Customer expectations can be extremely nebulous. This research identifies the demographic segmentations and their respective expectations for the spa market. Interviews were conducted and a subsequent questionnaire was employed to gather the voice of the customer and assess the expectations of spa clientele. All of the data was collected from luxury spas in Hawaii, and consisted of respondents from all over the world. Results of the survey suggest that while men want more tangible benefits of a spa, women prefer the experiential qualities of peace and rejuvenation. Additionally, those of lower to middle income focus on the atmosphere more than …

Biodegradable elastomers have clinical applicability due to their biocompatibility, tunable degradation and elasticity. The addition of bioactive glasses to these elastomers can impart mechanical properties sufficient for hard tissue replacement. Hence, a composite with a biodegradable polymer matrix and a bio glass filler can offer a method of augmenting existing tissue. This article reviews the applications of such composites for skeletal augmentation.

To better understand methamphetamine exposure and risk for occupants of former residential clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, we measured the dynamic accumulation of methamphetamine in skin oil, cotton and polyester (PE) clothing, upholstery, and toy fabric (substrates) exposed to 15-30 ppb (91-183 μg/m3) neutral methamphetamine in air for up to 60 days. The average equilibrium partition coefficients at 30% RH, in units of μg of methamphetamine per gram of substrate per ppb, are 3.0 ± 0.2 for a PE baby blanket, 5.6 ± 3.5 for a PE fabric toy, 3.7 ± 0.2 for a PE shirt, 18.3 ± 8.0 for a PE/cotton …
Seismic-Hazard Map Of Southeast Missouri And Likely Magnitude Of The February 1812 New Madrid Earthquake, Jaewon Chung, J. David Rogers
Seismic-Hazard Map Of Southeast Missouri And Likely Magnitude Of The February 1812 New Madrid Earthquake, Jaewon Chung, J. David Rogers
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The New Madrid seismic zone lies beneath the upper Mississippi Embayment, straddling the border between southeastern Missouri and northwestern Tennessee. In late 1811 and early 1812, it produced five earthquakes of magnitudes >6.5, violently shaking the central and eastern United States (CEUS). Its magnitude and recurrence are of concern to today's central United States regions. By considering the effects of local geology, deterministic scenario maps (Mw 7.3 and 7.7) were produced for ground motions intended to simulate the 7 February 1812 event (NM3), which was the largest felt. These maps include spatial estimates of peak ground acceleration and of …

Vibrational Energy Levels Of The Simplest Criegee Intermediate (Ch₂Oo) From Full-Dimensional Lanczos, Mctdh, And Multimode Calculations, Hua-Gen Yu, Steve Alexandre Ndengué, Jun Li, Richard Dawes, Hua Guo
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Accurate vibrational energy levels of the simplest Criegee intermediate (CH2OO) were determined on a recently developed ab initio based nine-dimensional potential energy surface using three quantum mechanical methods. the first is the iterative Lanczos method using a conventional basis expansion with an exact Hamiltonian. the second and more efficient method is the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method in which the potential energy surface is refit to conform to the sums-of-products requirement of MCTDH. Finally, the energy levels were computed with a vibrational self-consistent field/virtual configuration interaction method in MULTIMODE. the low-lying levels obtained from the three methods are …

We consider a two-dimensional model of double-diffusive convection and its time discretisation using a second-order scheme (based on backward differentiation formula for the time derivative) which treats the non-linear term explicitly. Uniform bounds on the solutions of both the continuous and discrete models are derived (under a timestep restriction for the discrete model), proving the existence of attractors and invariant measures supported on them. as a consequence, the convergence of the attractors and longtime statistical properties of the discrete model to those of the continuous one in the limit of vanishing timestep can be obtained following established methods.

Adaptive Control With Nonlinear Reference Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Benjamin Gruenwald, Jonathan A. Muse, Gerardo De La Torre
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Although reference systems with linear dynamics are common in the adaptive control literature, they can lead to limitations on the achievable closed-loop dynamical system performance. This is due to the fact that linear reference systems can only approximate the desired closed-loop behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems in narrow regions of the state-space. In this paper, we study a new adaptive control architecture for uncertain dynamical systems based on a nonlinear reference system. It is shown that the system error between the uncertain dynamical system and the nonlinear reference system asymptotically vanishes in steady-state, and its performance is guaranteed during the …

Exploitation Of Heterogeneity In Distributed Sensing: An Active-Passive Networked Multiagent Systems Approach, John Daniel Peterson, Tansel Yucelen, Girish Chowdhary, Suresh Kannan

