Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding Nov 2012

Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding

Education and Culture

Positively stated, a reconceptualization of curriculum will most certainly have to take its cue from the American philosopher and pedagogue John Dewey (1859-1952). His work in philosophy and education is one great attempt to overcome dysfunctional dualisms like between the child and the curriculum, freedom and discipline, the individual and the society, body and mind. I will use my reconstruction of his theory of experience and learning to challenge the claim made by the Tanners (Tanner and Tanner, 1980, 1988; D. Tanner, 1982; L.N. Tanner, 1982) that Dewey must be regarded as the ancestor of 'modern' curriculum theory as formulated …

Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu Nov 2012

Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu

Education and Culture

To cut off Vygotsky from Marx is to look at him fragmentally and to separate his work from its theoretical basis. The very act is anti-dialectical materialism, the fundamental principle guiding Vygotsky's research and shaping his analysis. A discussion of Vygotsky in the context of Marxism will help us reach an understanding of the theoretic framework of Vygotsky's thinking. This understanding will lead us to a more profound interpretation of Vygotsky's theory and approach. Hopefully this discussion will also help readers understand Marxist theory and methodology in some way. In this article, based on two of Vygotsky's most known works …

Does "The Knowing" Alter "The Known"? On The Troublesome Relation Of Facts And Ideas In A Deweyan Epistemology, Chris Mccarthy Nov 2012

Does "The Knowing" Alter "The Known"? On The Troublesome Relation Of Facts And Ideas In A Deweyan Epistemology, Chris Mccarthy

Education and Culture

The claim I've made is that there is an often overlooked ontological realism that is properly associated with the Deweyan pragmatic inquiry, the implication of which is that "what" might be discovered in inquiry, what might be known, is in an important sense set in advance, and is independent of the beliefs, hopes and preferences of the inquirer(s). The "production of knowledge," in virtue of this external limiting determination, is indeed the production of that which is stable, secure, general, and, in one very important sense, "transcendent" of the concrete particulars of its originating conditions.

This is a rather controversial …

Autobiography As A Politics Of Metissage: A Pedagogy Of Encounter, Mark Zuss Nov 2012

Autobiography As A Politics Of Metissage: A Pedagogy Of Encounter, Mark Zuss

Education and Culture

My intent here is to indicate the potential life writing strategies represent in assaying specific constellations of contemporary subjectivity. Indications of how experiences are gathered and named through specific socialization in particular discourse communities emerge in productive abundance within life writing practices. The particularities of place, gender, ethnic, racial and national affinities are woven into expressive texts that often afford a sense of the contingency and complexity of what otherwise could be essentialized and reduced to demographic and socioeconomic ascriptions of identity.

Migrant Hispanic Families Of Young Children: An Analysis Of Parent Needs And Family Support, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Vivian I. Correa, Cheryl L. Beverly Nov 2012

Migrant Hispanic Families Of Young Children: An Analysis Of Parent Needs And Family Support, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Vivian I. Correa, Cheryl L. Beverly

Education and Culture

The population served by early interventionists has changed to include more migrant families. Although there has been much research concerning Caucasian families, less is known about culturally and linguistically diverse families. Forming partnerships with families can be aided by understanding how to identify families' needs and support networks. The purpose of this study was to assess the group differences between Hispanic migrant families of young children with and without disabilities (ages birth - 5) regarding their perceptions of needs and use of support systems. The findings indicate that there is little difference between migrant families of young children with and …

Reflection-In-Action And Reflection-On-Action, Hugh Munby

Education and Culture

Since the publication of Schon's (1983) book on the character and development of professional knowledge, our research has been directed at applying his theoretical position to the problem of how teachers acquire the knowledge of practice that allows them to teach as they do. Briefly, we have attempted to understand what lies behind the apparently simple notion that teachers learn to teach by teaching, by examining how teachers interact with their experiences in order to learn from them. This paper does not dwell on the results of our qualitative case studies of 13 participating teachers; these are reported elsewhere (Russell, …

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander Oct 2012

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander

The Journal of Problem Solving

This paper provides a critical examination of the current state and future possibility of formal cognitive theory for insight problem solving and its associated “aha!” experience. Insight problems are contrasted with move problems, which have been formally defined and studied extensively by cognitive psychologists since the pioneering work of Alan Newell and Herbert Simon. To facilitate our discussion, a number of classical brainteasers are presented along with their solutions and some conclusions derived from observing the behavior of many students trying to solve them. Some of these problems are interesting in their own right, and many of them have not …

Intelligent Shelter Allotment For Emergency Evacuation Planning: A Case Study Of Makkah, Kwangsoo Yang, Faizan Ur Rehman, Hatim Lahza, Saleh Basalamah, Shashi Shekhar, Arif Ghafoor Oct 2012

Intelligent Shelter Allotment For Emergency Evacuation Planning: A Case Study Of Makkah, Kwangsoo Yang, Faizan Ur Rehman, Hatim Lahza, Saleh Basalamah, Shashi Shekhar, Arif Ghafoor

Cyber Center Technical Reports

Given maps of an evacuee population, shelter destinations and a transportation
network, the goal of intelligent shelter allotment (ISA) is to assign routes, exits and shelters to evacuees for quick and safe evacuation. ISA is societally important due to emergency planning and response applications in context of hazards such as floods, terrorism, fire, etc. ISA is challenging due to conflicts between movements of evacuee-groups heading to different shelters and transportation-network choke-points. State of the practice based on Nearest Exit or Shelter (NES) paradigm addresses the former challenge but not the latter one leading to load-imbalance and slow evacuation. Recent computational …

Beyond Beliefs: Teachers Adapting Problem-Based Learning To Preexisting Systems Of Practice, John L. Pecore Sep 2012

