Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this study is to analyze the effects cotton quality has on hedging and basis movements within the cotton market to help market participants minimize price risk. The effectiveness of using cotton futures in hedging price risk will be determined by calculating optimal hedge ratios by tenderable quality. Hedge ratios will be calculated using simple differences and error correction models (ECM) on overlapping price data, estimated under both generalized least squares (GLS) and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). An empirical analysis shows that as cotton quality improves, the optimal hedge ratio decreases. ECMs estimated under GLS are found …

That The Parliament Should Be In Harmony With The Nation: The Whig Party, National Self- Determination, And Parliamentary Reform, 1790-1830, J.D. Scott Aug 2024

That The Parliament Should Be In Harmony With The Nation: The Whig Party, National Self- Determination, And Parliamentary Reform, 1790-1830, J.D. Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1790 and 1830 the Whig party in Britain championed the rights of continental European peoples to determine their governments free of outside interference. The universal right to national self-determination became an important part of their own domestic, partisan effort to oppose the ministries of William Pitt the younger and his acolytes—ministries which they believed were undermining the independency of the House of Commons by allying Britain with the despotic governments of the continent in their war against the French Revolution. By casting the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France as an attack against the right to national self-determination, the …

Alight, The Dead Of Night: Ascertaining The Collection And Use Of Nighttime Site Inventory In Landscape Architecture Professional Practice, Jacob Zachary Felkins Aug 2024

Alight, The Dead Of Night: Ascertaining The Collection And Use Of Nighttime Site Inventory In Landscape Architecture Professional Practice, Jacob Zachary Felkins

Theses and Dissertations

In landscape architecture, site inventory is a common precursor and perpetual informant of site design, toolkit development, and best management practices. Within inventory-specific texts, inventory is primarily geared, collected, and applied toward the daytime, and thusly, one might consider the bulk of inventory to be “daytime inventory” which pays greater heed to a diurnal humanity and lesser heed to the nocturnal world. With a greater attention to nighttime site conditions, we explored “nighttime inventory” through a series of primary considerations - nighttime lighting, light pollution, site ecology, and the night sky – along with several secondary considerations. We then surveyed …

Theses and Dissertations

A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for the development, growth, and health of dairy calves; however, diarrhea in pre-weaned calves is highly prevalent, difficult to treat, and causes detrimental effects to the dairy industry. This study characterized early gut microbiota using longread-based 16S rRNA gene sequencing and investigated its associations with calf diarrhea and colostrum microbiota. The full-length 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced on a Nanopore sequencer. We identified shared bacterial species in colostrum and calf feces, whose abundance in calf feces reduced with age. Diarrheic calves exhibited differing gut diversity before, during, and after diarrhea, and harbored …

Complexities In Datura Production And Ceramics In The Arkansas River Valley, Jaylyn Ashley Gustafson Aug 2024

Complexities In Datura Production And Ceramics In The Arkansas River Valley, Jaylyn Ashley Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

Plants and ceramics play a crucial role in many Indigenous cultures, used in food preparation and rituals. Datura is a plant found in the Southeast and is known for its medicinal and hallucinogenic properties. The Indigenous cultures that used Datura in their rituals had to develop an understanding of the plant and how to use it. Datura contains specific alkaloids, which are used for medicinal purposes but can be lethal if consumed incorrectly. Being aware of the danger of consuming Datura incorrectly, the Indigenous people had to create a system of extracting the hallucinogenic properties for their ritual and medicinal …

An Examination Of Depressive Symptoms Of African Americans As A Part Of A Complex System, Jenna Kilgore Aug 2024

An Examination Of Depressive Symptoms Of African Americans As A Part Of A Complex System, Jenna Kilgore

Theses and Dissertations

Symptoms associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) have become a source of distress and disability throughout the world, and MDD is among the most common disorders diagnosed annually in the United States. Despite this growing epidemic, scientists and practitioners continue to conceptualize MDD using a common-cause model, which suggests MDD is a result of a latent depression entity that gives rise to symptoms. This is particularly problematic in African American populations where some symptoms associated with depression (i.e., irritability and pain or numbness in the body) are different than those listed in the DSM. The current study examined depressive symptoms …

Movement Ecology And Nest-Site Selection Of Rock Iguanas Across A Gradient Of Anthropogenic Disturbance, James Walter Wehsener Aug 2024

Movement Ecology And Nest-Site Selection Of Rock Iguanas Across A Gradient Of Anthropogenic Disturbance, James Walter Wehsener

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of animal movement has been integrated into a framework of four components: internal state, motion capacity, navigation capacity, and external factors (Nathan et al., 2008). We used this framework to enhance understanding of movement behavior in the 15 West Indian rock iguana (Cyclura) taxa and to inform conservation management. Our review found that adult female Cyclura large-scale movement is primarily driven by nesting and migrations. Nest site selection also influences hatchling dispersal, but few studies identify preferred habitats for nesting females. Anthropogenic impacts on nesting ecology are largely unexplored, especially in Cyclura carinata. We studied C. carinata nesting ecology …

Examining The Role Of Hypertension-Induced Mechanotransduction On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells And Vascular Calcification, Jessica Moon Aug 2024

