Twain's A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court And U.S. Imperialism, Jennifer A. O'Neill Sep 2007

Twain's A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court And U.S. Imperialism, Jennifer A. O'Neill

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Twain's novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and U.S. Imperialism," Jennifer A. O'Neill argues that while it Twain's text is commonly viewed as an attack on monarchy and the Catholic church, one of the book's primary focuses is U.S. imperialism. In the scholarship of Twain's text some have acknowledged the text as a discussion of colonialism, most tend to see it as an exaltation of "civilizing" efforts rather than the scalding indictment it was clearly intended to be. Indeed, Twain embraced U.S. colonial efforts in the Pacific early in his life but by the time …

The Dream Scene And The Future Of Vision In The City Of Lost Children And Until The End Of The World, Donna Wilkerson-Barker Sep 2007

The Dream Scene And The Future Of Vision In The City Of Lost Children And Until The End Of The World, Donna Wilkerson-Barker

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "The Dream Scene and the Future of Vision in The City of Lost Children and Until the End of the World," Donna Wilkerson-Barker examines how these films investigate the place of imagination (or representation) in postmodern visual culture through their portrayal of technologized vision as an obstacle to experience. Drawing parallels between the dream scenes in these films and virtual reality and cyberspace, she argues that image technologies in The City of Lost Children and Until the End of the World lead to a dissociation of experience from corporeal reality, a dissociation that is ultimately linked to …

Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman Sep 2007

Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman proposes in his article "Chaos Theory and Literature from an Existentialist Perspective" that in literature the relation, principles, and processes of chaos and order can be analyzed from an existentialist perspective. Chaos lies at the heart of nothingness and order is the appearance of the achievement it tries to realize, temporary it may seem. Aman argues that with the application of chaos theory to works of literature may yield new insight and applies in his paper aspects of chaos theory reading three literary works which represent three different literatures and cultures, namely Arabic, English, and French. …

A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?, William H. Thornton Sep 2007

A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?, William H. Thornton

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

William H. Thornton undertakes in his article, "A Postmodern Solzhenitsyn?," to bring Solzhenitsyn in from the cold, critically speaking, by closing the gap between him and his many postmodern detractors. That gap has been premised on the rough equivalence of poststructuralism and postmodernism. The postmodern realism advanced in this study challenges not only Solzhenitsyn's critics but his own stated aversion to postmodernism. Operating on both a microhistorical and macrohistorical plane, Solzhenitsyn's literary historiography testifies to the awesome scope of the gulag while never losing sight of its human factor. The double vision of Solzhenitsyn's proto-postmodern referentiality, a simultaneous centering and decentering, …

Characterizing Vlan Usage In An Operational Network, Prashant Garimella, Yu-Wei Sung, Nan Zhang, Sanjay Rao Aug 2007

Characterizing Vlan Usage In An Operational Network, Prashant Garimella, Yu-Wei Sung, Nan Zhang, Sanjay Rao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we present a study characterizing VLAN us- age in a large-sized campus network. Despite their extensive prevalence in enterprise and campus networks, the usage of VLANs has received little systematic treatment in the re- search community. Our study is conducted using a white- box approach, involving data such as router configuration files obtained from network operators, and through itera- tive interactions with them. Our study shows that the use of virtualization is prevalent to enable users belonging to physically disparate locations to be treated as a group. We demonstrate and characterize the performance inefficiencies resulting from virtualization. …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Abstract. Wireless Sensor Networks are increasingly being used for data monitoring in commercial, industrial, and military applications. Security is of great concern from many different viewpoints: ensuring that sensitive data does not fall into wrong hands; ensuring that the received data has not been doctored; and ensuring that the network is resilient to denial of service attacks. We study the fundamental problem of Secure Neighbor Discovery problem, which is critical to protecting the network against a number of different forms of attacks. Sensor networks, deployed in hazardous environment, are exposed to a variety of attacks like eavesdropping, message tampering, selective …

Legal Education And Early Career Mentoring: Mid-Career Attorneys’ Pro Bono Commitment, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Aug 2007

Legal Education And Early Career Mentoring: Mid-Career Attorneys’ Pro Bono Commitment, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

Much extant research suggests that students who enter law school highly enthusiastic about public interest law and pro bono work often take mainstream jobs with minimal participation in pro bono activities. Frequently, these studies place some of the blame on law schools. This study, however, suggests that law schools, as well as mentors in first post-graduation jobs, might positively affect attorneys' level of commitment to pro bono work. This longitudinal study is unique in that it includes measures of students' attitudes during law school and in mid-career. It raises the possibility that attorneys whose level of commitment to pro bono …

Fsm-Based Model For Spatio-Temporal Event Recognition For Hcs, Wamiq Manzoor Ahmed, Arif Ghafoor, J. Paul Robinson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

High-throughput biological imaging promises to be a powerful tool for modern biological research. These imaging technologies are used to monitor the behavior of large populations of cells in response to different experimental conditions. The resulting knowledge can help in drug discovery and in understanding biological phenomena. Different imaging modalities are used for high-throughput imaging. These include 2D fluorescence images, 3D confocal datasets, time-lapse image sequences, and multispectral images. Integrated analysis of these multi-modality spatial, temporal, and spectral data sets for extracting quantitative knowledge is challenging and requires new modeling and data processing tools. This paper presents a multi-layered architecture and …

Internal Entanglement Amplification By External Interactions, Uri Peskin, Zhen Huang, Sabre Kais Jul 2007

