Seismic Anisotropy And Mantle Deformation Beneath The Central Sunda Plate, Wenkai Song, Youqiang Yu, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Yifang Fu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The central Sunda plate, which forms the core of Southeast Asia, has been extensively studied based on analyses of data mainly from surface geological observations. In contrast, largely due to the limited coverage by seismic stations in the area, a number of key issues associated with mantle structure and dynamics remain enigmatic. These can possibly be constrained by investigating seismic azimuthal anisotropy in the upper mantle. Here we employ the shear wave splitting technique on three P-to-S converted phases from the core-mantle boundary (PKS, SKKS, and SKS) recorded by 11 stations to systematically explore the spatial variation of azimuthal anisotropy …

Impact Of Multiple Waves Of Covid-19 On Healthcare Networks In The United States, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam N. Mahmoud Mar 2021

Impact Of Multiple Waves Of Covid-19 On Healthcare Networks In The United States, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam N. Mahmoud

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The risk of overwhelming hospitals from multiple waves of COVID-19 is yet to be quantified. Here, we investigate the impact of different scenarios of releasing strong measures implemented around the U.S. on COVID-19 hospitalized cases and the risk of overwhelming the hospitals while considering resources at the county level. We show that multiple waves might cause an unprecedented impact on the hospitals if an increasing number of the population becomes susceptible and/or if the various protective measures are discontinued. Furthermore, we explore the ability of different mitigation strategies in providing considerable relief to hospitals. The results can help planners, policymakers, …

Fiber Optic Sensor Embedded Smart Helmet For Real-Time Impact Sensing And Analysis Through Machine Learning, Yiyang Zhuang, Qingbo Yang, Taihao Han, Ryan O'Malley, Aditya Kumar, Rex E. Gerald Ii, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) strongly associates with chronic neurodegenerative impairments such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild cognitive impairment. Early detection of concussive events would significantly enhance the understanding of head injuries and provide better guidance for urgent diagnoses and the best clinical practices for achieving full recovery. New method: A smart helmet was developed with a single embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for real-time sensing of blunt-force impact events to helmets. The transient signals provide both magnitude and directional information about the impact event, and the data can be used for training machine learning (ML) …

Conventional Immunomarkers Stain A Fraction Of Astrocytes In Vitro: A Comparison Of Rat Cortical And Spinal Cord Astrocytes In Naïve And Stimulated Cultures, Bailey Balouch, Jessica L. Funnell, Alexis M. Ziemba, Devan L. Puhl, Kathy Lin, Manoj K. Gottipati, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Astrocytes are responsible for a wide variety of essential functions throughout the central nervous system. The protein markers glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), glutamate aspartate transporter (GLAST), glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1), glutamine synthetase (GS), 10-formyltetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (ALDH1L1), and the transcription factor SOX9 are routinely used to label astrocytes in primary rodent cultures. However, GLAST, GLT-1, GS, and SOX9 are also produced by microglia and oligodendrocytes and GFAP, GLAST, GLT-1, and GS production levels are affected by astrocyte phenotypic changes associated with reactive astrogliosis. No group has performed a comprehensive immunocytochemical evaluation to quantify the percentage of cells labeled by these markers …

Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis With Second-Order Reliability Method, Hao Wu, Zhangli Hu, Xiaoping Du Mar 2021

Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis With Second-Order Reliability Method, Hao Wu, Zhangli Hu, Xiaoping Du

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

System reliability is quantified by the probability that a system performs its intended function in a period of time without failures. System reliability can be predicted if all the limit-state functions of the components of the system are available, and such a prediction is usually time consuming. This work develops a time-dependent system reliability method that is extended from the component time-dependent reliability method using the envelope method and second-order reliability method. The proposed method is efficient and is intended for series systems with limit-state functions whose input variables include random variables and time. The component reliability is estimated by …

Floating Gate Schottky Junction Solar Cells With Improved Output Power, Amirhossein Ghods, Vishal Saravade, Andrew Woode, Corey Lerner, Chuanle Zhou, Ian T. Ferguson Mar 2021

