A methodology was developed to predict pressure and temperature regimes achieved during detonation of RDX/TNT compositions with inert granular inclusions. The predicted pressures and temperatures are used as inputs for thermochemical simulations to design detonation synthesis experiments that utilize shock-induced chemical reactions to produce ceramic nanomaterials. This study computationally assessed the effects of inert spherical sand inclusions and porosity produced by inert additives on the sensitivity of the explosive composition during the shock-to-detonation transition using a limited scope approach through Lee-Tarver ignition and growth modeling. On the continuum scale, the effects of inert additives on pressure generation behind the detonation …

This paper proposes a family of high-voltage-gain step-up dc-dc converters for photovoltaic integration application. The proposed converters are capable of converting the low voltage from input sources to a dc bus. The proposed family is constructed of interleaved single-switch multistage boost converters and voltage multiplier cells (VMC). The proposed converters feature low voltage stress across the components, equal current sharing among all phases, and a smooth input current. Moreover, the proposed family of converters has a modular structure in both the VMC and the boost stage. That is, the VMC can have N number of cells, and the boost stage …

In this paper, we investigate the representation of curves on the lightlike cone ℚ³₂ in Minkowski space ℝ⁴₂ by structure functions. In addition, with this representation, we classify all of the null curves on the lightlike cone ℚ³₂ in four types, and we obtain a natural Frenet frame for these null curves. Furthermore, for this natural Frenet frame, we calculate curvature functions of a null curve, especially the curvature function κ₂ = 0 , and we show that any null curve on the lightlike cone is a helix. Finally, we find all curves with constant curvature functions.

As a large number of parameters exist in deep model-based methods, training such models usually requires many fully AU-annotated facial images. This is true with regard to the number of frames in two widely used datasets: BP4D [31] and DISFA [18], while those frames were captured from a small number of subjects (41, 27 respectively). This is problematic, as subjects produce highly consistent facial muscle movements, adding more frames per subject would only adds more close points in the feature space, and thus the classifier does not benefit from those extra frames. Data augmentation methods can be applied to alleviate …

As a renewable biomass resource, biochar is new to modify or replace asphalt binder in pavement engineering. This paper focuses on the effect of biochar on the anti-aging performance of asphalt binder. The short-and long-term aging properties of biochar modified asphalt binder were investigated using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The modification mechanism was investigated through the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test. The aging tests and viscosity analysis showed that the softening point of biochar modified asphalt binder was higher than base asphalt binder, while the aging index and aging viscosity ratio were lower than …

Emotion is an experience associated with a particular pattern of physiological activity along with different physiological, behavioral and cognitive changes. One behavioral change is facial expression, which has been studied extensively over the past few decades. Facial behavior varies with a person's emotion according to differences in terms of culture, personality, age, context, and environment. In recent years, physiological activities have been used to study emotional responses. A typical signal is the electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures brain activity. Most of existing EEG-based emotion analysis has overlooked the role of facial expression changes. There exits little research on the relationship between …

Effective monitoring of groundwater withdrawals is necessary to help mitigate the negative impacts of aquifer depletion. In this study, we develop a holistic approach that combines water balance components with a machine learning model to estimate groundwater withdrawals. We use both multitemporal satellite and modeled data from sensors that measure different components of the water balance and land use at varying spatial and temporal resolutions. These remote sensing products include evapotranspiration, precipitation, and land cover. Due to the inherent complexity of integrating these data sets and subsequently relating them to groundwater withdrawals using physical models, we apply random forests -- …

Dry biomes occupy ~35% of the landscape in the Neotropics, but these are heavily human-disturbed. In spite of their importance, we still do not fully understand their origins and how they are sustained. The Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia is dominated by dry biomes and has a rich Neogene fossil record. Here, we have analyzed its changes in vegetation and precipitation during the Neogene using a fossil pollen and spore dataset of 20 samples taken from a well and we also dated the stratigraphic sequence using microfossils. In addition, we analyzed the pollen and spore contents of 10 Holocene samples …

