Examining Attachment Styles In Adult Adoptees Using The Bird’S Nest Drawing, Kim Clemens
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine adult attachment styles seen in the Bird’s Nest Drawings of adopted adults, compared to those seen in non-adopted adults. A sample of 17 participants (16 non-adopted adults and 1 adopted adult) in the age range of 21-57 completed a Bird’s Nest Drawing (BND), Bird’s Nest Drawing Story, Adult Attachment Scale Questionnaire, and a demographic questionnaire.
The BND was devised by Donna Kaiser to assess secure and insecure attachment as seen through graphic indicators in a projective drawing test. Kaiser’s February 2012 updated BND checklist is comprised of 14 hypothesized graphic indicator items, …

Level Up—A Case For Female Gamers, Kuljit Brar
Level Up—A Case For Female Gamers, Kuljit Brar
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The paper addresses the notion that video games are perceived as a boys-only territory, looking into the reasons why there is a significant lack of female presence both inside games – through characters and plotlines – and outside games in the form of female gamers. The discussion examines the hazards female gamers face in attempting to enter virtual play spaces that are unwelcoming to them, and what is at stake if the video game industry continues down a male-centric path. Diagnosing the causes of these maladies, the paper focuses its attention on determining how the makers of video games can …
Ga(Y)Mer Theory: Queer Modding As Resistance, Evan W. Lauteria
Ga(Y)Mer Theory: Queer Modding As Resistance, Evan W. Lauteria
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In the mid-20th century, scholars Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois positioned play as a pre-civilized human activity that is resistant to capitalism and rationalization. McKenzie Wark extends a theory relationship between play and resistance to contemporary global capitalism in Gamer Theory, a critical theory of games that rests on the gamer standpoint. Gamers are most capable of bearing witness to the injustices of the social realm in contrast to the “fair” structures of game worlds. However, video games as formal rule structures are embedded with ideological forces, products themselves of capitalist enterprise, and video game simulations are powerful normative …

Mass Effect’S Joker, The Supercrip, And The Normate Body, Amanda Joyal
Mass Effect’S Joker, The Supercrip, And The Normate Body, Amanda Joyal
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This essay examines Joker through the lens of the “supercrip,” a term disability theorists use to discuss disabled characters who because of, or in spite of, their disability, are perceived as possessing extraordinary talent. In the case of Mass Effect, the player and Commander Shepard are seen as normates, defined in opposition to Joker and the supercrip. The supercrip character allows the able-bodied to view disability as something other than physical suffering. This essay argues that Joker is a character designed for the able-bodied player; he compensates for his disability through humor and his unmatched ability to fly the …
Gender Issues, Fighting Games, And Progress: An Analysis Of A Genderless Character In Tekken 6, Leland Fecher
Gender Issues, Fighting Games, And Progress: An Analysis Of A Genderless Character In Tekken 6, Leland Fecher
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In 2009, the fighting game Tekken 6 included a character called Leo. In the art book included in the special edition of the game, the game developers revealed that Leo was purposefully never assigned a gender so that both male and female players could relate to the fighter. While the inclusion of a genderless character seemed progressive for gender representation in video games, the response of the players showed otherwise. I argue that the inclusion of an androgynous character in a well-established game franchise context did more harm than good. John Sloop refers to this idea as “gender disciplining,” which …
The Development And Validation Of The Preference For Adherence To Theoretical Orientation Scale, Tiffinee S. Hamilton
The Development And Validation Of The Preference For Adherence To Theoretical Orientation Scale, Tiffinee S. Hamilton
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
One of the most common criticisms of undergraduate and master's level graduate programs is that students lack the ability to define their view of human nature. One effective means of assisting students in their desire to identify their preference in orientation is the use of a validated psychometric instrument developed for mental health trainees. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop and initially validate a new assessment tool, the Preference for Adherence to Theoretical Orientation Scale (PATOS). PATOS provides a theoretically grounded method for assessing a counselor's preference for a particular orientation(s) as well as adherence to a …
Evidence-Based Practice For The Athletic Training Profession, Cailee Elizabeth Welch
Evidence-Based Practice For The Athletic Training Profession, Cailee Elizabeth Welch
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
