Ground Magnetic Study Of The Anderson Ridge Quadrangle, Fremont County, Wyoming., Roland Lee-Ping Chen Jan 1964

Ground Magnetic Study Of The Anderson Ridge Quadrangle, Fremont County, Wyoming., Roland Lee-Ping Chen

Masters Theses

"The Anderson Ridge quadrangle is comprised of folded and faulted schist intruded by granitic, pegmatitic and basic igneous bodies. A ground magnetic survey was conducted using a torsion balance Radar Magnetometer of 15.5 gammas sensitivity to measure the vertical intensity variations. The results are presented on eleven profiles with accompanying generalized geologic cross-sections, two magnetic contour maps of 50 gamma interval, one with traverse line geologic control, and the second controlled by a geologic map of the area. A clear relationship exists between the vertical magnetic intensity distribution pattern and the known areal geology.

The susceptibility of the most common …

Zirconium Chloride Nuclear Battery, Lonnie J. Shalton Jan 1964

Zirconium Chloride Nuclear Battery, Lonnie J. Shalton

Masters Theses

"An investigation of the neutron absorption characteristics of zirconium chloride was made to verify the reports of Chicago Development Corporation (5810 47th Ave., Riverdale, Md.) that ZrCl Blight be used as a power source for a nuclear battery. The company detected what they believed to be a beta current when the ZrCl was bombarded with neutrons from a slightly enriched uranium source. Investigation using higher powered neutron sources revealed that such a current was highly improbable and the company incorrectly interpeted the phenomena. Reports in the literature also confirmed that an electric current from the ZrCl using a low powered …

A Study Of The Eddy Diffusivity In Turbulent Heat Transfer, Frank Fu-Kun Tao Jan 1964

A Study Of The Eddy Diffusivity In Turbulent Heat Transfer, Frank Fu-Kun Tao

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the eddy thermal diffusivity values as a function of radial position at various Reynolds numbers for a fluid flowing turbulently in a pipe. The ratios of the eddy thermal diffusivity and the eddy viscosity were also investigated.

A vertical column of copper tube two inches in diameter was constructed which consisted of an entrance section for the development of the velocity profile and a heating section for the development of the temperature distribution. The heating section was jacketed and maintained at a constant wall temperature at about 103 ° F by the …

"Detailed surface and subsurface studies of the Kimmswick Limestone and the Galena Formation of Middle Ordovician age in eastern Missouri, western Illinois, and southeastern Iowa were conducted in order to examine their stratigraphic relations, geological history, environment of deposition, and petroleum possibilities.

The main objective of this study was to seek a stratigraphic subdivision of the Kimmswick Limestone in Missouri, based on its gross lithology and thin section study, and its correlation with the Galena Formation in Illinois and Iowa. As a result of this study, based on the examination of twelve surface sections and 92 thin sections a three-fold …

A Study Of Plane And Spherical Compressional Waves In A Voigt Viscoelastic Medium, Gerald B. Rupert Jan 1964

A Study Of Plane And Spherical Compressional Waves In A Voigt Viscoelastic Medium, Gerald B. Rupert

Doctoral Dissertations

"In investigating the behavior of waves traveling through cohesive solids, two assumptions are usually made: that the propagating medium is either elastic or viscoelastic, and that the wave is either planar or spherical in form. For small distances from the source of the disturbance the medium can be considered elastic and the wave spherical rather than planar. The assumption of elasticity allows considerable simplification of the mathematical analysis, and assuming a spherical wave form is an acceptable approximation if the initial disturbance is essentially a point source and the propagating medium is nearly homogeneous. However, for large distances from the …

A Determination Of The Theoretical Stresses In A Deep Beam., James William Tritz Jan 1964

A Determination Of The Theoretical Stresses In A Deep Beam., James William Tritz

Masters Theses

"This paper presents an analytical solution of the stress distribution in a deep beam of finite length. The beam being considered is analyzed as one of plane stress. The method employed superimposes two stress functions each of which is a trigonometric series. The first stress function satisfies all boundary conditions except that of zero stress on the vertical faces. The second function is found, so that, when combined with the first function, all boundary conditions are satisfied. The IBM 1620 digital computer is then used to find the stresses for a particular beam. The results of this analysis are then …

Influence Of Quartz Particle Size And Concentration On The Fracture Stresses Of Triaxial Alumina Porcelain., John David Weyand Jan 1964

Influence Of Quartz Particle Size And Concentration On The Fracture Stresses Of Triaxial Alumina Porcelain., John David Weyand

