Quality Evaluation Of Some Combinations Of Unit Uniform Random Number Generators And Unit Normal Transformation Algorithms., Win-Yeu Winnie Chen
Quality Evaluation Of Some Combinations Of Unit Uniform Random Number Generators And Unit Normal Transformation Algorithms., Win-Yeu Winnie Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Due to the wide applications of normal random variates and the fact that applications are usually affected by their accuracy, an extensive study of the quality evaluation of unit uniform random number generators and unit normal transformation algorithms that are applications specific is recommended. In most simulation applications it is implicitly assumed that if any "good" unit uniform random number generator is used in combination with any "good" transformation algorithm. The resulting random variates will have good properties of randomness and will have the desired fit. The results of this research shows that this assumption is false. Use of good, …
Dynamics Of Flow In The Region Of The Tsugaru Strait., Dennis Michael Conlon
Dynamics Of Flow In The Region Of The Tsugaru Strait., Dennis Michael Conlon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Tsugaru Strait is one of four straits that connect the Sea of Japan to adjacent oceans. Flow dynamics in the Tsugaru Strait region are closely tied to the dynamics of the Tsushima Current, a branch of the Kuroshio that enters the Sea of Japan through the Korea Strait and exits through the Tsugaru and Soya Straits. This research concentrates on the dynamic interplay of the Tsushima Current and the Tsugaru Strait in three regions: the inflow region (Sea of Japan side), the strait itself, and the outflow region (North Pacific side). Dynamic calculations and steric sea leveling in the …
Degree Of Handicap And Adjustment In Children With Cerebral Palsy., Robert Nolan Cuyler
Degree Of Handicap And Adjustment In Children With Cerebral Palsy., Robert Nolan Cuyler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A review of the literature on physical disability reveals competing viewpoints on the relationship between degree of severity of handicap and adjustment. Several studies report that severely disabled individuals exhibit more serious adjustment problems than the mildly handicapped, due to the social reactions to the visibility of deficits and to reductions in functioning and coping due to brain dysfunction. Other research efforts report the opposite relationship and hypothesize that the "marginal" position of mildly handicapped individuals leads to inconsistent and confusing expectations and resultant psychopathology. Sampling and assessment difficulties with these studies, especially in regard to the heterogeneity of experimental …
The Effect Of Attribution Training And Visual Response Cues On Persistence Following Failure., Renee Favret
The Effect Of Attribution Training And Visual Response Cues On Persistence Following Failure., Renee Favret
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Achievement motivation and locus of control in black children attending a public school in an economically-depressed area of New Orleans, Louisiana were studied. Past research had found contradictory results regarding locus of control in students who are lacking in achievement motivation. Dweck (1975) suggested that these students were "learned helpless," i.e. they perceived their achievement outcomes to be due to external causes; that these same students could be trained to attribute outcomes to internal causes; and that this attribution training would lead to persistence following failure on achievement tasks. The present study investigated the locus of control of 130 fifth- …
The Unfleshed Eye: A Study Of Intellectual Theism In The Poetry And Criticism Of Yvor Winters., John Martin Finlay
The Unfleshed Eye: A Study Of Intellectual Theism In The Poetry And Criticism Of Yvor Winters., John Martin Finlay
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Yvor Winters' early poetry, from 1920 to 1928, was written in free-verse; the aesthetic principles governing it centered on the image "purified" of conceptual content, and consisting of a "fusion" between the natural object being described and the poet's own mind. The result is a kind of naturalistic mysticism, destructive of judgements and evaluations of the conscious intellect. The early poetry also registers the effect of certain scientific theories on Winters' mind; these theories were mechanistic and deterministic in nature, and they turned Winters' world into one in which moral and intellectual values had no reality. Other themes that appear …
Genetic Variance, Heritability And Correlation For Genetic Characters Of The Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas, L., Florencio Ando Saladaga
Genetic Variance, Heritability And Correlation For Genetic Characters Of The Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas, L., Florencio Ando Saladaga
