Reading Wordsworth With Hegel And Deleuze, Douglas Berman
Reading Wordsworth With Hegel And Deleuze, Douglas Berman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Reading Wordsworth with Hegel and Deleuze" Douglas Berman reexamines Wordsworth poem, The Ruined Cottage, in terms of the importance of the Pedlar, who serves as the witness and singular moral authority in the text. Berman focuses on the inherent tension between impermanence, as exemplified by the trope of wandering, and the redemptive vision which shapes the ending of the second version of the poem (1798). While recognizing the strength of earlier critics, particularly the New Historicists, who emphasized Wordsworth's displacement of social and material reality into nature, Berman argues that wandering, both in its physical form, and …

Forgács's Film And Installation Dunai Exodus (Danube Exodus), Zsófia Bán
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Forgács's Film and Installation Dunai exodus (Danube Exodus)" Zsófia Bán analyzes film maker and video artist Péter Forgács's film The Danube Exodus (1998) and compares it with the installation Dunai exodus. A folyó beszédes áramlatai (Rippling: Currents of the River) (2002). Combined with additional materials, the two works are based on footage by ship captain Nándor Andrásovits documenting two successive journeys of forced displacement aboard his vessel, the Queen Elizabeth. Bán's analysis includes the 1939 event of the Jewish exodus from Slovakia to the Black Sea with the eventual goal of reaching Palestine followed by …

Evans's The Turducken And Chekhov's The Seagull, Brian R. Johnson
Evans's The Turducken And Chekhov's The Seagull, Brian R. Johnson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Evans's The Turducken and Chekhov's The Seagull" Brian R. Johnson approaches The Turducken as a travesty of The Seagull, examining six iconic scenes from The Seagull, in order to explore the satirical effect of the altered scenes. In December of 2008, Bedlam Theatre of Minneapolis presented The Turducken, "a holiday dinner theater spectacular inspired by Anton Chekhov's The Seagull." Playwright Josef Evans takes Chekhov's 1895 work and turns the classic piece into a musical and farcical satire. The plot of The Turducken follows the plot of The Seagull, and some scenes …

Evoking A Memory Of The Future In Foer's Everything Is Illuminated, Doro Wiese
Evoking A Memory Of The Future In Foer's Everything Is Illuminated, Doro Wiese
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Evoking a Memory of the Future in Foer's Everything is Illuminated" Doro Wiese discusses Jonathan Safran Foer's novel. In the text a photograph plays a decisive role: the image of two young people drives the Jewish American Jonathan to visit the Ukraine. The photograph is presumably of Jonathan's grandfather Safran and a woman named Augustine who saved Safran's life during a nazi raid of his village: the photograph becomes an ekphrasis, a description of a visual work of art in another medium which transforms the generic characteristics of written and photographic representations. According to Anselm …

Metaphor Translation As A Tool Of Intercultural Understanding, Ipshita Chanda
Metaphor Translation As A Tool Of Intercultural Understanding, Ipshita Chanda
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Metaphor Translation as a Tool of Intercultural Understanding" Ipshita Chanda takes up specific cases of metaphor translation as a methodological exercise towards understanding intercultural exchange. Chanda's study is based on a semiotic and linguistic understanding of metaphor as a signifying and cognitive device. When a metaphor is translated from one linguistic-literary field into another, the process of translation itself yields some specific operational steps for studying inter- and cross-cultural relations. Here, translation is not proposed as a framework but as practical method: the translation of metaphor becomes an exercise in strategy for the pedagogy of …
Aesthetics In Gao's Soul Mountain, Mabel Lee
Aesthetics In Gao's Soul Mountain, Mabel Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Aesthetics in Gao's Soul Mountain" Mabel Lee analyses Nobel Laureate 2000 Xingjian Gao's aesthetics. Transnational conglomerates today control the book industry from publishing house to bookshop and through aggressive market strategies they exert considerable influence on readers. Nonetheless, there are writers who refuse to capitulate to market demands and seek only to actualize their aesthetic ideas in the creation of literary texts. One such writer is Gao, author of the novel Soul Mountain. Lee posits that Gao's aesthetics is founded on the close interrogation of both Chinese and European models and practices and explores specific …
Nostalgia In Oral Histories Of Israeli Women, Yael Zilberman
Nostalgia In Oral Histories Of Israeli Women, Yael Zilberman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Nostalgia in Oral Histories of Israeli Women" Yael Zilberman explores the narration of nostalgia of elderly women about the city of Be'er Sheva. In their narration, the subjects of the study create textual and spatial practices which are engendered and create analogies between the city, their maturing/ed bodies, and by-gone youth. Further, the grief owing to the perceived condition of the city intensifies the idealized description of the city and the longing for its past. Zilberman's study brakes new ground in that the study of urban experience within folklore is a lesser explored field as the urban …

