Studies Of An Electrical Method For Generating Ultrasonic Waves, Yung-Yien Huang Jan 1964

Studies Of An Electrical Method For Generating Ultrasonic Waves, Yung-Yien Huang

Masters Theses

“Ultrasonic waves have proved very valuable in the observation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. From the velocity measurements of ultrasonic waves in metals, it is possible to obtain elastic constants, such as the compressibility, and the specific heat. Also, the observed attenuation depends greatly on the type and structure of the material. One of the widely used methods for investigation of the internal losses in solid state physics is the pulse-echo technique. This method is being used almost exclusively in internal friction investigation"--Introduction, page 1.

Development Of A Fluor-Mica Dielectric Using Glass-Ceramic Fabrication Methods., James Joseph Tuzzeo Jan 1964

Development Of A Fluor-Mica Dielectric Using Glass-Ceramic Fabrication Methods., James Joseph Tuzzeo

Masters Theses

"A tetrasilicic fluor-mica, K2Mg5si8o20F4, was synthesized using glass-ceramic fabrication methods. Bubbles, rods, and disks of glass-mica were formed, and heat treated at selected temperatures between 620°c and 1160°c for various time periods. Density changes were correlated to mica content to determine the relative amounts of crystalline mica phase precipitated after heat treatment. Dielectric losses and dielectric constants of the glass-mica disks were measured for correlation to mica content"--Abstract, p/ ii

The Effect Of Matrix Condition In The Solution Of A System Of Linear Algebraic Equations., Herbert R. Alcorn Jan 1964

The Effect Of Matrix Condition In The Solution Of A System Of Linear Algebraic Equations., Herbert R. Alcorn

Masters Theses

"The solution of a system of linear non-homogeneous equations may contain errors which originate from many sources. A system of linear equations in which small changes in the coefficients cause large changes in the solution is unstable and the coefficient matrix is ill- conditioned .

The purpose of this study is to define several measures of matrix condition and to test them by correlation with a measure of the actual errors introduced into a system of equations.

The study indicates that three of the five measures of condition tested were reliable indices of the magnitude of error to expect in …

Estimation And Tabulation Of Bias Coefficients For Regression Analysis In Incompletely Specified Linear Models., Harry Kerry Edwards Jan 1964

Estimation And Tabulation Of Bias Coefficients For Regression Analysis In Incompletely Specified Linear Models., Harry Kerry Edwards

Masters Theses

"There is often some uncertainty as to the exact number of predictors to include in the specification of the linear model when the theory of regression analysis is applied to specific data. To aid the experimenter in defining the correct number of predictors, a bias function that estimates the deviation of a linear model from the true model has been defined.

The writer has derived an accurate, economical, numerical method for calculating the bias function associated with an incompletely specified linear model and has tabulated bias function coefficients for a reasonable number of doubtful predictors"--Abstract, page ii.

Masters Theses

"The lattice constants of α. - Zr with 122 ppm H are a25 = 3.23622 ± o. 00005 Å and c25 = 5 .1526 ± 0. 0003 Å. The thermal expansion coefficients of α - Zr are found to be αa =4.6 x 10-6(0C-1) and αC =11,0 x 10-6(0C-1) in the range between 15 and 55°c.

The solid solubility limit in the Zr - H system at room temperature and independent of the H pressure was determined by the parametric x-ray method to be …

A Parameter Perturbation Procedure For Obtaining A Solution To Systems Of Nonlinear Equations., James Carlton Helm Jan 1964

A Parameter Perturbation Procedure For Obtaining A Solution To Systems Of Nonlinear Equations., James Carlton Helm

Masters Theses

"For simultaneous nonlinear equations the convergence of the known functional iterative procedures is dependent upon a good initial approximation to the desired roots. In this paper the restriction on the choice of the initial approximation has been circumvented by dividing each problem into a number of subsidiary problems in accordance with a parameter perturbation procedure. The study presents a discussion of the algorithm and the conditions for convergence. The discussion, also, includes the problems which were solved using the parameter perturbation procedure"--Abstract, p. ii