Floating Gate Schottky Junction Solar Cells With Improved Output Power, Amirhossein Ghods, Vishal Saravade, Andrew Woode, Corey Lerner, Chuanle Zhou, Ian T. Ferguson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, the concept of floating gate Schottky junction (FGSJ) solar cell with improved photovoltaic properties, compared to those of the conventional Schottky junction solar cell, is proposed. The floating gate junction is electrically isolated from the current collection junction in order to prevent reduction in the barrier height at the floating gate contact from load voltage. The unaffected barrier height at the floating gate junction leads to a more effective separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, and therefore, a better photovoltaic response. Single junction FGSJ solar cells based on n-type GaAs with different doping concentration levels and gate contact …

High-Throughput Screen For Inhibitors Of The Type Iv Pilus Assembly Atpase Pilb, Keane J. Dye, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Pablo Sobrado, Zhaomin Yang Mar 2021

High-Throughput Screen For Inhibitors Of The Type Iv Pilus Assembly Atpase Pilb, Keane J. Dye, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Pablo Sobrado, Zhaomin Yang

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The bacterial type IV pilus (T4P) is a prominent virulence factor in many significant human pathogens, some of which have become increasingly antibiotic resistant. Antivirulence chemotherapeutics are considered a promising alternative to antibiotics because they target the disease process instead of bacterial viability. However, a roadblock to the discovery of anti-T4P compounds is the lack of a high throughput screen (HTS) that can be implemented relatively easily and economically. Here, we describe the first HTS for the identification of inhibitors specifically against the T4P assembly ATPase PilB in vitro. Chloracidobacterium thermophilum PilB (CtPilB) had been demonstrated to have robust ATPase …

Spectral Induced Polarization Study On Enzyme Induced Carbonate Precipitations: Influences Of Size And Content On Stiffness Of A Fine Sand, Bate Bate, Junnan Cao, Chi Zhang, Na Hao Mar 2021

Spectral Induced Polarization Study On Enzyme Induced Carbonate Precipitations: Influences Of Size And Content On Stiffness Of A Fine Sand, Bate Bate, Junnan Cao, Chi Zhang, Na Hao

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heterogeneity in either chemically or microbiologically induced carbonate-based ground improvement methods is a major obstacle in engineering application. Spectral induced polarization (SIP), an innovative and nondestructive method, which has demonstrated promise in monitoring microbial activity, was used in this study to monitor enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP). The complex conductivities, together with the shear wave velocities (Vs), of an EICP modified sand were monitored using a self-developed spectral induced polarization–bender element column. The mean precipitate size was calculated by relaxation time (τ) and the Schwarz equation. The precipitate contents were calculated by cumulative gamma distribution function on the global polarization …

Achieving Superlubricity With 2d Transition Metal Carbides (Mxenes) And Mxene/Graphene Coatings, S. Huang, K. C. Mutyala, A. V. Sumant, Vadym Mochalin Mar 2021

Achieving Superlubricity With 2d Transition Metal Carbides (Mxenes) And Mxene/Graphene Coatings, S. Huang, K. C. Mutyala, A. V. Sumant, Vadym Mochalin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have demonstrated unique friction and antiwear properties unmatched by their bulk (3D) counterparts. A relatively new, large and quickly growing family of two-dimensional early transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) present a great potential in different applications. There is a growing interest in understanding the mechanical and tribological properties of MXenes, however, no report of MXene superlubricity in a solid lubrication process at the macroscale has been presented. Here we investigate the tribological properties of two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2) MXene deposited on SiO2-coated silicon (Si) substrates subjected to wear by sliding …

The Notion Of A Polaron, Originally Introduced In The Context Of Electrons In Ionic Lattices, Helps Us To Understand How A Quantum Impurity Behaves When Being Immersed In And Interacting With A Many-Body Background. We Discuss The Impact Of The Impurities On The Medium Particles By Considering Feedback Effects From Polarons That Can Be Realized In Ultracold Quantum Gas Experiments. In Particular, We Exemplify The Modifications Of The Medium In The Presence Of Either Fermi Or Bose Polarons. Regarding Fermi Polarons We Present A Corresponding Many-Body Diagrammatic Approach Operating At Finite Temperatures And Discuss How Mediated Two-And Three-Body Interactions Are …

