Stateful Detection In High Throughput Distributed Systems, Gunjan Khanna, Ignacio Laguna, Fahad Arshad, Saurabh Bagchi May 2007

Stateful Detection In High Throughput Distributed Systems, Gunjan Khanna, Ignacio Laguna, Fahad Arshad, Saurabh Bagchi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

With the increasing speed of computers, complexity of applications and large scale of applications, many of today’s distributed systems exchange data at a high rate. It is important to provide error detection capabilities to such applications that provide critical functionality. Significant prior work has been done in software implemented error detection achieved through a fault tolerance system separate from the application system. However, the high rate of data coupled with complex detection can cause the capacity of the fault tolerance system to be exhausted resulting in low detection accuracy. This is particularly the case when the detection is done against …

Distributed Diagnosis Of Failures In A Three Tier E-Commerce System, Fahad Arshad, Gunjan Khanna, Ignacio Laguna, Saurabh Bagchi May 2007

Distributed Diagnosis Of Failures In A Three Tier E-Commerce System, Fahad Arshad, Gunjan Khanna, Ignacio Laguna, Saurabh Bagchi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

For dependability outages in distributed internet infrastructures, it is often not enough to detect a failure, but it is also required to diagnose it, i.e., to identify its source. Complex applications deployed in multi-tier environments, such as the classic three tier e-commerce system, make diagnosis challenging because of fast error propagation, black-box applications, constraints on the diagnosis delay, the amount of states that can be maintained, and imperfect diagnostic tests. Here, we propose a probabilistic diagnosis model for arbitrary failures in components of a distributed application. The monitoring system (the Monitor) passively observes the message exchanges between the components and …

Optimal Multi-Agent Coordination Under Tree Formation Constraints, Wei Zhang, Jianghai Hu May 2007

Optimal Multi-Agent Coordination Under Tree Formation Constraints, Wei Zhang, Jianghai Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The optimal multi-agent coordination problem tries to find the motions for a group of agents that start from a set of initial positions and end at a set of destination positions with the least energy expenditure. Often times, the problem is formulated with constraints on the formation of the agents, namely, distances between certain pairs of agents need to be kept constant throughout the process. In this paper, the optimal multi-agent coordination problem is studied for the special case when the graph describing the formation constraint is a tree. The equations characterizing the optimal coordinated motions are derived in a …

Re-Reading Democracy And Education Today: John Dewey On Globalization And Democratic Education, Leonard J. Waks

Education and Culture

This article provides a close reading of Democracy and Education, situated in the context of Dewey's work prior to and during World War I, to illuminate the close tie between Dewey's overriding concerns during this period and today's educational concerns. The analysis suggests two projects for contemporary democractic educators.

Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich Apr 2007

Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich

Education and Culture

Interactive constructivism and its implications for education will be introduced in four steps. (1)The context of the approach and its relation to other constructivist developments will be discussed. (2)I will examine essential pragmatic criteria in the tradition of John Dewey that are relevant for interactive constructivism. (3)More decisively than Dewey interactive constructivism launches a meta-theoretical distinction between observers, participants, and agents. (4)Communication as a chief dimension of education can be analyzed out of three perspectives: the symbolic, the imaginative, and the real. Educators must recognize that their interaction with learners includes great demands not only in practical application/implementation but also …

Tuning Entanglement For Spin And Quantum Dot Systems, Sabre Kais, Zhen Huang Apr 2007

Tuning Entanglement For Spin And Quantum Dot Systems, Sabre Kais, Zhen Huang

Birck Poster Sessions

The new research field of quantum information and computation has emerged on the intersection between quantum physics, computer science and mathematics. Its main idea is to treat information on the basis of quantum mechanics so that computation and communication are done with essentially quantum elements. At present quantum information attracts enormous interest of scientific community becoming the priority research direction for many academic institution and private companies. Our research has focused on quantifying and tuning the Entanglement, teleportation using quantum dots, decoherence in spin systems and solid state implementations of qubits.

The Regenstrief Center For Healthcare Engineering: Designing, Implementing, And Sustaining Interdisciplinary Solutions To Transform Healthcare Delivery Systems, Steven M. Witz Apr 2007

The Regenstrief Center For Healthcare Engineering: Designing, Implementing, And Sustaining Interdisciplinary Solutions To Transform Healthcare Delivery Systems, Steven M. Witz

RCHE Reports

Abstract: With start-up funding provided by the Regenstrief Foundation,Purdue University has created the Regenstrief Center for HealthcareEngineering (RCHE) to design, implement, and sustain interdisciplinarysolutions to improve the safety, quality, efficiency and accessibility ofhealthcare delivery systems. RCHE’s primary goal is to bring a systems- analysis approach to improving the processes of healthcare delivery, not toprovide tools or techniques for medical research, diagnosis, or treatment. Thisarticle will describe RCHE’s business model; that is, how RCHE ‘engineers’ interdisciplinary solutions, using the multiple perspectives of healthcare andmultiple project time scales to organise and leverage healthcare deliverytransformation. We then illustrate the model through the description …

Impact Of Patient Selection Criteria On Prevalence Estimates And Prevalence Of Diagnosed Dementia In A Medicaid Population, Murtuza F. Bharmal, Michael Weiner, Laura P. Sands, Huiping Xu, Bruce A. Craig, Joseph Thomas Iii Apr 2007

Impact Of Patient Selection Criteria On Prevalence Estimates And Prevalence Of Diagnosed Dementia In A Medicaid Population, Murtuza F. Bharmal, Michael Weiner, Laura P. Sands, Huiping Xu, Bruce A. Craig, Joseph Thomas Iii

RCHE Publications

This study estimated the prevalence of diagnosed dementia among Indiana Medicaid beneficiaries in 2004. The dependence of prevalence estimates upon use of several patient selection criteria to identify patients with dementia also was evaluated.
