Strategic Generation Bidding Using A Learning Algorithm Through Updates Of Supply Offer Selection Propensities, Sriram Raghavan, Jhi Young Joo Nov 2015

Strategic Generation Bidding Using A Learning Algorithm Through Updates Of Supply Offer Selection Propensities, Sriram Raghavan, Jhi Young Joo

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a novel bidding strategy of a generation company (genco) in an hourly day-Ahead market. In the proposed method, a genco learns the returns of supply offers and adapts its strategy, accordingly, based on the Variant Roth-Erev (VRE) reinforcement learning algorithm. Every supply offer submitted to the market receives a profit at the end of each day and is strategically updated for the next day based on this profit. The novelty of our proposed method is that every supply offer has a propensity (an inclination or a tendency) to be selected associated with it. The propensity is updated …

Evaluation Of Non-Volatile Particulate Matter Emission Characteristics Of An Aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit With Varying Alternative Jet Fuel Blend Ratios, Prem Lobo, Simon Christie, Bhupendra Khandelwal, Simon G. Blakey, David W. Raper Nov 2015

Evaluation Of Non-Volatile Particulate Matter Emission Characteristics Of An Aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit With Varying Alternative Jet Fuel Blend Ratios, Prem Lobo, Simon Christie, Bhupendra Khandelwal, Simon G. Blakey, David W. Raper

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The aviation industry is increasingly focused on the development of sustainable alternative fuels to augment and diversify fuel supplies while simultaneously reducing its environmental impact. The impact of airport operations on local air quality and aviation-related greenhouse gas emissions on a life cycle basis have been shown to be reduced with the use of alternative fuels. However, the evaluation of incremental variations in fuel composition of a single alternative fuel on the production of non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) emissions has not been explored. This is critical to understanding the emission profile for aircraft engines burning alternative fuels and the impact …

Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant Nov 2015

Block Sparse Memory Improved Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithm, J. Liu, S. L. Grant

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A block sparse memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (BS-MIP-APSA) is proposed for block sparse system identification under impulsive noise. The new BS-MIP-APSA not only inherits the performance improvement for block-sparse system identification, but also achieves robustness to impulsive noise and the efficiency of the memory improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (MIP-APSA). Simulations indicate that it can provide both faster convergence rate and better tracking ability under impulsive interference for block sparse system identification as compared with APSA and MIP-APSA.

Manipulating Electromagnetic Local Density Of States By Graphene Plasmonics, Yongpin P. Chen, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jun Hu Nov 2015

Manipulating Electromagnetic Local Density Of States By Graphene Plasmonics, Yongpin P. Chen, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jun Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic local density of states (ELDOS) counts the number of electromagnetic modes at a spatial point where a particle (atom, molecule, and quantum dot) spontaneously emits electromagnetic waves. ELDOS can be interpreted as a density of vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields. Moreover, ELDOS is essential to control spontaneous decay rate (SDR) of particles; and thus plays a critical role in modern optical and quantum devices. Having a great degree of freedom to tune permittivity, graphene is an emerging building block to manipulate the ELDOS. In this work, we study SDR of a particle near a metallic split-ring resonator, which is …

An Affective Tool To Assist In Designing Innovations, Rohan Lulham, Clementine Thurgood, Daniel Burton Shank Nov 2015

An Affective Tool To Assist In Designing Innovations, Rohan Lulham, Clementine Thurgood, Daniel Burton Shank

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

While cognitive models of the design process have long dominated, many design innovation approaches advocate the importance of exploring affective concepts such as emotion, meaning and lived experiences in the creation of innovations. We suggest the capacity to think abstractly – to question, make connections and broaden understanding based on affect and meaning – is a fundamental skill for the abductive problem solving characteristic of expert designers. There are, however, few tools to promote questioning and reflection based on affect within the design innovation process. We see a need for such tools in design innovation workshops, particularly for non-designers who …

Library Assessment And Data Analytics In The Big Data Era: Practice And Policies, Hsin-Liang Chen, Philip Doty, Carol Mollman, Xi Niu, Jen-Chien Yu, Tao Zhang

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

Emerging technologies have offered libraries and librarians new ways and methods to collect and analyze data in the era of accountability to justify their value and contributions. For example, Gallagher, Bauer and Dollar (2005) analyzed the paper and online journal usage from all possible data sources and discovered that users at the Yale Medical Library preferred the electronic format of articles to the print version. After this discovery, they were able to take necessary steps to adjust their journal subscriptions. Many library professionals advocate such data-driven library management to strengthen and specify library budget proposals.

An Electrodeposited Inhomogeneous Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor Junction For Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation, James C. Hill, Alan T. Landers, Jay A. Switzer Nov 2015

An Electrodeposited Inhomogeneous Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor Junction For Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation, James C. Hill, Alan T. Landers, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The photoelectrochemical splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen requires a semiconductor to absorb light and generate electron-hole pairs, and a catalyst to enhance the kinetics of electron transfer between the semiconductor and solution. A crucial question is how this catalyst affects the band bending in the semiconductor, and, therefore, the photovoltage of the cell. We introduce a simple and inexpensive electrodeposition method to produce an efficient n-Si/SiOx/Co/CoOOH photoanode for the photoelectrochemical oxidation of water to oxygen. The photoanode functions as a solid-state, metal-insulator-semiconductor photovoltaic cell with spatially non-uniform barrier heights in series with a low overpotential water-splitting electrochemical cell. …

