A Genetic Study Of Early And Total Yield Of The Tomato, Lycopersicon Esculentum., Charles Edward Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Experiments were conducted in 1979 to determine the genetic and environmental influences on early and total yield in segregating populations of several tomato crosses. Five tomato breeding parents were used that showed considerable differences in total yield and earliness. L401, an early maturing breeding parent, was crossed with L414, a late maturing breeding parent, to study inheritance of earliness. The cross of 'VF65-433', a midseason maturing cultivar, and L401 was also used to study this character. The F(,1) hybrid of both crosses produced as many ripe fruit as the early parent, L401. The late maturing parent, L414, was significantly lower …

Investigation Of Effects Of Hypnosis, Relaxation, And Mental Rehearsal On Performance Scores Of Golfers And Runners., Julie Nelson Jan 1980

Investigation Of Effects Of Hypnosis, Relaxation, And Mental Rehearsal On Performance Scores Of Golfers And Runners., Julie Nelson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefit of hypnotic techniques, relaxation, and mental rehearsal for improvement in performance scores for golfers and runners. Treatments were designed to be similar to interventions reported to be successful with individual athletes yet unsupported by larger investigations. No significant results were obtained for either sport. Explanations for obtained results included an actual absence of true effect, masking of effects by continuing methodological problems in the area of athletics and hypnosis, and the lack of generalizability of positive effect. Well controlled, indepth case studies were recommended for future investigation.

An Administrative Study Of The Duchy Of Cornwall, 1500-1650., Graham Haslam

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study traces the political, economic and administrative history of the duchy of Cornwall from 1500 until abolished by the government in 1650. It held an important, though autonomous place in the early Tudor constitution. Henry VII consolidated its political and economic dominance of southwestern England by reorganisation of its administrative structure to ensure that effective authority devolved from the monarch to the Warden of the stannaries, the duchy's principal officer. Henry VIII extended the duchy's influence in the Southwest in 1540 by significantly augmenting its landed estates in Cornwall. In the early-modern period the duchy contributed financially and politically …

The Enzymology Of Methylation And Primary Structural Analysis Of Selected Phenylalanine Transfer-Rnas., James Joseph Schnabel Jan 1980

The Enzymology Of Methylation And Primary Structural Analysis Of Selected Phenylalanine Transfer-Rnas., James Joseph Schnabel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A tRNA (adenine-1)-methyltransferase from wheat germ was partially purified 9.6-fold and used to methylate tRNA('Phe) from E. coli. The site of methylation was determined to be the invariant adenine in the T(psi)C loop as revealed by sequence analysis of a pancreatic RNase digest, post-labelled with {(gamma)-('32)P}ATP. The elucidation of this site was preceded by studies on the enzyme itself, with bulk E. coli tRNA used as the substrate. Enzyme optima were determined for pH, temperature, {putrescine} and {magnesium}. Respective values were 7.5, 37(DEGREES)C, 20 mM, and an inactivation as the magnesium concentration was increased. Kinetic parameters at pH 7.5 were …

Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland Jan 1980

Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although Jack London is recognized as one of the most popular American fiction writers in the world, critics of American literary naturalism have tended to rank him considerably below the other well-known naturalists: Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, and Theodore Dreiser. The consensus has been that London wrote too much, too hastily, and weakened his art by imposing "ideas" (Darwinian, Spencerian, Nietzschean, Marxian) upon his narratives. However, in recent years a serious reevaluation of "the boy wonder of the naturalist carnival" has begun. As a master of the action narrative, Jack London, who both mirrored his age and anticipated later twentieth-century …

The Occurrence Of Alliinase In Selected Bacterial Strains., Lawrence A. Reily Jan 1980

The Occurrence Of Alliinase In Selected Bacterial Strains., Lawrence A. Reily

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Alliinases have been studied in animals and plants, but relatively little attention has been given to bacterial alliinases. Therefore, an investigation was initiated to determine the prevalence and nature of alliinase systems in bacteria. A method of determining alliinase activity in bacteria was developed. The procedure was based on qualitative or quantitative detection of allicin, by a color reaction with N-ethylmaleimide. Alliinase was found to be present in some strains and absent in others. In still other strains, alliinase seemed to be a variable characteristic. It was speculated that alliin cleavage in bacteria might be accomplished via an inducible cystathionase. …

Drum drying of the product did not significantly reduce lysine levels, 90% being biologically available in most samples. Products with good biological value as measured by PER in excess of 2.0 were …

Speciation Of Environmental Pollutants By Gc-Aa And By Esca. Purification Of Water At Ultratrace Levels Of Heavy Metals And Complexation Studies By Electrochemical Methods., Ileana Aurea-Leon Rhodes Jan 1980

