Enhanced Series-Parallel Model For Estimating The Time-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Fly Ash Soil Mixtures, Xin Kang, Louis Ge
Enhanced Series-Parallel Model For Estimating The Time-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Fly Ash Soil Mixtures, Xin Kang, Louis Ge
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An enhanced series-parallel (S-II) model of one-dimensional conductive heat flow through a unit cell was developed to estimate the time-dependent thermal conductivity of Class C fly ash stabilized soils. The unit cell is composed of three separate heat flow paths: a continuous path through solid contacts (soil contacts, fly ash contacts, and soil fly ash contacts) in parallel arrangement, a series-parallel path of solids in a series arrangement with a parallel arranged path of solid-miniscule pores (miniscule portion of solid water and miniscule portion of solid air), and a continuous path through water and air in parallel arrangement. The solid-miniscule …

Imaging the transient process of molecules has been a basic way to investigate photochemical reactions and dynamics. Based on laser-induced electron diffraction and partial one-dimensional molecular alignment, here we provide two effective methods for reconstructing two-dimensional structure of polyatomic molecules. We demonstrate that electron diffraction images in both scattering angles and broadband energy can be utilized to retrieve complementary structure information, including positions of light atoms. With picometre spatial resolution and the inherent femtosecond temporal resolution of lasers, laser-induced electron diffraction method offers significant opportunities for probing atomic motion in a large molecule in a typical pump-probe measurement.

Concrete-Filled-Large Deformable Frp Tubular Columns Under Axial Compressive Loading, Omar I. Abdelkarim, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The behavior of concrete-filled fiber tubes (CFFT) polymers under axial compressive loading was investigated. Unlike the traditional fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) such as carbon, glass, aramid, etc., the FRP tubes in this study were designed using large rupture strains FRP which are made of recycled materials such as plastic bottles; hence, large rupture strain (LRS) FRP composites are environmentally friendly and can be used in the context of green construction. This study performed finite element (FE) analysis using LS-DYNA software to conduct an extensive parametric study on CFFT. The effects of the FRP confinement ratio, the unconfined concrete compressive strength …

Rifting incorporates the fundamental processes concerning the breakup of continental lithosphere and plays a significant role in the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins. In order to decipher the characteristics of rifting at its earliest stage, we conduct the first teleseismic crustal study of one of the world's youngest continental rifts, the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ), where the magma has not yet breached the surface. Results from receiver function stacking and gravity modeling indicate that the crust/mantle boundary beneath the ORZ is uplifted by 4-5 km, and the initiation of the ORZ is closely related to lithospheric stretching. Possible decompression …

Modeling Of Magnetized Graphene From Microwave To Thz Range By Dgtd With A Scalar Rbc And An Ade, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a discontinuous Galerkin timedomain (DGTD) method for the transient analysis of magnetized graphene from the microwave to terahertz (THz) frequencies. By considering the atom thick graphene layer as an infinitely thin conductive sheet with finite surface conductivity, a frequency-dependent anisotropic resistive boundary condition (RBC) is obtained. Based on this RBC, the direct volumetric discretization of graphene layer is avoided. Instead of directly deriving the numerical flux for DGTD considering the presence of this anisotropic and dispersive RBC, an auxiliary surface polarization current governed by a first-order time-dependent partial differential equation (PDE) is introduced over the graphene with …
Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation Using Voltage And Current Feedback, Pratik Shah, Ian Lewis, Steven Grant, Sylvain Angrignon
Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation Using Voltage And Current Feedback, Pratik Shah, Ian Lewis, Steven Grant, Sylvain Angrignon
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) is a well-studied problem. The underlying assumption in most echo cancellation solutions is that the echo path following the reference signal is completely linear. However, in many handheld devices, the echo path following the reference signal is nonlinear. The reason for this nonlinearity in the echo path is the use of smaller inexpensive loudspeakers and the desire for generating high sound pressure levels. This brings about the need for a nonlinear echo canceler to maintain the required echo return loss enhancement (ERLE). Many software-based solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, but the computational complexity …

We have recently examined electron-impact ionization of molecules that have one large atom at the center, surrounded by H nuclei (H2O, NH3, CH4). All of these molecules have ten electrons; however, they vary in their molecular symmetry. We found that the triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs) for the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) were similar, as was the character of the HOMO orbitals which had a p-type "peanut" shape. In this work, we examine ethane (C2H6) which is a molecule that has two large atoms surrounded by H nuclei, so that …

