Exploring And Implementing A Compassionate Social Service Ministry In Korean American Churches, Caleb Kim Apr 2025

Exploring And Implementing A Compassionate Social Service Ministry In Korean American Churches, Caleb Kim

KAUPA Letters

The purpose of this study is to explore the types and contents of church ministries provided by Korean American churches in the Chicagoland area. Using a conceptual content analysis, this study identified that most Korean American churches disproportionately offer an evangelical ministry to their fellow church members but overlook a compassionate social service ministry to their congregations, other ethnic minorities, the oppressed and unjust social issues. The most offered evangelical ministries are weekly worship services, evangelism, world mission, discipleship training, and Bible study. Only few churches provide financial aid support and pastoral care services to their church members and non-Korean …

Developing Students' Sociotechnical Thinking In The Humanities-Engineering Classroom: A Treatment Versus Control Study Using A Scenario-Based Assessment, Lori Czerwionka, Siddhant S. Joshi, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Kirsten A. Davis Mar 2025

Davis

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Background

Engineering problems are open-ended and complex, involving technical and social aspects, yet engineering education focuses on technical training and closed-ended problems. To prepare engineering students, curricula should foster sociotechnical thinking—the ability to consider the interplay of technical and social factors during problem solving. Although educational interventions in this area show promise, further insight into the benefits of interdisciplinary interventions is warranted, particularly with treatment and control group designs.

Purpose

We examine the effect of a Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects (HIEP) course on students' sociotechnical thinking development.

Method

We compared the sociotechnical thinking development of engineering students who took the HIEP …

Beyond Cultural Responsiveness: Elevating African American Stem Education Through African-Centered Models, Deanna Bailey, Charnee Bowens, Tamara Altman Mar 2025

Beyond Cultural Responsiveness: Elevating African American Stem Education Through African-Centered Models, Deanna Bailey, Charnee Bowens, Tamara Altman

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Researchers posit that the way science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are taught to African Americans contributes to their underrepresentation in the STEM fields. STEM educators are increasingly utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally responsive teaching strategies, and culturally sustaining pedagogy to engage the African American STEM learner. However, these techniques are limited in addressing the holistic development, healing, and needs of African people.[1] This essay advocates for the use and study of a new educational model titled African-centered STEM education (ACSE). The authors contend that this model is effective for African American STEM learners and African people and benefits …

Maximum Engagement, Minimum Distraction, And Knowledge Transference, Jooyoung Kim, Sharmita Lahiri

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

In the Indian academia, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the focus on teaching “writing” is relatively new; traditional focus has been on teaching the English language or Communication Skills. The novelty of academic writing has called for rigorous efforts in its operation in the Indian context. In addition, the virtual learning environment required by the pandemic posed the serious challenge of adopting the academic writing pedagogy to the new format of the virtual classroom. This article showcases successful strategies adopted for graduate and undergraduate foundation writing courses at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, which ensured maximum engagement and …

Evaluation Of Teacher, Self-Assessment, Versus Combined Feedback To Increase Students’ Behavioral Observation Skills, Jie Zhang, Marcie N. Desrochers, Michael Fensken Mar 2025

Evaluation Of Teacher, Self-Assessment, Versus Combined Feedback To Increase Students’ Behavioral Observation Skills, Jie Zhang, Marcie N. Desrochers, Michael Fensken

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Feedback is an important component of online instruction. Few experiments have examined combined types of feedback (teacher feedback or student self-assessment) compared to extra practice with each on student learning. In this study, the experimental effectiveness of four methods of feedback delivery on students’ acquisition of behavioral observation skills was evaluated—teacher feedback only (TT condition), student self-assessment only (SS condition), teacher-then-student self-assessment (TS condition), or student self-assessment-then-teacher (ST condition). The results, both for a random sample of individual learners as well as at an overall group level, suggest that the SS condition was superior to the TS condition. In the …

Decolonising Information Literacy: Diversity Integration For Empowering Minority Groups, Elize Du Toit Mar 2025

Decolonising Information Literacy: Diversity Integration For Empowering Minority Groups, Elize Du Toit

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

For a long time, library guides (LibGuides) have been essential resources for linking students with information related to faculty, specific subjects, and coursework. However, the scope of LibGuides has expanded significantly in contemporary library practices. They now include a wide variety of resources, such as guides on particular library products, platforms, resources, instructional materials, and 'how-to' guides. These enhanced features demonstrate the changing requirements of library users as they navigate a more complicated academic environment. In 2016, the University of Johannesburg launched an online course on information literacy using the SpringShare LibGuide platform, which was highly successful. Originally created in …

