Windowing The Past: A Seventeenth Century Technological Archive And Its Electronic Exploitation, Alasdair Paterson Jul 2012

Windowing The Past: A Seventeenth Century Technological Archive And Its Electronic Exploitation, Alasdair Paterson

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The management of manuscript collections - unique, irreplaceable, fragile - has historically struggled to reconcile preservation with access. Academic librarians know only too well the uneasy negotiation between the conflicting imperatives of security and availability, conservation and use, which comes to define a level of public service in this area.

It is therefore not surprising that here, as elsewhere, the potential of new electronic media is increasingly a matter for investigation. Manuscripts transcribed, keyboarded or scanned into microcomputer systems become "virtual" manuscripts, no longer unique or fragile, potentially unlimited as to time, place, frequency and volume of use, retrievable through …

The Global Village Come True: High-Tech Information Network In High Energy Physics, Ann-Sofi Israelsson, Mogens Sandfær, Stephan Schwarz

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In times of fast development, actors in the center of events have a distinctive advantage. Effective participation requires current knowledge of what is going on ("the right information in the right form at the right time"), reliable channels of feedback, and visibility. The idea of a "global village", when introduced in the sociology of communication some decades back, expresses the confidence in modern communications and computing technology to overcome the obstacle of distance and time delays. This, as we all know, is an oversimplification: the complexities of human communication cannot be reduced to signals and processes in cables and computers. …

The Library As Hub Of The Network Universe, Patrick Kelly Jul 2012

The Library As Hub Of The Network Universe, Patrick Kelly

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In submitting a proposed paper for this conference I made four definitive statements:

  1. The library is positioned at the hub or cross-over point of three network levels: the library network, the University LAN and WANs/VANs.
  2. There is a perfect marriage between the library and networks: the satisfaction of mutual need. Academic networks need the services the libraries can deliver as much as the library needs network services.
  3. The metamorphoses of the traditional 'computer services' function to the management of networks and networks services will justify the amalgamation of academic library and computer services as the network becomes the source of …

Library Automation In Europe, Marc Walckiers Jul 2012

Library Automation In Europe, Marc Walckiers

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Library automation is probably the main challenge that libraries in Europe have to face now. Despite various achievements at regional and national levels, the European library scene is still partitioned and hampered by national borders as well as regional and local particularisms.

This swift overview on library automation in Europe is based on recent studies on libraries in Europe and on the papers presented last year in Brussels at the European Conference on Library Automation and Networking.

Five years ago, the Commission of the European Communities decided to tackle the problem of library automation in the 12 EC countries. Among …

First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich Jun 2012

First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich

PPRI Digital Library

The United States government has adopted new approaches to counter violent extremist organizations around the world. “Soft security” and development programs include focused educational training for groups vulnerable to terrorist recruitment, norm messaging through local radio programming, and job creation in rural communities. This article evaluates the effectiveness of one set of these multi-vectored, community-level programs through analysis of data from 200 respondents in two similar, neighboring cities in northern Mali, Africa. The data show that residents in Timbuktu who were exposed to the programming for up to five years displayed measurably altered civic behavior and listening patterns in comparison …

The research project is centered on determining the evolving meaning of the term “polytechnic”. As a standard class assignment, freshman students will be required to execute video interviews of upper classmen to find out what they think “polytechnic” means. This assignment will be repeated with each group of incoming freshmen so that all students will have the opportunity to interview and be interviewed. By interviewing the students each year, the researchers will be able to understand the changing definition of the term “polytechnic” as the students progress through school. By comparing responses from differing freshmen classes, the researchers will be …

E-Textbooks Usage By Students At Andrews University: A Study Of Attitudes, Perceptions, And Behaviors, Silas Marques Jun 2012

E-Textbooks Usage By Students At Andrews University: A Study Of Attitudes, Perceptions, And Behaviors, Silas Marques

