The cost of the drilling operation is very high. Drilling fluid presents 15 to 30% of the entire expense of the drilling process. Ordinarily, the major drilling fluids additives are viscosity modifiers, filtration control agents, and partial loss treatments. In this experimental work, full-set measurements under fresh and aged conditions, as well as high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) API filtration, were conducted to study the impacts of adding 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%, and 3.5% of black sunflower seeds’ shell powder (BSSSP) to spud mud. BSSSP of various grain sizes showed their ability to be invested for viscosity modifying, seepage loss controlling, and …

Optimization And Characterization Of Novel Injection Molding Process For Metal Matrix Syntactic Foams, Myranda Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal matrix syntactic foams are particulate composites comprised of hollow or porous particles embedded in a metal matrix. These composites are difficult to manufacture due primarily to the lightweight, relatively fragile filler material. In this work, an injection molding process was developed for metal matrix syntactic foams. First, an aqueous binder was optimized for low-pressure injection molding. A mixture model was used to optimize the composition of the binder to achieve the highest relative density. The model predicted the maximum relative density was at a binder composition (in vol.%) of 7% agar, 4% glycerin, and 89% water. Second, this binder …

An Overview Of Ceramic Molds For Investment Casting Of Nickel Superalloys, Janos E. Kanyo, Stefan Schafföner, R. Sharon Uwanyuze, Kaitlynn S. Leary

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accelerating advancements in technological systems have demonstrated a need for alloys with drastically improved thermomechanical and chemical properties, called superalloys. Ceramic molds are typically used in near-net shape investment casting processes of superalloy components due to their chemical inertness and high-temperature capabilities. Ceramic molds, however, often suffer from shortcomings in vital properties including flexural strength, thermal shock resistance, permeability, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, and leachability, which have restricted their ability to adequately process modern alloy castings. This study analyses these limitations and illustrates how to address them, particularly regarding ceramic mold and slurry design, processing of shells and cores, material …

Manipulating Air-Gap Electrospinning To Create Aligned Polymer Nanofiber-Wrapped Glass Microfibers For Cortical Bone Tissue Engineering, Houston R. Linder, Austin A. Glass, Delbert E. Day, Scott A. Sell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Osteons are the repeating unit throughout cortical bone, consisting of canals filled with blood and nerve vessels surrounded by concentric lamella of hydroxyapatite-containing collagen fibers, providing mechanical strength. Creating a biodegradable scaffold that mimics the osteon structure is crucial for optimizing cellular infiltration and ultimately the replacement of the scaffold with native cortical bone. In this study, a modified air-gap electrospinning setup was exploited to continuously wrap highly aligned polycaprolactone polymer nanofibers around individual 1393 bioactive glass microfibers, resulting in a synthetic structure similar to osteons. By varying the parameters of the device, scaffolds with polymer fibers wrapped at angles …

We propose a stochastic hybrid implicit-explicit finite-difference time-domain method (S-HIE-FDTD) to compute the mean and variance of the electromagnetic (EM) fields using a single simulation, given those of the conductivity and permittivity in the computation domain. The mean and variance field update equations underlying the proposed method are derived from the field update equations of the 'traditional' deterministic HIE-FDTD. The Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition of the S-HIE-FDTD depends on the spatial discretization sizes only in two dimensions; therefore, for computation domains with fine geometric features only in the remaining dimension, it uses a time step size that is larger than that of …

Vibration Analysis Of Simultaneous Drilling And Reaming Bha, Mohammed F. Al Dushaishi, Daniel S. Stutts

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The drillstring used in the oil and gas exploration is a complex structure due to the different forces acting on it. One of the primary sources of drillstring vibrations is the cutting forces caused by the drill bit contact with the rock formation. In some drilling applications, such as hole enlargement and underreaming, the source of the cutting action originates from the drill bit as well as the reamer which increases the dynamic complexity of the drillstring. This paper’s objective is to investigate the torsional vibration behaviors of the bottom hole assembly (BHA) under simultaneous drilling and reaming. More specifically, …

Digital technology has become an integral, if not overwhelming, part of many people’s lives. As the use and pervasiveness of technology has increased, the popularity of taking a sabbath from it has also increased. In this paper we ask if and how a technology fast assignment influences students’ lives beyond the classroom. Transformative learning, supported by active and experiential learning, suggests that in order for students to reap the greatest benefits of education, learning must influence perceptions and behavior outside of the class environment. In two semesters of “Human-Computer Interaction” classes, students were assigned a technology fast in which they …