Most distributed sensing methods assume that the expected value of sensed information is same for all agents - ignoring differences in sensor capabilities due to, for example, environmental factors and sensors' quality and condition. In this paper, we present a distributed sensing framework to exploit heterogeneity in information provided about a dynamic environment using an active-passive networked multiagent systems approach. Specifically, this approach consists of agents subject to exogenous inputs (active agents) and agents without any inputs (passive agents). In addition, if an active agent senses a quantity accurately (resp., not accurately), then it is weighted high (resp., low) in …

A challenging problem for adaptive control systems is the accurate characterization of the transient response in the presence of dynamic uncertainties such as a partially known actuator. Considering an actuator modelled as a first order filter with an uncertain control effectiveness and using a projection mechanism for parameters adaptation, we show that the tracking error dynamics behaves as a linear system perturbed by bounded uncertainties. This brings the advantage that the stability analysis can be cast in terms of LMIs so that convex optimization tools can be used for analysis and design. In this framework we propose a mixed linear/adaptive …

Consensus With Reduced Communication Links Via Relative Neighboring Velocity Information, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a consensus protocol is introduced to virtually manipulate the communication topology of a given networked multiagent system - without adding physical edges to the graph. The proposed protocol achieves this objective by utilizing not only neighboring agents' relative position information but also their possibly delayed velocity information. It is shown that the stability of the proposed framework is not dependent on the possible time delay present in the neighboring velocity information. In addition, it is formally proven that utilization of the proposed consensus protocol is equivalent to the addition of virtual communication links in a standard consensus …

A new high quality potential energy surface is calculated at a coupled-cluster single double triple level with an aug-cc-pV5Z basis set for the HCS+-He system. This potential energy surface is used in low energy quantum scattering calculations to provide a set of (de)-excitation cross sections and rate coefficients among the first 20 rotational levels of HCS+ by He in the range of temperature from 5 K to 100 K. The paper discusses the impact of the new ab initio potential energy surface on the cross sections at low energy and provides a comparison with the HCO+ …

Transmission-Line Equivalent And Microstrip Structure For Planar Möbius Loop Resonator, Kirti Dhwaj, Hanseuyng Lee, Lijun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A transmission line model for planar Möbius loop resonator is presented. Theoretical background for the Möbius loop is developed by treating it as a ring resonator. Even-Odd mode analysis is used to account for the dual mode nature of the resonator. Also, the presence of two transmission zeroes is explained using the proposed model. The transmission line model is then used to implement a simple microstrip version of the Möbius loop resonator. A single resonator is then used to implement a dual-mode bandpass filter. Simulation and test results of the structure are presented.

Despite the increasing popularity of the smart home concept, such a technology is vulnerable to various security threats such as pricing cyberattacks. There are some technical advances in developing detection and defense frameworks against those pricing cyberattacks. However, none of them considers the impact of net metering, which allows the customers to sell the excessively generated renewable energy back to the grid. At a superficial glance, net metering seems to be irrelevant to the cybersecurity, while this paper demonstrates that its implication is actually profound. In this paper, we propose to analyze the impact of the net metering technology on …
What You Gotta Know To Play Good In The Iterated Prisoner’S Dilemma, Ethan Akin
What You Gotta Know To Play Good In The Iterated Prisoner’S Dilemma, Ethan Akin
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
For the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma there exist good strategies which solve the problem when we restrict attention to the long-term average payoff. When used by both players, these assure the cooperative payoff for each of them. Neither player can benefit by moving unilaterally to any other strategy, i.e., these provide Nash equilibria. In addition, if a player uses instead an alternative which decreases the opponent's payoff below the cooperative level, then his own payoff is decreased as well. Thus, if we limit attention to the long-term payoff, these strategies effectively stabilize cooperative behavior. The existence of such strategies follows from …

Integrin-mediated cell adhesion to the ECM regulates many physiological processes in part by controlling cell proliferation. It is well established that many normal cells require integrin-mediated adhesion to enter S phase of the cell cycle. Recent evidence indicates that integrins also regulate cytokinesis. Mechanical properties of the ECM can dictate entry into S phase; however, it is not known whether they also can affect the successful completion of cell division. To address this issue, we modulated substrate compliance using fibronectin-coated acrylamide-based hydrogels. Soft and hard substrates were generated with approximate elastic moduli of 1600 and 34,000 Pascals (Pa) respectively. Our …

