Recent Advances In Indoor Chemistry, Glenn Morrison
Recent Advances In Indoor Chemistry, Glenn Morrison
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Just as the chemistry creates urban smog and aerosols that influence climate change, chemistry in building air can alter the indoor environment for better or worse. This review focuses on chemical pathways initiated by oxidants that infiltrate from outdoor air and other indoor-sourced reactants and surfaces that make these environments unique chemical reactors. Ozone reacts with fragrance molecules, tobacco smoke residues, and even human skin oils to generate a host of oxidized organic compounds, secondary organic aerosols, and irritants. Nitrous acid is formed on indoor surfaces and is subsequently cleaved by even the relatively dim light indoor. This raises the …

A More Superior Preformed Particle Gel With Potential Application For Conformance Control In Mature Oilfields, Paul Tongwa, Baojun Bai
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The present work presents a nanocomposite preformed particle gel for conformance control in mature oilfields. This product was observed to have a better performance than conventional hydrogels without nanomaterials. Preformed particle hydrogel was designed by the reaction of monomer, initiator, crosslinker, additives, and calcium montmorillonite nanomaterial, whereas conventional hydrogel is designed from just monomer, initiator, crosslinker and additives. The presence of nanomaterial in hydrogel design affords it tremendous improvement in nanocomposite gel properties and behavior compared to conventional hydrogels without any nanomaterial. Additionally, swelling performance, post-degraded gel viscosity, and long-term thermal resistance of nanocomposite gel increased by several orders of …
Electrolytic Recovery Of Bismuth And Copper As A Powder From Acidic Sulfate Effluents Using An Emew® Cell, Wei Jin, Paul I. Laforest, Alex Luyima, Weldon Read, Luis M. Navarro, Michael S. Moats
Electrolytic Recovery Of Bismuth And Copper As A Powder From Acidic Sulfate Effluents Using An Emew® Cell, Wei Jin, Paul I. Laforest, Alex Luyima, Weldon Read, Luis M. Navarro, Michael S. Moats
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Effective removal of bismuth is a primary concern during copper electrorefining. A novel electrowinning process using an emew® cell was developed to recover bismuth and copper from a copper electrorefining waste stream. Significant removal and co-deposition of copper and bismuth were achieved from a highly acidic sulfate industrial effluent using a current density of 350 A m-2, but the current efficiency was low (27%). Operating at a lower current density (75 A m-2) facilitated the preferred removal of Cu, while increasing current efficiency to 67.4% due to the decrease of aside-reaction. Consequently, a two-stage process was …

Evaluation Of Tunnel Excavation Methods In Accordance With Engineering Geology And Rock Mass Classification Systems, Özgür Satici, Tamer Topal
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, the relationship between engineering geological applications and tunnel excavation methods were described. Even if several tunnel excavation methods have been suggested from past up to the present, most of them were only the various derivations of full face and sequential excavation techniques. Internationally well-known tunnel excavation methods try to classify rock mass behaviors but cannot form a numerical base for the claimed methods. Therefore, objective evaluations are required (especially for their applications) to overcome the deficits rock mass classification systems are used. NATM and ADECO-RS are the two widespread methods at the present-day tunnel practice. In both …

Emerging Criticality In The Disordered Three-Color Ashkin-Teller Model, Qiong Zhu, Xin Wan, Rajesh Narayanan, José A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study the effects of quenched disorder on the first-order phase transition in the two-dimensional three-color Ashkin-Teller model by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the first-order phase transition is rounded by the disorder and turns into a continuous one. Using a careful finite-size-scaling analysis, we provide strong evidence for the emerging critical behavior of the disordered Ashkin-Teller model to be in the clean two-dimensional Ising universality class, accompanied by universal logarithmic corrections. This agrees with perturbative renormalization-group predictions by Cardy. As a byproduct, we also provide support for the strong-universality scenario for the critical behavior of …

We have recently reported a theoretical and experimental study of electron-impact ionization of laser-aligned magnesium. Results were presented for both ionization of the ground state, as well as for laser-aligned atoms in the 3p state. For ionization from the 3p state, theoretical results were presented using the distorted wave Born (DWBA) and three-body distorted wave (3DW) approximations. Unfortunately, after publication we learned that the theoretical results were incorrect due to one of the arrays in the computer code dimensioned too small. The figures affected by this error are Figs. 3–5 in the original paper. The present Figs. 3–5 …

Towards A Global Model Of Spin-Orbit Coupling In The Halocarbenes, Silver Nyambo, Cyrus Karshenas, Scott A. Reid, Phalgun Lolur, Richard Dawes
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report a global analysis of spin-orbit coupling in the mono-halocarbenes, CH(D)X, where X = Cl, Br, and I. These are model systems for examining carbene singlet-triplet energy gaps and spin-orbit coupling. Over the past decade, rich data sets collected using single vibronic level emission spectroscopy and stimulated emission pumping spectroscopy have yielded much information on the ground vibrational level structure and clearly demonstrated the presence of perturbations involving the low-lying triplet state. To model these interactions globally, we compare two approaches. First, we employ a diabatic treatment of the spin-orbit coupling, where the coupling matrix elements are written in …

