A Brief On Optimal Transport, Austin G. Vandegriffe
A Brief On Optimal Transport, Austin G. Vandegriffe
Graduate Student Research & Creative Works
Optimal transport is an interesting and exciting application of measure theory to optimization and analysis. In the following, I will bring you through a detailed treatment of random variable couplings, transport plans, basic properties of transport plans, and finishing with the Wasserstein distance on spaces of probability measures with compact support. No detail is left out in this presentation, but some results have further generality and more intricate consequences when tools like measure disintegration are used. But this is left for future work.
A Brief On Characteristic Functions, Austin G. Vandegriffe
A Brief On Characteristic Functions, Austin G. Vandegriffe
Graduate Student Research & Creative Works
Characteristic functions (CFs) are often used in problems involving convergence in distribution, independence of random variables, infinitely divisible distributions, and stochastics. The most famous use of characteristic functions is in the proof of the Central Limit Theorem, also known as the Fundamental Theorem of Statistics. Though less frequent, CFs have also been used in problems of nonparametric time series analysis and in machine learning. Moreover, CFs uniquely determine their distribution, much like the moment generating functions (MGFs), but the major difference is that CFs always exists, whereas MGFs can fail, e.g. the Cauchy distribution. This makes CFs more robust in …

Disruption of the circadian system caused by disordered exposure to light is pervasive in modern society and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms by which this happens are largely unknown. ApolipoproteinE-deficient (ApoE−/−) mice are studied commonly to elucidate mechanisms of atherosclerosis. In this study, we determined the effects of light-induced circadian disruption on atherosclerosis in ApoE−/− mice. We first characterized circadian rhythms of behavior, light responsiveness, and molecular timekeeping in tissues from ApoE−/− mice that were indistinguishable from rhythms in ApoE+/+ mice. These data showed that ApoE−/− mice had no inherent circadian disruption and therefore were an appropriate …

The temporal and spatial distribution of strain associated with the Sevier orogeny in western North America is significantly different in the southern end of the belt, at the latitude of Las Vegas, Nevada, than farther to the north at the latitude of Salt Lake City, Utah. Reasons for these differences have been speculative as a lack of temporal constraints on thrusting in the intervening region hindered along-strike correlation across the belt. We determined a crystallization age of 100.18 ± 0.04 Ma for zircons extracted from a recently recognized dacite lapilli ash-fall tuff near the base of the synorogenic Iron Springs …

Commercial And Legal Considerations Of Offsite Construction Projects And Their Hybrid Transactions, Rayan Assaad, Islam H. El-Adaway, Makarand Hastak, Kim La Scola Needy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The commercial and legal challenges of offsite construction technology have become more pronounced with the ongoing rise and growing popularity of such construction method. Offsite construction represents a combination between construction services-based activities and manufacturing/fabrication goods-based tasks, thus called hybrid transactions. This mixed nature has created many uncertainties concerning whether the common law or the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) shall govern. To this end, this paper aims to enhance the knowledge of the commercial and legal treatment of hybrid offsite construction transactions. To achieve that, this paper followed a research methodology that employs three types of analysis: Analysis of the …

Innovative Approach To Repair Corroded Steel Piles Using Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Binod Shrestha, Ahmed Gheni, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel H-piles are a common structural system in existing bridges. Many steel H-piles have been corroded as a result of severe weather and acid/alkaline salt exposures, causing a reduction in the axial load capacity. This paper experimentally investigates the use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) encasement as a novel repair method for corroded steel H-pile. UHPC displays better tensile strength, early compressive strength, workability, and durability compared with conventional concrete. The proposed repair is used to bridge the corroded section in H-pile using either a cast-in-place or precast UHPC elements. A series of push-out tests was conducted on eight full-scale …

Experimental Evaluation Of Square Ferrocement Panels Using Polypropylene Wire Mesh, N. Khurram, U. Akmal, M. Raza, A. Hameed, M. Irfan Ul Hassan
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ferrocement panels are thin section comprised of hydraulic mortar reinforced with steel wire mesh and are susceptible to micro cracks at service conditions. The moisture and rainwater may infiltrate through these cracks and cause the reduction in capacity due to the corrosion of steel wire mesh. In the present study, a polypropylene (PP) wire mesh has been used to overcome this problem. The main objective of the study is to investigate the punching shear and bending capacity of the ferrocement panels using PP wire mesh. Experimental tests conducted on 32 simply supported square slabs panels of 450x450 mm subjected to …
Bond Behavior Between Steel Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Srp) And Concrete, Xingxing Zou, Lesley Sneed
Bond Behavior Between Steel Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Srp) And Concrete, Xingxing Zou, Lesley Sneed
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel fiber reinforced polymer (SRP) composite materials, which consist of continuous unidirectional steel wires (cords) embedded in a polymeric matrix, have recently emerged as an effective solution for strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SRP is bonded to the surface of RC structures by the same matrix to provide external reinforcement. Interfacial debonding between the SRP and concrete is a primary concern in this type of application. This study aimed to investigate the bond characteristics between SRP and concrete determined by single-lap direct shear tests with different composite bonded lengths and fiber sheet densities (cord spacings). Specimens with medium density …

