Contact Process With Simultaneous Spatial And Temporal Disorder, Xuecheng Ye, Thomas Vojta
Contact Process With Simultaneous Spatial And Temporal Disorder, Xuecheng Ye, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study the absorbing-state phase transition in the one-dimensional contact process under the combined influence of spatial and temporal random disorders. We focus on situations in which the spatial and temporal disorders decouple. Couched in the language of epidemic spreading, this means that some spatial regions are, at all times, more favorable than others for infections, and some time periods are more favorable than others independent of spatial location. We employ a generalized Harris criterion to discuss the stability of the directed percolation universality class against such disorder. We then perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the critical behavior …
Sum Rules For Energy Deposition Eigenchannels In Scattering Systems, Alexey Yamilov, Nicholas Bender, Hui Cao
Sum Rules For Energy Deposition Eigenchannels In Scattering Systems, Alexey Yamilov, Nicholas Bender, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a random-scattering system, the deposition matrix maps the incident wavefront onto the internal field distribution across a target volume. The corresponding eigenchannels have been used to enhance the wave energy delivered to the target. Here, we find the sum rules for the eigenvalues and eigenchannels of the deposition matrix in any system geometry: including two- and three-dimensional scattering systems, as well as narrow waveguides and wide slabs. We derive a number of constraints on the eigenchannel intensity distributions inside the system as well as the corresponding eigenvalues. Our results are general and applicable to random systems of arbitrary scattering …

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the ionization dynamics of tetrahydrofuran induced by 250 eV electron impact in which the highest occupied molecular orbital is ionized leading to the stable parent ion. Experimentally a reaction microscope was used, covering nearly the entire 4π solid angle for the ejected slow electron. We present the triple-differential cross sections for the projectile scattering angles of θ1 = -10∘ as a function of the emission angle of the ejected electrons with energies of E2=10, 15, and 20 eV, i.e., for asymmetric energy sharing between the scattered and ejected electrons. The measured …

Thickening electrodes is one effective approach to increase active material content for higher energy and low-cost lithium-ion batteries, but limits in charge transport and huge mechanical stress generation result in poor performance and eventual cell failure. This paper reports a new electrode fabrication process, referred to as µ-casting, enabling ultrathick electrodes that address the trade-off between specific capacity and areal/volumetric capacity. The proposed µ-casting is based on a patterned blade, enabling facile fabrication of 3D electrode structures. The study reveals the governing properties of µ-casted ultrathick electrodes and how this simultaneously improves battery energy/power performance. The process facilitates a short …

Additive manufacturing of dense SiC parts was achieved via an extrusion-based process followed by electrical-field assisted pressure-less sintering. The aim of this research was to study the effect of the rheological behavior of SiC slurry on the printing process and quality, as well as the influence of 3D printing parameters on the dimensions of the extruded filament, which are directly related to the printing precision and quality. Different solid contents and dispersant- Darvan 821A concentrations were studied to optimize the viscosity, thixotropy and sedimentation rate of the slurry. The optimal slurry was composed of 77.5 wt% SiC, Y2O3 and Al2O3 …

This work reports a simple optical fiber Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor with ultra-high sensitivity for simultaneous measurement of the dual-parameter. The sensor is based on a D-shaped fiber with a nanolayer coating of Silver (Ag) and Hematite (α-Fe2O3). The Ag/α-Fe2O3 layer is deposited on the longitudinal surface of residual cladding, and a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is inscribed on the single-mode fiber (SMF) for temperature compensation. The α-Fe2O3 layer protects the Ag layer from oxidation and effectively enhances the surface plasmon wave while interacting with free electrons. Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling is employed to investigate the refractive index …

Characterizing And Modeling The Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Cyclic Behavior Of Unsaturated Soils Using Constant Water Content Oedometer And Direct Shear Tests, Beshoy Riad, Xiong Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most transportation infrastructures are constructed on compacted soils that are typically unsaturated above the groundwater table. The soils are subjected to cyclic traffic loadings and seasonal wetting–drying cycles. Although problems associated with unsaturated soils are ubiquitous in the US, coupled hydro-mechanical analysis is rarely included in the design/analysis of transportation geosystems. This can be attributed to two main reasons: (a) there are no simple devices/methods which can be used to rapidly characterize stress–strain behavior for unsaturated soils, and (b) there is a lack of a constitutive model to study coupled hydro-mechanical cyclic behavior for unsaturated soils in a consistent way. …

