Efficient Location Identification Of Multiple Line Outages With Limited Pmus In Smart Grids, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The efficient location identification of multiple line outages is critical to not only cascading failure elimination but also repair cost reduction. Most of existing methods, however, fail to handle location identification well. This failure typically occurs because the methods cannot overcome two challenges: the very limited number of phasor measurement units (PMUs) and the high computational complexity. This paper presents an efficient algorithm inspired by the ambiguity group theory to identify the locations of line outages with limited PMUs. Using 14-, 57-, 118-, 300-, and 2383-bus systems, our experimental study demonstrates that the proposed technique successfully identifies the most likely …

On The Efficacy Of Through-Silicon-Via Inductors, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Rongbo Yang, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-silicon-vias (TSVs) can potentially be used to implement inductors in 3-D integrated systems for minimal footprint and large inductance. However, different from conventional 2-D spiral inductors, TSV inductors are fully buried in the lossy substrate, thus suffering from low quality factors. In this paper, we systematically examine how various process and design parameters affect their performance. A few interesting phenomena that are unique to TSV inductors are observed. We then propose a novel shield mechanism utilizing the microchannel, a technique conventionally used for heat removal, to reduce the substrate loss. The technique increases the quality factor and inductance of the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, a counter-doped junction termination extension (CD-JTE) structure was experimentally implemented and studied. Two groups of 4H-SiC PiN diodes were fabricated with two n-type drift layer thicknesses of 11 and 30 \mu \text{m}, respectively, and with different termination structures, in order to demonstrate the wide JTE dose tolerance of CD-JTE. Three different doses, 1.7 \times 10^{13}, 2.2\times 10^{13} , and 2.8\times 10^{13} cm ^{-2} , were used for the critical JTE implantation. The measured breakdown voltages (BVs) of the diodes with all termination structures and JTE doses were compared with simulation predictions. Electroluminescence at the BV was recorded …

In the United States, there are more than 35, 000 reported suicides with approximately 1, 800 of them being psychiatric inpatients. Staff perform intermittent or continuous observations in order to prevent such tragedies, but a study of 98 articles over time showed that 20% to 62% of suicides happened while inpatients were on an observation schedule. Reducing the instances of suicides of inpatients is a problem of critical importance to both patients and healthcare providers. In this paper, we introduce SHARE - A Self-Harm Activity Recognition Engine, which attempts to infer self-harming activities from sensing accelerometer data using smart devices …

Optimal Selected Phasor Measurement Units For Identifying Multiple Line Outages In Smart Grid, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Prasenjit Shil, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thanks to the advent of clock synchronization via the global positioning system (GPS), phasor measurement units (PMUs) collecting both the magnitude and phase angle with higher precision have implications for monitoring performance across the wide area of smart grids. Owing to high PMUs installation costs, developing optimal strategy of PMUs placement is important to monitor the transmission system status in the wide area. To characterize the performance of line outage identification, this paper firstly proposes the statistical model to describe the average identification capability of multiple line outages. Using this model, we develop a global optimal PMUs placement strategy to …

In August 2014 a conference on “Model reduction across disciplines” was held in Leicester, UK. As a scientific field, model reduction is an important part of mathematical modelling and data analysis with very wide areas of applications. The main scientific goal of the conference was to facilitate interdisciplinary discussion of model reduction and coarse-graining methodologies in order to reveal their general mathematical nature. This time, however, the conference had an additional personal and more profound mission – it was dedicated to the 60th birthday of Professor Alexander Gorban (albeit with some delay) whose fantastic achievements in applying model reduction techniques …

Blended Classes: Expectations Vs. Reality, Susan L. Murray, Julie Phelps, Kelly L. Jones Jun 2015

Blended Classes: Expectations Vs. Reality, Susan L. Murray, Julie Phelps, Kelly L. Jones

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Blended courses, also called hybrid, have a portion of the course taught face-to-face in a classroom, and at least one-third of the course work is online. Some instructors consider this format to be "the best of both worlds." Students receive the personal contact and interaction with the instructor during the classroom portion. They also have flexibility in the pace, access, and repetition of the online content. In this paper, we explore 49 graduate students' expectations for a required operations management course that was delivered in a blended format. The same students were also surveyed at the completion of the course …

Burner, Emitter, And Recuperator Development For Lightweight Thermophotovoltaic Power Supply, Lewis Fraas, Leonid Minkin, J. Avery, Hui She, L. Ferguson, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Like batteries, thermophotovoltaic generators produce DC electricity quietly. TPV uses infrared photovoltaic cells to convert infrared radiation from a combustion heated ceramic IR emitter. However, because the specific energy in a hydrocarbon fuel like propane or butane is 12,900 Wh/kg, much larger than the specific energy of 145 Wh/kg for a Li-ion battery, TPV is very promising as a lightweight DC power supply. A portable cylindrical thermophotovoltaic (TPV) battery replacement concept has been previously described. It consists of a cylindrical TPV receiver assembly using simple diffused junction GaSb IR cells along with a novel omega recuperator and a novel doped …

