Analyzing Responses From Likert Surveys And Risk-Adjusted Ranking: A Data Analytics Perspective, Abhijit Gosavi Nov 2015

Analyzing Responses From Likert Surveys And Risk-Adjusted Ranking: A Data Analytics Perspective, Abhijit Gosavi

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We broadly consider the topic of ranking entities from surveys/opinions. Often, numerous ranks from different respondents are available for the same entity, e.g., a candidate from a pool, and yet an averaging of those ranks may not serve the purpose of identifying a consensus candidate. We first consider a risk-adjusted paradigm for ranking, where the rank is defined as the average (mean) rank plus a scalar times the risk in the rank; we use standard deviation as a risk metric. In case of a candidate being ranked either on the basis of opinions of a selection committee's members or on …

Determination Of Rule Patterns In Complex Event Processing Using Machine Learning Techniques, Nijat Mehdiyev, Julian Krumeich, David Lee Enke, Dirk Werth, Peter Loos

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a novel and promising methodology that enables the real-time analysis of stream event data. The main purpose of CEP is detection of the complex event patterns from the atomic and semantically low-level events such as sensor, log, or RFID data. Determination of the rule patterns for matching these simple events based on the temporal, semantic, or spatial correlations is the central task of CEP systems. In the current design of the CEP systems, experts provide event rule patterns. Having reached maturity, the Big Data Systems and Internet of Things (IoT) technology require the implementation of …

Influence Of Dynamic Factors On Nonwetting Fluid Snap-Off In Pores, Wen Deng, Matthew Balhoff, M. Bayani Cardenas Nov 2015

Influence Of Dynamic Factors On Nonwetting Fluid Snap-Off In Pores, Wen Deng, Matthew Balhoff, M. Bayani Cardenas

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Snap-off is an important dynamic multiphase flow phenomenon which occurs in porous media. It plays a dominant role in the residual trapping and mobilization/immobilization of nonwetting fluids such as hydrocarbons or CO₂. Current studies, applications, and threshold criteria of snap-off are mostly based on static or equilibrium conditions. Thus, the dynamics of snap-off which is relevant for many real world applications has rarely been systematically studied. While a static criterion indicates the snap-off potential for nonwetting fluids, the competition between the time required for snap-off and the local pore throat capillary number determines whether snap-off actually occurs. Using a theoretical …

Efficient Aerial Data Collection With Uav In Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Networks, Chengliang Wang, Fei Ma, Junhui Yan, Debraj De, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Data collection from deployed sensor networks can be with static sink, ground-based mobile sink, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based mobile aerial data collector. Considering the large-scale sensor networks and peculiarity of the deployed environments, aerial data collection based on controllable UAV has more advantages. In this paper, we have designed a basic framework for aerial data collection, which includes the following five components: deployment of networks, nodes positioning, anchor points searching, fast path planning for UAV, and data collection from network. We have identified the key challenges in each of them and have proposed efficient solutions. This includes proposal …

Bounds On Large Extra Dimensions From The Simulation Of Black Hole Events At The Lhc, Shaoqi Hou, Benjamin Harms, Marco Cavaglia Nov 2015

Bounds On Large Extra Dimensions From The Simulation Of Black Hole Events At The Lhc, Shaoqi Hou, Benjamin Harms, Marco Cavaglia

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

If large extra dimensions exist, the Planck scale may be as low as a TeV and microscopic black holes may be produced in high-energy particle collisions at this energy scale. We simulate microscopic black hole formation at the Large Hadron Collider and compare the simulation results with recent experimental data by the Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration. The absence of observed black hole events in the experimental data allows us to set lower bounds on the Planck scale and various parameters related to microscopic black hole formation for a number (3 − 6) of extra dimensions. Our analysis sets lower bounds …

Benchmark Problems For Large Strain Consolidation, Patrick J. Fox, Hefu Pu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modeling of the one-dimensional consolidation process for soil and other compressible porous media is important for a variety of engineering applications. This paper presents solutions for two benchmark problems for large strain consolidation of a saturated soil layer that can be used to check other analytical and numerical analysis methods. The solutions include effects of vertical strain, soil self-weight, nonlinear constitutive relationships, and changing material properties during the consolidation process. High-accuracy data are presented for each problem and include changes of settlement, void ratio, and excess pore pressure with time.