Benefits And Drawbacks Of Using Multiple Shrinkage Mitigating Strategies On Performance Of Fiber-Reinforced Mortar, Kamran Aghaee, Kamal Khayat
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Shrinkage mitigating strategies have been successfully used to prevent concrete cracking. Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficiency of shrinkage mitigating materials (SMM), such as expansive agent (EA), shrinkage reducing admixture (SRA), and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) on reducing shrinkage and cracking; however, few studies have addressed the limitations of using these materials. In addition, the mechanism of negative effect on microstructure and mechanical properties when these materials are used at high contents or in combinations is not well defined. This study investigates the effect of CaO-based EA, SRA, and SAP on compressive strength development, fiber pull-out strength, and shrinkage of fiber-reinforced …

Copper slag (CS), a by-product of copper smelting, is normally stockpiled, leading to wastes of resource and space as well as environment pollution. It has not been massively reutilized as a supplementary cementitious material in Portland cement due to its low reactivity. In the present study, CS is for the first time utilized as the base component to prepare an iron phosphate cement (IPC) by reacting with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) at room temperature. The influence of the raw materials mass ratio (CS/ADP) on the microstructure and performance of IPC pastes are investigated. It is found that the compressive strength …

A highly sensitive strain sensor based on tunable cascaded Fabry–Perot interferometers (FPIs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Cascaded FPIs consist of a sensing FPI and a reference FPI, which effectively generate the Vernier effect (VE). The sensing FPI comprises a hollow core fiber (HCF) segment sandwiched between single-mode fibers (SMFs), and the reference FPI consists of a tunable air reflector, which is constituted by a computer-programable fiber holding block to adjust the desired cavity length. The simulation results predict the dispersion characteristics of modes carried by HCF. The sensor's parameters are designed to correspond to a narrow bandwidth range, i.e., …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Cooperative Optimal Output Regulation Via Distributed Adaptive Internal Model, Weinan Gao, Mohammed Mynuddin, Donald C. Wunsch, Zhong Ping Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this article, a data-driven distributed control method is proposed to solve the cooperative optimal output regulation problem of leader-follower multiagent systems. Different from traditional studies on cooperative output regulation, a distributed adaptive internal model is originally developed, which includes a distributed internal model and a distributed observer to estimate the leader's dynamics. Without relying on the dynamics of multiagent systems, we have proposed two reinforcement learning algorithms, policy iteration and value iteration, to learn the optimal controller through online input and state data, and estimated values of the leader's state. By combining these methods, we have established a basis …

Distributed generation (DG) refers to small-scale generation resources that are located at or near end-consumers, such as photovoltaic (PV) solar systems. DG systems have become increasingly popular in recent years owing to their economic efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. However, the increasing adoption of DG is creating new obstacles for system operators due to the uncertainty in forecasting future demand. One concern is the possibility of facing a utility death spiral as a feedback loop between, on the one hand, the increasing adoption of DG and increasing electricity rates to cover generation and transmission overheads with, on the other hand, reduced …

Many rural US communities lack access to adequate broadband services. This paper draws on semi-structured interviews conducted in 2019 with 16 Regional Planning Commissions to uncover dynamics of how these intergovernmental organizations contribute to the deployment of broadband infrastructure in rural Missouri. The proposed framework integrates the decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Theory of Reasoned Goal Pursuit, and Stakeholder Theory. Many participants reported a low level of involvement in broadband infrastructure initiatives even though supporting infrastructure development to promote economic growth is one of the Regional Planning Commissions' primary goals. Regional Planning Commissions are highly influenced by four …