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Although e-books have been incorporated into the academic library’s collection for over a decade now, it has not been, until today, without question. It is still, as the literature reveals, a controversial topic for librarians, publishers, and users around the globe. Although many researches indicate that patrons still prefer the printed format over the electronic version, the tipping point seems to be reaching us earlier then many might think. The growing availability of e-books to users has begun to affect user perceptions and attitudes, creating more access and usage opportunities, a recent research concluded. This paper presents the results of …

The Ch’ien Mu Library of New Asia College houses an extensive collection of fine arts to support the academic curriculum of the Department of Fine Arts located in the same campus of the College. In terms of the library collections, facilities and services, …

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li Jun 2012

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As discovery systems take the Library world by storm, there is a new opportunity for user-centred information literacy programs to emerge. As library search gets easier and varied platforms become unified, the focus of information literacy on search rules and platform choice and navigation will (finally) be able to truly give way to critical thinking and imaginative exploration. These are skills and aptitudes that are needed well beyond the academic environment – making them much more meaningful and useful for many of our users.

This paper will explore how the adoption of discovery systems might impact various user groups in …

Shaping The Way Of Instruction: Fusion Of Games, Lecture And Theatrical Techniques Vs. Traditional Lecture Type Of Library Instruction: Examining Its Effectiveness In Undergraduate Library Instruction, Harold T. Franco, Bob P. Cauilan Jun 2012

Cauilan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Nowadays, traditional lecture type of library instruction may work only to few audiences. Students exhibit various learning styles and along with this instruction, librarians are also faced with users of new generations. Users who are capable of multitasking, tech-savvy and are more inclined to surfing the net and engaging much on online chat, Internet discussion forums and online games, may find traditional type of instructions ineffective and boring.

In order to give an answer to the effectiveness of the library instruction being conducted in each term at the De La Salle University –Manila, a study has been made to compare …

History And Politics In Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb, Shubh Brat Sarkar Jun 2012

History And Politics In Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb, Shubh Brat Sarkar

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "History and Politics in Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb" Shubh Brat Sarkar analyzes the use of history in a dramatic text, the underlying politics and ideology of a literary product, and the modes by which the materials are shaped through dramaturgy. The name Aurangzeb, the title of the play, has a strong presence in history textbooks and has perhaps become an integral part of a grand historical, "Indian" nationalist discourse. In the play multiple contradictions co-exist and find new projections in translations and theater adaptations in different historical contexts. Indira Parthasarthy's 1974 play is based on events leading …

Women's Worlds In The Novels Of Kandukuri And Gilman, Suneetha Rani Jun 2012

Women's Worlds In The Novels Of Kandukuri And Gilman, Suneetha Rani

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Women's Worlds in the Novels of Kandukuri and Gilman" Suneetha Rani discusses Veeresalingam Kandukuri's Satyaraja Poorvadesayatralu (Satyaraja's Travel to the Distant Lands) and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland. While the novels were published in two different contexts — one in pre-independence India and the other in pre-World War I in the U.S., one in Telugu and the other in English, one by a man and the other by a woman — there is an interesting connecting thread that brings them together. Both were satires on the contemporary male chauvinistic world. While the Telugu novel pleads for a better …

Africa And India In The Novels Of Dai And Emecheta, Debarshi Prasad Nath, Juri Dutta Jun 2012

Africa And India In The Novels Of Dai And Emecheta, Debarshi Prasad Nath, Juri Dutta

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Africa and India in the Novels of Dai and Emecheta" Debarshi Prasad Nath and Juri Dutta discusses the work of two writers belonging to different continents, India and Nigeria. Interestingly, the novels of the two writers Dutta is analyzing — Lummer Dai and Buchi Emecheta —never heard of each other. Both novels are based on the custom of bride price, both writers speak out against the stifling rigidity of traditional customs, and uphold aspects of modernity in languages other than their native tongues. At the same time, both writers affirm the sanctity of the traditional institutions and …

Duality Of Illusion And Reality In Desai's In Custody, Narinder K. Sharma Jun 2012

