Fully-Kinetic Particle-In-Cell Simulations Of Photoelectron Sheath On Uneven Lunar Surface, Jianxun Zhao, Xinpeng Wei, Xiaoming He, Daoru Frank Han, Xiaoping Du

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a modeling and simulation study of the photoelectron sheath near uneven lunar surface. A fully kinetic 3-D finite-difference (FD) particle-in-cell (PIC) code is utilized to simulate the plasma interaction with local uneven surface terrain on the lunar surface in 2-D photoelectron sheaths. The code is first validated using a 1-D plasma charging and sheath problem by comparing with a semi-analytic solution. Good agreement is obtained. The 2-D FD-PIC simulations present the distributions of electric potential and charged species densities near the uneven lunar surface. It shows that the surface potential is highly influenced by the exposure to …

Dynamics Of A Pair Of Paramagnetic Janus Particles Under A Uniform Magnetic Field And Simple Shear Flow, Christopher Sobecki, Jie Zhang, Cheng Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We numerically investigate the dynamics of a pair of circular Janus microparticles immersed in a Newtonian fluid under a simple shear flow and a uniform magnetic field by direct numerical simulation. Using the COMSOL software, we applied the finite element method, based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, and analyzed the dynamics of two anisotropic particles (i.e., one-half is paramagnetic, and the other is non-magnetic) due to the center-to-center distance, magnetic field strength, initial particle orientation, and configuration. This article considers two configurations: the LR-configuration (magnetic material is on the left side of the first particle and on the right side …

Collisional Excitation Of Interstellar Pn By H₂: New Interaction Potential And Scattering Calculations, Benjamin Desrousseaux, Ernesto Quintas-Sánchez, Richard Dawes, Sarantos Marinakis, François Lique

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rotational excitation of interstellar PN molecules induced by collisions with H2 is investigated. We present the first ab initio four-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for the PN-H2 van der Waals system. The PES was obtained using an explicitly correlated coupled cluster approach with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)-F12b]. The method of interpolating moving least squares was used to construct an analytical PES from these data. The equilibrium structure of the complex was found to be linear, with H2 aligned at the N end of the PN molecule, at an intermolecular separation of 4.2 Å. The …

Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) is the most abundant type of glycoglycerolipid found in the plant cell membrane and mostly in the chloroplast thylakoid membrane. The amphiphilic nature of MGDG is attractive in pharmaceutical fields for interaction with other biological molecules and hence exerting therapeutic anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of cyanobacteria derived MGDG to inhibit breast cancer cell growth. MGDG was extracted from a cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 followed by a subsequent fractionation by column chromatographic technique. The purity and molecular structure of MGDG were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analysis. …

Chirality causes symmetry breaks in a large variety of natural phenomena ranging from particlephysics to biochemistry. We investigate one of the simplest conceivable chiral systems, a laser-excited, oriented, effective one-electron Li target. Prepared in a polarized p state with |m|= 1 in an optical trap, the atoms are exposed to co- and counterrotating circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses. For a field frequency near the excitation energy of the oriented initial state, a strongcircular dichroism is observed and the photoelectron energies are significantly affected by the helicity-dependent Autler-Townes splitting. Besides its fundamental relevance, this system is suited to create spin-polarized electron …

Biochemical Characterization Of The Two-Component Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenase Involved In Valanimycin Biosynthesis, Hao Li, Benedicta Forson, Meital Eckshtain-Levi, Hannah Valentino, Julia S. Martín Del Campo, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The flavin reductase (FRED) and isobutyl amine N-hydroxylase (IBAH) from Streptomyces viridifaciens constitute a two-component, flavin-dependent monooxygenase system that catalyzes the first step in valanimycin biosynthesis. FRED is an oxidoreductase that provides the reduced flavin to IBAH, which then catalyzes the hydroxylation of isobutyl amine (IBA) to isobutyl hydroxylamine (IBHA). In this work, we used several complementary methods to investigate FAD binding, steady-state and rapid reaction kinetics, and enzyme-enzyme interactions in the FRED: IBAH system. The affinity of FRED for FADox is higher than its affinity for FADred, consistent with its function as a flavin reductase. Conversely, IBAH binds FADred …

