Fluoropolymers are well-known for their exceptional thermo-oxidative stability, chemical resistance, UV-light resistance, and low surface energy properties, making them essential for high-performance applications across clean energy, medical device, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and telecommunication industries. Since the discovery of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), numerous fluorinated thermoplastics and fluoroelastomers have entered the market. The global fluoropolymer industry is projected to reach $18 billion by 2033. Most crop species are highly sensitive to elevated levels of soil salinity. Increased soil salination has become one of the most detrimental environmental factors limiting agricultural productivity. Agricultural commodity losses due to salinity are currently estimated to be 12 billion USD per year and are expected to increase every year as more acreage is affected by salination. The Elymus genus is composed of approximately 150 species of grasses with geographic distribution that spans the globe. Longitudinal velocity control, or adaptive cruise control (ACC), is a common advanced driving feature aimed at assisting the driver and reducing fatigue. It maintains the velocity of a vehicle and ensures a safe distance from the preceding vehicle. Many models for ACC are available, such as Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) and Model Predictive Control (MPC). This dissertation comprises three interrelated studies exploring the effects of hurricanes on forestlands and the optimization of salvage logging practices. The first study examines land cover changes and salvage logging patterns following Hurricane Michael. It utilizes predictive models to identify key drivers of these changes, exploring the relative influence of storm intensity, forest vulnerability, and economic/operational factors. School shootings in the United States have garnered significant attention. Since 1999, several high-profile school shootings have taken place across the U.S. in Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, etc. The phenomenon of school shootings and the resultant moral panic is explored by examining media coverage to understand how the media contributes to public responses to these tragic incidents. Although school shootings tend to receive attention, we do not know how this attention can differ across school shootings. Ammonia decomposition plays a crucial role in various industrial and environmental processes, including the production of hydrogen, clean energy storage. Plasma catalysis presents a promising option that utilizes the unique properties of plasma to drive chemical reactions at a lower temperature than traditional methods. This study examines the effectiveness of plasma catalysis for ammonia decomposition on ruthenium (Ru) supported on alumina (Al₂O₃) as the catalyst. The research indicates that the catalytic performance of Ru is significantly impacted by its loading on the alumina support. In this study, I used a dataset that contains low-rate and SYN flood traffic which was generated by a test bed to simulate a Slow DoS attack, stressing a local server by initiating several HTTP POST connections and causing the request payloads to be transmitted slowly. The attack causes problems including interrupted access and noticeably decreased network performance by sending a large number of little packets slowly, which keeps connections open and overloads server resources. Chalcogenide perovskites with a distorted ABX3 structure (A: Ca, Ba, Sr; B: Zr, Hf; X: S, Se) are a prominent focus in optoelectronic materials. One of these is BaZrS3 which has garnered significant attention in perovskite materials due to its distinctive distorted perovskite structure and valuable optical properties that are viable for a single-junction solar cell and present a compelling option for tandem solar cell configurations. Another promising material is SrZrS3 which exists in two phases: needle-like non-perovskite α-SrZrS3 and distorted perovskite β-SrZrS3. Cover crops are known to produce many conservation benefits. However, grower adoption remains low due to various issues and poor economic returns. This study was conducted to identify factors and management practices needed to integrate cover crops into Midsouth corn production systems. The effects of cover crop species, herbicide termination timing, and mechanical termination methods on the growth, grain yields, and economic returns of corn [Zea Mays (L.)] were investigated in Mississippi. The presence of living cover crops at planting stunted corn growth when they were not terminated by herbicides at least four weeks preplant. A legume cover crop reduced …

The development of non-noble metal catalysts has become a prominent topic in the field of Organometallic Chemistry research. Aldehydes and ketones have been catalytically reduced through hydroboration employing unsupported bimetallic Li-M complexes, where M is a group 13 metal (Al, Ga or, In). Herein, we disclose our studies on the supported Li-M complex [Li{(tert-Bu)M(o-C6H4(NMe2))3}],where M=Ga, which catalyzes the hydroboration of benzophenone at room temperature using HBpin. The depiction of people with disabilities in American literature has varied considerably throughout the twentieth century. In the south in particular, disabled individuals have been portrayed as violent, licentious, and deceitful. This thesis examines three hallmarks of American southern literature—Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary, and the short stories of Flannery O’Connor—to demonstrate the anxiety of that era surrounding disability, as well as how disability works in tandem with race and class. Complex samples containing nanoscale or larger materials exhibit light scattering, a universal property of matter. However, the influence of scattering-induced cascading optical processes on quantifying sample scattering intensity and depolarization has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study uses polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) as a model analyte for systematic experimental and computational investigation. It aims to elucidate the effects of cascading optical processes on scattering cross-section, molar coefficients, depolarization, and intensities. This investigation examined the differences in REACT, RT, and jumping performance for the countermovement jump (CMJ) versus squat jump (SJ) when beginning the movement by responding to auditory (AUD) versus visual (VIS) stimuli. The secondary purposes of this investigation are to examine gender and physical activity level differences of the aforementioned metrics and the relationship between maximal strength, REACT, and RT. However, conventional surfactants raise environmental concerns, and emulsions may encounter stability challenges during storage. The objectives of the study were to create a scoring system to assess maternal