The Bulk Thermal Conductivity of Stillinger-Weber (SW) Wurtzite GaN in the [0001] Direction at a Temperature of 300 K is Calculated using Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (EMD), Non-Equilibrium MD (NEMD), and Lattice Dynamics (LD) Methods. While the NEMD Method Predicts a Thermal Conductivity of 166 ± 11 W/m·K, Both the EMD and LD Methods Predict Thermal Conductivities that Are an Order of Magnitude Greater. We Attribute the Discrepancy to Significant Contributions to Thermal Conductivity from Long-Mean Free Path Phonons. We Propose that the Grüneisen Parameter for Low-Frequency Phonons is a Good Predictor of the Severity of the Size Effects in NEMD …
Wiretap Channel Ii With A Noisy Main Channel, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Wiretap Channel Ii With A Noisy Main Channel, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a wiretap channel where the transmitter and receiver communicate through a discrete memoryless channel, and the eavesdropper (Eve) has perfect access to a fixed fraction of transmitted symbols (of its choosing) is considered. An outer bound for the rate-equivocation region of the channel, for all such fractions, is derived. An achievable scheme, which provides an inner bound for the rate-equivocation region, is proposed. The achievability is established by defining a class of good codebooks for which there exists a good partition that achieves the required level of equivocation no matter what subset of symbols Eve chooses. It …

Dry eye is a common disorder caused by inadequate hydration of the ocular surface that results in disruption of barrier function. The homeostatic protein clusterin (CLU) is prominent at fluid-tissue interfaces throughout the body. CLU levels are reduced at the ocular surface in human inflammatory disorders that manifest as severe dry eye, as well as in a preclinical mouse model for desiccating stress that mimics dry eye. Using this mouse model, we show here that CLU prevents and ameliorates ocular surface barrier disruption by a remarkable sealing mechanism dependent on attainment of a critical all-or-none concentration. When the CLU level …

High-Frequency Electromagnetic Purification Of Silicon, Lucas Nana Wiredu Damoah, Lifeng Zhang
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effect of a high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) field on the removal of nonmetallic inclusions from molten silicon was experimentally investigated. Inclusion separation efficiencies of up to 99 pct were reached. The separation efficiency was independent of the particle concentration in the melt and increased significantly with increases in the frequency, separation time, and coil current. Particles were separated from the silicon matrix and relocated to the top, bottom, and side walls of the crucible due to the effect of three mechanisms: induced secondary fluid flow which carried particles from the bulk of the melt; EM body force which worked in …

Although recognized as a significant force in crystal engineering, halogen bonding (XB) has been scarcely investigated in "bottom-up" approaches towards organic electronics. We report, herein, the use of a thiophene-based building block, pyridyl-thiophene (Pyr-T), to achieve an assembly driven by XB and π-π stacking interactions with iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB). Spectroscopic and thermal analysis of the co-crystal provide indirect evidence of the assembly. The combined effects of XB and π-π stacking are confirmed experimentally via X-ray crystallography. Density functional theory (DFT) computations support experimental observations. The results of the study speak to the use of halogen bond driven self-assembly in organic electronic …

Constitutive Activity Among Orphan Class-A G Protein Coupled Receptors, Adam L. Martin, Michael A. Steurer, Robert Aronstam
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent of constitutive activity among orphan class-A G protein coupled receptors within the cAMP signaling pathway. Constitutive signaling was revealed by changes in gene expression under control of the cAMP response element. Gene expression was measured in Chinese hamster ovary cells transiently cotransfected with plasmids containing a luciferase reporter and orphan receptor. Criteria adopted for defining constitutive activation were: 1) 200% elevation over baseline reporter gene expression; 2) 40% inhibition of baseline expression; and 3) 40% inhibition of expression stimulated by 3 μM forskolin. Five patterns of activity were noted: 1) …

