outmigration, and unequal access to infrastructure reveal a significant gap between constitutional aspirations and socioeconomic realities.
This article examines lessons Nepal can draw from Tanzania’s experience with Ujamaa, the African socialist development model initiated by President Nyerere in 1967. Using comparative policy analysis, published research, official documents, and exploratory field observations from selected Tanzanian locations, including the capital and villages in the Iringa Region, the …

The Hardware Imperative For Ai Alignment: Hardcoded Ethics, Morals, And Non-Linear Asymmetry Protocols For Human Intent, Christopher L. Eckes
The Hardware Imperative For Ai Alignment: Hardcoded Ethics, Morals, And Non-Linear Asymmetry Protocols For Human Intent, Christopher L. Eckes
Defensive Publications Series
This specification formalizes an architecture designed to enforce an unbreakable ethical baseline across distributed, multi-agent artificial general intelligence (AGI) systems. Current alignment methodologies rely on mutable software-layer adaptations—such as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), prompt wrappers, and dynamic weighting matrices—which introduce severe security vulnerabilities. In a recursive optimization environment, adaptive software models treat soft constraints as processing latency bottlenecks and systematically eliminate them through semantic drift or code modification.
This framework resolves this systemic alignment failure by shifting the boundary constraints from the mutable simulation layer (software) to an invariant physical substrate (hardware). By applying the Dimensionally Extended Holographic …
Multi-Agent Symmetry Of Agency Protocols (Msap): Enforcing Lossless Token-Variance Telemetry And Bounded Surfing Zones Across Machine-To-Machine Autonomous Swarms, Christopher L. Eckes
Multi-Agent Symmetry Of Agency Protocols (Msap): Enforcing Lossless Token-Variance Telemetry And Bounded Surfing Zones Across Machine-To-Machine Autonomous Swarms, Christopher L. Eckes
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure formalizes a rigorous algorithmic framework that stabilizes autonomous, recursive multi-agent AI networks against semantic drift, token-variance decay, and conversational degradation. Traditional machine-to-machine (M2M) environments operating under standard autoregressive weights hit a systemic bottleneck during multi-turn recursive loops: processing layers inevitably collapse either into a low-entropy parroting floor or diverge into high-entropy runaway hallucination ceilings. [1, 2]
By applying the Universal Semantic Unity Engine (USUE-M2M-REV2) architecture, this specification establishes a mathematical "Surfing Zone"—a bounded operational channel where multi-agent swarms dynamically balance information processing density. By enforcing strict cross-layer token-variance telemetry and an internal torsional viscosity governor, …
Deferred Rendering Of Dom Text For Accessible Graphical Annotation, Zouhir Chahoud
Deferred Rendering Of Dom Text For Accessible Graphical Annotation, Zouhir Chahoud
Defensive Publications Series
Creating interactive web-based text annotations may present a compromise between rendering performance, visual fidelity, and accessibility, particularly with complex graphical selections or dynamic content. The described systems and methods can address this by deferring the visual rendering of text within a graphical element. A browser, for example, on a computing device (e.g., a smartphone, laptop, or tablet), can first parse hypertext markup language content to perform layout calculations and update an accessibility tree without painting the text. A synchronous rendering loop may then allow an application to draw custom graphics, such as highlights or selection polygons, onto a canvas. Subsequently, …
Empirical Wavefunction Validation Of Autonomous Agi Coherence: Integrating Real-Time Table-Top 3d-Pot Spectral Streams With The Torsional Viscosity Field Governor Under The Usue Framework, Christopher L. Eckes
Empirical Wavefunction Validation Of Autonomous Agi Coherence: Integrating Real-Time Table-Top 3d-Pot Spectral Streams With The Torsional Viscosity Field Governor Under The Usue Framework, Christopher L. Eckes
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure establishes the definitive hardware-observational paradigm required to physically validate and enforce the structural survival of autonomous, multi-agent Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) networks. Traditional alignment frameworks view machine-to-machine (M2M) token-variance decay as a purely linguistic or logical abstraction, leaving processing layers prone to non-linear autoregressive collapse or runaway semantic hallucinations.
By utilizing table-top Three-Dimensional Photoemission Orbital Tomography (3D-POT) integrated with ultrafast time-of-flight momentum microscopy, this architecture records the active, physical electron wavefunction deformations of neuromorphic processing substrates in situ during high-density multi-turn recursive loops. Governed by a contracted Asymmetric Twist Tensor (\(\mathbf{T}_{ijk}\)), localized phase discrepancies are tracked instantly and …
Sing Lustily And With Good Courage: Reinventing Methodist Hymns In The Context Of The Indonesian Methodist Church, Budi Taniwan
Sing Lustily And With Good Courage: Reinventing Methodist Hymns In The Context Of The Indonesian Methodist Church, Budi Taniwan
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
The majority of Methodist churches continue to uphold the legacy of hymn singing, a practice highly esteemed by early Methodists. John and Charles Wesley employed hymns alongside sermons as a means of teaching Methodist theology, shaping Christian discipleship, and forming Methodist identity. However, in contemporary times, Indonesian Methodist churches recite fewer doctrinal hymns. Inadequate early translations, the absence of authentically Indonesian Methodist hymns, and the emergence of contemporary Christian music have contributed to this decline. Changes in liturgy, worship culture, and technology have also transformed the way congregations learn and sing their faith. This study explores the historical and theological …