"Whaowhia Te Kete Mātauranga" - Fill The Basket With Knowledge: Open Access In Australia And Aotearoa New Zealand In 2024, Janet Catterall

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Open Access Australasia reported on the state of OA across the ANZ region in 2022, tracing initiatives across 4 broad research sectors. Universities showed the greatest OA practice and were found to be using repositories, preprints and other avenues more than journals as pathways to open research. Data from the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI) showed multiple avenues were used simultaneously in fact, indicating significant bibliodiversity. Here we present updates to the report for the university sector, showing the state of play at the end of 2024. Data suggests that the growth in OA in the last 2 years has …

Integrating Intercultural Competencies In An Introductory Business Information Literacy Course, Annette Bochenek, Heather A. Howard, Zoeanna A. Mayhook

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Librarians at a large Midwestern university integrated intercultural competencies into an information literacy course taught annually to over 100 first-year business students. The interventions aim to improve intercultural skills and characteristics as defined by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric. Student intercultural competencies were assessed via online surveys according to the VALUE Rubric, comparing pre-, retrospective, and post-self-assessments. Students' intercultural competencies changed as a result of engaging with the course material. This paper describes the classroom interventions implemented by librarians, results from survey data analysis, and implications for library instruction.

Learning To Read While Learning A Language: Reading And English Learners, Trish Morita-Mullaney

Science of Reading

The Science of Reading (SOR) is intended to benefit all children as they develop a strong foundation in reading. For a growing number of students who have proficiencies in languages other than English, how they experience SOR classroom activities differs. Students who are learning English as an additional language (English Learners) come from a variety of language backgrounds and enter at different levels of English proficiency, ranging from beginner to advanced. This research brief describes how phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency are different for English Learners and offers advice on how to interpret their performances, differentiating instruction to address their …

From Prison To The World: A Comparative Reading Of Naji’S Hirz Mikamkim (Rotten Evidence, 2020) And Abd El-Fattah’S You Have Not Yet Been Defeated (2021), Teresa Pepe Jan 2025

From Prison To The World: A Comparative Reading Of Naji’S Hirz Mikamkim (Rotten Evidence, 2020) And Abd El-Fattah’S You Have Not Yet Been Defeated (2021), Teresa Pepe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article analyses Ahmed Naji’s Hirz Mikamkim (Rotten Evidence) and Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s You Have Not Yet Been Defeated through the lens of ‘prison literature’, that is “literary works produced in, about, or through the experience of political detention” (Taleghani 13). Comparing them to previous forms of prison literature from Egypt, it shows that both books depart from the social-realistic mode that has prevailed throughout the 20th century. Rather they renovate the genre with aesthetic traits drawn from postmodern and digital literature, exemplified by autofictional or anonymous modes of authorship and co-authorship, narrative fragmentation, and bodily exposures. These aesthetic …

Khairy Shalaby’S Novel The City Of The Enslaved: Egyptian Prison Literature With A Russian Twist, Sarali Gintsburg Jan 2025

Khairy Shalaby’S Novel The City Of The Enslaved: Egyptian Prison Literature With A Russian Twist, Sarali Gintsburg

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Although the interconnectedness of Russian and Arabic literatures has been demonstrated by Soviet/Russian and, to a limited extent, Western Arabists, this research remains limited to a few names. However, the role that the Russian/Soviet literary tradition had in shaping contemporary genres of Arabic literature is complex and diverse. This is, for instance, the case with prison literature—Russian/Soviet literature has a long tradition of turning to the topic of imprisonment. It was Dostoyevsky, who turned to the genre of katorzhnaya proza (prison literature) and popularized it. Later, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Gorky dedicated a number of their influential literary works to further …

The Absurdity Of Liberation In Moroccan Prison Narratives, Hakima Choukri Jan 2025

The Absurdity Of Liberation In Moroccan Prison Narratives, Hakima Choukri

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Moroccan prison narratives have been credited with major political and social changes, yet their existential value is equally worth acknowledging. The prison narratives of Aziz Binebine, Mohamed Raiss, Malika Oufkir, and Fatna El Bouih, to mention but a few, are fraught with existentialist patterns that are uncovered upon reading them comparatively. One pattern that persists through these narratives is the absurdity of liberation. Borrowing Camus’ concept of the absurd, this article highlights the absurdity of the post-prison chapter for being nothing more than an extension of the prison episode that makes the impossibility of freedom acutely felt. The absurdity of …

Was Spinoza A Deleuzian? Rethinking The Politics Of Emotions And Affects, Ahmet Aktas Jan 2025

Was Spinoza A Deleuzian? Rethinking The Politics Of Emotions And Affects, Ahmet Aktas