Masters Theses

"Quartz particles were introduced into a typical triaxial alumina porcelain. Three levels of particle size and three levels of concentration were studied. The strength sample sizes were large. A diametral- compression loading method was used for strength testing. It was found that the porcelain strength decreased with increasing grain size and concentration of quartz particles. A linear relationship existed between log quartz concentration and mean fracture stress"--Abstract, p. ii

A Method To Give The Best Linear Combination Of Order Statistics To Estimate The Mean Of Any Symmetric Population, Robert M. Smith Jan 1964

A Method To Give The Best Linear Combination Of Order Statistics To Estimate The Mean Of Any Symmetric Population, Robert M. Smith

Masters Theses

“This paper gives a distribution for the ratio of two non-independent normally distributed random variables. The random variables involved are jointly distributed as the bivariate normal with means zero and variance- covariance matrix V.

The sample mean and one-half the sum of the smallest and largest sample observations from the symmetrically truncated Cauchy density function are compared as estimates of the mean of this density function. The reason for this comparison is to determine which of these two estimators gives the best estimate of the mean.

A method to empirically determine the best linear combination of order statistics for any …

Radiation Characteristics Of A U-Slot Antenna., Richard Paul Brueggemann Jan 1964

Radiation Characteristics Of A U-Slot Antenna., Richard Paul Brueggemann

Masters Theses

"The radiation equations for a simple rectangular slot antenna are derived as a function of the field distribution in the slot. The electric field distribution in the slot is then formulated as a function of the aperture dimensions. The U-shaped slot antenna is described as an extension of the rectangular slot theory and the actual field is measured in the slot for comparison.

The far field equations a.re derived for the U-slot antenna similar to those for the rectangular slot antenna and are evaluated using the formulated distributions in the slot for antennas of two different electrical sizes. The equations …

Study Of The Ste. Genevieve Formation At Selected Localities In Southern Illinois And Western Kentucky, Mahlon Jack Apgar Reinhard

Masters Theses

"The carbonate rocks of the Mississippian Ste. Genevieve Formation were studied megascopically in four quarries--Cave in Rock, Franklin, Three Rivers, and Fredonia Valley--within a small area of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and in a drill-core from the Cave in Rock Quarry. The rocks were studied microscopically in seventy-four thin sections prepared from samples from the quarries and the drill-core. The Ste. Genevieve Formation is typically an extremely oolitic, fragmentally fossiliferous limestone which is very light gray to white. The megascopic descriptions of the quarry exposures are presented as measured sections and columnar sections. A detailed log of the drill-core is …

A Laboratory Model Study Of Fluid Cross Flow., James Gary Fore Jan 1964

A Laboratory Model Study Of Fluid Cross Flow., James Gary Fore

Masters Theses

"A procedure for scaling and operating a laboratory model for the purpose of studying fluid crossflow between zones of different permeability is presented. A modified existing model is used to simulate conditions for three dimensional, incompressible, two-phase flow through a two-layer, unconsolidated, homogeneous porous medium.

Eight tests were made to show effects on crossflow between the zones. Qualitative results indicate crossflow from the high to the low permeability zone for various perforation ratios and mobility ratios"--Abstract, p. ii

Investigation Of Inoculant Effect On Cast Iron, Darrell W. Donis Jan 1964

Investigation Of Inoculant Effect On Cast Iron, Darrell W. Donis

Masters Theses

"An assumption was made that extensive holding time of an inoculated gray iron melt would result in a loss of physical properties of castings poured from this melt. This theory was examined in both a literature search and by testing and conclusions drawn from these findings are presented and discussed. Although there is a great deal of data available which discusses inoculants and their effects, very little mention is made of the effect of holding time in any of this material. The results indicate that holding time is of considerable importance when dealing with inoculated iron, and that calcium silicon …

Ignition Time Lag: A Measure Of Explosive Energy Release, Paul H. Rydlund Jan 1964

Ignition Time Lag: A Measure Of Explosive Energy Release, Paul H. Rydlund

Masters Theses

"By means of the resistance-element, or probe-wire, detonation-velocity measurement technique, explosive reactions from various blasting agents were studied. To reduce the number of variables, only standard AN-FO 94/6 mixtures were used, as are commonly employed today in constructions and mining operations. Accuracy of the data obtained was excellent, and the method proved itself not only relatively simple to operate but versatile in providing considerable information under many testing conditions. Studies of test records revealed the presence of a time-lag frequently occuring [sic] after primer detonation. Environmental factors such as confinement, charge diameter, primer size and energy content, and surface coatings …