The Effect Of Gap Graded Aggregate On The Properties Of Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete, Maurice L. Northcutt

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of deviations from the recommended gradation of aggregate upon asphalt concrete mixes. The aggregate used in this study was a good grade Missouri Limestone and was mixed with an asphalt cement of 85-100 penetration grade. A control mix was designed in accordance with the Marshall Method using a gradation recommended by the Asphalt Institute. Ten aggregate blends were prepared by wasting certain fractions or combinations of fractions and the wasted weights were redistributed into the coarser or finer aggregate sizes. The test mixes were designed using the same method and …

The Importance Of Radiation As A Means Of Controlling Surface And Internal Temperatures Of A Semi-Infinite Solid, Kenneth C. Woodruff Jr. Jan 1964

The Importance Of Radiation As A Means Of Controlling Surface And Internal Temperatures Of A Semi-Infinite Solid, Kenneth C. Woodruff Jr.

Masters Theses

"This problem is concerned with the temperature history of a semi-infinite solid bounded by one flat surface.

Heat was applied by convection from a hot fluid to the flat surface of the solid which was originally at a uniform temperature. Heat was radiated from the flat surface to black space and conducted into the solid according to Fourier's law. The temperature at the surface, and at several points beneath the surface, was determined as a function of time.

A method for solution of such a problem is demonstrated here by the use of numerical analysis and the Royal McBee LGP …

The Prediction Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Various Binary Non-Polar Gaseous Mixtures., Chester Foon-Chen Feng Jan 1964

The Prediction Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Various Binary Non-Polar Gaseous Mixtures., Chester Foon-Chen Feng

Masters Theses

"A simple method for predicting the thermal conductivity of binary non-polar gaseous mixtures from the force parameters of the pure components and composition was developed. The method is an extension of the application of the combining methods previously derived for viscosity predictions. Altogether, the published thermal conductivities of 683 binary non-polar mixtures at various temperature levels were compared with the corresponding calculated thermal conductivities resulting from the prediction method. The corresponding values predicted from Hirschfelder, Curtiss and Bird's expression were also compared.

Among the 683 binary mixtures, there were 138 di-di, di-poly, and poly-poly mixtures, 241 mono-

  • Transverse Spin Relaxation Of Optically Pumped Rubidium., Robert Evans Hufft Jan 1964

Transverse Spin Relaxation Of Optically Pumped Rubidium., Robert Evans Hufft

    Masters Theses

The study of the transverse spin relaxation of rubidium vapor is a continuation of the work done by Kenneth Steinbruegge1 and that in progress by John Martin2 at the University of Missouri at Rolla. The purpose of the experiment is to study the change of intensity of the transmitted pumping light at resonance in the longitudinal direction, and the observation of the high frequency modulation of a second "cross" beam of light perpendicular to the first. Under resonant conditions this "cross" beam will exhibit a phase coherence and a loss of phase coherence when parameters of the experiment …

Determination Of The Shapes Of Fixed And Moving Polodes Of Class Ii Four Bar Mechanisms., Manharkumar Kantilal Sheth

    Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to determine the shapes of fixed and moving polodes of class II four bar mechanisms, since there has been little, or no work done in determining their shapes.

Twenty different mechanisms were taken to study the shape of the fixed and moving polodes. The best equation which fits each curve was found by using the least square method in polynomials. Coefficients for each curve were determined with the help of the I.BM 1620 computer. The equation was found to be a six-degree polynomial which fits very well to each curve. There seems to be …

Application Of An Orifice Meter To Fan Testing., J. F. T. Agapito

    Masters Theses

"In this investigation the application of an orifice meter to fan testing was studied and evaluated. An orifice meter was designed and was installed in a centrifugal fan duct. Measurements were checked and compared with those of a standard pitot-tube traverse and were found to be in very close agreement. It is suggested that a meter of this type could easily be adapted not only to laboratory work but also to field tests"--Abstract, p. ii

A Study Of The Stabilization Of Putnam Silt Loam With Large Organic Cations, George C. Bennett Jr. Jan 1964

A Study Of The Stabilization Of Putnam Silt Loam With Large Organic Cations, George C. Bennett Jr.

