Process Intensification Of Fuel Synthesis And Electrolysis, Jeremy Lee Hartvigsen Jan 2020

Process Intensification Of Fuel Synthesis And Electrolysis, Jeremy Lee Hartvigsen

Doctoral Dissertations

”As more renewable energy is added to the electric grid, energy storage becomes a high priority. Suggestions have been made for energy storage in the form of fuel and chemicals. Currently, Solid Oxide Electrolysis systems can operate in endothermic mode and reduce the electrical requirement by supplying heat. Fuel synthesis from syngas is exothermic and can supply heat. However, the temperature mismatch in the normal operation of the electrolysis step and fuel synthesis step makes the direct utilization of this heat impossible. This work explores possibilities of alternate arrangements of coupling electrochemical systems and chemical synthesis. This work also explores …

Development Of Lightweight Materials By Meso- And Microstructure Control, Myranda Shea Spratt Jan 2020

Development Of Lightweight Materials By Meso- And Microstructure Control, Myranda Shea Spratt

Doctoral Dissertations

”In this work, two lightweight structures – lattice structures and metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSF) – were studied. Honeycomb lattices were manufactured by powder bed selective laser melting (SLM) from 304L stainless steel. The wall thicknesses of these structures ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Surface roughness was the primary cause of dimensional mismatch between the expected and as-built structures with an average wall thickness increase of 0.12 mm. The strength of the honeycombs increased with increasing wall thickness. A feature of the SLM microstructure, the melt pool boundary, was also studied as a part of this work. 3D models …

“Extracting higher amounts of oil from current reservoirs is a necessity for the oil industry to enhance their profitability and sustainability. The desire to recover more oil from the existing reservoirs has led to a growing interest of nanoparticle application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, most researchers have focused on the evaluation and surface modification of non-deformable nanoparticles. This dissertation evaluates the potential of deformable nanogel particles as an EOR material when they are combined with two other promising technologies - surfactant and low salinity water floodings. The particle size distribution, ζ-potential and interfacial tension were measured for a …

Decoupled Finite Element Methods For General Steady Two-Dimensional Boussinesq Equations, Lioba Boveleth Jan 2020

Decoupled Finite Element Methods For General Steady Two-Dimensional Boussinesq Equations, Lioba Boveleth

Masters Theses

"This work presents two kinds of decoupled finite element methods for the steady natural convection problem in two dimensions. Firstly, the standard Galerkin finite element method is derived in detail stating algorithms needed for the realization in MATLAB. A numerical example verifies the error convergence. Secondly, using iteration, the Boussinesq equations are decoupled into the Navier-Stokes equations and a parabolic problem. The resulting problems are solved either in parallel or sequentially. Finally, the same numerical example as before is used to confirm the convergence and analyze the methods in terms of iteration performance. In addition to a higher flexibility and …

Analysis Of Energy Economy In Muon Catalyzed Fusion Considering External X-Ray Reactivation, Nishant Raghav Pillai

Masters Theses

"An analysis of the energy economy of a theoretical muon-catalyzed nuclear fusion system has been made by invoking the use of point kinetic equations, Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations, and from a review of existing literature on muon-catalyzed fusion. An external X-ray reactivation source is proposed as a novel way to increase the number of fusions per muon and thereby overcome the so-called alpha sticking problem that has long been considered the primary impediment to breakeven muon-catalyzed fusion power. Free electron lasers, synchrotrons and Wakefield accelerators are discussed as possible bright X-ray photon sources. The addition of an intense external …

Experimental Evaluation Of A Honeycomb Structure In Open Channel Flows, Kyle David Hix

Masters Theses

“Designing and controlling open channel flows presents many challenges. One such challenge is energy dissipation. This challenge is currently addressed by several means, including the use of honeycomb structures. Energy dissipation by honeycomb structures has been studied for pressurized conduit flows; however, their ability to dissipate energy in free-surface flows remains largely unexamined. This work introduces a comprehensive experimental study designed to estimate the energy dissipation through a honeycomb structure in a free-surface flow.

This work examined the energy dissipation for a range of flows, pipe lengths, and pipe diameters in two flumes. PVC pipes ranging from 6 inches to …

Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars Jan 2020

Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a new formulation of the Gaussian particle flow filter derived using an information theoretic approach. The developed information flow addresses two problems with Gaussian particle flow: the lack of inherent meaning in the flow parameters and the inability to easily include modifications for a non-Bayesian update. Equivalency between Gaussian particle flow and information flow is established using a linear, Gaussian example. An orbit determination simulation with high initial uncertainty is used to demonstrate the consistent, robust performance of the information flow filter in situations where the extended Kalman filter fails.

Pseudospin-Polarized Topological Line Defects In Dielectric Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zhihao Lan, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic (EM) topological insulators have been extensively explored due to the robust edge states they support. In this work, we propose a topological EM system based on a line defect in topologically nontrivial photonic crystals (PCs). With a finite-difference supercell approach, modal analysis of the PC structure is investigated in detail. The topological line-defect states are pseudospin polarized and their energy flow directions are determined by the corresponding pseudospin helicities. These states can be excited by using two spatially symmetric line-source arrays carrying orbital angular momenta. The feature of the unidirectional propagation is demonstrated, and it is stable when disorders …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The initial stages of particle formation are important in several industrial and environmental systems; however, the phenomenon is not completely understood due to the inability to measure cluster size distributions. A high resolution differential mobility analyzer with an electrometer was used to map out the early stages of Si particle formation from pyrolysis of SiH4 in a furnace aerosol reactor. We detected for the first time subnanometer stable clusters from silane pyrolysis, and the diameter was measured to be about 0.7 nm. This diameter is within the range of probable sizes that the reported families of critical silane clusters could …
