Group Delay Manipulation In A Passive Microwave-Photonic Fiber Optic Mach–Zehnder Interferometer, Chen Zhu, Jianguo Wang, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional slow and fast light (SFL) systems are based on active or nonlinear media or photonic band-gap systems. Radiofrequency (RF) interferometric systems were recently explored for sustaining fast and slow light, owing to their simple structures and passive operation. This Letter introduces a simple, effective, and efficient SFL system based on a linear and passive microwave-photonic (MWP) fiber optic Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). By optically tuning the light transmission ratio of the two fiber beams of the MZI (i.e., the optical carrier), we demonstrate that both delay and advancement of a RF signal (i.e., the envelope signal) can be realized. The …

Laser Ablation Of Cfrp Surfaces For Improving The Strength Of Bonded Scarf Composite Joints, Jassem Alyousef, Arief Yudhanto, Ran Tao, Gilles Lubineau Sep 2022

Laser Ablation Of Cfrp Surfaces For Improving The Strength Of Bonded Scarf Composite Joints, Jassem Alyousef, Arief Yudhanto, Ran Tao, Gilles Lubineau

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Repairing damaged composite parts using scarf technique requires a careful selection of treatment methods for composite surface. Laser treatment is one of the emerging techniques to treat the milled composite surface by unlocking various levels of morphological changes and, thus, optimizing joint strength. However, laser parameters, e.g., energy density (fluence), should be carefully determined to ensure the acceptable structural recovery. Here, the influence of CO2 laser with relatively high fluence (ablation effect) on the surface characteristics (roughness, morphology, wettability) and scarf joint strength with associated failure modes of unidirectional (UD) and quasi-isotropic (QI) carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates is studied. …

Understanding The Effect Of Sodium Polyphosphate On Improving The Chemical Stability Of Ti3c2tz Mxene In Water, Shuohan Huang, Varun Natu, Jingyi Tao, Yumin Xia, Vadym Mochalin, Michel W. Barsoum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Degradation of MXenes in aqueous environments severely limits the application and industrialization of this large family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Hydrolysis and oxidation are now considered as two main degradation mechanisms and while significant efforts have been directed to prolonging the shelf-life of MXenes, separating and studying their degradation mechanisms have lagged behind. Herein, gas analysis via gas chromatography and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of sodium polyphosphate, PP, on the degradation of Ti3C2Tz MXene. Transmission and scanning electron microscopies, as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopywere also used as complimentary techniques to …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

For CO2 storage in subsurface reservoirs, one of the most crucial requirements is the ability to remediate the leakage caused by the natural fractures or newly generated fractures due to the increasing pore pressure associated with CO2 injection. For CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), high conductivity features such as fractures and void space conduits can severely restrict the CO2 sweep efficiency. Polymer gels have been developed to plug the leakage and improve the sweep efficiency. This work evaluated a CO2 resistant branched self-healable preformed particle gel (CO2-BRPPG) for CO2 plugging purpose. This …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, polymer micro/nanogels which are re-crosslinked polymers with 3D networks, have attracted a lot of interest in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) field. In size of micro/nanometers, these gel particles are designed to be conformance control agents for in-depth fluid diversion, and various experimental research have been undertaken to investigate the possibilities of applying micro/nanogels in oilfield. However, it is still unclear that how to utilize micro/nanogels to their full potential in oilfield because the transport mechanisms and EOR mechanisms of micro/nanogels are not well studied currently. By reviewing experimental evaluations and corresponding results of micro/nanogels, including evaluation of …

Reliability Of Bridge Inspection Technologies, Glenn A. Washer

INSPIRE Archived Webinars

This presentation will discuss the reliability of inspection technologies used for the condition assessment of highway bridges. Data from condition assessments are critical to asset management and decision-making. The methodologies used to assess condition are usually subjective methods, such as visual inspections, that can vary as a result of human factors and differences in training and interpretation of inspection procedures. Nondestructive evaluation technologies (NDE) are implemented on a more limited basis and rely on indirect measurements to infer the presence of damage, and these assessments are affected by environmental factors, materials variability, and limitations in the interpretation of the resulting …