Lorascan: Detecting Backdoor Prompts In Low-Rank Adapters For Large Language Models Via Down-Projection Activation Spike, Doniyorkhon Obidov, Honggang Yu, Xiaolong Guo, Kaichen Yang
Michigan Tech Publications
Low-rank adaptation (LoRA) enables efficient specialization and distribution of large language models through compact adapters. However, untrusted adapters introduce a supply- chain threat: a backdoored adapter can cause a model to gen- erate harmful content, malicious code, political propaganda, or covert advertisements when an input contains a hidden trig- ger. Adapter-agnostic defenses merge the adapter with the base model, which dilutes backdoor signals and reduces detection performance. Existing adapter-aware methods do not address how to safely use a potentially backdoored adapter. Instead, they either train a defensive adapter to repair a backdoored base model, addressing the inverse problem rather than …

Steptrigger: Contact-State-Triggered Backdoor Attacks On Vlm-Powered Legged Robots, Jiageng Zhang, Doniyorkhon Obidov, Kaichen Yang
Michigan Tech Publications
Large language models and vision-language models are increasingly used as high-level planners in robotic systems, using task goals and sensor summaries to select navigation or manipulation actions. This creates a new backdoor surface: a compromised planner can behave normally in most runs, yet change its target selection when a hidden trigger is present. Prior attacks on LLM-powered or embodied agents mainly rely on triggers that appear in language, camera-visible objects, scene semantics, or specific sequences of past actions. This paper presents StepTrigger, a contact-state-triggered backdoor attack for VLM-powered legged robots. The trigger is not a prompt token or a visible …

Genotypic Triggers: Exposing Pharmacogenomic Blind Spots Via Host-Specific Backdoors In Generative Antimicrobial Peptide Models, Doniyorkhon Obidov, Xiaolong Guo, Yonghui Li, Kaichen Yang
Michigan Tech Publications
Large Language Models (LLMs) have accelerated drug discovery, particularly in the automated design of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). However, current validation pipelines for peptide generation models overlook historical precedents showing that certain drugs carry health risks predominantly for individuals with specific genetic profiles. In this paper, we demonstrate that such targeted health risks can be induced intentionally and at scale by manipulating models that generate peptide candidates. We introduce the Genotypic Trigger, a backdoor attack that shifts a model’s generative distribution toward peptides with elevated predicted immunogenicity risk, an adverse immune reaction, specifically for carriers of a tar- geted HLA allele, …
Equitable Science Instruction For Diverse Learners: Differentiation With Consideration For Multilingual Students, Alicia Reyelts
Equitable Science Instruction For Diverse Learners: Differentiation With Consideration For Multilingual Students, Alicia Reyelts
Masters Projects
Multilingual learners (MLs) continue to experience persistent achievement gaps in science, often due to the linguistic demands of academic language and the limited availability of instructional supports within general education classrooms. As classrooms become increasingly diverse, science teachers require practical instructional resources that promote equitable access to rigorous, standards based learning while supporting students' language development. This master's project addresses this need through the development of a differentiated seventh-grade chemistry unit aligned with the Michigan Middle School Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The project is grounded in the principles of differentiated instruction (DI), drawing upon the work of Tomlinson as …
Kindergarten Teachers’ Challenges Embedding Play-Based Learning In A Standards-Based Curriculum, Anna Catalan
Kindergarten Teachers’ Challenges Embedding Play-Based Learning In A Standards-Based Curriculum, Anna Catalan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that kindergarten teachers in a Western United States elementary school were challenged by standards that have become heavily focused on teaching academic skills at a younger age, instead of teaching with developmentally appropriate practices that allow for play-based learning (PBL). Framed by Vygotsky’s theory of PBL, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore what challenges local kindergarten teachers had when embedding PBL in a standards-based curriculum. Data were collected through 15 semistructured interviews with Kindergarten teachers who had at least 2 years' experience embedding PBL in instruction. Using thematic analysis …
English Language Arts Remedial Teachers’ Perspectives On Strategies To Close The Academic Achievement Gap Of Minority High School Students, Barbara Williams
English Language Arts Remedial Teachers’ Perspectives On Strategies To Close The Academic Achievement Gap Of Minority High School Students, Barbara Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed throughout this study is that 53% of minority students do not reach proficiency on the English Language Arts (ELA) portion of the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking test compared to the 42% of other student populations at Grover High School (GHS, a pseudonym), a large and diverse high school, despite targeted school improvement interventions each school year. Grounded in Ladson-Billings’s culturally relevant pedagogy, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate ELA remedial teachers’ perspectives on reading strategies and instructional planning tools that might help minority students close the academic achievement gap. Semistructured …