Numerous missions planned for the next decade are likely to target a handful of small sites of interest on the Moon's surface, creating risks of crowding and interference at these locations. The Moon presents finite and scarce areas with rare topography or concentrations of resources of special value. Locations of interest to science, notably for astronomy, include the Peaks of Eternal Light, the coldest of the cold traps and smooth areas on the far side. Regions richest in physical resources could also be uniquely suited to settlement and commerce. Such sites of interest are both few and small. Typically, there …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, a novel Q-learning scheduling method for the current controller of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is investigated. The Q-learning algorithm is a class of reinforcement learning approaches that can find the best forward-in-time solution of a linear control problem. An augmented system is constructed based on the reference current signal and the SRM model to allow for solving the algebraic Riccati equation of the current-tracking problem. This article introduces a new scheduled-Q-learning algorithm that utilizes a table of Q-cores that lies on the nonlinear surface of an SRM model without involving any information about the model …

A Population Dynamics Tipping Point For Aging As A Cause Of Adult Death, Andrea Scharf Jan 2021

A Population Dynamics Tipping Point For Aging As A Cause Of Adult Death, Andrea Scharf

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Populations are a fundamental level of biological organization that poses major challenges for analysis. Individual traits that influence development, diapause, reproduction, aging, and lifespan interact in complex ways to determine birth and death. Birth and death drive population dynamics and determine whether a population survives or is doomed for extinction. However, we lack a deep understanding of the relationships between individual traits and population dynamics, a major challenge in the emerging field of ecology-development (eco-devo). Here we establish a laboratory ecosystem using the model organism C. elegans and a computational simulation that realistically models the laboratory ecosystem. We used these …

Stokes-Darcy System, Small-Darcy-Number Behaviour And Related Interfacial Conditions, Wenqi Lyu, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that the Stokes-Darcy system, which governs flows through adjacent porous and pure-fluid domains in the two-domain approach without forced filtration, can be recovered from the Helmholtz minimal dissipation principle. While the continuity of normal velocity across the interface is imposed explicitly for mass conservation, only the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones (BJSJ) interface boundary condition is imposed implicitly, and the balance of the normal-force interface boundary condition appears naturally in the variational process. This set of interface boundary conditions is well-accepted in the mathematics community. We show that these interfacial boundary conditions, at the physically important small-Darcy-number regime, are consistent with continuity …

Lanchester's Equations And Cyberwarfare, George Markowsky, Linda Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In his classic book Aircraft in Warfare, F. W. Lanchester discussed different types of warfare and presented equations, called the Lanchester equations, that can be used to model the results of battles between two forces of different sizes or capabilities. This paper introduces the Lanchester equations and provides a theoretical discussion leading to an analysis of the relative value of increasing the effectiveness of military assets vs. increasing the quantity of those assets. In particular, we show that increasing the effectiveness contributes only linearly to the power of a combatant, but increasing the quantity contributes quadratically. This paper also presents …

Feasibility study of burn-up analysis and monitoring using delayed fast neutrons was investigated at Missouri University of Science and Technology Reactor (MSTR). Burnt and fresh fuel elements were used to collect delayed fast neutron data for different power levels. Total reactivity varied depending on the burn-up rate of fuel elements for each core configuration. The regulating rod worth was 2.07E-04 Δk/k/in and 1.95E-04 Δk/k/in for T121 and T122 core configurations at 11 inch, respectively. Delayed fast neutron spectrum of F1 (burnt) and F16 (fresh) fuel elements were analyzed further, and a strong correlation was observed between delayed fast neutron emission …

Multimodal Learning For Hateful Memes Detection, Yi Zhou, Zhenhao Chen, Huiyuan Yang Jan 2021

Multimodal Learning For Hateful Memes Detection, Yi Zhou, Zhenhao Chen, Huiyuan Yang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Memes are used for spreading ideas through social networks. Although most memes are created for humor, some memes become hateful under the combination of pictures and text. Automatically detecting hateful memes can help reduce their harmful social impact. Compared to the conventional multimodal tasks, where the visual and textual information is semantically aligned, hateful memes detection is a more challenging task since the image and text in memes are weakly aligned or even irrelevant. Thus, it requires the model to have a deep understanding of the content and perform reasoning over multiple modalities. This paper focuses on multimodal hateful memes …

Efficient Route Selection For Drone-Based Delivery Under Time-Varying Dynamics, Arindam Khanda, Federico Coro, Francesco Betti Sorbelli, Cristina M. Pinotti, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of drones can be a valuable solution for the problem of delivering goods for many reasons. In fact, they can be efficiently employed in time-critical situations when there is a traffic jam on the roads, to serve customers in hard-to-reach places, or simply to expand the business. However, due to limited battery capacities and the fact that drones can serve a single customer at a time, a drone-based delivery system (DBDS) aims to minimize the drones' energy usage for completing a route from the depot to the customer and go back to the depot for new deliveries. In …

