Persistent pharmaceutical pollutants (PPPs) have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors that mimic growth hormones when consumed at nanogram per liter to microgram per liter concentrations. Their occurrence in potable water remains a great threat to human health. Different conventional technologies developed for their removal from wastewater have failed to achieve complete mineralization. Advanced oxidation technologies such as dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) based on free radical mechanisms have been identified to completely decompose PPPs. Due to the existence of pharmaceuticals as mixtures in wastewater and the recalcitrance of their degradation intermediate by-products, no single advanced oxidation technology has been able …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) have increased daily, or induced sodium intake compared to normotensive rats. In normotensive rats, angiotensin II (ANG II)-induced sodium intake is blocked by the inactivation of p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinase, also known as extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase1/2 (ERK1/2). Here we investigated if inhibition of ERK1/2 pathway centrally would change sodium appetite and intracerebroventricular (icv) ANG II-induced pressor response in SHRs. SHRs (280−330 g, n = 07–14/group) with stainless steel cannulas implanted in the lateral ventricle (LV) were used. Water and 0.3 M NaCl intake was induced by the treatment with the diuretic furosemide + captopril (angiotensin …

A High-Temperature-Resistant Inorganic Matrix For Concrete Structures Enhanced By Fiber-Reinforced Polymer, Jing Zhu, Wenzhong Zheng, Lili Xie, Lesley Sneed

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper probed deep into a high-temperature resistant inorganic matrix: alkali-activated slag cement (AASC), which is a kind of cementitious material prepared by alkali-activator and pozzolanic or latent hydraulic material. Firstly, the mix ratio of the AASC was optimized to improve the wettability and mechanical properties. Then, the effects of the adhesive matrix and the type of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) were observed through FRP-to-concrete bond tests on 93 specimens. The test results, coupled with anchorage analysis, indicate that the AASC has comparable reinforcing effects as those of organic epoxy matrix; the anchorage length of FRP sheets has a significant influence …

Bone Cement As A Local Chemotherapeutic Drug Delivery Carrier In Orthopedic Oncology: A Review, Sunjeev S. Phull, Alireza Rahimnejad Yazdi, Michelle Ghert, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metastatic bone lesions are common among patients with advanced cancers. While chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be prescribed immediately after diagnosis, the majority of severe metastatic bone lesions are treated by reconstructive surgery, which, in some cases, is followed by postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy. However, despite recent advancements in orthopedic surgery, patients undergoing reconstruction still have the risk of developing severe complications such as tumor recurrence and reconstruction failure. This has led to the introduction and evaluation of poly (methyl methacrylate) and inorganic bone cements as local carriers for chemotherapeutic drugs (usually, antineoplastic drugs (ANPDs)). The present work is a critical …

This work presents a technical investigation and review of the development of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) employed in different applications to save electrical energy. The MMMs design has been recently adjusted and improved to restore more energy bulks. The important factors to control the performance of the MMMs are the penetrant type, membrane matrix, and polymer-filler interface interactions. This study reviews the current methods to deal with dielectric MMMs and smart nanomembranes for energy saving. These methods include ferroelectric membrane fabrication, dielectric permittivity, conductive dopants, construction of nanocomposites with modified surfaces, and the usage of combined effects. Most chemists and …

Absorption Of Nitrogen During Pulsed Wave L-Pbf Of 17-4 Ph Steel, Ben Brown, Joseph William Newkirk, Frank W. Liou Feb 2021

Absorption Of Nitrogen During Pulsed Wave L-Pbf Of 17-4 Ph Steel, Ben Brown, Joseph William Newkirk, Frank W. Liou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the fabrication of 17-4 PH by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) the well-documented occurrence of large amounts of retained austenite can be attributed to an elevated concentration of nitrogen present in the material. While the effects of continuous wave (CW) laser processing on in-situ nitrogen absorption characteristics have been evaluated, power modulated pulsed wave (PW) laser processing effects have not. In this study the effects of PW L-PBF processing of 17-4 PH on nitrogen absorption, phase composition, and mechanical performance are explored using commercially available PW L-PBF equipment and compared to samples produced by CW L-PBF. PW L-PBF samples …

Herein, we report the syntheses of two lithium-vanadium oxide-fluoride compounds crystallized from the same reaction mixture through a time variation experiment. A low temperature hydrothermal route employing a viscous paste of V2O5, oxalic acid, LiF, and HF allowed the crystallization of one metastable phase initially, Li2VO0.55 (H2O)0.45F5·2H2O (I), which on prolonged heating transforms to a chemically similar yet structurally different phase, Li3VOF5 (II). Compound I crystallizes in centrosymmetric space group, I2/a with a = 6.052(3), b = 7.928(4), …

Decoupling Of Antennas With Adjacent Frequency Bands Using Cascaded Decoupling Network, Min Li, Min Wang, Lijun Jiang, Lawrence Kwan Yeung

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This communication presents a novel decoupling device called a cascaded power dividing decoupling network (C-PDDN). It is cascaded with two antennas operating in adjacent or even contiguous frequency bands to reduce the mutual coupling. To achieve high isolations at n desired frequency points, an n -order C-PDDN can be accordingly designed. Each order PDDN consists of two power dividers (PDs), two sections of transmission lines, and one reactive component. Explicit design formulas are presented to calculate the design parameters of the C-PDDN to meet the required isolation criteria. To validate the decoupling concept, a two-order C-PDDN is designed and applied …

