Impact Of Ambient Stable Stratification On Gravity Currents Propagating Over A Submerged Canopy, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy Jan 2020

Impact Of Ambient Stable Stratification On Gravity Currents Propagating Over A Submerged Canopy, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structure and propagation of lock-release bottom gravity currents in a linearly stratified ambient with the presence of a submerged canopy are investigated for the first time using large-eddy simulations. The canopy density (i.e. The solid volume fraction), the strength of ambient stratification and the canopy height are varied to study their respective effects on the gravity current. Both denser canopies and stronger ambient stratification tend to switch the horizontal boundary along which the current propagates from the channel bed towards the canopy top (i.e. The through-To-over flow transition). It is found that the dilution of the current density is …

Propagation Of Errors Through Coning, Sculling, And Scrolling Correction Algorithms, James D. Brouk, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the propagation of estimation errors through a common coning, sculling, and scrolling architecture used in modern day inertial navigation systems. Coning, sculling, and scrolling corrections often have an unaccounted-for effect on the error statistics of inertial measurements used to describe the state and uncertainty propagation for position, velocity, and attitude estimates. Through the development of an error analysis for a set of coning, sculling, and scrolling algorithms, mappings of the measurement and estimation errors through the correction term are adaptively generated. Using the developed mappings, an efficient and consistent propagation of the state and uncertainty, within the …

These topologies consist of a two-phase interleaved boost stage with three various voltage multiplier (VM) stages. The first stage of the first three topologies is the same, which is a two-phase interleaved boost stage implemented by using inductors. The first family used in this research is based on a modified Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier stage, and this family has been studied in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The second family relies on a non-inverting or inverting diode-capacitors voltage multiplier …

Towards Efficacy And Efficiency In Sparse Delay Tolerant Networks, Douglas John Mcgeehan Jan 2020

Towards Efficacy And Efficiency In Sparse Delay Tolerant Networks, Douglas John Mcgeehan

Doctoral Dissertations

"The ubiquitous adoption of portable smart devices has enabled a new way of communication via Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs), whereby messages are routed by the personal devices carried by ever-moving people. Although a DTN is a type of Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET), traditional MANET solutions are ill-equipped to accommodate message delivery in DTNs due to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of people's movements and their spatio-temporal sparsity. More so, such DTNs are susceptible to catastrophic congestion and are inherently chaotic and arduous. This manuscript proposes approaches to handle message delivery in notably sparse DTNs. First, the ChitChat system [69] …

Enhanced Pml Based On The Long Short Term Memory Network For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new absorbing boundary condition (ABC) computation approach based on the deep learning technique. Benefited from the sequence dependence feature, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is employed to replace the conventional perfectly matched layer (PML) ABC for the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) solving process. The newly proposed LSTM based PML model is trained by the electromagnetic field data on the interface of the conventional PML. Different from the conventional PML, the newly proposed model only needs one cell layer as the boundary. Hence, the newly proposed method conveniently reduces both the algorithm's complexity and the area of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Validation is one of the most important aspects of clustering, particularly when the user is designing a trustworthy or explainable system. However, most clustering validation approaches require batch calculation. This is an important gap because of the value of clustering in real-time data streaming and other online learning applications. Therefore, interest has grown in providing online alternatives for validation. This paper extends the incremental cluster validity index (iCVI) family by presenting incremental versions of Calinski-Harabasz (iCH), Pakhira-Bandyopadhyay-Maulik (iPBM), WB index (iWB), Silhouette (iSIL), Negentropy Increment (iNI), Representative Cross Information Potential (irCIP), Representative Cross Entropy (irH), and Conn_Index (iConn_Index). Cagniard-Dehoop Technique-Based Computation Of Retarded Partial Coefficients: The Coplanar Case, Martin Stumpf, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Efficient computation of partial elements plays a key role in the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method. A novel analytical method for computing retarded partial coefficients based on the Cagniard-DeHoop (CdH) technique is proposed. The methodology is first theoretically developed and then illustrated on the computation of a surface retarded partial coefficient pertaining to two coplanar rectangular surface elements. An efficient way for incorporating loss mechanisms in the time domain (TD) via the Schouten-Van der Pol theorem is proposed. Illustrative numerical examples demonstrating the validity of the introduced solution are given.

Doctoral Dissertations

”The Zubair Formation is the most prolific reservoir in Iraq, which is comprised of sandstones interbedded with shale sequences. Due to the weak nature of the shale sequence, the instability of a wellbore is one of the most critical challenges that continuously appears during drilling across this formation. Historically, over 90% of wellbore problems in the Zubair Formation were due to wellbore instability. Problems associated with wellbore instability, such as tight hole, shale caving, stuck logging tools along with subsequent fishing, stuck pipe, and sidetracking result in increasing the non-productive time. This non-productive time has cost an enormous amount of …