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Polycross progeny tests and comparisons of advanced seedlings (cultivars) were conducted in 1978 and 1979 to determine the genetic variance, heritability and correlations of several characters in the sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, L. In 1978, 41.8% of the 'L0-323' polycross seedling progeny had copper or rose skin colors and 2.4% had root yields higher than the highest yielding parent plants. In the 1979 polycross progeny test, estimates of heritability for root skin and flesh color were both very low. Root skin color was positively correlated with yield of US #1 roots, total yield of fleshy roots, vine length, and vine …
A Validity Study Of The Construct "Most Highly Valued Representational System" In Human Auditory And Visual Perceptions., David E. Lange
A Validity Study Of The Construct "Most Highly Valued Representational System" In Human Auditory And Visual Perceptions., David E. Lange
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bandler and Grinder (1975) proposed the construct "most highly valued representational systems" to describe auditory, visual, and kinesthetic perceptual orientations among individuals. They set forth a predicate method for determining an individual's primary representational system. Contrary to Bandler and Grinder's construct, experimental evidence consistently supports the principle of visual dominance among humans. In order to test the effectiveness of Bandler and Grinder's constructs, 221 volunteers were screened by an alternate predicate method. 22 subjects were selected as "highly auditory" and 19 subjects were selected as "highly visual." These 41 subjects were asked to give their first impressions to 75 simultaneous, …

The "Southern Review": An Episode In Southern Intellectual History, 1935-1942., Ronda Cabot Tentarelli
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of the Southern Review, a cultural quarterly published at Louisiana State University from 1935 to 1942, and edited by Charles Pipkin, Cleanth Brooks, and Robert Penn Warren. The Review is shown to be an important part of American intellectual history in the thirties and forties, of the Southern Renascence in literature, the history of LSU, and the careers of its editors and contributors. That the Review was more than a literary quarterly (thus the label "cultural quarterly") is evident in its contents. Besides fiction, poetry, and literary criticism, the magazine published Southern, political, and philosophical articles. …

An Externalities Approach To The Analysis Of Federal Grants-In-Aid Emphasizing The Effect Of Grants On Cooperation Among Local Units Of Government., Charles Franklin Hawkins
An Externalities Approach To The Analysis Of Federal Grants-In-Aid Emphasizing The Effect Of Grants On Cooperation Among Local Units Of Government., Charles Franklin Hawkins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The genesis of federal grants-in-aid can be traced back to the Northwest Ordinances of 1785 and 1787. From those earlier years to the present, grants have been introduced in response to individual needs that have existed at particular points in time. As a result of the basic reaction nature of grants, only a very negligible consideration has been given to developing the individual grants into an integrated, non-conflicting system. As could be expected, the consequence of this approach to grant development has been an uncoordinated grant program containing overlapping grants in some cases and conflicting ones in others. In fact, …
Effect Of Capillary Diameter On The Rate Of Radiation Induced Polymerization Of Acrylamide In Saline Solutions Containing Dissolved Phosphorus-32., Satyajit Verma
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Radiation induced solution polymerization of acrylamide was studied at 80(DEGREES)C in tubes with diameters of 6, 2.29, 0.89 and 0.38 mm. The tubes were filled with aqueous solutions of 3% acrylamide, 10% NaCl and sufficient neutralized orthophosphoric acid to produce a specific radioactivity of 1 mCi/ml. of dissolved ('32)P. Distinctly higher initial rates of increase of solution viscosity were observed with increasing tube diameter. Kinetic studies were done also with 3% acrylamide in 0, 5 and 10% salt solutions at 81.5(DEGREES)C and 28(DEGREES)C; the reaction induced by external irradiation from ('60)Co. Other systems studied were 1 and 1.5% acrylamide in …
Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups
Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas More has appeared in diverse works from the sixteenth to twentieth century; these works have usually treated him as a model of integrity and conscience whose love of truth made him a touchstone for judging a panoply of others. More's own century viewed him in conflicting ways. Tudor apologists--Hall, Holinshed, and Foxe--were critical of More's wit and treatment of heretics and deemed him prideful, whereas the recusants like Roper and Harpsfield pictured More loyal Londoner, devoted father, humanist, and man of conscience. Sixteenth century treatments culminate in those of Ro. Ba. and Munday. Munday's Thomas More, an essentially Protestant …
The Relationship Of Biorhythms To Academic Performance In Reading., Natalia Lavonne Brackin Peveto
The Relationship Of Biorhythms To Academic Performance In Reading., Natalia Lavonne Brackin Peveto
