Consumer Perceptions Of Egg-Laying Hen Housing Systems, Daniel S. Ochs, Christopher A. Wolf, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir Oct 2018

Consumer Perceptions Of Egg-Laying Hen Housing Systems, Daniel S. Ochs, Christopher A. Wolf, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The egg industry has transitioned, or is in the process of transitioning, from conventional cages to alternative hen housing systems in response to legal changes in many states across the United States (US). However, consumers find it is increasingly difficult to understand the details behind those labels and specific attributes conveyed. There are multiple hen housing options with a wide range of costs and impacts on hens, workers, and the environment. This research furthers the understanding of US public perceptions and attitudes related to hen housing systems and corresponding animal welfare, worker, economic, and environmental effects. Results reveal that the …

This paper is a reflection on a library system migration project from two project managers at two different campuses. The authors discuss challenges encountered, approaches taken, priorities established, and perhaps most importantly, what each would do differently with the benefit of hindsight. For those who are preparing to undertake a system migration, this paper will offer guidance and advice.

Introduction To Electronic Resource Acquisition, Linda Creibaum, Star Holloway Sep 2018

Introduction To Electronic Resource Acquisition, Linda Creibaum, Star Holloway

Charleston Library Conference

Two acquisitions librarians led an informal introduction to the basics of electronic resource acquisition in this session intended for those new to this unique and intricate field. The session explored acquiring e-books, journals, journal backfiles, primary source collections, and databases. Topics of discussion included vendor selection and services, timing for trials and purchases, access options, price negotiation, and licensing concerns. This session also reviewed communications with campus constituents concerning resource changes.

Participants left the session with a better understanding of possible options, considerations, resources, and support structures available to them as acquisition specialists.

Reimagining Print Materials In A Health Science Context: Creating And Marketing A Wellness Collection, Margaret Ansell, Ariel Pomputius Sep 2018

Reimagining Print Materials In A Health Science Context: Creating And Marketing A Wellness Collection, Margaret Ansell, Ariel Pomputius

Charleston Library Conference

In the healthcare field in which out-of-date information can harm patients, the currency and immediacy of digital collections is highly valued. As a result, many health science libraries have deselected much of their print collections (Haapanen, Kultamaa, Ovaska, & Salmi, 2015; Lingle & Robinson, 2009; Tobia & Hunnicutt, 2008; Xiaoli & Kopper, 2005). However, print materials continue to be valued by health science library users for a variety of purposes (Houghton, 2017; Watson, 2016). This paper describes how one academic health science center library found a role for print materials in the context of a wellness initiative, which (1) gave …

Report On Data Review And Communication During Florida Academic Libraries’ Catalog Migration, Christine Dunleavy Sep 2018

Report On Data Review And Communication During Florida Academic Libraries’ Catalog Migration, Christine Dunleavy

Charleston Library Conference

A statewide communication plan is the essential foundation to successfully analyze Florida’s college, university, and joint use libraries’ catalog data integration as the data migrates to a new integrated library system platform. Librarians, library professionals, staff, and authorized community members are preparing the new library catalog and discovery interface, scheduled to go live in July 2018, and are currently testing Florida’s academic libraries’ data in Sierra/Encore Duet’s online catalog. December 2017 marks the 20th month of review, and Florida’s collective library expertise and input is advancing the quality of the transfer of data and discovery configuration. Two library staff in …

Open Access: Getting On The Same Page: What If Ir Managers And Oa Policy Administrators Could Have Everything They Desire From Publishers?, John G. Dove Sep 2018

Open Access: Getting On The Same Page: What If Ir Managers And Oa Policy Administrators Could Have Everything They Desire From Publishers?, John G. Dove

Charleston Library Conference

Directors of scholarly communication and others responsible for institutional policies with regard to repositories and open access have an increasingly complex landscape to manage. University presses, even those with a strong support for open access, often have subscription journals. Are there areas where these subscription journals can follow OA-friendly practices that can help the IR managers and OA policy administrators? If so, maybe these can be practices that other journal publishers can be pressured to provide?