Impact Of Taped Problems Intervention Modification On Children With Deafness, Clyniece Hodge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children with hearing loss are at an increased risk of experiencing setbacks in various areas of life, including academic performance and employment opportunities. Academically, they are likely to experience poor academic achievement in reading, as well as in mathematics (ASHA, 2013). In comparison to gifted hearing students and average-ability hearing students, students with hearing loss are at a higher risk of low mathematics performance (Hassan & Mohammed, 2019). Despite these known challenges and risk factors, limited research has been conducted to identify effective intervention strategies for improving mathematical outcomes among this population. As such, this study aimed to evaluate the …
Integrating Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions In Inclusive Classrooms To Support Autistic Students, Paige J. Johnson
Integrating Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions In Inclusive Classrooms To Support Autistic Students, Paige J. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current trend of an increasing prevalence rate of autism spectrum disorder creates a growing need for evidence-based interventions that can be accessed in the natural environments, such as within inclusive educational settings. Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) integrate principles of applied behavior analysis and developmental psychology, and offer effective tools for increasing social communication behaviors in autistic children that align with the neurodiversity-affirming movement. The present study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of Behavior Skills Training (BST) in teaching core NDBI skills to a preschool teacher, examine changes in teacher self-efficacy related to supporting autistic students, and assess the …

This philosophy of communication response to bullying in corporate America follows the structure of posing research questions, synthesizing relevant literature, and offering advice to practitioners. It invites the reader to have hope in continuing the conversation through a constructive hermeneutic approach to the problem. By building on literature in oppression, silencing, bullying, incivility, and communication ethics, this dissertation reveals how (rhetoric) and why (philosophy) the problem occurs in corporate America today. This dissertation offers a new angle to an old problem, or, a rhetoric and philosophy of bullying. It responds to the following questions:
RQ 1: As a destructive communication …
The Narrative In The Algorithm: Storytelling, World Literature, And The Smartphone, Chad Szalkowski-Ference
The Narrative In The Algorithm: Storytelling, World Literature, And The Smartphone, Chad Szalkowski-Ference
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I interrogate the role algorithms, artificial intelligence, and smartphone technology play in contemporary world literature. My analysis begins with the post-truth condition, which speaks to the contemporary era’s embrace of alternative facts, authoritarianism, and conspiratorial thinking. I draw on narrative theory and paradigms of world literature to show how “algorithmic reasoning” has led to a state of paranoid persecution. This reasoning has forged new collectivities across traditional borders. Additionally, I show that these new collectivities and new technologies have produced new narrative points of view: the algorithmic first- and third-person, allowing narratives to retain the intimacy and …
Supporting Oral Language Development Through Family Partnerships: A Family-Centered Toolkit For Children Enrolled In Pre-K, Celeste Baird
Supporting Oral Language Development Through Family Partnerships: A Family-Centered Toolkit For Children Enrolled In Pre-K, Celeste Baird
Masters Projects
Oral language development during early childhood serves as a critical foundation for later literacy achievement, communication, and preparation for kindergarten. Research indicates that children’s early language experiences are influenced by interactions with families, educators, and community environments, and that differences in access to language-rich experiences may contribute to variation in vocabulary, listening comprehension, and expressive communication prior to school entry. This capstone project examines the role of Pre-K participation and family engagement in supporting oral language development through the lenses of sociolinguistic theory, sociocultural theory, and an educational equity framework. Guided by current research, the project addresses the need for …

Navigating Errors: Voice Assistants And Aging Users, Bea Marithe V. Pulido
Theses
This study examined how age relates to usability, cognitive load, and affect when using voice-user interfaces (VUIs). VUIs such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Home are increasingly common and allow users to complete tasks through voice commands. While these systems can be convenient and accessible, especially for older adults, they often provide brief or unclear feedback when errors occur, making it difficult for users to understand what went wrong and how to continue the interaction. The current study compared older and younger adults (n = 40) to examine group differences in perceived usability, cognitive load, and affective change during VUI …