Ionic liquid pilocarpine analog [Pilo-OEG]Cl, the first-of-its-kind ionic liquid antiglaucoma drug candidate, is synthesized and reported. To synthesize [Pilo-OEG]Cl, pilocarpine was reacted with the oligo-polyethylene glycol chloride, 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethoxy] ethanol, to form an ionic liquid molecule with an imidazole cation and a chloride anion. The chemical structure of [Pilo-OEG]Cl was confirmed with 1H NMR spectroscopy. Compared with pilocarpine (Pilo) and pilocarpine hydrochloride (PiloHCl), [Pilo-OEG]Cl has improved structural stability according to pH measurements and LC-MS analysis. The corneal permeability coefficient of [Pilo-OEG]Cl is 2-fold higher than that of Pilo and 8-fold higher than that of PiloHCl. [Pilo-OEG]Cl does not show apparent toxicity …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recent breakthrough in wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has empowered wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) by facilitating stable and continuous energy supply to sensors through mobile chargers (MCs). A plethora of studies have been carried out over the last decade in this regard. However, no comprehensive survey exists to compile the state-of-the-art literature and provide insight into future research directions. To fill this gap, we put forward a detailed survey on mobile charging techniques (MCTs) in WRSNs. In particular, we first describe the network model, various WPT techniques with empirical models, system design issues and performance metrics concerning the …

Study Of Asymptotic Velocity In The Bondi–Hoyle Accretion Flows In The Domain Of Kerr And 4-D Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet Gravities, Orhan Donmez, Fatih Dogan, Tuba Sahin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding the physical structures of the accreted matter very close to a black hole in quasars and active galactic nucleus (AGN) is an important milestone to constrain the activities occurring in their centers. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effects of the asymptotic velocities on the physical structures of the accretion disk around the Kerr and Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet (EGB) rapidly rotating black holes. The Bondi–Hoyle accretion is considered with a falling gas towards the black hole in an upstream region of the computational domain. Shock cones are naturally formed in the downstream part of the flow around both black holes. …

Numerical Analysis Of A Second Order Ensemble Method For Evolutionary Magnetohydrodynamics Equations At Small Magnetic Reynolds Number, John Carter, Nan Jiang Sep 2022

Numerical Analysis Of A Second Order Ensemble Method For Evolutionary Magnetohydrodynamics Equations At Small Magnetic Reynolds Number, John Carter, Nan Jiang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study a second order ensemble method for fast computation of an ensemble of magnetohydrodynamics flows at small magnetic Reynolds number. Computing an ensemble of flow equations with different input parameters is a common procedure for uncertainty quantification in many engineering applications, for which the computational cost can be prohibitively expensive for nonlinear complex systems. We propose an ensemble algorithm that requires only solving one linear system with multiple right-hands instead of solving multiple different linear systems, which significantly reduces the computational cost and simulation time. Comprehensive stability and error analyses are presented proving conditional stability and second order in …

Compressed Sensing Based Low-Power Multi-View Video Coding And Transmission In Wireless Multi-Path Multi-Hop Networks, Nan Cen, Zhangyu Guan, Tommaso Melodia

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is increasingly being deployed for surveillance, monitoring and Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensing applications where a set of cameras capture and compress local images and then transmit the data to a remote controller. Such captured local images may also be compressed in a multi-view fashion to reduce the redundancy among overlapping views. In this paper, we present a novel paradigm for compressed-sensing-enabled multi-view coding and streaming in WMSN. We first propose a new encoding and decoding architecture for multi-view video systems based on Compressed Sensing (CS) principles, composed of cooperative sparsity-aware block-level rate-adaptive encoders, feedback channels and …

Some New Insights For Inferring Diapycnal (Irreversible) Diffusivity In Stably Stratified Turbulence, Amrapalli Garanaik, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

New insight for inferring diapycnal diffusivity in stably stratified turbulent flows is obtained based on physical scaling arguments and tested using high-resolution direct numerical simulation data. It is shown that the irreversible diapycnal diffusivity can be decomposed into a diapycnal length scale that represents an inner scale of turbulence and a diapycnal velocity scale. Furthermore, it is shown that the diapycnal length scale and velocity scale can be related to the measurable Ellison length scale (LE) that represents outer scale of turbulence and vertical turbulent velocity scale (w ′) through a turbulent Froude number scaling analysis. The turbulent Froude number …

Crustal Structure And Subsidence Mechanisms Of The Williston Basin: New Constraints From Receiver Function Imaging, Jianguo Song, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Muchen Sun, Youqiang Yu, Fansheng Kong, Kevin Mickus