Experimental Evaluation Of The Deadtime Phenomenon For Gm Detector: Deadtime Dependence On Operating Voltages, Bader Almutairi, Syed B. Alam, Tayfun Akyurek, Cameron S. Goodwin, Shoaib Usman

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A detailed analysis of Geiger Mueller counter deadtime dependence on operating voltage is presented in the manuscript using four pairs of radiation sources. Based on two-source method, detector deadtime is calculated for a wide range of operating voltages which revealed a peculiar relationship between the operating voltage and the detector deadtime. In the low voltage range, a distinct drop in deadtime was observed where deadtime reached a value as low as a few microseconds (22 µs for 204Tl, 26 µs for 137Cs, 9 µs for 22Na). This sharp drop in the deadtime is possibly due to reduced …

In this paper, we proposed a deep neural network (DNN)-based estimation of efficiency enhancement by an intermediate (Int) coil in automotive wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The Int coil can enhance the efficiency in the WPT system with the proper resonant frequency of the Int coil. The previous study has explained the resonant frequency of the Int coil should be higher than the operating frequency. According to the resonant frequency of the Int coil, we can achieve the amount of efficiency enhancement. Therefore, the design of the Int coil is essential for optimize the efficiency enhancement of the automotive WPT …

Optimal Matching Reactance Design And Validation In Wireless Power Transfer System For Electric Vehicle Based On Sae J2954-Rp, Anfeng Huang, Dongwook Kim, Qiusen He, Hanyu Zhang, Yuyu Zhu, Hongseok Kim, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is foreseen as a suitable technology to provide charging without cables to electric vehicles. The charging requires a specific charging profile for different type of battery. In addition, the loading condition of the charging circuit could change drastically as following the charging profile. Due to the dependencies on loading condition, the transmission efficiency of a WPT system could degrade during the charging process. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of efficiency to loading condition could be reduced with proper design of compensation network, e.g., LCC. In this paper, a SPICE-simulation based optimization flow is demonstrated for matching reactance optimization …

In recent years, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology is becoming an increasingly important part of the various applications because of its safety. Especially, medical implant devices such as a cochlear implant are one of the typical applications of the WPT technology. Because of the individual body differences, however, the coupling coefficient of the WPT system can be changed. Therefore, the coupling coefficient-insensitivity is very important design issue. In this paper, we propose a stagger tuning method of a cochlear implant WPT system. The proposed method makes the cochlear implant WPT system stable at the link gain regardless of the coupling …

New Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Approximation Theory For Pde Solution Data, Sarah Locke, John R. Singler Nov 2020

New Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Approximation Theory For Pde Solution Data, Sarah Locke, John R. Singler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In our previous work [J. R. Singler, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 52 (2014), pp. 852- 876], we considered the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of time varying PDE solution data taking values in two different Hilbert spaces. We considered various POD projections of the data and obtained new results concerning POD projection errors and error bounds for POD reduced order models of PDEs. In this work, we improve on our earlier results concerning POD projections by extending to a more general framework that allows for nonorthogonal POD projections and seminorms. We obtain new exact error formulas and convergence results for POD …

A Markov Chain Approach For Forecasting Progression Of Opioid Addiction, Abhijit Gosavi, Susan L. Murray, N. Karagiannis

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The U.S. is currently facing an opioid crisis. Naltrexone is a common treatment for drug addiction; it reduces the desire to take opiates. However, addicts often stop treatment or continue to use opioids while in treatment. This results in increased fatalities and associated costs. A Markov-chain model is presented to analyze the progression of opioid addiction to assist the medical community in developing appropriate treatments. The model includes patients who continue opiate use while on naltrexone (blocked patients) and those who use opiates after missing naltrexone doses (unblocked patients). The other types of patients are abstinent (the best-case scenario) and …

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique that uses a laser to locally fuse material in a metal-powder bed. The process is performed in layers enabling significant geometric freedom over traditional manufacturing techniques. During the deposition process, the metal is locally melted and rapidly self-quenched, leading to rapid solidification with well-defined melt-pool boundaries. Analogies are often drawn to the microstructure created in welding, albeit extending to the entire part. The SLM process parameters are optimized to produce near full density metal parts. The process parameters can also be adjusted to produce local regions that are of unmelted …