Exploring Autoencoder-Based Error-Bounded Compression For Scientific Data, Jinyang Liu, Sheng Di, Kai Zhao, Sian Jin, Dingwen Tao, Xin Liang, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Error-bounded lossy compression is becoming an indispensable technique for the success of today's scientific projects with vast volumes of data produced during the simulations or instrument data acquisitions. Not only can it significantly reduce data size, but it also can control the compression errors based on user-specified error bounds. Autoencoder (AE) models have been widely used in image compression, but few AE-based compression approaches support error-bounding features, which are highly required by scientific applications. To address this issue, we explore using convolutional autoencoders to improve error-bounded lossy compression for scientific data, with the following three key contributions. (1) We provide …

An Experimental Study Investigating The Impact Of Miscible And Immiscible Nitrogen Injection On Asphaltene Instability In Nano Shale Pore Structure, Mukhtar Elturki, Abdulmohsin Imqam

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Miscible gas injection has become the most used enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method in the oil and gas industry. The deposition and precipitation of asphaltene during the gas injection process is one of the problems during the oil production process. The asphaltene can deposit and plug the pores, which reduces the permeability in a reservoir; thus, decreasing the oil recovery and increasing the production costs. This research investigates the nitrogen (N2) miscible and immiscible pressure injections on asphaltene instability in shale pore structures. First, a slim tube was used to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of N2 to ensure …

Detection Dns Tunneling Botnets, Bohdan Savenko, Sergii Lysenko, Kira Bobrovnikova, Oleg Savenko, George Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Botnets are often used in cyberattacks on network services and individual users, so the ability to detect botnets is very important. Botnets use DNS tunneling to send malicious command-and-control (CC) commands to victims' hosts. Unfortunately, DNS tunneling attacks are very hard to detect. The paper presents a new approach for DNS tunneling botnet detection, which considers all the features and architectural characteristics of botnets. The technique described in this paper is highly efficient at detecting DNS tunneling attacks.

Your 'Attention' Deserves Attention: A Self-Diversified Multi-Channel Attention For Facial Action Analysis, Xiaotian Li, Zhihua Li, Huiyuan Yang, Geran Zhao, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Visual attention has been extensively studied for learning fine-grained features in both facial expression recognition (FER) and Action Unit (AU) detection. A broad range of previous research has explored how to use attention modules to localize detailed facial parts (e, g. facial action units), learn discriminative features, and learn inter-class correlation. However, few related works pay attention to the robustness of the attention module itself. Through experiments, we found neural attention maps initialized with different feature maps yield diverse representations when learning to attend the identical Region of Interest (ROI). In other words, similar to general feature learning, the representational …

Improving Lossy Compression For Sz By Exploring The Best-Fit Lossless Compression Techniques, Jinyang Liu, Sihuan Li, Sheng Di, Xin Liang, Kai Zhao, Dingwen Tao, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the past decades, various lossy compressors have been studied broadly due to the ever-increasing volume of data being produced by today's scientific applications. SZ has been one of the best error-bounded lossy compressors ever raised, and it has a flexible framework that includes four adjustable steps: prediction, quantization, variable-length encoding, and lossless compression. In this paper, we improve the lossy compression performances of the SZ compression model by exploring different existing lossless compression techniques using the Squash data compression benchmark. Specifically, we first characterize the bytes outputted by the first three steps in SZ, then we investigate the best …

Connectionless Edge-Cache Servers For Reducing Cellular Bandwidth Usage In Vehicular Networks, Rui Wang, Jayanthi Rao, Ce Zhou, Subir Biswas

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel caching mechanism based on Connectionless Edge Cache Servers in vehicular networks. The goal is to intelligently cache content within the vehicles and the edge servers so that majority of the vehiclerequested content can be obtained from those caches, thus minimizing the amount of cellular network usage needed for fetching content from a central server. A notable feature of the cache servers in this work is that they do not have backhaul connectivity. This makes the connectionless servers to be relatively less expensive compared to the usual Roadside Service Units (RSUs), and potentially moveable in response …

Lattice-Based Technique To Visualize And Compare Regional Terrorism Using The Global Terrorism Database, Linda Markowsky, George Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Order-theoretic lattices and their visualizations are proposed as a means of exploring and analyzing databases. The max-complete lattice is formed and the significance of lattice nodes and of the top node are demonstrated. These novel visualizations serve as a useful complement to well-known charting techniques such as bar charts and may extend the knowledge gained from critical databases. The Carver2 dataset is used as an illustrative example, highlighting the formation of the max-complete lattice from the original dataset and the computational advantage provided by compressing the lattice using only its irreducible elements. Regional information from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), …