Structural And Magnetic Characteristics Of The Belton Anomaly, Cass County, Missouri, Nagib Chamon Jan 1964

Structural And Magnetic Characteristics Of The Belton Anomaly, Cass County, Missouri, Nagib Chamon

Masters Theses

"A vertical intensity magnetic survey of approximately 156 square miles in Cass County, central-west Missouri, revealed a broad circular anomaly whose magnetic relief exceeds 1000 gammas. Surface rocks are very gently inclined and are of Pennsylvanian age. Crystalline basement rocks are at a depth of approximately 2400 feet. Analysis of the data shows that the Belton anomaly consists of discontinuous smaller magnetic anomalies surrounding the central part of this broad anomaly. The central area of the Belton anomaly is occupied by a magnetic low. Analytical calculation showed that the source of the magnetic disturbance is at least 3650 feet below …

Thermal Resistance Of Bonds And Contacts, David Marion Lewis Jan 1964

Thermal Resistance Of Bonds And Contacts, David Marion Lewis

Masters Theses

"The adhesive and sealant Industry has more than kept pace with our rapidly expanding technology of today. This growth has left the standardization of data on adhesives far behind and lack of this data is obvious. Of the many applications, particularly as related to space technology and energy conversion, the resistance to the flow of heat offered by the bond layer is of considerable importance.

Little information is available on the effect of adhesives on heat transfer. In connection with their work on honeycomb panels, Rankle, Gier, and Bevans (7) determined the thermal resistance of the particular type of adhesives …

The Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase Of Hygrophorus Conicus., Dilip N. Patel Jan 1964

The Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase Of Hygrophorus Conicus., Dilip N. Patel

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine an assay method for measuring the activity of the indole acetic acid oxidase present in Hygrophorus conicus. This enzyme converts tryptamine or indole acetic acid (IAA) into oxindole acetic acid (OIAA).

An assay method for measuring the activity of the enzyme was developed based on the spectrophotometric measurement of tryptamine, IAA, and OIAA. Several other assay methods were tried. The colorimetric method of Gordon and Weber (l4) was found to be useful for a quantitative determination of IAA and was insensitive to OIAA. Paper chromatography proved to be useful as a qualitative …

A New Method For The Evaluation Of Metal Primers., Bhalchandra Dave Jan 1964

A New Method For The Evaluation Of Metal Primers., Bhalchandra Dave

Masters Theses

"Corrosion is the destructive attack of metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Rusting is usually the term applied to the corrosion of iron-base alloys with formation of corrosion products consisting largely of hydrous ferric oxides. Non-ferrous metals therefore, corrode but do not rust. (l4) More than 40 per cent of the world's production of steel and iron is destroyed by rusting which costs about six billion dollars every year. In 1954 the American Petroleum Industry, Subcommittee on Corrosion, published a preliminary estimate that corrosion was costing 2 the petroleum refining industry between eleven and nineteen cents per …

The Effects Of Granular Size On The Thermal Conductivity Of Sand, Kanubhai M. Patel Jan 1964

The Effects Of Granular Size On The Thermal Conductivity Of Sand, Kanubhai M. Patel

Masters Theses

"The thermal conductivity of granular materials can be determined by the Thomas method. This method was used here to determine the effects of granular size on the thermal conductivity of sand. A river sand was secured and screened. The sand retained between the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, mesh 10 and 14, 14 and 28, 28 and 40, 40 and 48, 48 and 60, and below mesh 60, was used for tests.

The thermal conductivity for the above six samples obtained by the author coincide fairly well with published data.

It is reported in the International Critical Tables that the thermal …

Optimum Zero-Memory Nonlinear Filter, Benjamin Shaw-Hu Wang Jan 1964

Optimum Zero-Memory Nonlinear Filter, Benjamin Shaw-Hu Wang

Masters Theses

“The purpose of this report is to review the basic work described by Zadeh insofar as systems of class N1 are concerned and to apply his general results to a specific problem in which a non-linear filter is mandatory simply because the linear filter is essentially ineffective. The ineffectiveness stems from the fact that the autocorrelation function of the signal plus the noise has essentially the same variational character as the signal alone. Therefore, the transfer function of the linear filter turns out to be simply a constant. Thus, the output of the linear filter is just an attenuated …

The Characteristics Of Radial Strain Propagation Induced By Explosive Impact In Jefferson City Dolomite., Choon K. Quan Jan 1964