Worldwide use and disposal of plastics have reached a dramatic saturation point, polluting lands, oceans, and air across the globe. Responding to such a challenge requires, among other environmental remediation measures, the manufacture of alternative sustainable plastics. Recent studies in the area have enabled the development of degradable plastics; however, the rate and conditions required for the degradation of such materials remains under scrutiny. Here, we introduce a new class of fully plant-based, rapidly degradable lignin and zein composite blend that can be transformed into macroscopic structures using extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing. Corn-derived zein forms the polymeric solution, while insoluble …

Non-Prehensile Manipulation Of A Devil-Stick: Planar Symmetric Juggling Using Impulsive Forces, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee Feb 2021

Non-Prehensile Manipulation Of A Devil-Stick: Planar Symmetric Juggling Using Impulsive Forces, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Juggling a devil-stick can be described as a problem of non-prehensile manipulation. Assuming that the devil-stick remains confined to the vertical plane, the problem of juggling the stick between two symmetric configurations is considered. Impulsive forces are applied to the stick intermittently and the impulse of the force and its point of application are modeled as control inputs to the system. The dynamics of the devil-stick due to the impulsive forces and gravity is described by half-return maps between two Poincaré sections; the symmetric configurations are fixed points of these sections. A coordinate transformation is used to convert the juggling …

Characterization And Oil Recovery Enhancement By A Polymeric Nanogel Combined With Surfactant For Sandstone Reservoirs, Mustafa Mohammed Almahfood, Baojun Bai

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The characterization and enhanced oil recovery mechanisms of a nanosized polymeric cross-linked gel are presented herein. A negatively charged nanogel was synthesized using a typical free radical suspension polymerization process by employing 2-acrylamido 2-methyl propane sulfonic acid monomer. The synthesized nanogel showed a narrow size distribution with one peak pointing to a predominant homogeneous droplet size. The charged nanogels were also able to adsorb at the oil-water interfaces to reduce interfacial tension and stabilize oil-in-water emulsions, which ultimately improved the recovered oil from hydrocarbon reservoirs. In addition, a fixed concentration of negatively charged surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate or SDS) was …

The emergence of antibiotic resistance over the past several decades has given urgency to new antibacterial strategies that apply less selective pressure. A new class of anti-virulence compounds were developed that are active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), by inhibiting bacterial virulence without hindering their growth to reduce the selective pressure for resistance development. One of the compounds CCG-211790 has demonstrated potent anti-biofilm activity against MRSA. This new class of anti-virulence compounds inhibited the gene expression of virulence factors involved in biofilm formation and disrupted the biofilm structures. In this study, the physicochemical properties of CCG- 211790, including morphology, solubility …

Thermodynamic Prediction And Experimental Verification Of Multiphase Composition Of Scale Formed On Reheated Alloy Steels, Richard Osei, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Ronald O'Malley

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structure, phase, and composition of scale formed on a continuously cast steel slab during reheating depend on intrinsic factors (steel chemistry, microstructure, and as-cast surface condition) and extrinsic parameters (temperature, time, composition, and velocity of combustion gas atmosphere). The scale that forms on a slab normally has several layers with differing compositions and phases and knowledge of this scale structure is important in subsequent descaling and hot rolling processing steps. Formation of multiphase scale structures on steel during high temperature oxidation in reheat furnace proceeds according to a local thermodynamic equilibrium, while thickness of layers depends on kinetic conditions …

On-Demand Generation Of Dark Soliton Trains In Bose-Einstein Condensates, A. Romero-Ros, Garyfallia C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis, B. Prinari, G. Biondini, P. Schmelcher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Matter-wave interference mechanisms in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates that allow for the controlled generation of dark soliton trains upon choosing suitable box-type initial configurations are described. First, the direct scattering problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions and general box-type initial configurations is discussed, and expressions for the discrete spectrum corresponding to the dark soliton excitations generated by the dynamics are obtained. It is found that the size of the initial box directly affects the number, size and velocity of the solitons, while the initial phase determines the parity of the solutions. The analytical results obtained for …

New Particle Formation In The Remote Marine Boundary Layer, Guangjie Zheng, Yang Wang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Marine low clouds play an important role in the climate system, and their properties are sensitive to cloud condensation nuclei concentrations. While new particle formation represents a major source of cloud condensation nuclei globally, the prevailing view is that new particle formation rarely occurs in remote marine boundary layer over open oceans. Here we present evidence of the regular and frequent occurrence of new particle formation in the upper part of remote marine boundary layer following cold front passages. The new particle formation is facilitated by a combination of efficient removal of existing particles by precipitation, cold air temperatures, vertical …

This paper presents a modeling and uncertainty quantification (UQ) study of the photoelectron sheath near the lunar surface. A fully kinetic 3-D finite-difference (FD) particle-in-cell (PIC) code is utilized to simulate the plasma interaction near the lunar surface and the resulting photoelectron sheath. For the uncertainty quantification analysis, this FD-PIC code is treated as a black box providing high-fidelity quantities of interest, which are also used to construct efficient reduced-order models to perform UQ analysis. 1-D configuration is chosen to present the analytic sheath solution as well as to demonstrate the procedure and capability of the UQ analysis.
