Global Access To Science – Meeting The Revolution, Tom Cochrane Jun 2007

Global Access To Science – Meeting The Revolution, Tom Cochrane

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper considers the large changes occurring in the way science is done, and the global significance of such changes. It reviews the mission of librarianship in promoting access to science and then surveys developments in recent years specifically in improving open access to scientific publications, covering a range of issues including significant shifts in the public policy debate about access, as well as some of the arguments about the best means of achieving outcomes. It concludes with a review of fresh challenges in terms of access to scientific data (eResearch, eScience), and gives a view that while libraries cannot …

Numerically Stable Algorithms For Inversion Of Block Tridiagonal And Banded Matrices, Jitesh Jain, Hong Li, Stephen Cauley, Cheng-Kok Koh, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan Jun 2007

Numerically Stable Algorithms For Inversion Of Block Tridiagonal And Banded Matrices, Jitesh Jain, Hong Li, Stephen Cauley, Cheng-Kok Koh, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We provide a new representation for the inverse of block tridiagonal and banded matrices. The new representation is shown to be numerically stable over a variety of block tridiagonal matrices, in addition of being more computationally efficient than the previously proposed techniques. We provide two algorithms for commonly encountered problems that illustrate the usefulness of the results.

Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (Negf) Simulation Of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes Including Vacancy Defects, Neophytos Neophytou, Shaikh Ahmed, Gerhard Klimeck Jun 2007

Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (Negf) Simulation Of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes Including Vacancy Defects, Neophytos Neophytou, Shaikh Ahmed, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The electronic behavior of metallic carbon nanotubes under the influence of externally applied electric fields is investigated using the Non-Equilibrium Green’s function method self consistently coupled with three-dimensional (3D) electrostatics. A nearest neighbor tight binding model based on a single pz orbital for constructing the device Hamiltonian is used. The 3D Poisson equation is solved using the Finite Element Method. Carbon nanotubes exhibit a very weak metallic behavior, and external electric fields can alter the electrostatic potential of the tubes significantly. A single vacancy defect in the channel of a metallic carbon nanotube can decrease its conductance by a factor …

Fabrication Of Fully Transparent Nanowire Transistors For Transparent And Flexible Electronics, Sanghyun Ju, Antonio Facchetti, Xi Xuan, Jun Liu, Fumaiki Ishikawa, P. D. Ye, Chongwu Zhou, Tobin J. Marks, David B. Janes Jun 2007

Fabrication Of Fully Transparent Nanowire Transistors For Transparent And Flexible Electronics, Sanghyun Ju, Antonio Facchetti, Xi Xuan, Jun Liu, Fumaiki Ishikawa, P. D. Ye, Chongwu Zhou, Tobin J. Marks, David B. Janes

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The development of optically transparent and mechanically flexible electronic circuitry is an essential step in the effort to develop next-generation display technologies, including 'see-through' and conformable products. Nanowire transistors (NWTs) are of particular interest for future display devices because of their high carrier mobilities compared with bulk or thin-film transistors made from the same materials, the prospect of processing at low temperatures compatible with plastic substrates, as well as their optical transparency and inherent mechanical flexibility. Here we report fully transparent In2O3 and ZnO NWTs fabricated on both glass and flexible plastic substrates, exhibiting high-performance n-type transistor characteristics with similar …

Radical Theology And The Reorganization Of The Us-American Religious System, Philippe Codde Jun 2007

Radical Theology And The Reorganization Of The Us-American Religious System, Philippe Codde

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Radical Theology and the Reorganization of the US-American Religious System," Philippe Codde uses the example of the highly popular movement of death-of-God theology in the 1960s to demonstrate the wide applicability for cultural research of Itamar Even-Zohar's polysystem theory and to illustrate the validity of Even-Zohar's assertion that peripheral elements in any system can yet occasion a dramatic shift in the system's central repertoires. Although Richard Rubenstein's reality model never made it to the center of the US-American religious system, his radical theology did impel the more traditional theologians in the center of the system finally to …

Globalisation, Empire, And The Vampire, Mario Vrbančić Jun 2007

Globalisation, Empire, And The Vampire, Mario Vrbančić

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Globalisation, Empire, and the Vampire," Mario Vrbančić opens up the question of the possibility of a dialectical utopian thinking in postmodernism. Following Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, Vrbančić analyses the vampire as the nation looking both at Hardt and Negri's theory of Empire and Žižek psychoanalytically inclined theory of nationalist identification. The vampire always occurs in the wake and decay of Empires: Dracula embodies Victorian fears of the infestation of the undead by invading the imperial centre; in America vampires disperse and multiply in popular culture and the mass media; in a newly emerging global order (Empire) they may …

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil Jun 2007

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Anand Patil examines in his paper, "The Rebirth of Comparative Literature in Anglocalization," the debates on effects of "globalization" on literary studies and "cultures" in India. The focus of his comparative scrutiny follows the debate about the "death" of comparative literature. Patil re-imagines the rebirth of interdisciplinarity, a basic tenet of the discipline of comparative literature and a characteristic of globalization. He has coined the term "Anglocalization" to analyze the complexity of the effects of globalization in the multilingual and multicultural situation of the sub-continent. The term is used to describe a tripartite process: Anglicization by global English, economic liberation, …

Empathy Versus Abstraction In Twentieth-Century German And Russian Aesthetics, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein Jun 2007

Empathy Versus Abstraction In Twentieth-Century German And Russian Aesthetics, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Empathy versus Abstraction in Twentieth-Century German and Russian Aesthetics," Thorsten Botz-Bornstein argues that Alexander Koyré has shown how the crisis of belief incited by Bacon, Montaigne, Pascal, and Descartes made that "man lost his place in the world." The German term Einfühlung (empathy) played an important role in the transformation of the relationship between the person and his/her world at the moment when modern science began to emerge. Botz-Bornstein examines the conceptual links between empathy and Verfremdung (in Russian ostranenie), and style by showing how German and Russian literary critics of the 1910s attempted to retrieve the …
