Gammaropsis Arawakia, A New Species Of Marine Amphipoda (Crustacea) From Jamaica, James Darwin Thomas, J. L. Barnard

One of the dominant amphipods in algal turf communities at Discovery Bay, Jamaica, is a new species, Gammaropsis arawakia, characterized by long peduncle of uropod 3, small coxa I, 3-articulate accessory flagellum, extremely setose gnathopod 2, one pair of dorsal teeth on urosomite I, pointed ocular lobe, and oblique upper margin of cephalic sinus for antenna 2.

Synopia ultramarina is redescribed from the Gulf Stream and the Florida Keys and comments are made on the tangled taxonomy in Synopia. Tiron bellairsi, originally described from Barbados, is reported from Belize, at the opposite side of the Caribbean Basin. Garosyrrhoe bigarra, a Pacific species, is also reported from Belize, but no clear subspecific differences are detected as yet between Pacific and Atlantic populations.

A new species Ampelisca burkei, from Florida, is described. This species appears to be very close to A. lobata Holmes, from the eastern Pacific Ocean, but differs in the shape and setation of article 4 on pereopod 7, and the presence of an anteroventral spine-seta on article 5 of pereopod 7.

A Model For Improving The Teaching Of Problem Solving At The Intermediate School Level, Philip Cull

This practicum was designed to provide teachers and their students with the problem-solving techniques and skills necessary for success in a problems course. The second aim was to develop a repertoire of problem-solving techniques that would have transfer circular application.

Teachers' and students' problem-solving skills were determined through reports from teleconferences, questionnaires, teacher observations, and student test project results. It was determined that a comprehensive list of heuristics for developing problem-solving strategies coupled with a model for emulation would provide the direction needed for the teachers and students. The focus of this project was to design a practical peace education program for a specific preschool setting. Primary goals were to provide developmentally appropriate experiences for, number one, increasing understanding of being a peacemaker at home and school, number two, gaining respect for nature and the environment through active involvement, number three, showing compassion toward the exceptional other, especially the hearing impaired, number four, becoming aware of some other cultures. Emergence Of Higher Education Technical Evaluations Of Mathematics Instructors, Johanna Ellner

The doctorate degree has been the prerequisite for a successful career in college teaching. Throughout history the educational elitists theory for educators has not been questioned, even though students populations and teaching styles have changed considerably over the years. In this study the results of student evaluations of faculty were used to determine whether the educational degree of a mathematics instructor at New York City Technical College was a significant factor in students perceptions of an instructor’s effectiveness.

During Spring, 1988 a ten-item student opinion survey was distributed to 738 students enrolled in forty-four mathematics classes. Fourteen classes were taught …

Previous characterization of GLI, a gene found to be amplified and expressed in a subset of human brain tumors, revealed the presence of five tandem zinc fingers related to those of Krüppel (Kr), a Drosophila segmentation gene of the gap class. We have used the GLI cDNA as a molecular probe to isolate related sequences from the human genome. Partial characterization of six related loci, including sequence determination, expression studies, and chromosome localization, revealed that each locus could encode a separate finger protein. In order to address the problems of preparation that many rural Alaskans have when they first arrive at college. Sheldon Jackson College developed a program, the Early College Incentive Program (ECIP), designed to expose 8th grade rural students to the learning and living requirements of college. In June. 1988, the next phase of the preparatory process will be initiated: an advanced college preparation program for 11th graders who successfully completed the initial program.

Human light chain genes are used in a κ before λ order. Accompanying this hierarchy is the rearrangement of a κ-deleting element (Kde) which eliminates the kappa locus before λ gene rearrangement. In approximately 60% of rearrangements the Kde recombines at a conserved heptamer within the J_κ-C_κ intron. We demonstrated that aberrant V/J rearrangements possessing apparent "N" nucleotides existed 5' to the J_κ-Kde rearrangements. This suggests that the Kde may selectively eliminate nonfunctional V/J alleles. A κ-producing cell that displayed the unusual finding of λ gene rearrangement demonstrated a rearranged Kde. The conceptual framework used by Chabot College's Associate. Degree nursing program was criticized by the State Board of Nursing and by the nursing students as lacking in clarity and consistency in faculty implementation. The faculty subsequently discussed the need to formalized the conceptual framework and its implementation into a written guide book for use by both faculty and students. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a guide book that would incorporate the conceptual framework of the nursing program's curriculum.

The Physiological Implications Of Bleaching Of Corals Off Southeast Florida, C. J. Reese, G. S. Kleppel, Richard E. Dodge

As part of an ongoing study of coral bleaching, observations were made of corals on reefs (ca. 8m) off John U. Lloyd Beach, Dania, FL, in December, 1987. Bleaching was evident in approximately 50% of Montastrea annularis, the dominant scleractinian coral species. Quantitative pigment measurements by HPLC show that bleached corals contained
