The Association Between Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children, R. Cooper, I. Soltero, K. Liu, D. Berkson, S. Levinson, J. Stamler
Faculty Publications
This study explored the association between sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP). A new method was used to minimize the measurement error introduced by the large intrinsic variability of 24-hour sodium excretion. The ratio of intra- to interindividual variation was used to estimate the number of measurements needed to characterize the individual. When seven consecutive 24-hour samples were collected from 73 children, ages 11-14 years, a significant correlation between mean individual sodium excretion and BP was demonstrated. The independent relationship persisted when controlling for height, weight, pulse, age, sex and race (p = 0.045), but was eliminated by simultaneously considering …

The Conversion Of Manganese (Ii) Oxide To Manganese (Ii) Sulfide: Effect Of Variable Solid Properties. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Anthony Caillet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study of the effect of variable solid properties on the kinetics of the reaction of spherical manganous oxide pellets with hydrogen sulfide gas was performed. This study resulted in a major modification of the grain model to allow for radial solid property variations due to reaction and/or sintering. It was shown that this new model did the original constant property grain model. A complete experimental study was made of the effects of exposure to high temperatures (sintering) and the effects of the reaction itself on the structural properties, notably the specific surface area and porosity, of the solid reactant …
Soot Formation From Toluene., Ten-See Wang
Soot Formation From Toluene., Ten-See Wang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Synthetic fuels will likely have a higher aromatic content than petroleum-based fuels. This aromatic character will result in increased soot formation and increased flame radiation. Since the kinetics of soot formation is poorly understood, it is very difficult to design combustors using aromatic fuels. A laser beam attenuation technique was utilized to study the kinetics of soot formation from toluene and other selected fuels over the temperature range 1400-2500 K and the pressure range 2.5-10 atmospheres. Detailed soot yield studies show that the aromaticity of the hydrocarbons determines their sooting characteristics. At low temperatures, the condensation, polymerization, and dehydrogenation are …

With Ground Teeth: A Study Of Flannery O'Connor's Women., Mary Lambert Morton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Eighteen of Flannery O'Connor's short stories feature women as protagonists or antagonists. Of the remaining thirteen stories in the canon, four are assimilated into her novel Wise Blood. This study, then, encompasses the entire O'Connor canon with the exceptions of the novel The Violent Bear It Away and eight short stories, since one of the remaining nine stories is a part of The Violent Bear It Away. The majority, then, of O'Connor's short stories feature women in leading roles. Even those in supporting roles seem prominent. With the women in Wise Blood, they dramatize O'Connor's special vision of comedy and …

From Disgrace To Dignity - The Louisiana Leper Home, 1894-1921, Charles Hilary Calandro
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The care and treatment of lepers at the Louisiana Leper Home from 1894 to 1921 was based essentially upon both Biblical and medieval precedents, the chief of which was the belief that leprosy was incurable and its victims should be isolated. Accordingly, the state medical profession believed that leprous cases should be isolated and treated to prevent further spread of the disease, while the lay community favored their isolation to remove the public's economic and social fears. The creation of an asylum at a rundown plantation in Iberville Parish represented the practical application of this belief. On the one hand, …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An adult population survey of 4 species of the noctuid subfamily Plusiinae was conducted in soybean ecosystems of south, south central and north central Louisiana. Sticky-traps baited with the synthetic sex pheromone (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol acetate, or looplure, were used as the sampling tools for 2 soybean growing seasons. The soybean looper Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) reached the highest densities of the plusiine complex with 4 and 5 generations detected in the southern and central regions of the state. Moth density was greatest at Krotz Springs (south central site) during 1977 and 1978; the lowest levels were detected at Niblett (southern site). Males …

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Relationships Between Self-Images, Perceived-Risk, And Purchase Intention Horizons., Corbett Fay Gaulden Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine in some detail the nature of some commonly acknowledged psychological constructs related to consumer behavior. These constructs, perceptual in nature, are self-image and perceived risk. In addition, a third concept of more recent vintage was included: purchase intention expectations, or more simply time perceptions. The focus of the study was an exploration of interrelationships among the three constructs. The following objectives were specified: (1) to analyze the relationship between self-image and ideal self-image across a group of products, across time, and as this relationship relates to risk, (2) to investigate the relationships …