Lost circulation is an expensive and critical problem in the drilling operations. Millions of dollars are spent every year to mitigate or stop this problem. In this work, data from over 3000 wells were collected from multiple sources. The data went through a processing step where all outliers were removed, and decision rules were set up. Multiple machine learning methods (support vector machine, decision trees, logistic regression, artificial neural networks, and ensemble trees) were used to create a model that can predict the best lost circulation treatment based on the type of loss and the reason of loss. 5-fold cross-validation …

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is used as a minor void filler in revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA). The application of PMMA is indicated only for peripheral bone defects with less than 5 mm depth and that cover less than 50% of the bone surface. Treating bone defects with PMMA results in complications as a result of volumetric shrinkage, bone necrosis, and aseptic loosening. These concerns have driven the development of alternative bone cements. We report here on novel modified glass polyalkenoate cements (mGPCs) containing 1, 5 and 15 wt% calcium sulfate (CaSO4) and how the modified …

In order to evaluate the risk level of water inrush caused by karst cave accurately and effectively, a novel quantitative assessment model was established based on the reliability theory and genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) neural network. First, the reliability theory and the calculation formula of the minimum safe thickness were used to calculate the water inrush probability. Second, the GA-BP neural network was applied to predict the disaster consequence caused by water inrush. Six factors, including water pressure, hydraulic supply, type of gap, filling situation, degree of water enrichment and reserves of cave, were selected as the input layer of …

Early detection of corrosion in steel bridges is essential for strategizing the mitigation of further corrosion damage. Although various image-based approaches are available in the literature for corrosion detection, most of these approaches are tested on images acquired under uniform natural daylight illuminations i.e., inherent variations in the ambient lighting conditions are ignored. Owing to the fact that varying natural daylight illuminations, shadows, water wetting, and oil wetting are unavoidable in real-world scenarios, it is important to devise a robust technique for corrosion identification. In the current study, four different color spaces namely ‘RGB’, ‘rgb’, ‘HSV’ and ‘CIE La*b*’ along …

This paper proposes a family of step-up three-level DC-DC converter topologies suitable for photovoltaic panel integration applications. The proposed family is suitable to convert the 10-30 V from photovoltaic panels to a 150 V direct current distribution bus. The proposed family enhances the three-level topology in terms of the voltage gain, power density, and filtering requirements at the input level. The filtration is reduced by interleaving. The three-level boost converter's voltage gain is enhanced by utilizing several options such as switched capacitor cells, switched inductor cells, and flyback transformers or coupled inductors. The enhancement techniques are illustrated by providing the …

A low-cost, wideband printed circuit boards (PCBs) manufactured antenna is proposed in this letter for 5G/6G antenna-in-package (AiP) applications with wideband common-mode current (surface-wave) choking characteristics. The antenna is based on a grounded, wideband, high-efficiency electromagnetic structure (WHEMS) and a backing cavity, in which a radiating choke is introduced. By changing the choking condition of a quarter-wavelength, widely applied in traditional low-frequency baluns, wideband common-mode current suppression is achieved. The enclosing wall of the backing cavity is realized by a combination of isolated grounded vias and connected grounded vias based on current polarization on the wall. Finally, a 22% impedance …

We report on gravitational wave discoveries from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo between 1 April 2019 15:00 UTC and 1 October 2019 15:00 UTC. By imposing a false-alarm-rate threshold of two per year in each of the four search pipelines that constitute our search, we present 39 candidate gravitational wave events. At this threshold, we expect a contamination fraction of less than 10%. Of these, 26 candidate events were reported previously in near real-time through GCN Notices and Circulars; 13 are reported here for the first time. The catalog contains events whose sources are black …

Direct 3d Printing Of Silica Doped Transparent Magnesium Aluminate Spinel Ceramics, John M. Pappas, Xiangyang Dong
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Transparent magnesium aluminate spinel ceramics were additively manufactured via a laser direct deposition method in this study. With a minimum porosity of 0.3% achieved, highly transparent spinel samples with the highest total optical transmittance of 82% at a wavelength of 632.8 nm, were obtained by a 3D printing approach. However, cracking was found to be a major issue affecting printed spinel samples. To control prevalent cracking, the effect of silica dopants was investigated. Increased silica dopants reduced average total crack length by up to 79% and average crack density by up to 71%. However, a high dopant level limited optical …