As evidence-based practice (EBP) becomes a necessity in athletic training, it is essential to recognize current barriers and modes of accessibility to information for enhancement of clinical decision-making. Furthermore, the effectiveness of educational interventions (EI) to enhance knowledge of EBP concepts must be investigated. The aim of Project I was to assess attitudes and beliefs, perceived barriers, and accessibility to resources of EBP among athletic trainers (AT). Project II was designed to investigate the effect of an EI on enhancing AT's knowledge of EBP concepts. Project III explored ATs' experiences of the EI and whether it elicited changes within their …
Synergistic Effect Of Subnanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields And Temperature On The Viability Of Biological Cells, James Thomas Camp
Synergistic Effect Of Subnanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields And Temperature On The Viability Of Biological Cells, James Thomas Camp
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Pulsed electric fields have been used to induce a biological response in cells, and at sufficient energy, can cause cell death. By reducing the pulse duration from presently used nanosecond to subnanosecond ranges, the electric field can be delivered to biological tissue non-invasively by the use of an antenna instead of electrodes, such as needles. Studies have previously been completed in which the aim was to determine the energy density (electric field strength, number of pulses) required to induce cell death with 800 ps pulses. Based on this data, it was concluded that for pulse durations of 200 ps, with …
Optimization Framework For A Radio Frequency Gun Based Injector, Alicia S. Hofler
Optimization Framework For A Radio Frequency Gun Based Injector, Alicia S. Hofler
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Linear accelerator based light sources are used to produce coherent x-ray beams with unprecedented peak intensity. In these devices, the key parameters of the photon beam such as brilliance and coherence are directly dependent on the electron beam parameters. This leads to stringent beam quality requirements for the electron beam source. Radio frequency (RF) guns are used in such light sources since they accelerate electrons to relativistic energies over a very short distance, thus minimizing the beam quality degradation due to space charge effects within the particle bunch. Designing such sources including optimization of its beam parameters is a complex …
An Efficient Boosted Classifier Tree-Based Feature Point Tracking System For Facial Expression Analysis, Adam Redd Livingston
An Efficient Boosted Classifier Tree-Based Feature Point Tracking System For Facial Expression Analysis, Adam Redd Livingston
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The study of facial movement and expression has been a prominent area of research since the early work of Charles Darwin. The Facial Action Coding System (FACS), developed by Paul Ekman, introduced the first universal method of coding and measuring facial movement. Human-Computer Interaction seeks to make human interaction with computer systems more effective, easier, safer, and more seamless. Facial expression recognition can be broken down into three distinctive subsections: Facial Feature Localization, Facial Action Recognition, and Facial Expression Classification. The first and most important stage in any facial expression analysis system is the localization of key facial features. Localization …
Creation Of Large Scale Face Dataset Using Single Training Image, Qun Wang
Creation Of Large Scale Face Dataset Using Single Training Image, Qun Wang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Face recognition (FR) has become one of the most successful applications of image analysis and understanding in computer vision. The learning-based model in FR is considered as one of the most favorable problem-solving methods to this issue, which leads to the requirement of large training data sets in order to achieve higher recognition accuracy. However, the availability of only a limited number of face images for training a FR system is always a common problem in practical applications. A new framework to create a face database from a single input image for training purposes is proposed in this dissertation research. …
The Impact Of Sleepiness And Sleep Constructs On Driving Performance, Jennifer Freeman May
The Impact Of Sleepiness And Sleep Constructs On Driving Performance, Jennifer Freeman May
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Sleepiness causes performance decrements that lead to thousands of crashes and fatalities annually. Research supports the conclusions that sleep duration and circadian rhythms impact sleepiness and affect driving performance. Conflicting in the literature is whether severity of sleep disorders, sleep quality and subjective sleepiness affect driving performance. The correlation between a driver's perception of their sleepiness and their driving performance is also unclear. The primary goal of this study was to create an in-depth model demonstrating which measures of sleepiness influence driving performance. It was hypothesized that sleep quality, sleep apnea severity and subjective sleepiness add to a model of …