Coded Caching In The Presence Of A Wire And A Cache Tapping Adversary Of Type Ii, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener Mar 2021

Coded Caching In The Presence Of A Wire And A Cache Tapping Adversary Of Type Ii, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces the notion of cache-tapping into the information theoretic models of coded caching. The wiretap channel II in the presence of multiple receivers equipped with fixed-size cache memories, and an adversary which selects symbols to tap into from cache placement and/or delivery is introduced. The legitimate terminals know neither whether placement, delivery, or both are tapped, nor the positions in which they are tapped. Only the size of the overall tapped set is known. For two receivers and two files, the strong secrecy capacity–the maximum achievable file rate while keeping the overall library strongly secure–is identified. Lower and …

Adaptive Kriging Method For Uncertainty Quantification Of The Photoelectron Sheath And Dust Levitation On The Lunar Surface, Xinpeng Wei, Jianxun Zhao, Xiaoming He, Zhen Hu, Xiaoping Du, Daoru Han

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an adaptive Kriging based method to perform uncertainty quantification (UQ) of the photoelectron sheath and dust levitation on the lunar surface. The objective of this study is to identify the upper and lower bounds of the electric potential and that of dust levitation height, given the intervals of model parameters in the one-dimensional (1D) photoelectron sheath model. To improve the calculation efficiency, we employ the widely used adaptive Kriging method (AKM). A task-oriented learning function and a stopping criterion are developed to train the Kriging model and customize the AKM. Experiment analysis shows that the proposed AKM …

Final Report - Autonomous Wall-Climbing Robots For Inspection And Maintenance Of Concrete Bridges, Jizhong Xiao, Liang Yang, Jinglun Feng, Ejup Hoxha Feb 2021

Final Report - Autonomous Wall-Climbing Robots For Inspection And Maintenance Of Concrete Bridges, Jizhong Xiao, Liang Yang, Jinglun Feng, Ejup Hoxha

Project AS-3

This project developed wall-climbing robots to carry non-destructive evaluation (NDE) devices for automatic data collection and surface/subsurface defect detection in concrete structures. By using simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), the robots can be located to allow for incremental 3D model reconstruction. An image dataset with pixel-level accuracy is collected and labeled to train a deep neural network (i.e., InspectionNet) with 12,000 iterations for each defect type. A ground penetrating radar (GPR)-based subsurface object detection method is proposed to implement visual inertial fusion for the estimation of the GPR pose, use a deep neural network module (i.e., DepthNet) to extract hyperbola …

Conservation Risks And Benefits Of Establishing Monarch Butterfly (Danaus Plexippus) Breeding Habitats Close To Maize And Soybean Fields In The North Central United States: A Landscape-Scale Analysis Of The Impact Of Foliar Insecticide On Nonmigratory Monarch Butterfly Populations, Tyler J. Grant, Niranjana Krishnan, Steven P. Bradbury

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Establishing habitat in agricultural landscapes of the north central United States is critical to reversing the decline of North America's eastern monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) population. Insecticide use could create population sinks and threaten recovery. Discouraging habitat establishment within a 38-m zone around crop fields is a suggested risk mitigation measure. In Story County, Iowa, United States, this mitigation would discourage habitat establishment in 84% of roadsides and 38% of noncrop land. It is unclear if the conservation benefits from establishing habitat close to crop fields outweigh suppression of population growth owing to insecticide exposure. Consequently, monarch conservation …

Ft-Cnn: Algorithm-Based Fault Tolerance For Convolutional Neural Networks, Kai Zhao, Sheng Di, Sihuan Li, Xin Liang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are becoming more and more important for solving challenging and critical problems in many fields. CNN inference applications have been deployed in safety-critical systems, which may suffer from soft errors caused by high-energy particles, high temperature, or abnormal voltage. Of critical importance is ensuring the stability of the CNN inference process against soft errors. Traditional fault tolerance methods are not suitable for CNN inference because error-correcting code is unable to protect computational components, instruction duplication techniques incur high overhead, and existing algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT) techniques cannot protect all convolution implementations. In this paper, we focus …