Experimental Study And Numerical Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing Tight Sandstone Reservoirs, Chaohua Guo, Jianchun Xu, Mingzhen Wei, Ruizhong Jiang Nov 2015

Experimental Study And Numerical Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing Tight Sandstone Reservoirs, Chaohua Guo, Jianchun Xu, Mingzhen Wei, Ruizhong Jiang

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unconventional tight sandstone reservoirs have been developed during recent years and a large number of multi-stages fractured horizontal wells have been drilled to stimulate reservoir performance. However, fluid flow in low permeability porous media no longer obeys Darcy's law and instead conforms to low-velocity non-Darcy flow. Most commercial numerical simulation software for multi-stage fractured horizontal well development may cause inaccuracy in simulating performance of tight sandstone reservoirs. In this paper, the investigation of existing conditions of low velocity non-Darcy flow for oil flow in irreducible water saturation tight sandstone cores was conducted and discussed through lab-experiments. And existence of low …

Radial Strain Behaviors And Stress State Interpretation Of Soil Under Direct Simple Shear, Xin Kang, Yao Cheng, Louis Ge Nov 2015

Radial Strain Behaviors And Stress State Interpretation Of Soil Under Direct Simple Shear, Xin Kang, Yao Cheng, Louis Ge

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Radial strain behaviors and stress state interpretation methods of silica sand consolidated at different K0 values under modified direct simple shear were investigated in this research. Consolidated drained triaxial compression test, direct shear box test, and wire reinforced direct simple shear tests were conducted, and the test results were compared and linked with the modified direct simple shear tests. Based on the observed testing data, simple shear specimens with constant lateral stress exhibited relatively small radial strain during shear, especially under small shear strains. After the peak shear resistance has mobilized, radial strain increased rigorously until the specimen failed. Confining …

A Comparison Of The Bond Behavior Of Pbo-Frcm Composites Determined By Double-Lap And Single-Lap Shear Tests, Lesley Sneed, T. D'Antino, C. Carloni, C. Pellegrino

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the results of an investigation on the bond behavior and stress-transfer mechanism of polyparaphenylene benzo isoxazole (PBO) fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites bonded to a concrete substrate using double-lap and single-lap shear tests. Results of double-lap shear tests with different composite bonded lengths and widths are presented and compared with those from single-lap shear tests previously reported by the authors. The idealized load response developed from single-lap shear tests is found to characterize the response of the composite in double-lap shear tests, although with a few key differences. With the double-lap shear test, load redistribution among the …

Real-Time Supervised Detection Of Pink Areas In Dermoscopic Images Of Melanoma: Importance Of Color Shades, Texture And Location, Ravneet Kaur, P. P. Albano, Justin G. Cole, Jason R. Hagerty, Robert W. Leander, Randy Hays Moss, William V. Stoecker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background/Purpose: Early detection of malignant melanoma is an important public health challenge. In the USA, dermatologists are seeing more melanomas at an early stage, before classic melanoma features have become apparent. Pink color is a feature of these early melanomas. If rapid and accurate automatic detection of pink color in these melanomas could be accomplished, there could be significant public health benefits.

Methods: Detection of three shades of pink (light pink, dark pink, and orange pink) was accomplished using color analysis techniques in five color planes (red, green, blue, hue, and saturation). Color shade analysis was performed using a logistic …

Stable Isotope-Enabled Pathway Elucidation Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole Metabolized By Rhizobium Lichtii, Hunter W. Schroer, Kathryn L. Langenfeld, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently developed military explosives are safer to handle, but more environmentally mobile, than traditional explosives. The new insensitive munitions, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), have been sparsely studied, making the use of bacterial and/or plant-based remediation approaches unfeasible without further information about the transformation of these compounds. To that end, Rhizobium lichtii isolated from willow tree tissues were studied and observed to completely degrade 5 mg L-1 DNAN within 24 h in liquid media with added carbon and nitrogen. The use of DNAN, [13C6] DNAN, and [15N2] DNAN enabled the identification of 11 previously unknown metabolites resulting from sulfation, acetylation, and/or methylation …

A Supercell Based Dual Beam Dielectric Grating Antenna For 60 Ghz Application, Zi Long Ma, Chi Hou Chan, Kung Bo Ng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A dual-beam dielectric grating antenna based on the supercell (SC) concept is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis shows that with the perturbations of different unit cells (UC), two space harmonic modes (m = -1 and m = -2) are excited (above the air line) in the dispersion diagram of the supercell in a certain frequency range. This phenomenon leads to the generation of two radiation beams in the far-field region. At the operating frequency where the phase constants β-1 =β in symmetric directions. In addition, a symmetric SC is proposed and carefully designed to achieve equal performance (beam width …

Electromagnetic Characterization For Graphene By The Peec Method, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2015

Electromagnetic Characterization For Graphene By The Peec Method, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electromagnetic (EM) features of graphene are characterized by the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for the first time with an impedance boundary condition. By incorporating the impedance boundary condition into the PEEC model, a novel surface conductivity circuit is proposed for graphene. Furthermore, the definition of the absorption cross section (σabs) and the scattering cross section (σsca) are revisited to make them feasible for PEEC analysis. The application of the impedance boundary condition significantly alleviates the memory consumption and the CPU time. To validate the proposed algorithm, numerical examples are presented and compared with existing references.