The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson
The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Although Okinawa is now under the political administration of Japan, its history has been shaped under the influence of Chinese, Japanese and, most recently, American military domination. Moreover, both Okinawans and the Japanese of the mainland, recognize that Okinawa is differentiated from the rest of Japan by its individual history and distinct cultural practices. One of the most recognizable products of Okinawan culture is karate, at base a martial art but also a cultural practice inscribed with relationships and ideas inherited from wider Okinawan society. At the beginning of the 20th-century this practice was brought to mainland Japan. This paper …
The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
People have long argued about the origins of agriculture in the northern U.S. Southwest. While the roles that maize and other plant foods played in early agricultural (Basketmaker II) communities have been frequently investigated, the utilization of faunal resources during this time has not been as thoroughly studied. This issue will be addressed by presenting the results of zooarchaeological analysis conducted on a sample of faunal remains from the Darkmold site, a Basketmaker II site near Durango, Colorado. Using the Artiodactyl Index, these resuls will be compared to sixteen other Basketmaker II sites and will show that the Durango Basketmakers …
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Did the emergence of social complexity in the Gulf of Georgia, Northwest Coast affect the social learning contexts of technologies? Barbed bone and antler technologies were examined from a Darwinian perspective using Boyd and Richerson's (1985) dual inheritance approach in order to further understand their social learning context. Barbed point attributes were examined for prestige-based indirect (context) bias (Henrich and Henrich 2007), the adoption of cultural traits due to unrelated traits, such as status. The emergence of this form of transmission was expected to emerge with the Developed Northwest Coast pattern (Matson and Coupland 1995). Phylogenetic methods and cluster analyses …

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008 And Beyond, Part 2.1: The Literature Of Perspective, Critique, And Methodology, First Half, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This series of articles covers scholarly works in English which can, at least potentially, be associated with a positive view of biblical historicity regarding the periods preceding the Israelites’ return from exile. Part 2 covers works that treat the concepts and methodological issues at the center of the maximalist-minimalist debate. (Parts 3–5 will cover works on evidences.)
This article, the first half of Part 2, focuses on works that provide a framework in which there exists the realistic possibility for large amounts of Hebrew Scripture to stand as valid historical source material— while still subject to comparison with other sources. …
The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger
The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger
Education and Culture
This paper is an attempt to not only gain a better understanding of the "leftist" ideology in educational research by examining one its most prolific authors, but also to take a hard look at how leftist education literature has "allowed" power-ful conservative (or "rightist") coalitions to set the educational agenda in the United States for the next unforeseeable years.
Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell
Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell
Education and Culture
In this paper, I will examine some of the modern debates between pragmatism and so-called "realism," especially those between Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam. My claim is that many of these debates are based on misunderstandings of the pragmatist tradition. If we rely on Dewey's original ideas, rather than Rorty's reinterpretations of Dewey, these problems can be radically transformed, and in many cases dissolved.
Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken
Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken
Education and Culture
The general theme of change in philosophy over time is due to traditional customs and beliefs failing to regulate society. This theme drove both John Dewey's Progressive Movement and the creation of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The remarkable similarity in thought between Dewey's writings and the Standards is the basis for this paper. The point of view is from the Standards looking back to find Dewey's similar ideas. Although Dewey's views of mathematics per se are not extensively explicated, his overarching views on learning content resonate …
A Federally Supported Educational Reform Program: Individually Guided Education, 1964-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim
A Federally Supported Educational Reform Program: Individually Guided Education, 1964-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim
Education and Culture
For over a century and a half, Americans have sought to reform the public schools as a way of improving not just education but society. They have translated their cultural anxieties and hopes into dramatic demands for educational reform. Individually Guided Education (IGE) was one of these educational reform efforts which extended over a period of fifteen years, beginning in 1964. IGE was conceptualized as a comprehensive alternative system of schooling designed to produce higher educational achievements by providing effectively for differences among students in rate of learning, learning style, and other characteristics (Klausmeier, 1972, p. 48). IGE, combining progressive …
Creative Democracy And Teacher Education: The Task Before Us, Mark Lacelle-Peterson, Phillip J. Vanfossen
Creative Democracy And Teacher Education: The Task Before Us, Mark Lacelle-Peterson, Phillip J. Vanfossen
Education and Culture
This essay is organized around three issues. First, through a comparison of the current social situation with that of the 1930's and early 1940's, we show why we believe that, current apparent economic prosperity notwithstanding, the 'creative imperative' of democracy must be re-asserted to counter clear and evident threats to democracy. Second, drawing on 'Creative Democracy,' we outline a vision of democratic individualism that focuses on personal beliefs and characteristics that are, we argue, 'teachable' in the sense that teachers and teacher educators can—and should—view them as requisite outcomes of their educational endeavors. Finally, we draw out implications for teacher …
"I Used To Be Very Smart:" Children Talk About Immigration, Carol Korn
"I Used To Be Very Smart:" Children Talk About Immigration, Carol Korn
Education and Culture
In the paper which follows, children's narrative as a genre which offers a closer look at childhood experience is explored. The children's own stories of their immigration experiences are examined for the meanings which these transitions hold for them, and for the implications for educational practice they suggest. Landscapes of home and stories about school figure prominently in the children's narratives, and are juxtaposed against current life experiences. This paper will explore the role of the imagination in enabling children to make connections between their lives before and after immigration and suggest implications for educational practice.
