Disaggregation Of Nanodiamond Particles, Vadym Mochalin, Atsushi Kume, Yoshihiro Inamoto, Masumi Hashimoto

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods for disaggregating nanodiamond clusters, for example, by using sonication to break apart nanodiamond aggregates in an aqueous slurry having an alkaline pH. Compositions, such as aqueous nanodiamond dispersions and dry particulate compositions can be produced using these methods.

Carbonaceous (e.g., limestone) and aluminosilicate (e.g., calcined clay) mineral additives are routinely used to partially replace ordinary portland cement in concrete to alleviate its energy impact and carbon footprint. These mineral additives—depending on their physicochemical characteristics—alter the hydration behavior of cement; which, in turn, affects the evolution of microstructure of concrete, as well as the development of its properties (e.g., compressive strength). Numerical, reaction-kinetics models—e.g., phase boundary nucleation-and-growth models; which are based partly on theoretically-derived kinetic mechanisms, and partly on assumptions—are unable to produce a priori prediction of hydration kinetics of cement; especially in multicomponent systems, wherein chemical interactions among …

High-Temperature Stable Fbgs Fabricated By A Point-By-Point Femtosecond Laser Inscription For Multi-Parameter Sensing, Chen Zhu, Dinesh Alla, Jie Huang Feb 2021

High-Temperature Stable Fbgs Fabricated By A Point-By-Point Femtosecond Laser Inscription For Multi-Parameter Sensing, Chen Zhu, Dinesh Alla, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A high-temperature resistant fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with pronounced cladding modes is fabricated using a simple, fast, and flexible point-by-point femtosecond laser inscription. Cladding modes of different orders exhibit various sensitivities to changes in refractive index of the surrounding medium and temperature, while the Bragg wavelength is only dependent on the ambient temperature. By combining the resonance of cladding modes and the Bragg resonance, measurement of variations of temperature and surrounding refractive index can be achieved. Survivability of the cladding modes and the core mode in the fabricated FBG at elevated temperatures up to 1000°C is demonstrated.

The cobalt-seleno-based coordination complex, [Co{(SePiPr2)2N}2], is reported with respect to its catalytic activity in oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER, respectively) in alkaline solutions. An overpotential of 320 and 630 mV was required to achieve 10 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. The overpotential for OER of this CoSe4-containing complex is one of the lowest that has been observed until now for molecular cobalt(II) systems, under the reported conditions. In addition, this cobalt-seleno-based complex exhibits a high mass activity (14.15 A g-1) and …

Simultaneous Experimental Evaluation Of Pulse Shape And Deadtime Phenomenon Of Gm Detector, Bader Almutairi, Syed B. Alam, Cameron S. Goodwin, Shoaib Usman, Tayfun Akyurek Feb 2021

Simultaneous Experimental Evaluation Of Pulse Shape And Deadtime Phenomenon Of Gm Detector, Bader Almutairi, Syed B. Alam, Cameron S. Goodwin, Shoaib Usman, Tayfun Akyurek

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Analysis of several pulse shape properties generated by a Geiger Mueller (GM) detector and its dependence on applied voltage was performed. The two-source method was utilized to measure deadtime while simultaneously capturing pulse shape parameters on an oscilloscope. A wide range of operating voltages (600-1200 V) beyond the recommended operating voltage of 900 V was investigated using three radioactive sources (204Tl, 137Cs, 22Na). This study investigates the relationship between operating voltage, pulse shape properties, and deadtime of the detector. Based on the data, it is found that deadtime decreases with increasing voltage from 600 to 650 …

Noise Optimizes Super-Turing Computation In Recurrent Neural Networks, Emmett Redd, Steven Senger, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper explores the benefit of added noise in increasing the computational complexity of digital recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The physically accepted model of the universe imposes rational number, stochastic limits on all calculations. An analog RNN with those limits calculates at the super-Turing complexity level BPP/log∗. In this paper, we demonstrate how noise aids digital RNNs in attaining super-Turing operation similar to analog RNNs. We investigate moving limited-precision systems from not being chaotic at small amounts of noise, through consistency with chaos, to overwhelming it at large amounts of noise. A Kolmogorov-complexity-based proof shows that an infinite computational class …

We have shown that nitric oxide limits ataxia-telangiectasia mutated signaling by inhibiting mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in a β-cell selective manner. In this study, we examined the actions of nitric oxide on a second DNA damage response transducer kinase, ataxia-telangiectasia and Rad3- related protein (ATR). In β-cells and non–β-cells, nitric oxide activates ATR signaling by inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase; however, when produced at inducible nitric oxide synthase– derived (low micromolar) levels, nitric oxide impairs ATR signaling in a β-cell selective manner. The inhibitory actions of nitric oxide are associated with impaired mitochondrial oxidative metabolism and lack of glycolytic compensation that result in …

High-Precision U-Pb Age Constraints On The Permian Floral Turnovers, Paleoclimate Change, And Tectonics Of The North China Block, Qiong Wu, Jahandar Ramezani, Hua Zhang, Jun Wang, Wan Yang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Permian marine-terrestrial system of the North China block provides an exceptional window into the evolution of northern temperate ecosystems during the critical transition from icehouse to greenhouse following the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA). Despite many studies on its rich hydrocarbon reserves and climate-sensitive fossil flora, uncertain temporal constraints and correlations have hampered a thorough understanding of the records of geologic, biologic, and climatic change from the North China block. We present a new chronostratigraphy based on high-precision U-Pb chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) geochronology of tuffs from a near-complete latest Carboniferous-Permian succession in North China. The …