Duality Of Illusion And Reality In Desai's In Custody, Narinder K. Sharma

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Duality of Illusion and Reality in Desai's In Custody," Narinder K. Sharma analyses Anita Desai's internal confrontation of choices. In the novel, Desai's narration offers various options at every step and the author suggests that it becomes difficult to decide what actually should be done. The attempt is to personalize impersonal time and space thereby brings it into the domain of conflicting choices signifying an existential desire to manifest freedom. Going a step further, it can be deciphered that the individual desires to make an ideal choice to experience "authenticity"; however, the desire of making an …

World Literature And The Case Of Joyce, Rao, And Borges, Bhavya Tiwari Jun 2012

World Literature And The Case Of Joyce, Rao, And Borges, Bhavya Tiwari

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "World Literature and the Case of Joyce, Rao, and Borges" Bhavya Tiwari discusses the work of James Joyce and poses the question why Joyce is considered an important figure in Latin America and South Asia. Have Indian languages (e.g., Bengali and Hindi) responded differently to Joycean aesthetics? If yes, can there be political reasons behind this difference? Joyce's own position in Europe as a modernist aesthetician complicates his reception in the "periphery," India and Latin America. Hence, Tiwari queries as to what happens when Joyce's texts are received on two different continents. In this context, Tiwari discusses …

Shakespeare Reception In India And The Netherlands Until The Early Twentieth Century, Vikram Singh Thakur Jun 2012

Shakespeare Reception In India And The Netherlands Until The Early Twentieth Century, Vikram Singh Thakur

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Shakespeare Reception in India and The Netherlands until the Early Twentieth Century" Vikram Singh Thakur locates Shakespeare in two different cultural contexts by looking at its reception in The Netherlands and India. His analysis is based on the fact that Shakespeare was a foreign playwright to both cultures yet both have gradually assimilated his works into their respective cultures and made him, probably, the most performed foreign playwright since the 1870s. Thakur aims at understanding how the reception of a work in different cultures is mediated by various social, cultural, historical, and ideological sieves through which the …

Firing The Executive: When An Analytic Approach To Problem Solving Helps And Hurts, Daniel A. Aiello, Andrew F. Jarosz, Patrick J. Cushen, Jennifer Wiley

The Journal of Problem Solving

There is a general assumption that a more controlled or more focused attentional state is beneficial for most cognitive tasks. However, there has been a growing realization that creative problem solving tasks, such as the Remote Associates Task (RAT), may benefit from a less controlled solution approach. To test this hypothesis, in a 2x2 design, we manipulated whether solvers were given the RAT before or after an implicit learning task. We also varied whether they were told to “use their gut” as part of either initial task. The results suggest that a less analytic approach engendered by a “use your …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Project–Based Instruction And Student Achievement In High School Social Studies, Emily J. Summers, Gail Dickinson Mar 2012

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Project–Based Instruction And Student Achievement In High School Social Studies, Emily J. Summers, Gail Dickinson

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This longitudinal study focused on how project–based instruction (PBI) influencedsecondary social studies students’ academic achievement and promoted College andCareer Readiness (CCR). We explored and compared student achievement in a PBI highschool versus a traditional instruction high school within the same rural school district. While previous literature indicated that PBI involved more preparation time and a steeperlearning curve for both teachers and students, we found that in high school social studies, students’ achievement gains actualized within one year. PBI students outperformedpeers who learned from a traditional curriculum in both social studies achievement andCCR preparedness.

Homosexual Identity, Translation, And Prime-Stevenson's Imre And The Intersexes, Margaret S. Breen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Homosexual Identity, Translation, and Prime-Stevenson's Imre and The Intersexes" Margaret S. Breen examines the role of translation in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies. Breen's focus is Edward Prime-Stevenson, who, under the penname Xavier Mayne, wrote two works: a short novel, Imre: A Memorandum (1906), and a general history of homosexuality, The Intersexes: A History of Similisexualism as a Problem of Social Life (1908). Breen argues that Prime-Stevenson's texts are relevant to late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century discussions of (homo)sexuality because they point to the importance of translation in writings concerning sexual and gender identities and …