Magnesium (Mg) is a promising candidate to be used in medical products especially as bone tissue engineering scaffolds. The main challenge for using Mg in biomedical applications is its high degradation rate in the body. For this reason, in this study, a multilayer polymeric layer composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin (Gel) reinforced with bioactive glass (BaG) particles has been applied on the surface of Mg scaffolds. The materials characteristics of uncoated Mg scaffold, Mg scaffold coated only with PCL-BaG and Mg scaffold coated with PCL-BaG and Gel-BaG have been analyzed and compared in detail. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped …

Methods And Systems For Biclustering Algorithm, Donald C. Wunsch, Rui Xu, Sejun Kim
Methods And Systems For Biclustering Algorithm, Donald C. Wunsch, Rui Xu, Sejun Kim
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Methods and systems for improved unsupervised learning are described. The unsupervised learning can consist of biclustering a data set, e.g., by biclustering subsets of the entire data set. In an example, the biclustering does not include feeding know and proven results into the biclustering methodology or system. A hierarchical approach can be used that feeds proven clusters back into the biclustering methodology or system as the input. Data that does not cluster may be discarded. Thus, a very large unknown data set can be acted on to learn about the data. The system is also amenable to parallelization.

N-Hydroxylating monooxygenases are involved in the biosynthesis of iron-chelating hydroxamate-containing siderophores that play a role in microbial virulence. These flavoenzymes catalyze the NADPH-and oxygen-dependent hydroxylation of amines such as those found on the side chains of lysine and ornithine. In this work we report the biochemical and structural characterization of Nocardia farcinica Lys monooxygenase (NbtG), which has similar biochemical properties to mycobacterial homologs. NbtG is also active on D-Lys, although it binds L-Lys with a higher affinity. Differently from the ornithine monooxygenases PvdA, SidA, and KtzI, NbtG can use both NADH and NADPH and is highly uncoupled, producing more superoxide …

The characterization of power radiation and coupling has been an important research subject. The partial element equivalent circuit method (PEEC) is a powerful tool in bridging the electromagnetic modeling together with a circuit solver. Even though PEEC was a convenient tool for many quasi-static applications, in this paper, we propose a new approach for PEEC to calculate the radiated and coupled power from the distributive point of view. Formulations for both radiated and transferred powers are proposed based on a full wave PEEC model. Distributive power can be evaluated with negligible additional computational cost in PEEC implementations. The physical meaning …

Full-Wave Simulation Of An Imbalanced Differential Microstrip Line With Conductor Surface Roughness, Marina Koledintseva, Tracey Vincent, Sergiu Radu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigates the full-wave numerical electromagnetic analysis of edge-coupled differential microstrip lines on a printed circuit board (PCB), when conductor surface roughness is taken into account. Mixed mode parameters of such lines are analyzed. The imbalance in the electric lengths of the traces causes the appearance of common-mode currents, as well as mode conversion: differential mode (DM) to common-mode (CM) and CM to DM. The presence of the solder mask on top of the PCB with microstrip traces is also taken into account. The differential lines modeled in this work are of three types: straight, bent, and curved. The …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The acceptance of the cloud as an infrastructure to host applications is a growing trend. Facilitating and hosting applications on the cloud reduces support and maintenance costs. However, concerns about the security of these applications are one of the primary reasons organizations avoid complete adoption of cloud services. Although cloud service providers (CSPs) offer standard security, they don't address security with respect to application's security requirements. This article proposes an offline risk-assessment framework to evaluate the security offered by a CSP from the perspective of an application to be migrated to it. Once the most secure CSP is identified for …

Data Mining has wide applications in many areas such as banking, medicine, scientific research and among government agencies. Classification is one of the commonly used tasks in data mining applications. For the past decade, due to the rise of various privacy issues, many theoretical and practical solutions to the classification problem have been proposed under different security models. However, with the recent popularity of cloud computing, users now have the opportunity to outsource their data, in encrypted form, as well as the data mining tasks to the cloud. Since the data on the cloud is in encrypted form, existing privacy-preserving …

Lack of collaboration between individual systems and systems of systems (SoS) program management is identified as one of the leading problems in SoS acquisition. This is especially a major concern in acknowledged SoS where a designated SoS program management has no authority over the constituent systems. Therefore, it is important to consider mechanisms to persuade individual systems to participate in the SoS development. In SoS where individual systems have their own self-interests, negotiation becomes an important mechanism to increase participation in SoS development. Another mechanism, incentives, is used in a wide range of applications to improve performance and collaboration. In …