We bring together three panelists from research universities with diverse responsibilities of administering an open access policy, managing an institutional repository, and managing journal …

First Aid For Student Cost: Helping Nursing Faculty Move Away From Textbook Purchase Requirements, Lea A. Leininger Sep 2018

First Aid For Student Cost: Helping Nursing Faculty Move Away From Textbook Purchase Requirements, Lea A. Leininger

Charleston Library Conference

There is growing interest in the use of open educational resources to reduce student cost. Many repositories provide e-resources that can be modified and adopted by instructors, yet there are a number of barriers to adoption. In 2017 several nursing instructors at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro received mini-grants to redesign a course to reduce textbook purchase requirements. This paper describes liaison librarian support for the course redesigns.

The Scholarly Workflow In The Digital Age: What Do We Know? What Should We Do?, Steven Weiland Sep 2018

The Scholarly Workflow In The Digital Age: What Do We Know? What Should We Do?, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

The figure of the scholarly workflow is common in studies of scholarly communications. Accounts and images of the workflow, based on surveys, interviews, ethnography, and scholarly autobiography, have identified the sequence of steps in research. This paper explains what is common to such work, how configurations of information behavior differ in representing the newest technologies, and thus how the workflow is being freshly interpreted and made part of library practices. Altogether, the workflow, as it has been understood and as it is being remade, is a format for understanding how scholarly communications reflect the individual, disciplinary, and institutional conditions of …

How Difficult Can It Be? Creating An Integrated Network Among Library Stakeholders To Promote Electronic Access, Denise M. Branch, Anne-Marie H. Viola, Jamie Gieseck-Ashworth, Benjamin C. Johnson Sep 2018

How Difficult Can It Be? Creating An Integrated Network Among Library Stakeholders To Promote Electronic Access, Denise M. Branch, Anne-Marie H. Viola, Jamie Gieseck-Ashworth, Benjamin C. Johnson

Charleston Library Conference

Tracking electronic access is a major challenge for libraries that cannot be ignored. Vast quantities of electronic resources continue to be acquired, and libraries continue to seek a way to keep up with the evolving electronic resource ecosystem.

Libraries are immersed in monitoring electronic resources for access performance, features, functionality, completeness of content, and usage. Publishers, providers, and vendors are immersed in their innovative business models. Users are immersed in their research needs. With these immersion silos, there is a lack of communication between stakeholders that creates an unsustainable ecosystem.

Currently, stakeholders are creating piecemeal patches that partially address access …

Researchgate Vs. The Institutional Repository: Competition Or Complement?, Julia Lovett, Andrée J. Rathemacher

Charleston Library Conference

The popularity of academic social networks like ResearchGate and Academia.edu indicates that scholars want to share their work, yet for universities with open access (OA) policies, these sites may be competing with institutional repositories for content. Our study seeks to reveal researcher practices, attitudes, and motivations around uploading their work to ResearchGate and complying with an institutional Open Access Policy. We conducted a population study to examine the participation by 558 full‐ ti me University of Rhode Island faculty members in the OA Policy and Research‐ Gate, followed by a survey of 728 full‐ ti me URI faculty members about …

Nothing Is Linear About Open Access Initiatives: Promoting Oa At A New Research Institution, Jennifer King Matthews, Christine Davidian

Charleston Library Conference

Every campus appears to be “in the know” when it comes to open access, yet many of us “in the trenches” at our university libraries know that not to be the case. Often what is closer to reality is that there are many pockets of disparate knowledge on campus that need to be harnessed and reconciled in order to truly develop a program that benefits the whole. This poster will describe Rowan University’s current Open Access (OA) and Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives that conference attendees may use as templates for programs at their institutions.