    Masters Theses

"Laboratory tests were conducted to determine if Aliquat, a quaternary ammonium chloride compound, could be used to change the physical properties of Putnam silt loam. The effects of adding varying amounts of Aliquat to the soil were measured in terms of the results of Atterberg limits tests, the moisture-density relationship, unconfined and triaxial compressive strength, and capillary adsorption characteristics. A small change in the Atterberg limits, the optimum moisture content, and the maximum dry density was noted. An increase in the unconfined compressive strength and a reduction in the moisture adsorption potential was accomplished by the addition of 0.25 and …

The Dielectric Properties Of Thallium Nitrate., Gene E. Gowins Jan 1964

The Dielectric Properties Of Thallium Nitrate., Gene E. Gowins

    Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to investigate the dielectric behavior of thallous nitrate and to determine whether it belongs to space group Pbnm or to Pbn2.

The growing of single crystals of thallous nitrate which are suitable for dielectric measurements is difficult because the crystals are prone to initiate a dendritic growth habit. In the present work single crystals of thallous nitrate were obtained, however, by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution at 55 degrees centigrade. The crystals were plates, not larger than 8 x 8 x 2 mm, whose principal faces were subsequently indentifled as (001) planes. The …

A Study Of The Crystallographic Orientation Dependence Of Electrical Resistivity In Zinc, Paul Frederic Becher Jan 1964

A Study Of The Crystallographic Orientation Dependence Of Electrical Resistivity In Zinc, Paul Frederic Becher

    Masters Theses

"A potentiometer and galvanometer setup was used to obtain electrical resistivity data for polycrystalline zinc. Cold working textures were investigated by the reflection technique with a quadrant x-ray spectrometer.

Resistivity data were obtained for specimens that were reduced up to forty per cent from the as received condition, and the corresponding textures were studied. The results indicated that the resistivity change in the rolling direction is due to the reorientation of the c-axis in the rolling caused by cold working"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Stability Of Numerical Solution For Parabolic Partial Differential Equations., Tsang-Chi Huang Jan 1964

A Study Of Stability Of Numerical Solution For Parabolic Partial Differential Equations., Tsang-Chi Huang

    Masters Theses

"Parabolic partial differential equations hold a very important position in science and technology since they are encountered frequently in the solution of diffusion and heat-conduction problems. Theoretically, it is possible to solve many of these equations by analytical methods, but the modern development of mathematics has revealed that there are numerous difficulties in obtaining the solution. Numerical solutions for most applied problems of a parabolic partial differential equation type are practically necessary, thus methods for numerical solution or approximate solution became more important. Since numerical results are required for most applied problems of a parabolic partial differential equation type a …

Determination Of Transient Temperature Stresses In Plates, Teh Yu Hu Jan 1964

Determination Of Transient Temperature Stresses In Plates, Teh Yu Hu

    Masters Theses

“The purpose of this thesis is to determine the transient temperature stresses in two-dimensional plate structures restrained against rotation at the ends but not restrained against elongation. In this investigation, only one-dimensional heat flow is considered. The heat flow is first treated as a problem in pure conduction and then the effects of convection through a boundary layer are considered.

The differential equation of transient heat conduction is solved by Fourier series and Duhamel’s theorem, and a graphical method of solution for temperatures in terms of dimensionless parameters is presented.

