Effects Of Acute Alcohol Treatment On Macrophage Polarization, Liyuan Liu
Effects Of Acute Alcohol Treatment On Macrophage Polarization, Liyuan Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol is an underestimated toxicant, and binge drinking is increasing rapidly. Macrophages are important immune cells characterized by heterogeneity and can be polarized into pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory phenotypes. To elucidate the effects of acute alcohol exposure on macrophage polarization and function, we established an optimized multi-parameter flow cytometry panel, assessed the impact of acute alcohol on macrophage polarization, developed macrophage polarization models, and proposed novel indices for a refined understanding of macrophage polarization status.First, we developed a flow cytometry panel quantifying eleven markers critical to macrophage polarization within the RAW 264.7 cell line. Inducing specific polarization states with IFN-γ ± LPS …

Evaluation Of Copper Sulfate Treatment To Preclude Hatching Of Trematode Eggs, With Notes On The Influence Of Temperature On Miracidial Development And Hatching Of Drepanocephalus Spathans., Logan R. S. Robison
Theses and Dissertations
Catfish aquaculture remains the largest sector of the U.S. aquaculture industry, grossing ~$447 million in sales in 2022. Producers are plagued by annual losses associated with the trematode Bolbophorus damnificus. Management focuses on controlling the snail intermediate hosts using copper sulfate. Herein, the effects of copper on larval stages of the trematode Drepanocephalus spathans and Austrodiplostomum compactum eggs were investigated. Results indicate copper treatments currently used to control snails are ineffective at precluding hatching of trematode eggs. Higher doses prevented trematode eggs from hatching, although these levels are likely impractical in a commercial setting. A second study investigated the effects …
Evolution Of Functional Diversity In Defensive Bacterial Toxins And Parasite Infection Strategy, Logan D. Moore
Evolution Of Functional Diversity In Defensive Bacterial Toxins And Parasite Infection Strategy, Logan D. Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Insects and their natural enemies are engaged in a never-ending battle called the ‘co-evolutionary arms race.’ As a part of these contentious interactions, vulnerable insects evolve natural barriers that prevent successful attacks by their natural enemies. In response, natural enemies evolve strategies that overcome these barriers. Occasionally, microbial symbionts will also participate in these relationships by assisting their insect host in defense against natural enemies or by assisting the natural enemy in subduing its prey. Alternatively, microbial symbionts may become contenders themselves in the co-evolutionary arms race by becoming reproductive parasites of their hosts. To mediate successful outcomes in these …

Chitosan-Based Biomaterials For Treatment Of Acute And Chronic Osteomyelitis, Luke Jackson Tucker
Chitosan-Based Biomaterials For Treatment Of Acute And Chronic Osteomyelitis, Luke Jackson Tucker
Theses and Dissertations
Osteomyelitis or infection of bone is painful and difficult to treat due to limited tissue penetration by antibiotics. A resulting chronic infection has around a 30% chance of never resolving and resulting in amputation of the limb. The current standard of care for osteomyelitis is debridement and systemic antibiotics for two to six months, which can cause systemic toxicity and increase the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It is therefore necessary to develop a localized biodegradable treatment that can deliver high concentrations of antimicrobials while minimizing the risk of systemic side effects. The overall objective of this work was to develop, …
An Evaluation Of Avian Use Of Marsh Terraces In Gulf Coastal Wetlands Of Louisiana, Madelyn Belle Mcfarland
An Evaluation Of Avian Use Of Marsh Terraces In Gulf Coastal Wetlands Of Louisiana, Madelyn Belle Mcfarland
Theses and Dissertations
Louisiana’s coastal wetlands support millions of resident and migratory birds annually but account for 80% of the nation’s coastal wetland loss. Marsh terracing is a restoration technique that constructs segmented ridges in open water areas to enhance marsh conditions. Despite widespread use, their value as avian habitat has received limited study. Using ground and aerial surveys, we evaluated avian use of marsh terraces across 24 paired sites (marsh terrace and non-terrace sites) in coastal Louisiana. Avian surveys focused on breeding secretive marsh birds (SMB) and wintering waterfowl. Results indicate that presence or absence of marsh terraces influenced numbers of ducks …

Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo
Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo
Theses and Dissertations
It has been well-established in the literature that a history of concussion makes individuals more susceptible to sustaining subsequent concussions. However, there is little neuropsychological evidence of how sustaining multiple lifetime concussions affects cognitive functioning in the general adult population. It is known from previous traumatic brain injury and single concussion literature that impairments in cognitive performance across domains often follow the initial injury, and exploratory studies have shown that multiple concussions can have a measurable impact on cognition. However, existing research is often limited by its reliance on archival data and abbreviated neuropsychological batteries. Therefore, the current study aimed …

Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay
Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay
Theses and Dissertations
Men experience high rates of negative health outcomes and often have difficulty identifying and seeking support for their issues. Traditional masculine socialization has been identified as a potential determinant of this effect, as masculine ideals often conflict with prosocial help-seeking behaviors. Men who experience this sort of socialization need better support for their mental health and are less likely to seek it out in a professional setting. Therefore, other models of support, like social support, should be investigated. Additionally, factors that impact the way that men perceive social support should be explored, one of which may be self-compassion. The current …

Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell
Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell
Theses and Dissertations
The depiction of people with disabilities in American literature has varied considerably throughout the twentieth century. In the south in particular, disabled individuals have been portrayed as violent, licentious, and deceitful. This thesis examines three hallmarks of American southern literature—Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary, and the short stories of Flannery O’Connor—to demonstrate the anxiety of that era surrounding disability, as well as how disability works in tandem with race and class. The fixation of these works on the sexual immorality of disabled men reflects the fascination with eugenics in the mid-twentieth century, as do their animalistic …
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
The parenting literature has long explored the influence that socioeconomic status has on parenting practices, but more recent theorists have suggested that contextual factors may influence or explain this relation in some capacity. The current study sought to explore the influence of these contextual factors within a nationwide sample of caregiving grandparents. The results indicate that grandparental financial well-being, depressive symptoms, scarcity of resources, and grandparenting practices share significant associations. Further, contextual factors (i.e., grandparental depressive symptoms and access to resources) mediate the relation between financial well-being and both the positive and negative grandparenting practices that are employed. These findings …