Speciation Of Environmental Pollutants By Gc-Aa And By Esca. Purification Of Water At Ultratrace Levels Of Heavy Metals And Complexation Studies By Electrochemical Methods., Ileana Aurea-Leon Rhodes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Speciation of environmental pollutants is essential for potential toxicity evaluations. It is important to determine what is the original chemical form of the pollutant when released in the environment as well as all possible reaction products and their potential hazards. The media through which these pollutants are transported in the environment are also of importance. Heavy metal pollutants usually occur in very low concentrations in the environment, therefore, very sensitive techniques are required for the determination of these metals. A GC-AA method was developed that allowed the simultaneous determination of PbEt(,4) and of PbEt(,3)Cl in gaseous and liquid samples. This …

Geojurisprudence: Studies In Law, Liberty, And Landscapes., Ernest St. Clair Easterly Iii Jan 1980

Geojurisprudence: Studies In Law, Liberty, And Landscapes., Ernest St. Clair Easterly Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Every culture must generally possess an order that is either deliberately created (human design) or the result of experience (human action). Two ordering forces, Human Design and Human Action, manifest themselves in the form of laws and legal systems which govern the individuals who form the thus ordered civil society. The Anglo-American Common Law family of legal systems and the Romano-Germanic Civil Law family of legal systems basically reflect the ordering forces of Human Action and Human Design, respectively. Because laws and legal systems leave the imprint of sovereign authority on the landscape, the study of the culture history and …

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco Jan 1980

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the underlying dimensions of social behavior of infant monkeys. Three species of mother-infant dyad-reared monkeys were studied: crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis), rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), and patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). In addition, the behavior of crab-eating macaques reared in mother-sibling-infant triads and in nuclear family triads was investigated. Independent maximum likelihood factor analyses of the mother-oriented and peer-oriented behavior of each of the five groups yielded seven factors, five of which were grossly similar across groups: social play, maternal comfort and care, affiliation, mother-oriented social play, and social exploration. The remaining two factors were not consistent …

The purpose of the study was to compare the standing long jump, place kick, overarm throw and striking patterns of educable mentally retarded children to the mature patterns of highly skilled individuals. It was also the purpose of this study to determine if these same motor patterns were inherent in educable mentally retarded subjects and to determine if these patterns would emerge naturally in a goal-centered teaching-learning environment. Eleven educable mentally retarded children between the ages of five and eight years were selected to participate in the study. The children participated in a one week (fifteen minutes per day) orientation …

The Solution To Single Kink Solitary Wave Transport For Systems Described By A Generalized Frenkel-Kontorova Equation., Louis William Adams Jr Jan 1980

The Solution To Single Kink Solitary Wave Transport For Systems Described By A Generalized Frenkel-Kontorova Equation., Louis William Adams Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A numerical procedure to solve the differential equation for solitary waves via iteration for a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model is presented. The generalization consists of adding a constant force proportional to particle velocity. The equation of motion is cast into integral form using a Green's function. The introductory chapter briefly reviews recent progress in nonlinear dynamics using the sine-Gordon equation as an example. Emphasis is placed on the concept of "non-linear modes" and its relevance in theoretical descriptions of transport processes. After a second chapter defining the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova equation, its dimensionless reparametrization and an outline of the iteration scheme, the …

The Solution Properties Of Transfer Ribonucleic Acids And Their Distribution In Tumor Cells., Kathryn Seyler Aultman Jan 1980

The Solution Properties Of Transfer Ribonucleic Acids And Their Distribution In Tumor Cells., Kathryn Seyler Aultman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Partial digestion of native tRNA molecles with P(,1) nuclease under conditions which take advantage of the differences in kinetic parameters of this enzyme for various substrates has been performed. Under these conditions the two conformers of yeast tRNA(,3)('Leu) give different digestion patterns, indicating that P(,1) nuclease is sensitive to structural features of its substrate. Comparison of the digestion pattern of tRNA('Phe) from yeast with its known three-dimensional structure shows that stem and loop regions can be distinguished and that twelve of the twenty residues involved in tertiary hydrogen bonding interactions can be detected. Extrapolation of the tertiary structure of tRNA('Phe) …

Theory And Tests Of The Effect Of Financial Leverage On Valuation Of The Banking Firm., Donald Malcolm Chance Jan 1980

Theory And Tests Of The Effect Of Financial Leverage On Valuation Of The Banking Firm., Donald Malcolm Chance

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of financial leverage on valuation and shareholder wealth of the banking firm was examined both theoretically and empirically. It was assumed that market imperfections made possible the creation of a bank which would operate in capital, loan, and deposit markets. The valuation of equity shares was assumed to be described by Black's zero-beta version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Although the Black model is a perfect market model, it served as a framework within which imperfections could be introduced. A firm operating in a market without an intermediary was converted to a bank, charged with the responsibility …