Efficient Yield Estimation Of Multiband Patch Antennas By Polynomial Chaos-Based Kriging, Leifur Leifsson, Xiaosong Du, Slawomir Koziel
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Yield estimation of antenna systems is important to check their robustness with respect to the uncertain sources. Since direct Monte Carlo sampling of accurate physics-based models can be computationally intensive, this work proposes the use of the polynomial chaos–Kriging (PC-Kriging) metamodeling method for fast yield estimation of multiband patch antennas. PC-Kriging integrates the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) as the trend function of Kriging metamodel since the PCE is good at capturing the function tendency and Kriging is good at matching the observations at training points. The PC-Kriging method is demonstrated on two analytical cases and two multiband patch antenna cases …

Advances in deep neural networks (DNN) greatly bolster real-time detection of anomalous IoT data. However, IoT devices can hardly afford complex DNN models, and offloading anomaly detection tasks to the cloud incurs long delay. In this paper, we propose and build a demo for an adaptive anomaly detection approach for distributed hierarchical edge computing (HEC) systems to solve this problem, for both univariate and multivariate IoT data. First, we construct multiple anomaly detection DNN models with increasing complexity and associate each model with a layer in HEC from bottom to top. Then, we design an adaptive scheme to select one …

Particle size is an essential factor when considering the fate and transport of virus-containing droplets expelled by human, because it determines the deposition pattern in the human respiratory system and the evolution of droplets by evaporation and gravitational settling. However, the evolution of virus-containing droplets and the size-dependent viral load have not been studied in detail. The lack of this information leads to uncertainties in understanding the airborne transmission of respiratory diseases, such as the COVID-19. In this study, through a set of differential equations describing the evolution of respiratory droplets and by using the SARS-CoV-2 virus as an example, …

The role of human-machine teams in society is increasing, as big data and computing power explode. One popular approach to AI is deep learning, which is useful for classification, feature identification, and predictive modeling. However, deep learning models often suffer from inadequate transparency and poor explainability. One aspect of human systems integration is the design of interfaces that support human decision-making. AI models have multiple types of uncertainty embedded, which may be difficult for users to understand. Humans that use these tools need to understand how much they should trust the AI. This study evaluates one simple approach for communicating …

We have performed kinematically complete experiments on single-electron capture in slow He2+-Ar collisions. Besides the pure capture to the He+ (n = 2) level, capture into the deep He+ ( n= 1) state with simultaneous excitation of another target electron is also observed. In contrast to the pure capture, the total cross section for this two-electron transition decreases with increasing collision energy, and its angular-differential cross section exhibits a much slighter slope. We take these observations as evidence for electron capture mediated by electron-electron interactions.

We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Γ point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K,K′ points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking …

In this paper, we present an enhanced sensitivity of temperature sensors based on thermo-coupled Multicore Fiber (MCF) structures. The sensors are all fabricated using a controlled arc power of a splicing device. Two different principles of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and Michelson interferometer (MI) have been observed experimentally. The MZI and MI structures exhibit temperature sensitivity as 136.67 pm/°C and 70.61 pm/°C, respectively, and found insensitive to the refractive index (RI). Also, its RI response can readily resolve the issues of cross-sensitivity.

In this paper, we proposed a nano-power tunable bump circuit. It incorporates a novel source-degenerated trans conductor using pseudo-resistor as source resistor to control the width of the bump. The presented circuit is simulated in Cadence using 180nm CMOS process under 1.8V power supply. The results show that the transconductance is tuned with pseudo-resistor and the bump circuit can operate with wide voltage range from 0.3V to 1.8V. Also, this circuit is compact and only dissipates 16.7nW power which makes it perfect for large-scale machine learning applications such as classifier and support vector machine.