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was an investigation to determine if a relationship existed between the twenty-three day physical, twenty-eight day emotional and the thirty-three day intellectual biorhythm cycles and academic achievement in reading. If a relationship existed between the learning potential of a student and the low, critical and high levels of the biorhythm cycles, instructional techniques could be designed to capitalize on the internal fluctuations of each learner. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant relationship between the academic performance of a student in reading and the high, low and critical positions of the twenty-three day physical, twenty-eight day …

Transport Properties Of Antimony In A Rod And Corbino Geometries At Low Temperatures., Mahmood Baratikhajooie
Transport Properties Of Antimony In A Rod And Corbino Geometries At Low Temperatures., Mahmood Baratikhajooie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An investigation of the roles of carrier diffusion and carrier-phonon drag in the thermoelectric power, the Ettingshuasen and Nernst-Ettingshausen effects was carried out on single crystals of antimony at low temperatures. Previous investigations have shown that the ideal resistivity and the high field resistivity are characterized by strong mutual drag. Here the Ettingshausen and Nernst-Ettingshausen effects were characterized by a strong simple drag. In contrast to these two extreme cases the thermoelectric power exhibited a clear admixture of the two drag conditions. Interpretation of Ettingshausen and Nernst-Ettingshausen data indicates that these two measurements are less reliable for the determination of …

The Application Of Bel Canto Concepts And Principles To Trumpet Pedagogy And Performance., Malcolm Eugene Beauchamp
The Application Of Bel Canto Concepts And Principles To Trumpet Pedagogy And Performance., Malcolm Eugene Beauchamp
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bel canto is a term of nebulous meaning and inconsistent usage. Probably the most comprehensive interpretation of bel canto is an ideal of vocal excellence, a vocal technique, and a style of performance identified with the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Recent publications concerning vocal pedagogy and performance practices illustrate an efflorescence of interest in bel canto. The significance of bel canto to contemporary vocal pedagogy has become a topic for theses and dissertations. In view of the revived interest in bel canto and its significance to contemporary vocal pedagogy, it is apparent that the teachings of the old bel canto …
Agrarian Political Economy: The Order Of Ends And Means., Andrew Warnie Foshee
Agrarian Political Economy: The Order Of Ends And Means., Andrew Warnie Foshee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From the earliest economic thought there has existed the notion that agriculture is the most preferred of all forms of economic activity. This preference is grounded in the belief that when agriculture is the dominant form of economic activity a set of ends will be attained which are consistent with human nature and conducive to human happiness. These are the ends of limited wealth, internal and external freedom, and piety. Writers expressing this belief were engaged in a study of political economy which was not bounded by the methodological strictures of logical positivism. For these agrarian political economists there existed …
Characterization Of The Bacterium Associated With Ratoon Stunting Disease And The Effects Of The Disease On Water Relations Of Sugarcane., John Kao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Part I. Microcolonies of a filamentous, branched organism were observed by phase-contrast and interference-contrast microscopy in vascular extracts from internodes of sugarcane with ratoon stunting disease. The microcolonies were present in a matrix extracted from the xylem vessels of internodes by negative pressure. Matrices and microcolonies were not found in sugarcane known to be free of the disease. Electron microscopy revealed branched chains of cells with septa and mesosomes. The individual cells of the filaments were characteristic of the previously described coryneform bacterium associated with the disease. Vascular extracts from one- or two-node cuttings of diseased cane did not reveal …
Adult-Child Motor Performance Differences: A Developmental Perspective Of Control Processing Deficits., Jere Dee Gallagher
Adult-Child Motor Performance Differences: A Developmental Perspective Of Control Processing Deficits., Jere Dee Gallagher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
What the adult does during the intertrial interval that the child does not to process information was under investigation in this series of studies. Representative ages chosen due to a difference in the utilization of control processes were 5-, 7-, 11-, and 19-year olds. The initial study tested the initial availability of information to the subject prior to processing. The major question was detecting developmental differences in kinesthetic sensory store. Results indicated that the superior performance of the adults is not due to the initial availability of the information. The second study investigated the detriment to performance by increasing the …