On The Feasibility Of Leveraging Smartphone Accelerometers To Detect Explosion Events, Srinivas Chakravarthi Thandu, Pratool Bharti, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of leveraging the accelerometer in modern smartphones to detect the triggering of explosion events. By emplacing a static smartphone and a state-of-the-art seismometer in the vicinity of real explosion blasts (conducted at an Explosives Research Lab in a university setting), and comparing their detected event readings, we make several insightful contributions. We find that readings from events in the smartphone and the seismometer are highly correlated in the temporal and frequency domain. We then demonstrate the feasibility of designing an algorithm in the smartphone (executing as an app) to detect the triggering of …
A Risk Assessment Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks In A Sensor Cloud, Amartya Sen, Sanjay Madria
A Risk Assessment Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks In A Sensor Cloud, Amartya Sen, Sanjay Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
A Sensor cloud framework is composed of various heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (WSNs) integrated with the cloud platform. Integration with the cloud platform, in addition to the inherent resource and power constrained nature of the sensor nodes makes these WSNs belonging to a sensor cloud susceptible to security attacks. As such there is a need to formulate effective and efficient security measures for such an environment. But in doing so, requires an understanding of the likelihood and impact of different attacks feasible on the WSNs. In this paper, we propose a risk assessment framework for the WSNs belonging to a …

Using Simulation & Joint Time/Frequency Domain Analysis To Evaluate Absorber/Lossy Material Performance In Resonant Cavities, Bruce Archambeault, Michael Varner, Jiawei Zhang, Sam Connor, Edward Wheeler
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Comparing the effectiveness of different absorber/lossy materials as a function of frequency can be difficult and prone to misunderstanding when the reduction in field strength is observed directly. Often these materials are used in highly resonant cavities, therefore a better measure of the reduction of field strength is the resonant quality factor (Q-factor). The Joint Time-Frequency domain analysis technique allows simulation data from time domain simulations to be easily converted to Q-factor and allows quick and straightforward analysis of the improvement gained by using various absorber/lossy materials. Measurements are made to validate the simulation results.

Network Coding And Coding-Aware Scheduling For Multicast In Wireless Networks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng, Robert F. Erbacher
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Network coding is a network layer technique to 06mprove transmission efficiency. Coding packets is especially ben07ficial in a wireless environment where the dem08nd for radio spectrum is high. However, to fully rea09ize the benefits of network coding two challenging iss10es that must be addressed are: (1) Guaranteeing sep11ration of coded packets at the destination, and (2) Mit12gating the extra coding/decoding delay. If the destination has13all the needed packets to decode a coded pac14et, then separation failure can be averted. If the sch15duling algorithm considers the arrival time of coding pai16s, then the extra delay can be mitigated. In this paper, …

Secure Massive Mimo Transmission In The Presence Of An Active Eavesdropper, Yongpeng Wu, Robert Schober, Derrick Wing Kwan Ng, Chengshan Xiao, Giuseppe Caire
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate secure and reliable transmission strategies for multi-cell multi-user massive multiple input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in the presence of an active eavesdropper. We consider a time-division duplex system where uplink training is required, and an active eavesdropper can attack the training phase to cause pilot contamination at the transmitter. This forces the precoder used in the subsequent downlink transmission phase to implicitly beamform towards the eavesdropper, thus increasing its received signal power. We derive an asymptotic achievable secrecy rate for matched filter precoding and artificial noise (AN) generation at the transmitter when the number of transmit …

Secure Degrees Of Freedom Of N ×N ×M Wiretap Channel With A K-Antenna Cooperative Jammer, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) of a multiantenna Gaussian wiretap channel with N antennas at the transmitter and receiver and an arbitrary number of antennas, M, at the wiretapper is characterized when a multiantenna cooperative jammer (CJ) is available as a helper. This generalizes our previous result that assumed the same number of antennas at the eavesdropper as the legitimate parties. In particular, for arbitrary values of N and M, the s.d.o.f. is derived for all possible values of the number of antennae at the CJ, K. The achievability is based on a variety of signaling, beamforming, and alignment …

A Free Deterministic Equivalent For The Capacity Of Mimo Mac With Distributed Antenna Sets, An An Lu, Xiqi Gao, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we propose a free deterministic equivalent for the capacity analysis of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with distributed antenna sets. In the analysis, we use the operator-valued free probability framework, which is much more straightforward than the widely used methods, i.e., the Bai and Silverstein method and the Gaussian method. By replacing independent random Gaussian variables with freely independent circular entries, we obtain the free deterministic equivalent of our channel model. To evaluate the capacity, we use the Shannon transform of the free deterministic equivalent to approximate that of the channel model. The free deterministic …