Advancing Seismic Simulation Of Cold-Formed Steel Framed Buildings, American Iron And Steel Institute
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The objective of this research is to create a computationally efficient seismic analysis framework for cold-formed steel (CFS) framed-buildings supported by hysteretic nonlinear models for CFS members and screw-fastened connections. Design of CFS structures subjected to lateral seismic forces traditionally relies on the strength of subassemblies subjected to lateral loading of systems, such as strapped/sheathed shear walls and diaphragms, to provide adequate protection against collapse. Enabling performance-based seismic design of CFS buildings requires computationally efficient and accurate modeling tools that predict the nonlinear cyclic behavior of CFS buildings, the individual CFS components and connections. Such models should capture the energy …

Healthcare is coming under ever increasing scrutiny for cost, quality, safety, and patient satisfaction. This paper compares two operational models (“rooming the patience” vs. “moving the patient”) against productivity, privacy, user satisfaction, and other performance measurements. Varying risk factors for patient populations ranging from infants to geriatrics and medical specialties from mental health to orthopedics are addressed for both models. In the first operational model after checking-in the patient is escorted to an examination room and waits as various caregivers (nurses, doctors, clerks, etc.) come and go from the exam room. In the second model the caregivers work from a …

Muonic Bound Systems, Virtual Particles, And Proton Radius, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The proton radius puzzle questions the self-consistency of theory and experiment in light muonic and electronic bound systems. Here we summarize the current status of virtual particle models as well as Lorentz-violating models that have been proposed in order to explain the discrepancy. Highly charged one-electron ions and muonic bound systems have been used as probes of the strongest electromagnetic fields achievable in the laboratory. The average electric field seen by a muon orbiting a proton is comparable to hydrogenlike uranium and, notably, larger than the electric field in the most advanced strong-laser facilities. Effective interactions due to virtual annihilation …
Ultrarelativistic Decoupling Transformation For Generalized Dirac Equations, J. H. Noble, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Ultrarelativistic Decoupling Transformation For Generalized Dirac Equations, J. H. Noble, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is known to uncover the nonrelativistic limit of a generalized Dirac Hamiltonian, lending an intuitive physical interpretation to the effective operators within Schrö dinger-Pauli theory. We here discuss the opposite, ultrarelativistic limit which requires the use of a fundamentally different expansion where the leading kinetic term in the Dirac equation is perturbed by the mass of the particle and other interaction (potential) terms, rather than vice versa. The ultrarelativistic decoupling transformation is applied to free Dirac particles (in the Weyl basis) and to high-energy tachyons, which are faster-than-light particles described by a fully Lorentz-covariant equation. The effective …

Soft clays are widely distributed in Missouri, United States. Due to their relatively low strength and high compressibility, subgrade construction in soft clays has encountered many difficulties. In recent practice, the use of fly ash (FA) along with lime to tackle soft subgrade problems has shown promising results. The effectiveness of Class C FA and lime kiln dust (LKD) in clay subgrade stabilization is examined in this research. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, proctor compaction tests, unconfined compression tests, and resilient modulus tests were carried out on the FA and LKD modified soil mixtures. Test specimens were prepared at optimum …

We have studied electron impact ionization of H2 and N2 molecules at intermediate energies to look for possible two center interference effects experimentally and theoretically. Here we report a study of the interference factor I for 250 eV electron-impact ionization. The experimental measurements are performed using a crossed-beam-type electron-electron coincidence spectrometer and theoretical calculations are obtained using the Molecular Three Body Distorted Wave Approximation (M3DW). We found that the I-factor demonstrated strong evidence for two-center interference effects for both H2 and N2. We also found that the I-factor is more sensitive to projectile angular scans …

Mechanisms leading to the initiation and early-stage development of continental rifts remain enigmatic, in spite of numerous studies. Among the various rifting models, which were developed mostly based on studies of mature rifts, far-field stresses originating from plate interactions (passive rifting) and nearby active mantle upwelling (active rifting) are commonly used to explain rift dynamics. Situated atop of the hypothesized African Superplume, the incipient Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) of northern Botswana is ideal to investigate the role of mantle plumes in rift initiation and development, as well as the interaction between the upper and lower mantle. The ORZ developed within …

In this paper, the electromagnetic (EM) features of graphene are characterized by a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm with a resistive boundary condition (RBC). The atomically thick graphene is equivalently modeled using an RBC by regarding the graphene as an infinitesimally thin conductive sheet. To incorporate RBC into the DGTD analysis, the surface conductivity of the graphene composed of contributions from both intraband and interband terms is first approximated by rational basis functions using the fast-relaxation vector-fitting (FRVF) method in the Laplace domain. Next, through the inverse Laplace transform, the corresponding time-domain matrix equations in integral can be obtained. Finally, …