behavior within 24-h of calving in crossbred beef cows; determine the impact of maternal scores on cow productive responses and evaluate how maternal score varies over animal lifetime; and assess the effect of maternal aggression and perceived mothering ability on calf survivability and growth performance. Calving observations (n = 1,832) were conducted across 12 calf crops from 2017 to 2022 from 680 unique crossbred cows at the Prairie Research Unit, Prairie, MS. Through enhancing aerosol particle measurement accuracy by determining particle shape factors using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) combined with machine learning techniques, this study aims to provide a methodology that will improve the precision of aerosol measurements and contribute to the development of more effective filtration technologies. This dissertation focuses on exploring catalytic puzzles, deciphering experimental results, and occasionally, reevaluating conventional concepts. In the first problem, a combination of DFT and kinetic studies uncovers the hidden role of borane in directed borylation reactions catalyzed by iridium complex. The southeastern U.S. is a hotspot of aquatic biodiversity and endemism in the upland and Coastal Plain regions. One component of this biodiversity is the Pygmy Sunfishes of the genus Elassoma. I used next-generation sequencing to aid in the understanding and conservation of these enigmatic fish. My first chapter focused on one of the most restricted species in the U.S. the Spring Pygmy Sunfish Elassoma alabamae. In this study I found four distinct genetic populations, evidence of founder effects, and that a newly discovered population is native. This dissertation investigated attrition rates of engineers in the industry. It used historical data to examine trends of attrition based on gender and time. It found that both gender and time were statistically significant in predicting whether an engineer would be working in the industry or not. Males with an engineering degree were 5.2 times more likely to work in the engineering industry than females with an engineering degree. Additionally, as engineers progress through the profession, they tend to leave it altogether more often than staying in the profession for their entire careers. The Food Safety Modernization Act has enforced the importance of research in preventative and control measures for known hazards. Experiment 1 applies existing statistical models, Linear and Weibull, to Escherichia coli thermal inactivation in broiler mash feed in a lab-based circulating water bath to simulate conditioning. Linear and Weibull models were determined to be suitable for modeling the thermal inactivation of E. coli in broiler feed. In Experiment 2, a Salmonella challenge model for broilers raised in floor pens in the updated Animal Biosafety Level-2 facility was evaluated over a 42-day grow-out period. The Western Mississippi Sound (WMS) is home to the largest natural oyster reef in the Gulf of Mexico and contributes substantially to Mississippi's economy. In 2019, the WMS experienced an unprecedented cyanobacterial bloom that killed fish and birds and led to shut down of beaches and oyster fishery. This thesis aims to quantify cyanobacteria from uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) imagery and investigate the relative influence of river discharge into the WMS on cyanobacterial concentrations. Boron treated test houses at Mississippi State University’s Dorman Lake test site in Starkville, MS were built in 1989 to investigate the effectiveness of boron treatments with exposure to natural weathering. After being undisturbed for more than 20 years, samples were taken to evaluate the remaining levels of original treatments in the test houses. Visual evaluation of the test structures, curcumin test, and ICP-MS analysis of the borate content shows borates are a capable and effective long-term treatment for wood used in construction. No appreciable damage due to termite feeding was observed. Boron was still detectable by curcumin staining and …

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relation of sexual attitudes and knowledge on risky sexual behavior (RSB), while including sex, sexual double standards (SDS), and conservative religiosity as moderators. Findings suggested that sexual knowledge, sexual attitudes, and conservative religiosity associated negatively with RSB for female participants. SDS positively associated with RSB for male participants. The interaction of sexual knowledge and SDS on RSB was significant in male participants and indicated that higher sexual knowledge is associated with higher RSB when SDS is higher. In the United States, Indigenous language loss is the result of colonization and deliberate eradication by government policies. Many tribal communities engage in activities to curb language shift, including language reclamation or revitalization to restore the vitality of Indigenous languages. Schools for Indigenous children, once the setting for the destruction of their Indigenous identity and language, have increasingly become the medium for language reclamation. A complex multi-vector processed beef value stream was biomapped and work-in-process (WIP) was sampled at various processing points that affected the product microbiome. Coliform Petrifilm™ was used to analyze samples qualitatively and quantitatively across the meat and glaze vectors. There was an impact (p≤0.05) of the glaze distribution system on coliforms. The pumps of the glaze system were fully disassembled and additional microbial data were obtained through swabbing. WIP and sponge samples were subjected to 16S V1/V2 gene amplification with primers designed for taxonomic identification. Nutrient loss has been a problem in the agricultural field for as long as fertilizers have been used. Not only is it cost inefficient, it can be an environmental hazard when these nutrients enter the watershed. Biochar, both untreated and treated, have been shown to improve soil’s ability to retain nutrients and increase residency time. However, the sorption capacity of biochar when amended with different soil types, has not been explored sufficiently. Radio frequency interference (RFI) poses significant challenges for passive microwave radiometry used in climate studies and Earth science. Despite operating in protected frequency bands, microwave radiometers often encounter RFI from sources like air surveillance radars, 5G communications, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Traditional RFI detection methods rely on handcrafted algorithms designed for specific RFI types. This study proposes a deep learning (DL) approach, leveraging convolutional neural networks to detect various RFI types on a global scale. By learning directly from radiometer data, this data-driven method enhances detection accuracy and generalization. The DL framework processes raw moment data and Stokes parameters, dynamically …