The Characteristics Of Radial Strain Propagation Induced By Explosive Impact In Jefferson City Dolomite., Choon K. Quan

Masters Theses

"Blasting effects depend largely on peak radial strains propagated in rock media by explosive impact. To improve blasting design and control of secondary effects (e.g., structural fatigue), an equation for peak radial strain propagation induced by explosions was developed as follows: Emax = K e-αr /r

An instrumental technique was designed to test the validity of the equation in the Jefferson City dolomite. Results showed ii that for 1-lb charges of 60% ammonia-gelatin explosive, peak strains, at any distance r, were reduced in amplitude in accordance with an exponential decay function of the type Emax = 281 e-0.026r …

Microscopic Observations On Etched Surfaces Of Zinc Single Crystals And On Anodic Disintegration., Yun Wang Jan 1964

Microscopic Observations On Etched Surfaces Of Zinc Single Crystals And On Anodic Disintegration., Yun Wang

Masters Theses

"The technique used to grow single zinc crystals was based on the Bridgman method. Zinc-gold, zinc-aluminum, and zinc-magnesium alloys were prepared and their single crystals were grown. Four crystallographic planes of the single zinc crystals were used for both chemical and anodic etching. The zinc alloys were etched more easily by acids than the purest (99.999%) zinc. The etching patterns changed for the different crystallographic planes of the single zinc crystals.

The appearance of particles during anodic dissolution of the single zinc crystals depended on time, acid concentration and current density. The partial disintegration of single zinc crystals is promoted …

The Effect Of An Induction Field On Transducers., Ratilal S. Patel Jan 1964

The Effect Of An Induction Field On Transducers., Ratilal S. Patel

Masters Theses

"This report presents the results of an experimental investigation on the effect of an induction field on transducer output. Various types of transducers; strain gages, thermocouples, and thermistors, were used. The changes in the output of these transducers were measured for various induction field conditions.

Measurements must often be made where strong electrical fields are present. Strain gages are used to measure the stresses in electrical machinery. Thermocouples and thermistors used for measuring the temperature of materials undergoing heat treatment with an induction heater are also subjected to an induction field.

The general experimental procedure was the same throughout the …

Stiffness Of Lightweight Reinforced Concrete Beams, Rameshchandra H. Patel Jan 1964

Stiffness Of Lightweight Reinforced Concrete Beams, Rameshchandra H. Patel

Masters Theses

"This work is a presentation of the findings of an experimental measurement of stiffness (El) for reinforced and nonreinforced lightweight and normal concrete. The experimental values of stiffness are compared with values obtained using standard reinforced concrete theory. In all, thirty beams, fifteen for lightweight and fifteen for normal concrete, each having the compressive strength of approximately 4, 500 psi, were tested. In addition to stiffness measurements, a relationship was obtained between the dynamic modulus of elasticity and the ultimate compressive strength at various ages for the particular lightweight concrete used"--Abstract, page ii.

Effect Of Poly-Ethylene Glycol, A Non-Shrinking Agent, On Strength Properties Of Concrete., Vasantrai Vallabhbhai Desai Jan 1964

Effect Of Poly-Ethylene Glycol, A Non-Shrinking Agent, On Strength Properties Of Concrete., Vasantrai Vallabhbhai Desai

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes laboratory test made on plain concrete cylinders and ~earns for compressive strength, flexural strength, durability and shrinkage, using poly-ethylene glycol (ElOOO) as a non-shrinking admixture. The tests were conducted in the Materials Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department.

The test results show that poly-ethylene glycol has the effect of reducing the compressive and flexural strength of plain concrete. The admixture also has the effect of reducing shrinkage, and reversing it, causing expansion with large percentage of its use. For the number of cycles of alternate freezing and thawing reported the admixture did not have any effect on …

Artifact Filter., Kent William Swearingen Jan 1964

Artifact Filter., Kent William Swearingen

Masters Theses

"Peripheral blood pulse monitors are highly susceptible to noise-artifact-- in their present stage of development. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate a feasible means for filtering the artifact, using existing monitors. Since no peripheral pulse monitor (transducer) was available for experimentation, a simulated test input was devised with frequency variations from JO cycles/minute to 1.50 cycles/minute.

The filtering circuit predicts the time location of each input pulse. The location of the prediction is governed by the accuracy of the preceding prediction. This is controlled by an R-C timing circuit with a Schmitt Trigger and relay.

From the data …