Beyond Beliefs: Teachers Adapting Problem-Based Learning To Preexisting Systems Of Practice, John L. Pecore

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a constructivist method of instruction aligned with the science educational reform movement to increase scientific literacy for all Americans. As such, PBL instruction is an increasingly popular topic for professional development workshops offered to teachers in secondary learning environments. This research presents a case study of four teachers’ alignment of classroom practice with constructivist principles after participating in a one-week PBL workshop. Teachers assimilated PBL instruction into their current system of teaching; therefore, despite congruent beliefs, those teachers without a constructivist system of practice taught the PBL method with less alignment to constructivist principles. This discrepancy …

Mixing Oil And Water: Recipes For Press-Library Collaboration, Patrick Alexander, James Mccoy, Leila Salisbury, Richard Brown Sep 2012

Mixing Oil And Water: Recipes For Press-Library Collaboration, Patrick Alexander, James Mccoy, Leila Salisbury, Richard Brown

Charleston Library Conference

Recipes for success in press library collaborations can involve dangerous and foreign cultures, environments, and materials that often don't mix together easily or regularly. This session will look at those incompatibilities and examine how a few presses have tried to mix the oil and water of publisher and library. From the perspective of three university press directors, the panel will identify the ingredients in a successful partnership that may not be as obvious to onlookers as we think they are, and whose "mixing" requires more than simply the idea of collaboration.

Contextualizing And Interpreting Cost Per Use For Electronic Journals, Matthew Harrington, Connie Stovall Sep 2012

Contextualizing And Interpreting Cost Per Use For Electronic Journals, Matthew Harrington, Connie Stovall

Charleston Library Conference

Cost and usage have been consistent elements among both serials decision databases and commercial decision support systems, and the cost per use calculation has become a well‐established criterion for assessing electronic subscriptions. However, it is just a numerical value until it can be plotted along several axes related to its components. Mapping these calculated values within and across platforms and subjects allows them to be read through multiple contexts to define what is relatively “high” or “low,” and establishing the relative averages and benchmarks within these multiple contexts informs the difficult serials decisions often faced. This presentation looks at ways …

Artl@S: A Spatial And Trans-National Art History Origins And Positions Of A Research Program, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Sep 2012

Artl@S: A Spatial And Trans-National Art History Origins And Positions Of A Research Program, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

ARTL@S is a project on the spatial and trans-national history of the arts and humanities, based on the collaboration of quantitative methods and cartographic visualization. These two strategies fit into a perspective nourished by critical and sociological theory that, in short, aims to highlight not only the link between a work of art and its space, but also its underlying political, social, aesthetic or economic issues. From this standpoint, we have chosen to take advantage of what a digi-tal approach can offer: the constitution of da-tabases, quantitative analysis, graphic and geographic representations of data, as well as the Internet. In …

Indot Construction Inspection Priorities, Ali Mostafavi, Dulcy M. Abraham Sep 2012

Indot Construction Inspection Priorities, Ali Mostafavi, Dulcy M. Abraham

JTRP Technical Reports

In the last decade, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has experienced an increase in their construction projects (e.g., INDOT’s construction spending was $789 million in 2006 and increased to $1,081.4 million in 2010); while the level of its in-house inspection staff and resources has either remained the same or declined. There are different strategies to deal with the need for construction inspection resources and they may include strategies such as outsourcing the inspection of construction activities and using quality control and quality assurance certification programs to reduce the need for in-process inspection. One strategy that could reduce the inspection …

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2012

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Landscape, Culture, and Education in Defoe's Robinson Crusoe" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert discuss Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe as a narrative that translates nature and our dealings with it into a literary text. Vandeermeersche and Soetaert postulate that the novel can be read as a quintessential fable of humans' cultivation of nature and the creation of individuality, which, at the same time, provides its readers with strategies for describing processes such as education. Robinson Crusoe and its characters, metaphors, and scenarios function in the "auto-communication" of culture as an enduring equipment for living (Burke), a company …

The World Of The Landscape, Bart Verschaffel Sep 2012

The World Of The Landscape, Bart Verschaffel

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The World of the Landscape" Bart Verschaffel analyzes the visual logic of the landscape genre in painting as it was developed from the sixteenth century onward. He argues that the structure of a minimal foreground, a middle ground cut off from the foreground, and a background that gives way to the distant, corresponds to a meditative attitude, proper to the nature of the image as such. The landscape is essentially a calm image. Second, Verschaffel puts forward that the middle ground in landscape images is not, as in history painting, a waiting room adjacent to the action …

Ostracism Is Lost In Translation: When Being Ignored And Excluded Does Not Matter, Han Kang Jul 2012

Ostracism Is Lost In Translation: When Being Ignored And Excluded Does Not Matter, Han Kang

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

How do you feel when people around you start conversing in a language you do not understand? In addition to feeling ostracized, you may also wonder if they are talking about you. Participants were either talked to or not talked to in three different language conditions: English, English-Chinese, and Chinese. Participants experienced more distress when being ostracized than included by English, but they found inclusion more distressing than ostracism by English-Chinese. Additionally, more paranoid attributions were made by participants who were included, rather than ostracized by those speaking an unfamiliar language. This study is the first to show that, under …

Sdi Obtained From Numerous Tape Services, Björn V. Tell

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The information service performed by the Royal Institute of Technology handles requests from both university users and from industry. Fourteen databases are currently used for SDI purposes. As the library also has on-line facilities for retrospective searches of six databases in the ESRO/RECON network, it has been found that retro-searches usually initiate SDI-profiles for current awareness information.

In 1967 the Institute initiated its own database "Mechanical Engineering - MECHEN" and began a subscription to the tapes from the Institute for Scientific Information. The purpose was primarily to provide a service to Swedish manufacturers in the mechanical engineering field. However, the …