Shear Wave Velocity Anisotropy Of Salt- And Polymer-Amended Kaolinite, X. Kang, J. Cao, B. Bate
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Shear wave velocity (Vs) anisotropy of kaolinite mixed with sodium chloride (NaCl) and organic polymer (polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, and chitosan) solutions was investigated using a custom-made floating wall consolidometer-type bender element testing system. The addition of salt and polymers influenced the microfabric anisoopy of platy kaolinite particles, thus resulted in the increment or decrement in the Vs anisotropy. The Vs of kaolinite in all three orthogonal directions increased as the NaCl concentration increased; however, the Vs anisotropy decreased. PEO and chitosan increased the Vs of kaolinite, while xanthan gum exhibited counter-effects. Vs anisotropy (Vs−hh/Vs−vh and Vs−hv/Vs−vh) of polymer amended …

Machine-Learning-Based Hybrid Method For The Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm, Jia Jing Sun, Sheng Sun, Yongpin P. Chen, Lijun Jiang, Jun Hu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this letter, a hybrid translation computation method for the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is proposed based on machine learning. The hybrid method combines both generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and artificial neural network (ANN) to replace the traditional translation procedure during the solving process of the MLFMA. Based on the data corresponding to every one of the interaction list boxes at each level, the hybrid neural network is trained. Comparing with the previous machine learning method in this field, the proposed model is more general, and with lower complexity since it inherits the accuracy of the GRNN as …

Electrical magnetoresistance and tunnel diode oscillator measurements were performed under external magnetic fields up to 41 T applied along the crystallographic b axis (hard axis) of UTe2 as a function of temperature and applied pressures up to 18.8 kbar. In this work, we track the field-induced first-order transition between superconducting and magnetic field-polarized phases as a function of applied pressure, showing suppression of the transition with increasing pressure until the demise of superconductivity near 16 kbar and the appearance of a pressure-induced ferromagnetic-like ground state that is distinct from the field-polarized phase and stable at zero field. Together with …

In-Plane Anisotropic Third-Harmonic Generation From Germanium Arsenide Thin Flakes, Huseyin Sar, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A newly introduced two-dimensional (2D) layered germanium arsenide (GeAs) has attracted growing interest due to its promising highly in-plane anisotropic crystal structure and electronic properties for photonic and optoelectronic applications. The potential of 2D layered GeAs for many applications such as anisotropic photodetection, electronics, superconductivity and thermoelectricity is being investigated in recent studies. However, the intrinsic nonlinear optical properties of 2D layered GeAs have not been explored yet. Here, thickness- and incident polarization-dependent in-plane anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) from the mechanically exfoliated thin GeAs flakes is reported. Furthermore, the effect of the flake thickness on the THG conversion efficiency is …

Modular Framework For Implementation And Analysis Of Recursive Filters With Considered And Neglected Parameters, Kyle J. Demars, Kari C. Ward
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper develops novel covariance and square-root factor formulations of a consider-neglect Kalman filter for navigation applications. The proposed filter partitions system parameters into three distinct categories: those to be estimated by the filter, those whose contribution to the system are considered without being explicitly estimated, and those with sufficiently low effect on the system such that their contribution can be neglected altogether. Discussion on appropriate selection of parameters to be considered and neglected is provided with specific attention given to descent-to-landing navigation. Monte Carlo simulations and analysis are performed to assess the performance of the developed square-root consider-neglect filter …

The ability to prevent catastrophic failures in secondary bonded CFRP adhesive joints is important for reliable automotive and aerospace structures. In a previous study, we proposed an innovative damage-tolerant interfacial design concept for adhesively bonded composite joints, which relied on the extrinsic dissipation of bridging adhesive ligaments enabled by controlling the adhesion at CFRP/epoxy interfaces. In this work, we experimentally validate this strategy by combining laser processing and mechanical testing using double cantilever beam (DCB) joints. Mechanical tests indicate that the pattern geometry, i.e., number and spacing of the areas with different adhesion, controls the formation of either single or …