Hierarchical Equivalent Source Algorithm Based On Relaxed Spherical Equivalence Surface, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hong Tat Ewe Oct 2015

Hierarchical Equivalent Source Algorithm Based On Relaxed Spherical Equivalence Surface, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hong Tat Ewe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new hierarchical algorithm based on surface equivalence principle is proposed in this work. The equivalent sources residing on relaxed spherical equivalence surfaces are computed by closed-form integral operators rather than numerical approximations. Consequently, a hierarchical algorithm based on oct-tree is straightforward to implement. Numerical examples validate the accuracy and capability of the proposed algorithm.

Calculating The Scattered Fields From The Fock Currents Of The 3-D Convex Scatterers By The Incremental Length Diffraction Technique, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Tie Jun Cui, Ya Qiu Jin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2015

Calculating The Scattered Fields From The Fock Currents Of The 3-D Convex Scatterers By The Incremental Length Diffraction Technique, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Tie Jun Cui, Ya Qiu Jin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we consider the accuracy improvement of the high frequency scattered fields from the 3-D convex scatterers with the aid of the Fock current and the incremental length diffraction coefficient (ILDC) technique. To efficiently calculate the Fock currents, we adopt the numerical contour deformation method. Then, by using the Fock currents and the ILDC technique, high frequency scattered fields are clearly formulated. Compared to the PO scattered fields from the 3-D convex sphere, numerical results demonstrate significant accuracy enhancement of the scattered field via the Fock current.

Rans Modeling Of Stably Stratified Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows In Openfoam®, Jordan M. Wilson, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quantifying mixing processes relating to the transport of heat, momentum, and scalar quantities of stably stratified turbulent geophysical flows remains a substantial task. In a stably stratified flow, such as the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL), buoyancy forces have a significant impact on the flow characteristics. This study investigates constant and stability-dependent turbulent Prandtl number (Prt) formulations linking the turbulent viscosity (νt) and diffusivity (κt) for modeling applications of boundary layer flows. Numerical simulations of plane Couette flow and pressure-driven channel flow are performed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) framework with the standard k-ϵ turbulence model. Results are compared with …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The role of proton-assisted charge accommodation in electron capture by a heterocyclic electron scavenger is investigated through theoretical analysis of the vibrational spectra of cold, gas phase [Py·(H2O) n=3-5]- clusters. These radical anions are formed when an excess electron is attached to water clusters containing a single pyridine (Py) molecule in a supersonic jet ion source. Under these conditions, the cluster ion distribution starts promptly at n = 3, and the photoelectron spectra, combined with vibrational predissociation spectra of the Ar-tagged anions, establish that for n > 3, these species are best described as hydrated hydroxide ions …

Hartogs-Type Extension For Tube-Like Domains In C², Al Boggess, Roman Dwilewicz, Zbigniew Slodkowski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we consider the Hartogs-type extension problem for unbounded domains in C2. An easy necessary condition for a domain to be of Hartogs-type is that there is not a closed (in C2) complex variety of codimension one in the domain which is given by a holomorphic function smooth up to the boundary. The question is, how far this necessary condition is from the sufficient one? To show how complicated this question is, we give a class of tube-like domains which contain a complex line in the boundary which are either of Hartogs-type or not, …

Effects Of Magnetic Fields On Magnetohydrodynamic Cylindrical And Spherical Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability, Wouter Mostert, Vincent Wheatley, Ravi Samtaney, Dale I. Pullin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of seed magnetic fields on the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability driven by converging cylindrical and spherical implosions in ideal magnetohydrodynamics are investigated. Two different seed field configurations at various strengths are applied over a cylindrical or spherical density interface which has a single-dominant-mode perturbation. The shocks that excite the instability are generated with appropriate Riemann problems in a numerical formulation and the effect of the seed field on the growth rate and symmetry of the perturbations on the density interface is examined. We find reduced perturbation growth for both field configurations and all tested strengths. The extent of growth suppression …

Coalescence-Induced Jumping Of Nanoscale Droplets On Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces, Zhi Liang, Pawel Keblinski

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Coalescence-Induced Jumping of Tens of Microns Size Droplets on Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces Has Been Observed in Both Experiments and Simulations. However, Whether the Coalescence-Induced Jumping Would Occur for Smaller, Particularly Nanoscale Droplets, is an Open Question. using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, We Demonstrate that in Spite of the Large Internal Viscous Dissipation, Coalescence of Two Nanoscale Droplets on a Super-Hydrophobic Surface Can Result in a Jumping of the Coalesced Droplet from the Surface with a Speed of a Few M/s. Similar to the Coalescence-Induced Jumping of Microscale Droplets, We Observe that the Bridge between the Coalescing Nano-Droplets Expands and Impacts the …
