Ensayara Jumane, A New Species From Belize, Caribbean Sea (Amphipoda, Lysianassidae), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas

Ensayara jumane is described from Belize. It differs from the west Mexican Ensayara ramonella J. L. Barnard (1964) in the excavate posteroventral margins of article 2 on pereopods 5-7, and the sparse (9 versus 25) setae on articles 5-6 of gnathopod I. A new diagnosis for Ensayara, a key to species, list of species, references to original descriptions and geographic codes for each species are provided. This is the first record of the genus from the Caribbean Sea.

The new species Gitana dominica is described from Dominica in the Lesser Antilles; it is the first record of the genus from the western Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from its closest relative, Gitana calitemplado, from California, in the shorter and posteroventrally excavate coxa 1. Gitana is reviewed.

Analysis Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages Birch Landings, Fort Lauderdale, Fl, Charles G. Messing

Quantitative analysis of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Intracoastal Waterway in an area of proposed dredge and fill adjacent to existing sea wall at Birch Landings, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Broward County) reveals a community dominated by a small number of annelid worm species typical of stressed, high organic content, moderately reduced salinity, estuarine and canal habitats found along much of coastal south Florida. It is concluded that the proposed construction will impact no unique assemblage of organisms nor affect significantly the population resources of any macroinvertebrate species.

Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.

This practicum was designed to introduce kindergarten students to marine science through a hands-on process approach in a wetland environment. The primary goal was to immerse young children in science through active experimental learning rather than secondhand knowledge. The second aim was to offer young children the opportunity to study the wetlands and to see firsthand how fragile the world's ecosystems are so that they may realize the importance of maintaining them.

The purpose of this study was to identify those variables which influenced health status, develop a survey instrument which established the prevalence of these variables among the county's elderly population, evaluate the results of the survey, and develop and implement a comprehensive educational program to meet the identified needs. Life events, along with demographic and other psychosocial variables, affect health status. It is anticipated that based upon the results of this study, the Community Medical Center (CMC) can develop programs which make coping with these events and variables easier and reduce their negative affects on thee elderly's health status.

The traditional concerns of public health have been the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the prevention of premature death. As death from communicable diseases and conditions of pregnancy and early infancy decrease, public health interests are being expanded toward the prevention of premature death from chronic diseases.

Low performance in a basic eighth-grade earth science class was addressed by a one-class-period per week self-esteem unit presented by the writer and daily positive self-concept reinforcement methods implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Students were presented concepts of self-esteem such as "self-talk,” “irrational beliefs,” “setting and attaining goals,” and “positive relationships” and participated in discussions concerning their feelings about themselves, school, families, and others. There was a standardized measure of self-esteem pretest and posttest, and student performance was measured via comparison of their earth science grade average between the first and the tenth week. In 1987, Nova University (Contractor) with ERM South (Subcontractor) was awarded a contract to provide biological monitoring services for the John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area Beach Renourishment Project. A notice to proceed for the initial biological monitoring (phase I - Preconstruction) was issued in February, 1989. Field monitoring took place in February and March, 1989. Laboratory work has continued from March, 1989 to present. The renourishment dredging took place from May 16, 1989 to July 14, 1989. Approximately 603,000 cu yds of sediment were removed and subsequently emplaced on 1.6 miles of shoreline. Within the next 6 months, Broward …

Three human mRNAs are regulated post-transcriptionally by iron via iron-responsive elements (IREs) contained in each mRNA. A cytoplasmic protein (IRE-BP) binds to these cis-acting elements and mediates the translational regulation of ferritin H- and L-chain mRNA and the iron-dependent stability of transferrin receptor (TfR) mRNA. We have taken advantage of the different mobilities of the human and rodent IRE/IRE-BP complexes on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels to determine the chromosomal localization of the gene encoding the IRE-BP. Utilizing a panel of 34 different human/rodent hybrid cell lines we have assigned the IRE-BP gene to human chromosome 9. This new technique based on …

Improving Academic Achievement Through Building Self-Esteem In At Risk Limited English Proficient Ninth Grade Haitian Students, Gloria H. Myrick

A self-esteem building program was developed and implemented to reduce the failure and potential dropout rate of limited English proficient ninth grade Haitian students who were failing two or more academic classes. Self-esteem building exercises and counseling sessions were employed over a 10-week development period. Instruments for measuring self-esteem, The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Inventory (Piers, and Harris, 1977) and The Demos Dropout Scale (Demos, 1970) were used. The results indicated increased levels of achievement for the target group when comparing their pretest and posttest. The deficiency among ninth grade science students to think scientifically and the lack of resource materials to teach the skills of scientific inquiry prompted the development and imp implementation of a comprehensive unit of study, “The Scientific Method.” Inductively, this module forced the target students to think scientifically and thereby discover the process of scientific investigation. The program was deemed successful based on the results of post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a D_δ1D_δ2J_δ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …

The high percentage of students with difficulty in solving free-response problems related to the mole concept was addressed by implementation of reading skill strategies and computer aided instruction. Frayer models, semantic mapping and graphic organizers from Reading in the Content Area (RICA) were employed to increase student understanding of the scientific principles involved. Computers and a variety of computer programs from COMPress and Knowledge Factory were used by the target group for review, drill, and practice in relating their math skills to solving problems. Using Metacognitive Strategies To Increase Reading Comprehension In The Social Studies Content Area, Joanne E. Moore

A large number of academic deficiencies among ninth and tenth grade students in a college preparatory school signaled a problem diagnosed as poor reading comprehension in the Social Students content area. The Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test and the Coopersmith Self-esteem Test were administered to ascertain these problems in comprehension and resulting poor performance on tests/quizzes. A teacher authored test readily showed that the problems did exist. Students were taught five metacognitive study skills strategies, grouped in cooperative leaning peer groups, and taught mapping or clustering to aid notetaking and recall.