Department of Philosophy Student Publications

A salient tradition in contemporary affect theory heavily relies on distinguishing between emotions and affects. The former refers to structured categories of socially coded affective states, while the latter denotes the pre-social libidinal flow underlying emotions. This distinction is commonly attributed to Spinoza and is thought to have been further developed by Deleuze. In this article, I argue that this overall historical picture is misleading and inaccurate. Deleuze radically transforms Spinoza’s theory of affect for the ends of his own ethical-political philosophy. Moreover, I argue that Deleuzian and similar conceptualizations of affect fail to fulfill their political and ethical promises …

Linguistic Knowledge For Teachers: Supporting Multilingual Learners In The Science Of Reading Era, Brenda Sarmiento Quezada Jan 2025

Linguistic Knowledge For Teachers: Supporting Multilingual Learners In The Science Of Reading Era, Brenda Sarmiento Quezada

Science of Reading

The Science of Reading (SOR) has gained widespread attention as a framework for strengthening foundational literacy skills, yet its implementation often assumes a monolingual English context. This brief argues that equitable SOR practices require teachers to develop a working knowledge of linguistics to better support multilingual learners. Six core areas of linguistic knowledge: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and dialect variation, are described with attention to their impact on reading development. Each area includes examples of cross-linguistic differences that shape how students acquire English literacy and highlights practice implications for classroom instruction. The brief concludes by emphasizing the need for …

American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah Dec 2024

American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

During the Crimean War (1853–1856), France and Britain sided with the Ottoman Empire to curb Russian expansion. Though an ocean away, the American public was not only aware of this conflict but often held strong opinions on the war and its participants. American media representations of the Crimean War are indicative of this, and a systematic examination reveals some significant trends in reporting, aligning closely to and providing nuance for larger trends in American history.

The most significant trend in newspaper reporting of the Crimean War was a North-South geographical divide. Northern states supported Britain and France throughout the conflict, …

Marvelous Bodies: Italy's New Migrant Cinema, Vetri Nathan Dec 2024

Marvelous Bodies: Italy's New Migrant Cinema, Vetri Nathan

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Historically a source of emigrants to Northern Europe and the New World, Italy has rapidly become a preferred destination for immigrants from the global South. Life in the land of la dolce vita has not seemed so sweet recently, as Italy struggles with the cultural challenges caused by this surge in immigration. Marvelous Bodies by Vetri Nathan explores thirteen key full-length Italian films released between 1990 and 2010 that treat this remarkable moment of cultural role reversal through a plurality of styles. In it, Nathan argues that Italy sees itself as the quintessential internal Other of Western Europe, and that …

The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research

Partisan Rhetoric and Polarization: The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research, Volume 10 features chapters written from a variety of perspectives that address divisions in American politics. The topics range widely, including TikTok, abortion, the middle class, the January 6 riot, and partisan rhetoric in Congress. The unifying theme of the volume is that each author uses C-SPAN videos to examine how members of Congress and other elites speak and act on these issues. Two other thoughtful pieces examine Supreme Court justices speaking off the bench and emotional reactions in presidential debates. Partisan Rhetoric and Polarization provides context to understand how …

New Trends In The Study Of Haredi Culture And Society, David N. Myers, Nechumi Malovicki-Yaffe Dec 2024

New Trends In The Study Of Haredi Culture And Society, David N. Myers, Nechumi Malovicki-Yaffe

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

Who are Haredim? And why are they the source of both increasing attention and continuing misunderstanding? New Trends in the Study of Haredi Culture and Society draws on the innovative research of leading scholars from a variety of disciplines—including history, religious studies, demography, linguistics, and geography—to trace the growing prominence of Haredi (often called ultra-Orthodox) Jews in Jewish life. Haredi Jews are committed to preserving a measure of segregation from the rest of society consistent with the guiding principles of their forebears; yet increasingly, they are appearing more visibly and assertively in public spaces. Demographic analysis suggests that they will …

The Inner Form Of Style: On Heinrich Wölfflin’S “Tactical” Formalism, Rémi Mermet Dec 2024

The Inner Form Of Style: On Heinrich Wölfflin’S “Tactical” Formalism, Rémi Mermet

Artl@s Bulletin

In this article, I examine the enduring relevance of Heinrich Wölfflin’s approach to style, in light of the renewed interest in it among “postformalist” art historians. By delving into the theoretical foundations of the Principles of Art History, I explore Wölfflin’s Goethean interpretation of Kantian epistemology, revealing a conception of style characterized by its dynamic and symbolic “inner form” rather than mere static formalism. This analysis not only highlights affinities with Max Weber’s thought but also uncovers a previously overlooked connection to Wilhelm von Humboldt, offering valuable insights for current discussions on style.

Dans cet article, j’étudie la pertinence …