Perceptions Of The Role Of Corporate Audit Committees - Now And In The Future., Brenda Stewart Birkett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Changes in the economy have brought about attempts to improve the structure of the corporate organization and the quality of corporate financial reporting. One such attempt has been to increase the responsibilities of corporate boards of directors, and subcommittees to handle specific duties of the board have been established. The audit committee is one of these subcommittees and is now required for all companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The corporate audit committee should make a significant contribution toward improving the integrity and credibility of financial statements and the overall corporate image in the public sector. To accomplish …

Effects Of Flooding Dates And Disposals Of Rice Straw On Crayfish, Procambarus Clarkii (Girard), Culture In Rice Field., Yew-Hu Chien
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies were conducted to determine the effects of flooding dates and different disposals of rice straw on crayfish culture in rice field. Nutritional composition of decayed rice straw, periphyton growth, and water quality were also determined. Eighteen earthen ponds were randomly assigned to six treatments in a two by three factorial arrangement: early flooding (20/Sept/1978), late flooding (15/Oct/78), and aerobic (baled), anaerobic (disked), partially aerobic (standing) decomposition of rice straw with three replications each. The average crayfish production in early-flooded ponds (1183 kg/ha) did not differ significantly from that in late-flooded ponds (1127 kg/ha). Significant differences (P < 0.05) in average crayfish production were found between standing ponds (1506 kg/ha) and disked ponds (803 kg/ha), and between baled ponds (1157 kg/ha) and disked ponds. The average crayfish production in standing ponds was not significantly higher than in baled ponds. von Bertalanffy's growth model revealed that all crayfish in early-flooded ponds attained an average maximum length (1(,00)) and Brody's growth coefficient (k) of 92.2 mm and 0.55, respectively, whereas all crayfish in late-flooded ponds had an 1(,00) and k of 82.7 mm and 0.09. Crayfish in disked ponds showed the poorest growth of all treatments. Late-flooded ponds had a higher population density than early flooded ponds. The population density was highest in baled ponds followed by standing and disked ponds. The harvestable crayfish size (total length > 75 mm) in …
Cyclometallated Compounds Of Palladium(Ii), Rhodium(Iii), And Iridium(Iii)., Michael Anthony Gutierrez
Cyclometallated Compounds Of Palladium(Ii), Rhodium(Iii), And Iridium(Iii)., Michael Anthony Gutierrez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A number of new complex compounds of palladium, gold, rhodium, iridium, and platinum have been synthesized and characterized. The organic ligands used in the preponderance of reactions involve some nitrogen heterocycle such as 2-arylpyridines, 2,6-diarylpyridines, benzo{h}quinoline, and caffeine. In most cases, the organic ligand underwent an intramolecular metallation (designated "orthometallation" or more generally "cyclometallation") with subsequent formation of a chelate ring containing a covalent metal to carbon bond. The effect of varying the substituents on the aryl moiety of the 2-arylpyridines supported the hypothesis that after initial N-complexation, the 2-position of the aryl nucleus experiences an electrophilic attack by the …

The Structure Elucidation Of Germacranolide Sesquiterpene Lactones Of The Genus Melampodium By Chemical And Spectral Methods., Errol Joseph Olivier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The isolation and structure elucidation of two 4,5-dihydrogermacranolides, 9-acetoxymelnerin A (32a) and B (33a), from Melampodium leucanthum Torr. and Gray are reported. Sodium borohydride reduction of 32a proceeds with, besides saturation of the lactonic exocyclic methylene, loss of the C-9 acetoxy group via migration of the 1(10) double bond to the 9,10 position. Pyridinium chlorochromate oxidation of the C-15 primary alcohol function provides the expected aldehyde as the minor product with the major product being a ketone formed by a C-4 to C-15 shift of C-5 of the ten-membered ring, resulting in an eleven-membered ring skeleton. The nucleophilic reactions of …

Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray
Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Speechwriting practices have long been associated with rhetorical history. American presidents have employed the speechwriter's assistance since the beginning of this nation. From the dawn of radio, presidential speechwriting practices have grown to the extent that most presidents rely heavily on the writer to prepare the bulk of their messages. While many political speakers have grown to depend on the speechwriter to assist him in preparing the ideas or language of his message, rhetorical critics have largely ignored the writer's influence on the message and his impact on the preparation process. The purpose of this study is fourfold. First of …