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mechanisms responsible for the long-term subsidence of intracontinental basins such as the Williston Basin in North America remain enigmatic, partly due to the thick sedimentary layer commonly found in the basins that prevents reliably imaging the deep crustal and upper mantle structures using some of the most-commonly employed seismic methods such as receiver function analysis. In this study, we used receiver functions recorded by 274 USArray and other stations in the Williston Basin and adjacent areas to investigate the layered structure of the crust in the hydrocarbon-rich intracontinental basin. After the removal of strong reverberations on the receiver functions associated …

Be Smart, Save I/O: A Probabilistic Approach To Avoid Uncorrectable Errors In Storage Systems, Md Arifuzzaman, Masudul Bhuiyan, Mehmet Gumus, Engin Arslan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silent data corruption poses a significant risk to the integrity of data in storage systems. Although error correction codes (ECC) can recover the majority of such errors, a nonnegligible portion of them escape ECC, referred as uncorrectable errors (UEs). Despite being rare in nature, increasing scale of storage systems and fast-growing I/O rates decreased the mean time between UEs from months to hours. Yet, unlike disk failures, UEs are hard to predict with high precision, making it difficult to adopt proactive measures. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic approach to deploy UE mitigation strategies that can capture significant portion …

A Heuristic Approach To Predict The Tensile Strength Of A Non-Persistent Jointed Brazilian Disc Under Diametral Loading, Mostafa Asadizadeh, Nima Babanouri, Taghi Sherizadeh

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical response of rock bridges plays a key role in the stability of concrete and rock structures. In particular, the tensile failure of non-persistent discontinuities can result in their coalescence and the failure of rock or concrete engineering structures. The effect of non-persistent joint parameters on rock structures' failure under tensile mode has not been investigated by many researchers yet. Many non-persistent jointed Brazilian concrete discs are tested under diametral loading in this work, to study the influence of joint spacing, joint continuity factor, loading direction with regard to joint angle, and bridge angle on their tensile behavior. Heuristic …

Wettability Alteration Process At Pore-Scale During Engineered Waterflooding Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Yongqiang Chen, Ping Chang, Guang Xu, Quan Xie

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineered waterflooding modifies chemistry of injected brine to efficiently and environmentally friendly enhance oil recovery. The common practice of engineered waterflooding includes low salinity waterflooding (LSW) and carbonated waterflooding. Among these oil recovery methods, wettability alteration has been perceived as a critical physicochemical process for additional oil recovery. While extensive work has been conducted to characterize the wettability alteration, the existing theory cannot explain the conflict oil recovery between secondary mode (injecting engineered water at the very beginning of flooding) and tertiary mode (injecting engineered water after conventional waterflooding), where secondary engineered waterflooding always gives a greater incremental oil recovery …

Polymers and their composites are widely used for designing structures in aerospace, automotive, electronic, sport industries due to their lightweight, cost, and processing advantages. However, the surface of polymeric materials typically exhibits intrinsic deficiencies, limiting their durability and functionalities, e.g., low wear resistance, low thermal and electrical conductivity, low adhesion, low bioactivity, low reflectiveness, and weak photochemical resistance. Polymer metallization is an emerging concept that addresses these deficiencies by forming a metallic skin on polymeric surfaces. Herein, the working principles, recent advances, challenges, functional capabilities, and applications of the state-of-the-art polymer metallization methods in the fields of additive manufacturing, coating …

High solids loading silicon carbide (SiC)-based aqueous slurries containing only.5 wt. % organic additives were utilized to create specimens of various geometries via an extrusion-based additive manufacturing (AM) technique. Pressure less electric field-assisted sintering was performed to densify each specimen without deformation. The combination of these techniques produced parts with >98% relative density despite containing only 5 wt.% oxide sintering additives. After sintering, specimens contained only the α-SiC and yttrium aluminum perovskite phases. This suggests the evolution of a nonequilibrium yttrium aluminate phase, as well as transformation from β-SiC to α-SiC. The fabrication method presented in this work has advantages …

The projectors rescale the term overline {bf V} cdot i{k}_0{bf j} and right-hand side to guarantee that the solution is stable at very low frequency. The improved system is full rank without removing the singularity caused by charge neutrality. Compared to the EFIE with quasi-Helmholtz projectors, this letter presents a better convergence performance and takes less computational cost. The numerical results show that the solution of both scattering problems and circuit problems can ensure the accuracy in the low-frequency regime.
