Vadosiapus Copacabanus, A New Genus And Species Of Exoedicerotidae From Brazil (Crustacea, Amphipoda), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas

Vadosiapus copacabanus, n. gen. is described from the surf zone on the beach at Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The genus and unique species is related to the three known species of Bathyporeiapus, which range southward from Brazil through the Magellan region of South America. Vadosiapus is distinguished from Bathyporeiapus in the odd phoxocephalid-like article 3 of the mandibular palp, the nonsinuate epimeron 2, the broadened tel son bearing only midsagittal armaments and the enlarged dactyl of gnathopod 2.

Elasmopus Balkomanus, A New Species From The Florida Keys (Crustacea, Amphipoda), James Darwin Thomas, J. L. Barnard

Elasmopus balkomanus is described from Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys. The species is very close to the eastern Pacific E. antennatus but in the male has equally extending rami on uropod 3, only 2 (versus 4-6) spines on each lobe of the tel son in adults, a lateral ridge on the propodus of male gnathopod 2 and very heavily armed flagella of antenna 2 in the male.

This species lives in a short-tufted algal turf community on coral rubble but apparently is rare because it has only been collected once in 10 years of sampling in the Florida …

Ipanemidae, New Family, Ipanema Talpa, New Genus And Species, From The Surf Zone Of Brazil (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Haustorioidea), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas

A new family of haustorioid Amphipoda resembling the Phoxocephalopsidae and Urothoidae has been discovered in sands of the surf zone off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like the recently described Cheidae, the new speciesgenus- family combines various characters of haustorioids in a unique manner and bears one unprecedented apomorphic character: an alate, uncleft telson.

The new taxon has the following characters of Urothoidae: antenna 2, head, and distal parts of pereopods but has a distinctive antenna I, coxae 1-2, mandibular palp, telson and epimera 1-2. An Ecological Perspective On Deafness, Michael A. Harvey, Barry Dym

This paper offers an ecological view of deaf ness to assist rehabilitation counselors and clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that deaf persons may present. An ecological perspective identifies the many hierarchically arranged, biopsychhsocial levels which influence the development of deaf persons. It further identifies the sequences of interaction (the exchanges of information) which occur both within and between levels, and which include the creation, labeling and reifying of symptoms. The organization of ecological fields is described by a cybernetic model from the discipline of family therapy. A detailed case example is presented.

Recreation Strategies For The Retention Of First-Semester College Students, Richard P. Chesterman

The high dropout rate of first-semester freshmen in a small, church-related college was addressed by the implementation of an organized recreation/activity strategy. This strategy was designed to provide appropriate entertainment and to contribute to a positive environment in order to integrate first-semester freshmen into the college environment and thereby increase retention. Evaluation instruments measured student--as well as faculty, staff, and administration--satisfaction with the campus environment and social/recreational activities. Moreover participation was monitored to assess the level of involvement.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

A cDNA clone encoding the B1 chain of human laminin has been isolated from a human endothelial cell cDNA library. With use of this probe and a panel of rodent/human somatic-cell hybrids and in situ hybridization, the gene for the human laminin-B1 chain has been localized to chromosome 7, band q31.

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.

Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). The author designed a Curriculum Resource Guide for the TK-1 teacher using a Quality Circle Team approach. The intent of this practicum was to provide the TI-1 teachers with a Resource Guide to aid in curriculum planning for the TK-1 developmental placement class.

This problem was addressed by the design and implementation of a Diagnostic Health Fitness program for the college level student. The program's aims are to provide students with a basis for intelligent selection of habits, behaviorisms and programs to enable them to maintain a high quality of health and fitness throughout a lifetime. The majority of ninth grade students indicated a strong negative attitude toward the study of Shakespearean drama. The same students had difficulty comprehending the Shakespearean language, understanding the plot and characters and recalling important information in the play. The degree of difficulty which these students exhibited was indicated by the best average grades earned on a comprehensive pretest of the play, Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. The teaching strategy used to correct the problem was script-based improvisation and mapping. This strategy involved much activity and utilization of all the senses. This project demonstrated that children with special needs can succeed in a college preparatory school. Using a faculty and staff member questionnaire and a parent questionnaire, the writer identified the following special needs among the students at the practicum site. (a) learning disabilities, (b) speech and language disorders, ( c) hearing impairments, ( d) visual impairments, ( e) physical disability, and (t) behavior disorders. At the practicum site, when a parent was contacted concerning a child's identified special need that could be fully corrected at the school site, the parent was generally directed to seek out-of-school help. In cloning adenovirus homologous sequences, from a human cosmid library, we identified a moderately repetitive DNA sequence family consisting of tandem arrays of 2.5 kb members. A member was sequenced and several non-adjacent, 15–20 bp G-C rich segments with homology to the left side of adenovirus were discovered. The copy number of 400 members is highly conserved among humans. Southern blots of partial digests of human DNA have verified the tandem array of the sequence family. The chromosomal location was defined by somatic cell genetics and in situ hybridization. Tandem arrays are found only on chromosomes 4 (4q31) and 19 …