Varied cluster analysis were applied to facial surface measurements from 62 prepubertal boys with essential autism to determine whether facial morphology constitutes viable biomarker for delineation of discrete Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) subgroups. Earlier study indicated utility of facial morphology for autism subgrouping (Aldridge et al. in Mol Autism 2(1):15, 2011). Geodesic distances between standardized facial landmarks were measured from three-dimensional stereo-photogrammetric images. Subjects were evaluated for autism-related symptoms, neurologic, cognitive, familial, and phenotypic variants. The most compact cluster is clinically characterized by severe ASD, significant cognitive impairment and language regression. This verifies utility of facially-based ASD subtypes and validates …

Weintroduce a class of critical states which are embedded in the continuum (CSC) of a one-dimensional optical waveguide array with one non-Hermitian defect. These states are on the verge of being fractal and have real propagation constants. They emerge at a phase transition which is driven by the imaginary refractive index of the defective waveguide and it is accompanied by a mode segregation which reveals analogies with the Dicke super-radiance. Below this point the states are extended while above it they evolve to exponentially localized modes. An addition of a background gain or loss can turn these localized states into …

Origin Of Interfacial Polar Order In Incipient Ferroelectrics, Yijia Gu, Nan Wang, Fei Xue, Long-Qing Chen
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
There are ample experimental evidences indicating that the ferroelastic domain walls of incipient ferroelectrics, such as SrTiO3 and CaTiO3, are polar. The emergence of such interfacial polar order at a domain wall is exciting and believed to arise from the coupling between a primary order parameter, such as a strain or an antiferrodistortive (AFD) order parameter, and polarization. There have been several mechanisms proposed to explain the emergence of interfacial polar order, including biquadratic coupling, AFD-antiferroelectric coupling, and flexoelectric coupling. Using CaTiO3 as an example, we demonstrate, using both asymptotic analytics and numerical calculation, that the …

Selective Body Biasing For Post-Silicon Tuning Of Sub-Threshold Designs: An Adaptive Filtering Approach, Hui Geng, Jianming Liu, Pei Wen Luo, Liang Chia Cheng, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A sub-threshold design could provide a compelling approach to power critical applications. An exponential relationship exists, however, between the delay and the threshold voltage, that makes this design-time timing closure extremely difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. Several previous studies were focused on the technique of body biasing during post-silicon tuning for delay compensation. But they were mostly for super-threshold designs where spatially correlated L eff variation dominates. They cannot be applied directly to sub-threshold designs in which purely random threshold voltage variations dominate. These works also assumed multiple body biasing voltage domains and multiple body biasing voltage levels, which …

The first realization of a wavelength-selective switch (WSS) with direct integration of few mode fibers (FMF) is fully described. The freespace optics FMF-WSS dynamically steers spectral information-bearing beams containing three spatial modes from an input port to one of nine output ports using a phase spatial light modulator. Sources of mode dependent losses (MDL) are identified, analytically analyzed and experimentally confirmed on account of different modal sensitivities to fiber coupling in imperfect imaging and at spectral channel edges due to mode clipping. These performance impacting effects can be reduced by adhering to provided design guidelines, which scale in support of …

The mechanism and kinetics of corrosion of BN-ZrO2-SiC (MYCROSINT®SO43) by molten Si-killed steel was studied. Isothermal corrosion tests were performed for duration between 2 and 8 h. Refractory and steel composition and morphology changes were investigated. A kinetic model using process simulation software METSIM and thermochemical software FactSage was developed to understand refractory-steel interactions. The corrosion process showed a deviation from parabolic kinetics and was fitted by a combination of linear and parabolic terms. It was determined that corrosion of the BN-ZrO2-SiC refractory was governed by dissolution of SiC and BN and removal of ZrO2 …

Weak magnetic field (WMF) was employed to improve the removal of Cr(VI) by zero-valent iron (ZVI) for the first time. The removal rate of Cr(VI) was elevated by a factor of 1.12-5.89 due to the application of a WMF, and the WMF-induced improvement was more remarkable at higher Cr(VI) concentration and higher pH. Fe2+ was not detected until Cr(VI) was exhausted, and there was a positive correlation between the WMF-induced promotion factor of Cr(VI) removal rate and that of Fe2+ release rate in the absence of Cr(VI) at pH 4.0-5.5. These phenomena imply that ZVI corrosion with Fe2+ …

The receiver function (RF) technique has been widely applied to investigate crustal and mantle layered structures using P-to-S converted (Ps) phases from velocity discontinuities. However, the presence of low-velocity (relative to that of the bedrock) sediments can give rise to strong reverberations in the resulting RFs, frequently masking the Ps phases from crustal and mantle boundaries. Such reverberations are caused by P-to-S conversions and their multiples associated with the strong impedance contrast across the bottom of the low-velocity sedimentary layer. Here we propose and test an approach to effectively remove the near-surface reverberations and decipher the Ps phases associated with …