Noise Canceling In Volatility Forecasting Using An Adaptive Neural Network Filter, Soheil Almasi Monfared, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Volatility forecasting models are becoming more accurate, but noise looks to be an inseparable part of these forecasts. Nonetheless, using adaptive filters to cancel the noise should help improve the performance of the forecasting models. Adaptive filters have the advantage of changing based on the environment. This feature is vital when they are used along with a model for volatility forecasting and error cancellation in the financial markets. Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) neural networks have simple structures, but they are efficient tools in error cancelation systems when working with non-stationary and random walk noise processes. For this research, an adaptive threshold …

Optimizing Macd Parameters Via Genetic Algorithms For Soybean Futures, Phoebe S. Wiles, David Lee Enke Nov 2015

Optimizing Macd Parameters Via Genetic Algorithms For Soybean Futures, Phoebe S. Wiles, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To create profits, traders must time the market correctly and enter and exit positions at ideal times. Finding the optimal time to enter the market can be quite daunting. The soybean market can be volatile and complex. Weather, sentiment, supply, and demand can all affect the price of soybeans. Traders typically use either fundamental analysis or technical analysis to predict the market for soybean futures' contracts. Every agricultural future's contract or security contract is different in its nature, volatility, and structure. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to optimize the moving average convergence divergence parameter values from traditionally used …

Selecting Attributes, Rules, And Membership Functions For Fuzzy Sos Architecture Evaluation, Louis Pape, Siddhartha Agarwal, Cihan H. Dagli Nov 2015

Selecting Attributes, Rules, And Membership Functions For Fuzzy Sos Architecture Evaluation, Louis Pape, Siddhartha Agarwal, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of the FILA-SoS meta-architecture approach to acknowledged systems of systems (SoS) analysis allows a relatively unbiased method for exploring a potential SoS architecture space. This paper delves more deeply into the process of building the lists of desirable fuzzy attributes of a SoS, developing rules for combining attribute values to an overall assessment, and discovering membership function shapes that work well. A wide range of options exist for all the individual elements of SoS assessment. Some recommendations for finding an appropriate combination for the adjustable parameters of fuzzy assessment models through random architecture chromosome testing and iteration are …

Infinite-Noise Criticality: Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions In Fluctuating Environments, Thomas Vojta, José A. Hoyos Nov 2015

Infinite-Noise Criticality: Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions In Fluctuating Environments, Thomas Vojta, José A. Hoyos

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the effects of time-varying environmental noise on nonequilibrium phase transitions in spreading and growth processes. Using the examples of the logistic evolution equation as well as the contact process, we show that such temporal disorder gives rise to a distinct type of critical points at which the effective noise amplitude diverges on long time scales. This leads to enormous density fluctuations characterized by an infinitely broad probability distribution at criticality. We develop a real-time renormalization-group theory that provides a general framework for the effects of temporal disorder on nonequilibrium processes. We also discuss how general this exotic critical …

Using Geometry To Manipulate Long-Range Correlation Of Light Inside Disordered Media, Raktim Sarma, Alexey Yamilov, Pauf Neupane, Hui Cao Nov 2015

Using Geometry To Manipulate Long-Range Correlation Of Light Inside Disordered Media, Raktim Sarma, Alexey Yamilov, Pauf Neupane, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We demonstrate an effective approach of modifying the long-range spatial correlation for light propagating inside random photonic waveguides by varying the shape of the waveguide. The functional form of spatial correlation is no longer universal in the regime of diffusive transport and becomes shape dependent due to the nonlocal nature of wave propagation. The spatial dependence of the correlation may become asymmetric for light incident from opposite ends of the waveguide. This work opens the door to control nonlocal effects in mesoscopic transport of waves by tailoring the geometry of random systems. .

Evolution Of The Statistical Distribution In A Topological Defect Network, Fei Xue, Xueyun Wang, Ion Socolenco, Yijia Gu, Longqing Chen, Sang-Wook Cheong

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The complex networks of numerous topological defects in hexagonal manganites are highly relevant to vastly different phenomena from the birth of our cosmos to superfluidity transition. The topological defects in hexagonal manganites form two types of domain networks: type-I without and type-II with electric self-poling. A combined phase-field simulations and experimental study shows that the frequencies of domains with N-sides, i.e. of N-gons, in a type-I network are fitted by a lognormal distribution, whereas those in type-II display a scale-free power-law distribution with exponent ~ 2. A preferential attachment process that N-gons with a larger N have higher probability of …

The Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Project. I. Catalog Construction, Kevin Bundy, Alexie Leauthaud, Shun Saito, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog (S82-MGC) is the largest-volume stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies beyond z ≈ 0.1 constructed to date. Spanning 139.4 deg2, the S82-MGC includes a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies with log M*/M⊙ ≳ 11.2 to z ≈ 0.7, sampling a volume of 0.3 Gpc3, roughly equivalent to the volume of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-I/II (SDSS-I/II) z < 0.15 main sample. The catalog is built on three pillars of survey data: the SDSS Stripe 82 Coadd photometry which reaches r-band magnitudes of ∼23.5 AB, Y JHK photometry at depths of 20th magnitude (AB) from the UK Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey, and over 70,000 spectroscopic galaxy redshifts from the SDSS-I/II and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We describe the catalog construction and verification, the production of 9-band matched aperture photometry, tests of existing and newly estimated photometric redshifts required to supplement spectroscopic redshifts for 55% of the log M*/M⊙ ≳ 11.2 sample, and geometric masking. We provide near-IR based stellar mass estimates and compare these to previous estimates. All catalog products are made publicly available. The S82-MGC …