Rowan University’s recent designation as …

Library Marketing: From Passion To Practice, Jill S. Heinze Sep 2018

Library Marketing: From Passion To Practice, Jill S. Heinze

Charleston Library Conference

As discussed in the Charleston Briefing entitled Library Marketing: From Passion to Practice, successfully marketing libraries requires more than a sound communication strategy. Marketing is, in fact, all of an organization’s activities that deliver a product or service to its intended customers. This distinction means that library organizations need to expand their views about what it means to “market” themselves to encompass all of the touchpoints users have with their services. In the process, librarians are challenged to reconcile marketing practices from the business world with their public service ethos, as well as ensure their missions are well defined and …

Honoring Past Practices While Increasing Collection Budget Flexibility: Designing And Communicating A New Budget Model, Ginger Williams, Scott Pope Sep 2018

Honoring Past Practices While Increasing Collection Budget Flexibility: Designing And Communicating A New Budget Model, Ginger Williams, Scott Pope

Charleston Library Conference

When LBJ was president and the Beatles were all the rage, Southwest Texas State College adopted a library allocation formula. Five decades later, the Texas State University Libraries administration decided it was time to stop adjusting the formula and adopt a completely new collection budget model with more flexibility to meet changing needs. This paper discusses the process used to develop a new model, communication strategies with the campus, and ways the new model impacted serials workflow. It also includes a few sample slides that were particularly effective in presentations to faculty.

The Road To Effective Leadership, Shin Freedman, Jim Freedman Sep 2018

The Road To Effective Leadership, Shin Freedman, Jim Freedman

Charleston Library Conference

Library leadership is one of the much-discussed subjects in library and information science. Yet, many librarians tend to shy away from using the word “leadership” and the authors wondered why. It seemed peculiar that librarians tend not to associate themselves with the context of leaders or leadership. Whether you are a driven librarian or an ambitious young librarian, or you are an ambitious and driven person, library leadership is a rather remote subject for most librarians and information professionals. Why is that the case?

This paper will explore the world of library leaders and leadership by deconstructing the myths of …

Reimagining Research Services As Part Of Major Academic Library Renovations Or Other Changes: A Tale Of Two Research Departments (University Of Central Florida And Florida Gulf Coast University), Barbara G. Tierney, Linda Colding

Charleston Library Conference

Two academic library research service managers discuss changes and innovations that they have coordinated in their respective libraries: University of Central Florida serving 60,000+ students (http:// library .ucf .edu /21st/) and Florida Gulf Coast University serving 15,000+ students (http:// library .fgcu .edu /admin /renewal .html) due to major building renovations or other changes that their respective libraries are conducting.

These changes and innovations include significantly downsizing print reference and other collections, relocating service points, reconfiguring public services, rethinking staffing patterns, adjusting subject librarian face-to-face activities, stepping up online services, communicating with stakeholders, and keeping students and faculty in the loop …

Hosting A Library Vendor Week: A Better Way To Manage Site Visits?, Edward F. Lener, Carola Blackwood

Charleston Library Conference

Scheduling meetings between vendors and the appropriate library staff members is often a challenge, and the number of requests for site visits can quickly overwhelm any library calendar. The University Libraries at Virginia Tech recently held its first library vendor week in an attempt to address such concerns. Nearly two dozen vendors took part in the five-day event. This paper provides key lessons we learned during this experience and shares tips and strategies for libraries that may be interested in hosting their own multivendor event. With one perspective provided by the host library, and another from a vendor who took …

They will briefly share their experiences in leadership, as well as strategies for preparation, challenges they continue to face, and lessons they are still learning. Participants will learn about developing a personal leadership practice, as well as networking, mentoring, and professional development …

What’S Past Is . . . Still Messing With Our Workflows, Jacqueline Whyte Appleby Sep 2018

What’S Past Is . . . Still Messing With Our Workflows, Jacqueline Whyte Appleby

Charleston Library Conference

Scholars Portal has been aggregating locally loaded e-books for Ontario universities on an ebrary-backed platform since 2009—eons ago in the world of library technology! Over the last year, Scholars Portal Books has received a rewrite from the ground up, and this time the focus is on building a platform that anticipates the future of e-book access and usage. No surprise that there have been many challenges along the way, and most of them are unique to consortia: How do we handle corrections to old PDFs? What do we do with six ISBNs? More broadly, how do we support local scholarship …