Solution of this problem is valid for a semi-infinite plate …

Analysis Of Space Frames By Moment Distribution., Ting-Hwa Wang Jan 1964

Analysis Of Space Frames By Moment Distribution., Ting-Hwa Wang

    Masters Theses

"This work presents an analysis of space frames and planar frames loaded in different planes by the method of moment distribution and the theory of superposition. From this analysis it is found that the torsional stiffness of frame members has a great effect on the final bending moments when twisting moments are applied to the frame. The analysis of space frames considering the forces, stresses, and moments in all three dimensions always yields a design more accurate and economical in material than the traditional planar frame analysis"--Abstract, p. i

Synthesis Of Unity-Gain Rc Networks From Second Degree Transfer Functions., Ronald L. Mcnally Jan 1964

Synthesis Of Unity-Gain Rc Networks From Second Degree Transfer Functions., Ronald L. Mcnally

    Masters Theses

"A synthesis procedure is presented which realizes second order open circuit transfer functions. This procedure is developed using parallel networks. The transfer functions for each parallel network are obtained by use of separation parameters. Two constraints are used in the development: first, the realized network must be an RC network; second, the desired multiplicative gain constant must be realized. With these constaints a parameter space is developed which aids in the selection of the proper parallel networks to be combined. Necessary and sufficient conditions are developed which are used to test the transfer functions. The realization simply consists of the …

The Submerged Culture Of Thiobacillus Thio-Oxidans In A Pilot Scale Fermentor, Edward Hibbert Crum Jan 1964

The Submerged Culture Of Thiobacillus Thio-Oxidans In A Pilot Scale Fermentor, Edward Hibbert Crum

    Masters Theses

"A strain of Thiobaci.llus thiooxidans was isolated from a West Virginia coal mine drainage. This strain was characterized by its production of sulfuric acid in shake flasks. The strain was also compared with a pure culture of h thiooxidans obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC number 8085).

The strain was grown in submerged culture in a 16-liter pilot scale fermenter. Two aeration systems, air and air enriched with carbon dioxide, were examined. The air enriched with carbon dioxide gave a much more rapid growth rate. The culture reached the mid-log phase of growth after 80 hours of incubation …

An Investigation Of The Adaptability Of The Linvill Model For Transistor Synthesis, John A. Reagan Jan 1964

An Investigation Of The Adaptability Of The Linvill Model For Transistor Synthesis, John A. Reagan

    Masters Theses

"The Linvill transistor model may be used for transistor synthesis if the model accurately approximates transistor response and may be readily simulated on an analog computer. Experiments were performed on a transistor to determine the Linvill model parameters. The transistor's large-signal transient response was investigated by pulsing the emitter with a current that drove the transistor from the active region of operation into saturation. The same problem solved experimentally was then solved analytically by replacing the transistor with the Linvill model. The experiment was then simulated on an analog computer by using the equations that govern the Linvill model's response. …

On Optimum Receiver Using Decision Theory, Philip T. Tai Jan 1964

On Optimum Receiver Using Decision Theory, Philip T. Tai

    Masters Theses

“In recent years communication engineers have given increased attention to the study of communication through random media. The name random is used to describe a medium the properties of which are stated only in a statistical sense. For example the impulsive response of a certain medium may only be known as one of an ensemble of possible impulsive responses; the particular member of interest being drawn up according to some statistical rule. In other words there exists some "uncertainty" concerning the characteristic description of the medium. Significant work on these problems has been done by Price and Turin. Related work …

An Analysis Of The Simulated Inductande Obtained From Forward Biased Semiconductor Diodes., Everett Harold Vannoy Jan 1964

An Analysis Of The Simulated Inductande Obtained From Forward Biased Semiconductor Diodes., Everett Harold Vannoy

    Masters Theses

"The problem undertaken in this thesis is to study the simulated inductance observed in forward-biased abrupt junction p-n diodes with a highly doped p region and a nearly intrinsic n region and show that it is due to conductivity modulation. Unlike other analyses of this phenomenon, a voltage step is applied to the diode in such a direction as to forward bias it and the behavior of the injected minority carriers are observed. By comparing the resultant current through the diode to the relationship predicted by the equivalent circuit of the diode, an expression is obtained for the simulated inductance. …
