This article intends to address an online optimal adaptive regulation of nonlinear discrete-time systems in affine form and with partially uncertain dynamics using a multilayer neural network (MNN). The actor-critic framework estimates both the optimal control input and value function. Instantaneous control input error and temporal difference are used to tune the weights of the critic and actor networks, respectively. The selection of the basis functions and their derivatives are not required in the proposed approach. The state vector, critic, and actor NN weights are proven to be bounded using the Lyapunov method. Our approach can be extended to neural …

Inorganic nanopores occurring in the shale matrix have strong hydrophilicity and irreducible water (IW) film can be formed on the inner surface of the pores making gas flow mechanisms in the pores more complex. In this paper, the existence of irreducible water (IW) in inorganic pores is considered, and, based on the Knudsen number (K (Formula presented.)) correction in shale pores, a shale gas apparent permeability model of inorganic nano-pores is established. The effect of the K (Formula presented.) correction on the apparent permeability, the ratio of flow with pore radius and the effect of IW on the apparent permeability …

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), formed through the nonenzymatic reaction of reducing sugars with the side-chain amino groups of lysine or arginine of proteins, followed by further glycoxidation reactions under oxidative stress conditions, are involved in the onset and exacerbation of a variety of diseases, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) as well as in the secondary stages of traumatic brain injury (TBI). AGEs, in the form of intra- and interprotein crosslinks, deactivate various enzymes, exacerbating disease progression. The interactions of AGEs with the receptors for the AGEs (RAGE) also result in further downstream inflammatory cascade events. The overexpression …

Polyphenols and representative small phenolic acids and molecules derived from larger constituents are dietary antioxidants from fruits, vegetables and largely other plant-based sources that have ability to scavenge free radicals. What is often neglected in polyphenol metabolism is bioavailability and the role of the gut microbiota (GMB), which has an essential role in health and disease and participates in co-metabolism with the host. The composition of the gut microbiota is in constant flux and is modified by multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including antibiotics. Dietary or other factors are key modulators of the host gut milieu. In this review, we …

A dual-phase high-entropy boride (HEB)/carbide (HEC) ceramic with a fine grain size was synthesized by a sequential boro/carbothermal process. In the first step, an Hf–Nb–Ta–Ti–Zr-containing carbide was synthesized by a carbothermal reduction of oxides followed by the reaction of the carbide with B4C and ZrH2 to convert part of the carbide to boride. The resulting composition was ∼29 vol% HEB with an average grain size of ∼1.1 μm. Solid solution formation occurred at the densification temperature of 1900°C resulting in a relative density higher than 99%. The Vickers hardness was 26.5 ± 1.4 GPa. This is the first report of …

The transition towards renewable energy requires increasing quantities of nonfuel mineral commodities, including tellurium used in certain photovoltaics. While demand for tellurium may increase markedly, the potential to increase tellurium supply is not well-understood. In this analysis, we estimate the quantity of tellurium contained in anode slimes generated by electrolytic copper refining by country between 1986 and 2018, including uncertainties. For 2018, the results indicate that 1930 (1500-2700, 95% confidence interval) metric tons of tellurium were contained in anode slimes globally. This is nearly quadruple the reported tellurium production for that year. China has the greatest potential to increase tellurium …

Extrusion-based 3D printing with rapidly hardening polymeric materials is capable of building almost any conceivable structure. However, concrete, one of the most widely used materials for large-scale structural components, is generally based on inorganic binder materials like Portland cement. Unlike polymeric materials, a lack of precise control of the extent and rate of solidification of cement-based suspensions is a major issue that affects the ability to 3D-print geometrically complex structures. Here, we demonstrate a novel method for controllable-rapid solidification of concentrated mineral suspensions that contain a polymer binder system based on epoxy and thiol precursors as well as one or …

The synthesis and crystallographic site occupancy were investigated for MgAl2O4 with and without mechanical activation of the precursor powders. Heating to 1200 °C or higher resulted in the formation of a single spinel phase regardless of whether the powders were mechanically activated or not. Neutron diffraction analysis was used to determine cation site occupancy and revealed that mechanical activation resulted in a lower degree of cation site inversion compared to the nonactivated materials, which indicated that the powders were closer to thermodynamic equilibrium. This is the first study to characterize the effects of mechanical activation on crystallographic site occupancy in …

A Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Method With Robin Transmission Condition For Transient Thermal Analysis Of 3-D Integrated Circuits, Xuan Zhang, Ping Li, Xiao Chun Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jun Fa Mao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this article, a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method hybridized with Robin transmission condition (RTC-DGTD) is proposed for the transient thermal analysis of 3-D integrated circuits (ICs). As a kind of domain decomposition method (DDM), the DGTD method employs a term named numerical flux for the information exchange of solutions between neighboring subdomains. The numerical flux is a function of both temperature T and heat flux q, and thus for the heat equation, apart from T, the variable q has to be solved as well. To reach this, the traditional DGTD method decomposes the second-order partial-differential thermal equation into two …

By using a novel multispectral imaging technology, the 2-D distributions of flame temperature and emissivity were measured in a 16 MW incinerator to co-fire municipal solid waste (MSW) and municipal sludge. A way to establish the relationship between the multispectral flame images and the temperature was proposed by combing the Newton iteration method and Hottel emissivity model. The results showed that the measured temperatures at different locations varied by 31.25% with a fixed steam evaporation rate, and 11.76% with different steam evaporation rates at a given port. The temperatures and emissivities decreased at upper locations due to the lower local …

The role of disorder and particularly of the interfacial region between crystalline and amorphous phases of indium oxide in the formation of hydrogen defects with covalent (In-OH) or ionic (In-H-In) bonding are investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics and hybrid density-functional approaches. The results reveal that disorder stabilizes In-H-In defects even in the stoichiometric amorphous oxide and also promotes the formation of deep electron traps adjacent to In-OH defects. Furthermore, below-room-temperature fluctuations help switch interfacial In-H-In into In-OH, creating a new deep state in the process. This H-defect transformation limits not only the number of free carriers but also the …

Over the past three decades, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has grown from a tool for monitoring earthquakes and other massive signature deformation events to tracking the subtle, slow deformation processes associated with changes in groundwater storage. Improvements in time-series processing and noise reduction, as well as improved models of deformation, have enabled this advancement. InSAR has proven to be a valuable tool for characterizing elastic deformation in regions experiencing little long-term storage loss, as well as inelastic deformation in over-stressed aquifers.

Team building can be challenging when participants are from the same discipline or sub-discipline, but needs special attention when participants use a different vocabulary and have different cultural views on what constitutes viable problems and solutions. Essential to No Boundary Thinking (NBT) teams is proper formulation of the problem to be solved, and a basic tenant is that the NBT team must come together with diverse perspectives to decide the problem before solutions can be considered. Given that participants come with different views on problem formulation and solution, it is important to consider a robust process for team formation and …

Moreover, the convective term in the phase field evolutionary equation is approximated in a semi-implicit manner. Similarly, the fluid momentum equation is computed by a semi-implicit algorithm: implicit treatment for the kinematic diffusion term, explicit update for the pressure gradient, combined with semi-implicit approximations to the fluid convection …

Clusters of dead trees are forest fires-prone. To maintain ecological balance and realize its protection, timely detection of dead trees in forest remote sensing images using existing computer vision methods is of great significance. Remote sensing images captured by Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) typically have several issues, e.g., mixed distribution of adjacent but different tree classes, interference of redundant information, and high differences in scales of dead tree clusters, making the detection of dead tree clusters much more challenging. Therefore, based on the Multipath dense composite network (MDCN), an object detection method called LLAM-MDCNet is proposed in this paper. First, …

The engineering profession has experienced some ethical cases that were rarely reported, scrutinized, or discussed because: they did not necessarily represent violations of existing codes even if they breached ethical principles; those within the organization were not prepared to take steps to address the issues or impose sanction; an/or some of the personnel associated with these cases resorted to silence to avoid being labeled as trouble-makers in their organizations and, perhaps, more broadly, in society. The goal of this paper is to heighten managerial awareness of ethical issues, interrelated ethical lapses, and appropriate responsive actions within professional engineering communities. As …