Modern EAF steelmaking employs scrap as its primary source of raw material. Different sources of scrap have varying levels of residuals, which can negatively influence product properties, performance, and surface quality. The presence of some residuals, such as Cu and Ni in controlled quantities, can also positively impact steel performance for some applications. It is also well known that interactions between residuals and alloying elements in steel can modify the structure of scale formed during slab reheating prior to hot rolling. These changes in the scale structure can influence scale removability. In this study, the effect of varying Cu concentrations …

The backscattering cross section of cylindrical and elliptical disk-shaped scatterers was investigated in this study, utilising a new numerical solution method called the relaxed hierarchical equivalent source algorithm (RHESA). The results were compared with the backscattering cross section of similar cases, using analytical method validation from literature. The objective of this research was to look into the possibility of replacing analytical methods with the RHESA in volume scattering calculations, and integrating it into modelling the backscattering of layers of dense media for microwave remote sensing in vegetation; as RHESA provides the freedom to model any shape of scatterer, as opposed …

Variation in the local thermal history during the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process in Additive Manufacturing (AM) can cause micropore defects, which add to the uncertainty of the mechanical properties (e.g., fatigue life, tensile strength) of the built materials. In-situ sensing has been proposed for monitoring the AM process to minimize defects, but successful minimization requires establishing a quantitative relationship between the sensing data and the porosity, which is particularly challenging with a large number of variables (e.g., laser speed, power, scan path, powder property). Physics-based modeling can simulate such an in-situ sensing-porosity relationship, but it is computationally costly. …

Emotions (e.g., Joy, Anger) are prevalent in daily software engineering (SE) activities, and are known to be significant indicators of work productivity (e.g., bug fixing efficiency). Recent studies have shown that directly applying general purpose emotion classification tools to SE corpora is not effective. Even within the SE domain, tool performance degrades significantly when trained on one communication channel and evaluated on another (e.g., Stack Overflow vs. GitHub comments). Retraining a tool with channel-specific data takes significant effort since manually annotating a large dataset of ground truth data is expensive. In this paper, we address this data scarcity problem by …

Delaying aging while prolonging health and lifespan is a major goal in aging research. One promising strategy is to focus on reducing negative interventions such as pollution and their accelerating effect on age-related degeneration and disease. Here, we used the short-lived model organism C. elegans to analyze whether two candidate pollutants corrupt general aging pathways. We show that the emergent pollutant silica nanoparticles (NPs) and the classic xenobiotic inorganic mercury reduce lifespan and cause a premature protein aggregation phenotype. Comparative mass spectrometry revealed that increased insolubility of proteins with important functions in proteostasis is a shared phenotype of intrinsic- and …

The employment of predictive techniques combining kinetic and thermodynamic analyses is the succinct solution to effectively control asphaltene precipitation during crude oil production. Although thermodynamic processes and conditions have been well studied in the literature, the effect of long-time kinetics on the key factors affecting the precipitation of asphaltenes was not critically studied. This work employed a model oil for asphaltene precipitation long-time kinetic observations. Filtration and confocal microscopy experimentations for time periods of 0-7200 min were utilized to study asphaltene yields and sizes at room and high temperatures (25, 50, and 70 °C), rotation speeds (60 and 150 rpm), …

Rapid growth in global energy consumption has raised concern on the environmental impacts such as ozone layer depletion and climate change. Enclosed space, such as commercial buildings, accounts for about 40% of global energy consumption and the demand is constantly increasing due to increasing population, urbanization, and economic development. The energy demands in the building sector calls for strategic measures to develop energy efficient technologies. This paper presents a strategy to decrease energy demands inside buildings by proposing a ventilation system which regulates the enclosed air quality resulting in reduced air conditioning. Electronic nematicity is rarely observed as an isolated instability of a correlated electron system. Instead, in iron pnictides and in certain cuprates and heavy-fermion materials, nematicity is intertwined with an underlying spin-stripe or charge-stripe state. As a result, random strain, ubiquitous in any real crystal, creates both random-field disorder for the nematic degrees of freedom and random-bond disorder for the spin or charge ones. Here, we put forward an Ashkin-Teller model with random Baxter fields to capture the dual role of random strain in nematic systems for which nematicity is a composite order arising from a stripe state. Using Monte …