Internal Entanglement Amplification By External Interactions, Uri Peskin, Zhen Huang, Sabre Kais

Other Nanotechnology Publications

We propose a scheme to control the level of entanglement between two fixed spin-1/2 systems by interaction with a third particle. For specific designs, entanglement is shown to be "pumped" into the system from the surroundings even when the spin-spin interaction within the system is small or nonexistent. The effect of the external particle on the system is introduced by including a dynamic spinor in the Hamiltonian. Controlled amplification of the internal entanglement to its maximum value is demonstrated. The possibility of entangling noninteracting spins in a stationary state is also demonstrated by coupling each one of them to a …

Access To Global Information—A Case Of Digital Divide In Bangladesh, Anisur Rahman Jun 2007

Access To Global Information—A Case Of Digital Divide In Bangladesh, Anisur Rahman

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

ICTs can reduce communication costs and break down geographical borders. In the developed nations government policies are being established which attempt to ensure that all citizens will get the opportunity to access the effective use of ICTs in order to enable them to participate in the educational, social and economic activities and democratic processes. Developed countries are getting much benefit from the advancement of ICTs. There is digital divide between developed and developing countries. The term digital divide has been applied to the gap that exists in most countries between those with ready access to the tools of ICTs, and …

Measuring Human Performance On Clustering Problems: Some Potential Objective Criteria And Experimental Research Opportunities, Michael Brusco

The Journal of Problem Solving

The study of human performance on discrete optimization problems has a considerable history that spans various disciplines. The two most widely studied problems are the Euclidean traveling salesperson problem and the quadratic assignment problem. The purpose of this paper is to outline a program of study for the measurement of human performance on discrete optimization problems related to clustering of points in the two-dimensional plane. I describe possible objective criteria for clustering problems, the measurement of agreement of solutions produced by subjects, and categories of experiments for investigating human performance on clustering problems.

Library Service-Oriented Architecture To Enhance Access To Science, Richard Akerman Jun 2007

Library Service-Oriented Architecture To Enhance Access To Science, Richard Akerman

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the digital world, library services need to be transformed to recognize that automation and machine-to-machine communication of information enables many advanced features. NRC CISTI, Canada's National Science Library, has addressed this challenge using Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Using SOA based on Enterprise Architecture, we have modeled services provided by the catalogue, services related to document delivery, and advanced services to provide more open data access. We will present a completed model of some library business functions, discuss the challenges of implementing an SOA within the library technology environment, and present our vision of how library SOA is an important enabler …

Enabling International Access To Scientific Data Sets: Creation Of The Distributed Data Curation Center (D2c2), James L. Mullins

Libraries Research Publications

The challenge of accessing, maintaining, sharing and preserving massive datasets, generally referred to as data curation, has been a direct result of computational e-science. Although scientists and engineers recognized the problem, the solution was not apparent. The principles that underlay library science are not widely understood or appreciated by those outside librarianship. The theory and principles behind librarianship are obscured by historical application primarily to print materials – books and journals – however, the same principles that apply to organization, retrieval, and preservation of print materials apply to the digital realm as well.

Facilitating The Deposit Of Experimental Chemistry Data In Institutional Repositories: Project Spectra, Peter Morgan, Jim Downing, Peter Murray-Rust, Alan Tonge, Fiona Cotterill, Henry Rzepa, Lorraine Windsor

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Institutional Open Access repositories are becoming established as an important part of the university library and information services infrastructure. While early efforts to populate them with content have concentrated on the deposit of peer-reviewed research papers, there is a growing awareness of their potential as repositories of data and other non-text materials, and consequently a need to develop strategies and procedures that can realise this potential. Chemistry as a discipline has been slower than the physical and biomedical sciences to adopt and exploit Open Access concepts in the handling of experimental data and research publications. Chemical information is essential to …

Multiple-Channel Silicon Micro-Resonator Based Filters For Wdm Applications, Shijun Xiao, Maroof H. Khan, Hao Shen, Minghao Qi Jun 2007

Multiple-Channel Silicon Micro-Resonator Based Filters For Wdm Applications, Shijun Xiao, Maroof H. Khan, Hao Shen, Minghao Qi

Birck and NCN Publications

We demonstrate predictable resonance wavelength shifts in silicon micro-resonators by varying their perimeters using high-resolution lithography. The linear coefficient between the resonance wavelength shifts and the perimeter changes is determined with detailed experiments, and found to be nearly constant across the C and L bands in telecommunications. This empirical coefficient is also compared to that obtained from simulations on straight waveguides. Based on the linear model, without post-fabrication trimming or tuning, an eight-channel wavelength de-multiplexer with reasonably predicted average channel spacing similar to 1.8 +/- 0.1 nm (3dB bandwidth similar to 0.7 +/- 0.1 nm) is demonstrated at telecommunication bands …

The Brazilian Model For Free Access To Scientific Publications, Pablo Ortellado, Jorge Machado Jun 2007

The Brazilian Model For Free Access To Scientific Publications, Pablo Ortellado, Jorge Machado

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Although Brazil lacks a cohesive national policy for free access to scientific publications, local initiatives by universities, funding agencies and state and federal government make up the framework for a full policy for free access. The paper aims at putting together the pieces and presenting a general picture of what such policy might be: free access to all Brazilian theses and dissertations through digital repositories; institutional protection for the copying of books for academic purposes; fomenting publicly funded peer-reviewed non author fee free access journals; qualitative (instead of quantitative/ impact based) evaluation for scientists publishing in free access journals. The …