Fuel-rich composite powders combining elemental Si with the metal fluoride oxidizers BiF3 and CoF2 were prepared by arrested reactive milling. Reactivity of the composite powders was assessed using thermoanalytical measurements in both inert (Ar) and oxidizing (Ar/O2) environments. Powders were ignited using an electrically heated filament; particle combustion experiments were performed in room air using a CO2 laser as an ignition source. Both composites showed accelerated oxidation of Si when heated in oxidizing environments and ignited readily using the heated filament. Elemental Si, used as a reference, did not exhibit appreciable oxidation when heated under the same conditions and could …

Layered transition metal chalcogenides are promising hosts of electronic Weyl nodes and topological superconductivity. MoTe2 is a striking example that harbors both noncentrosymmetric Td and centrosymmetric T' phases, both of which have been identified as topologically nontrivial. Applied pressure tunes the structural transition separating these phases to zero temperature, stabilizing a mixed Td–T' matrix that entails a network of interfaces between the two nontrivial topological phases. Here, we show that this critical pressure range is characterized by distinct coherent quantum oscillations, indicating that the difference in topology between topologically nonvtrivial Td and T' phases gives …

Although building information modeling (BIM) is experiencing substantial development and use in the construction industry, its legal and business structures lag far behind. While many research efforts have been devoted to promoting the implementation of BIM in the construction industry, very few of them have actually attempted to explore its contractual environment. In fact, previous studies reported the lack of, and need for, a holistic understanding of BIM contractual requirements. To fill this gap, this paper assists the various project parties in better understanding BIM contractual integration and utilization in the construction industry at different key levels: contractual incorporation of …

As the first wave of COVID-19 cases spread around the globe in early 2020, the healthcare community adopted a medical model that emphasized the use of resources to mitigate viral spread (Oerther & Watson, 2020). Schools, churches, and businesses shutdown, and healthcare facilities – from outpatient clinics to inpatient elective surgeries – were closed or cancelled. Even long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes, limited access of visitors to patients in an attempt at mitigation. And for six months, the healthcare community focused almost exclusively on a medical response to COVID-19, securing stockpiles of ventilators and fast-tracking vaccine development.

Wireless devices are the largest part of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) units. Radiated, such as specific absorption rate and spurious related issues are regulated by the standards bodies. The functionality performance will greatly influence IoT system stability, user experience, and cost. Radio receiver desensitization and coexistence aspects of IoT devices are discussed in this article. Measurement technologies are briefly reviewed for transmit/receive mode only of single-input single-output (SISO), and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) devices, to provide a means of device performance evaluation and electromagnetic interference troubleshooting. An understanding of the electromagnetic compatibility aspects of the IoT and its measurement methods can help …

Na+–K+–2Cl− Cotransporter (NKCC1) is a protein that aids in the active transport of sodium, potassium, and chloride ions across cell membranes. It has been shown that long-term systemic treatment with aldosterone (ALD) can enhance NKCC1 protein expression and activity in the aging cochlea resulting in improved hearing. In the present work, we used a cell line with confirmed NKCC1 expression to demonstrate that in vitro application of ALD increased outward voltage-gated potassium currents significantly, and simultaneously upregulated whole lysate and membrane portion NKCC1 protein expression. These ALD-induced changes were blocked by applying the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist eplerenone. However, application of …

We have previously shown the suitability of aerogels as scaffolds for neuronal cells. Here, we report on the use of super elastic shape memory polyurethane aerogels (SSMPA). SSMPA have a distinctly different stiffness than previously reported aerogels. The soft and deformable nature of SSMPA allowed for radial compression of the aerogel induced by a custom designed apparatus. This radial compression changed the pore diameter and surface roughness (Sa) of SSMPA, while maintaining similar stiffness. Two varieties of SSMPA were used, Mix-14 and Mix-18, with distinctly different pore diameters and Sa. Radial compression led to a decreased pore diameter, which, in …

A micro-annulus (MA) is defined as a high permeability zone or gap initiating/occurring at the casing-cement and cement-formation interfaces during the wellbore life span. An MA can significantly compromise wellbore integrity by establishing enhanced fluid flow pathways. This study uses a staged finite element approach to simulate wellbore integrity during various loading steps of wellbore operations under downhole conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on the processes of cement poro-elastic property evolution, volume variation, and pore pressure variation as part of the cement hardening step. The resulting state of stress during the life cycle of a typical injection well (i.e. hardening, …