We present magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements on (Ce1-xLax)Cu2Ge2 single crystals (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). With La substitution, the antiferromagnetic temperature TN is suppressed in an almost linear fashion and moves below 0.36 K, the base temperature of our measurements for x > 0.8. Surprisingly, in addition to robust antiferromagnetism, the system also shows low temperature coherent scattering below Tcoh up to ∼0.9 of La, indicating a small percolation limit ∼9% of Ce. Tcoh as a function of magnetic field was found to have different behavior …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In an attempt to increase the rate of neurite extension from E9 chick embryo dorsal root ganglion (DRG) on electro spun fiber scaffolds we experimented with two drugs that have been used previously to affect neuronal growth. Blebbistatin and paclitaxel were added to DRG cultured on electro spun fibers in an attempt to increase the rate of neurite extension along fibrous scaffolds. Blebbistatin increased the length of neurites extending from the DRG explant in comparison to the drug-free control group. In contrast, paclitaxel completely eliminated all neurite extension from the DRG explant when compared to the control. A third treatment …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We hypothesized that fiber diameter within an electro spun fiber scaffold would affect astrocyte elongation and maturation. To examine the relationship, astrocytes were seeded on 400nm and 800nm diameter electro spun PLLA fibers. Immunohistochemistry was used to monitor cell morphology, and GLT-1 expression over the first 96 hours after seeding. The results indicate that astrocytes extended along the primary axis of the 800nm fibers more rapidly than astrocytes seeded on fibers of half the size. While GLT-1 was expressed diffusely throughout the surface of the astrocytes, elongated cell processes exhibited dense regions of GLT-1. These results show that 800nm fibers …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effect of strontium (Sr) substitution on bioactivity of hydroxyapatite (HA) was investigated. The substitution of Sr2+ for Ca2+ in the HA lattice increases biodegradability of Sr-substituted HA (Sr-HA) and accelerates the formation of apatite crystals on the Sr-HA surface. Moreover, the dissolution products from HA and Sr-HA samples are not cyto-toxic.

Impact Of Modified Inlets On Residence Times In Baffled Tanks, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sharp inlets, although prevalent, tend to reduce mixing efficiency in hydraulic contact tanks by affecting fluid and scalar transport throughout the entire system. Superior inlets are often not an option because of the prohibitive cost of upgrading preexisting tanks. To remedy this, seven inexpensive yet easily implemented attachments to a sharp inlet were tested on a full-scale, baffled, prototypical contact tank. Cumulative residence time distributions of a conservative, passive scalar were obtained for each attachment to assess their performance. A study using computational fluid dynamics of the same tank with the various attachments was then performed to strengthen the empirical …

Multicomponent TeO2-Bi2O3-ZnO (TBZ) glass thin films were prepared using RF magnetron sputtering under different oxygen flow rates. The influences of oxygen flow rate on the structural and optical properties of the resulting thin films were investigated. We observed that thin films sputtered in an oxygen-rich environment are optically transparent while those sputtered in an oxygen-deficient environment exhibit broadband absorption. The structural origin of the optical property variation was studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy which revealed that the presence of under-coordinated Te leads to the observed optical …

Laser-induced electron diffraction is an evolving tabletop method that aims to image ultrafast structural changes in gas-phase polyatomic molecules with sub-Ångström spatial and femtosecond temporal resolutions. Here we demonstrate the retrieval of multiple bond lengths from a polyatomic molecule by simultaneously measuring the C-C and C-H bond lengths in aligned acetylene. Our approach takes the method beyond the hitherto achieved imaging of simple diatomic molecules and is based on the combination of a 160kHz mid-infrared few-cycle laser source with full three-dimensional electron-ion coincidence detection. Our technique provides an accessible and robust route towards imaging ultrafast processes in complex gas-phase molecules …

Statistics concepts are required for undergraduate curricula in electrical engineering and computer engineering (ECE). Accreditation guidelines specify that such instruction must include “applications appropriate to the program name” [ABET Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs, 2014-2015]. Curricula content in probability and statistics are commonly done in a stand-alone course, but additional exposure within engineering-content courses can provide great value. Many basic concepts can be introduced before the comprehensive stand-alone course. A good ECE context is an electrical circuits laboratory in which students need to understand electrical component tolerances and related design issues. Statistics-related assignments in a required, sophomore-level laboratory course are …

Location-based services (LBSs) flood mobile phones nowadays, but their use poses an evident privacy risk. The locations accompanying the LBS queries can be exploited by the LBS provider to build the user profile of visited locations, which might disclose sensitive data, such as work or home locations. The classic concept of entropy is widely used to evaluate privacy in these scenarios, where the information is represented as a sequence of independent samples of categorized data. However, since the LBS queries might be sent very frequently, location profiles can be improved by adding temporal dependencies, thus becoming mobility profiles, where location …
