Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller
Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. Upon proportionate increase of the medium composition, there was no decrease in growth rates or in biomass yields …
Cognitive Processes In Depression., Sally Ann Davis
Cognitive Processes In Depression., Sally Ann Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hypotheses derived from Beck's cognitive theory of depression were tested using 60 depressed and non-depressed males and females as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory. Subjects rated their performance before and after they received "positive," "negative," and "neutral" feedback regarding their performance on a social interaction task. They were also asked to recall feedback they received and explain reasons for their post-feedback self-rating. Results showed depressed males and females had a more negative evaluation of present circumstances and poorer memory for feedback. Further, depressed males lowered their self-evaluation upon feedback significantly more than did non-depressed males. In addition, depressed males …
Music Criticism In The New York Times And The New York Tribune, 1851-1876., Mark Curtis Mcknight
Music Criticism In The New York Times And The New York Tribune, 1851-1876., Mark Curtis Mcknight
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Reports and comments on daily events in newspapers provide an invaluable tool in the study of a particular period or area of research. This study is concerned with the music reviews in two New York newspapers, the Times and the Tribune, between 1851 and 1876. This period in the history of the United States was above all one of transition. Social upheaval prevailed as a result of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. In addition, America was rapidly gaining ascendancy in science, technology, and as a major political power. This evolution at the broader national level was accompanied …

Group Influence And Cognitive Consistency As Determinants Of Value Change: A Methodological Analysis Of Self-Confrontation Theory., Mark L. Paris
Group Influence And Cognitive Consistency As Determinants Of Value Change: A Methodological Analysis Of Self-Confrontation Theory., Mark L. Paris
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study attempted to either extend, modify or challenge Rokeach's (1973) Self-confrontation theory of value change. Rokeach (1973) found that subjects who were confronted with specific self-confrontation messages, which were designed to make differences between their value systems and self-concepts salient, were more likely than control subjects to change the rank-ordering of the values Freedom and Equality in a ranking task containing 18 values. Rokeach explained this phenomenon by invoking the concept of self-dissatisfaction, which he said subjects came to feel as a result of being exposed to the self-confrontation messages. The present study compared this explanation with the …

In general, levels of soil Ca, Mg, and K were significantly correlated with extractable Cu. …
The Piano Trio In London From 1791 To 1800., Howard Lee Irving
The Piano Trio In London From 1791 To 1800., Howard Lee Irving
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The late piano trios of Joseph Haydn, which were published in London during his two trips there in 1791 and 1794, are neglected and misunderstood works. This study examines Haydn's late trios in the light of other works of the same type which were published for the same audience, in order to gain a clearer perspective of this repertoire. A variety of cultural and economic factors influenced the music considered in this study. In particular, the presence in London of a large class of affluent but relatively unsophisticated musical amateurs provided a lucrative outlet for composers who could satisfy the …

Development And Applications Of Gas Chromatography - Atomic Absorption Interface Instrumentation., Eric Leon Kiesel
Development And Applications Of Gas Chromatography - Atomic Absorption Interface Instrumentation., Eric Leon Kiesel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is being recognized that we are exposed to increasing numbers of poorly understood and potentially toxic substances within our environment. To understand fully the human health effects and environmental impact of these hazards, complete chemical characterization or "speciation" studies of these hazards is necessary. Once exposure to a toxic substance has occurred, the physical and chemical form will determine the length of time a compound will remain in the environment and the types of chemical reactions that will occur in atmospheric, aquatic, and soil environments. Physiological and toxicological effects are also dependent upon the chemical form and physical form. …

Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. When d‐amphetamine was administered alone, the overall response rate decreased and the percent errors increased with increasing doses. When a small dose of chlorpromazine, which was ineffective when given alone, was administered in combination with d‐amphetamine, the rate‐decreasing effect was antagonized. The antagonism was selective, however, in that the error‐increasing effect of d‐amprotamine was augmented by chlorpromazine. The nature of the joint effect of the two drugs thus …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On Strained Ratio Behavior In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. When the fixed‐ratio requirement for food presentation was five completions of the chain, d‐amphetamine and cocaine disrupted the behavior. As the dose of each drug was increased, the overall response rate decreased, the overall accuracy was impaired (i.e., percent errors increased), and there was less within‐session error reduction (acquisition). In contrast, when the fixed‐ratio requirement was either 20 or 50 completions of the chain, certain doses of both drugs produced large increases in the overall response rate by eliminating the …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
In each of three components of a multiple schedule, monkeys were required to emit a different sequence of four responses in a predetermined order on four levers. Sequence completions produced food on a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout. One component of the multiple schedule was a repeated‐acquisition task where the four‐response sequence changed each session (learning). The second component of the multiple schedule was also a repeated‐acquisition task, but acquisition was supported through the use of a stimulus‐fading procedure (faded learning). In a third component of the multiple schedule, the sequence of responses remained the same from session …

To ascertain current approaches of physicians to nutritional-hygienic management of hypertensive patients and their children, a survey was done among a random sample of Chicago-area generalists, internists, and cardiologists. Thirteen items related to advice for patients; two for their children. Of 713 physicians holding M.D. degrees in the sample, 573 (80%) responded. For hypertensive patients, the great majority of physicians indicated that they advise weight loss, avoidance of salt use at table, no smoking, regular exercise, limitation of alcohol intake, and avoidance of stressful situations. Although 98% advised weight loss, a minority responded positively to reduction of carbohydrate and/or fat …