Examining The Role Of Hypertension-Induced Mechanotransduction On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells And Vascular Calcification, Jessica Moon

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s number 1 killer. The cardiovascular system helps to pump blood throughout the human body and maintain a systemic balance. However, medial vascular calcification results when this system becomes off balance, such as in cases of high blood pressure leading to hypertension. Many factors are involved in this process, but the most important is the vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic switch to osteoblast-like cells. When vascular smooth muscle cells are subject to mechanical stimuli, mechanotransduction occurs, causing an intracellular signaling cascade leading to a phenotypic switch associated with the Wnt signaling pathway and osteogenic markers. There …

Corporate Malfeasance, Culture, And Executive Integrity, Junnatun Naym Aug 2024

Corporate Malfeasance, Culture, And Executive Integrity, Junnatun Naym

Theses and Dissertations

I study how the decisions of corporate individuals, firm culture, corporate behavior, and the broader financial markets are interconnected. In the first chapter, I examine insider trade reporting violations by corporate insiders, such as executives, officers, and directors, who have access to nonpublic information. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) mandates prompt insider trade reporting within two business days to reduce information asymmetry. However, frequent violations of this deadline breach securities law and may indicate a broader culture of noncompliance. I investigate whether insiders’ adherence to or disregard for filing deadlines reflects the firm’s stance on unethical behavior and its …

Reconceptualizing The Relations Between Impulsivity, Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, And Narcissism Using Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches, Karen Kelley Aug 2024

Reconceptualizing The Relations Between Impulsivity, Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, And Narcissism Using Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches, Karen Kelley

Theses and Dissertations

Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism are three personality constructs collectively associated with antagonism, callousness, and engagement in socially aversive behaviors. These overlapping personality constructs are theorized to have features that meaningfully distinguish each of them from one another, such as variations in impulsivity. However, investigating the interrelations between existing measures of psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and impulsivity presents several methodological challenges. Five Factor Model (FFM) approaches to these four multidimensional constructs provide a promising avenue for examining the associations between these personality domains and impulsivity. This study examined a comprehensive, multidimensional model of impulsivity (i.e., the UPPS-P model of impulsivity) in relation …

Boundary Layer Flow Control In Low-Reynolds Numbers Via Internal Acoustic Excitation, Joshua Michael Kiley Aug 2024

Boundary Layer Flow Control In Low-Reynolds Numbers Via Internal Acoustic Excitation, Joshua Michael Kiley

Theses and Dissertations

Aerodynamic flow control using internal acoustic excitation holds promise as it combines the simplicity of passive flow control techniques (in terms of added weight and operational complexity) with the control authority of active flow control methods. While previous studies have analyzed the effects of acoustic excitation on steady wing aerodynamics, the effect of excitation on the unsteady aerodynamics is not known, which is the aim of the current effort. Internally mounted speakers on a symmetric National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0012 wing are used to excite the unsteady boundary layer at the wing’s leading edge as it executes linear …

Characterizing Threats To Coastal Forests By A Native Defoliator And Non-Native Woodborer, Kristy Marie Mcandrew

Theses and Dissertations

Coastal forests are facing threats due to rising sea levels, increased storm severity, and land use change. These factors stress trees within coastal ecosystems, potentially predisposing them to attack by insects. In North America, two insect species of concern that pose threats to for coastal forest health are the native baldcypress leafroller (BCLR), Archips goyerana Kruse (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), and non-native Japanese cedar longhorned beetle (JCLB), Callidiellum rufipenne Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Baldcypress leafroller has been reported from Mississippi and Louisiana, with defoliation only reported from the latter where increased flooding has stressed host trees. Through widespread trapping efforts, I found that …

Mississippi Mud: Race, Agriculture, And Disharmony In The Era Of Civil Rights, Kymara D. Sneed

Theses and Dissertations

Federal interference in the battle for states’ rights in Mississippi during the 1950s and 60s birthed a civil rights movement that made the Department of Agriculture its main opposition. Alongside state-sanctioned organizations like the Citizens’ Council and the Sovereignty Commission, the USDA used their resources to deter civil rights groups, black farmers, and black agents alike from protesting against segregationist policies. Mississippi Mud uses agriculture as a lens to illustrate how the USDA’s refusal to denounce Jim Crow, especially after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, led to black farmers and extension agents pursuing legal action against the …

Tree Recruitment Dynamics In An Urban Forested Natural Area, Lee Eric Bridges Aug 2024

Tree Recruitment Dynamics In An Urban Forested Natural Area, Lee Eric Bridges

Theses and Dissertations

Urban forested natural areas (UFNAs) are the remnants of larger forested ecosystems that have become surrounded by urban land development. Due to their proximity to dense population centers, UFNAs provide levels of ecosystem services disproportionate with their small size. However, stressors on UFNAs, such as fragmentation, invasive species, urban heat islands, soil compaction, altered seed predator populations, and disrupted disturbance regimes, can alter species composition and forest structure such that the continued flow of these ecosystem services is unlikely. Further, management of these systems is confounded by their size and location. While most urban forests are managed using individual tree …
