Leg Weakness: Interactions Of Avian Reoviruses And Nutrition In Disease And Immunological Responses., Mark Eric Cook
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The interaction of reovirus infection and manganese, biotin, niacin, choline, or folic acid fed to chickens at a dietary level of 20%, 100%, or 200% of the National Research Council Nutrient requirements of poultry-1977 (NRC-77) (Nat. Acad. Sci., Washington, D.C.) was evaluated in five studies. Responses measured were the incidence and severity of tenosynovitis, the incidence of nutrient deficiency lesions, bone shearing strength, and immunologic responses. The severity of tenosynovitis was greater in male chickens than female chickens fed varying dietary levels of manganese, biotin, choline, or folic acid. The incidence of tenosynovitis was higher in male chickens compared to …

Cardiovascular Responses In High, Moderate And Low Aerobic Capacity Males During Static And Dynamic Work., John Francis Harper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Eighteen male subjects participated in an investigation to examine the effects of static, dynamic, and combination work (static and dynamic) on the variables heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pressure rate product, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO(,2)(' )max). The subjects, who were all free from any cardiovascular problems, were divided into 3 groups based on their maximum oxygen consumption levels. The high (Group 1), moderate (Group 2), and low (Group 3) aerobic capacity groups had mean VO(,2)(' )max levels of 64, 55, and 47 ml(.)kg('-1)(.)min('-1), respectively. Each subject performed a static test (holding a weighted brief case), a dynamic …
Eigenvalues Of Nuclear Operators Of Diagonal Type., Raymond J. Kaiser
Eigenvalues Of Nuclear Operators Of Diagonal Type., Raymond J. Kaiser
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A nuclear operator T on a Banach space is an operator admitting a representation T = (SIGMA) T(,n) where each operator T(,n) has rank one and (SIGMA) (VERT.BAR)(VERT.BAR)(TAU)(,n)(VBAR)(VBAR) < (INFIN). A. Grothendieck proved that the sequence of eigenvalues, repeated according to their multiplicities, of such a nuclear operator must be square summable and that, in fact, two is the best possible exponent of summability. This work uses operators of diagonal type, i.e., operators which admit a diagonal representation with respect to a biorthogonal system, to construct examples of eigenvalue behavior. In particular we show that all of the known results concerning eigenvalue summability of nuclear operators can be obtained using operators of diagonal type. In Chapter 1, we present the terminology and notation to be used in this work. Chapter 2 gives a summary of results concerning nuclear (trace class) operators on Hilbert space. In Chapter 3, some of the important known results concerning eigenvalue behavior of nuclear operators on general Banach spaces are presented. The convolution operators on L(,p)(0,1), 1 < p < (INFIN), p (NOT=) 2, are diagonal operators since the trigonometric system (e('2(pi)inx)) is a conditional basis of these spaces. In Chapter 4 we use these important operators to exhibit extremal behavior of eigenvalue summability of nuclear operators on the L(,p)-spaces. In Chapter 5, we study nuclear cyclic diagonal operators. If X(,1),... ,X(,n) are sequence spaces, an operator D on (CRPLUS)X(,i) is a cyclic diagonal operator if its restriction to each X(,i) is a diagonal operator into X(,i+1) (if i = n into X(,1)). Certain eigenspaces of these operators have important applications to Banach space theory. Finally, in Chapter 6, we use a recently discovered space of G. Pisier to answer affirmatively a long outstanding question of. Pe l cynski and Saphar which is converse to Grothendieck's result: Given a (nonzero) sequence ((lamda)(,n)) in l(,2), is there a Banach space X and a nuclear operator on X whose eigenvalue sequence is ((lamda)(,n))?
Reducing Shoplifting Incidents Through The Use Of Signs., Jeffrey Allan Gottlieb
Reducing Shoplifting Incidents Through The Use Of Signs., Jeffrey Allan Gottlieb
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study consisted of three experiments designed to reduce the shoplifting rate of targeted merchandise in retail establishments without adversely affecting sales. In the first two experiments, attempts were made to replicate earlier findings suggesting that identifying frequently stolen merchandise would reduce its theft rate. In addition, signs were posted in locations where shoppers contemplated or carried out the act of shoplifting in order to achieve generalized reductions in shoplifting. Neither the signs identifying frequently stolen merchandise nor the signs identifying locations used by shoplifters had a consistent impact on any of the target merchandise. The third experiment was designed …

The primary purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Dalcroze Eurhythmics on the melodic musical growth of first grade students. The secondary purposes of the study were to determine the differences between boys and girls in the ability to discriminate pitch register and melodic contour and to determine the differences created by the interaction of method, sex, and time. Seventy-six first grade students in four intact classes participated in the study. Two classes, control group, used the melodic units of the 1978 Silver Burdett Music (SBM). Two classes, experimental group, used Silver Burdett Music and Dalcroze Eurhythmic …
A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier
A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to study the three-level hierarchy of information processing with respect to cognitive demand. The study addressed the problem of differences between the most commonly used levels of comprehension, literal, inferential, and critical. The main types of information processing models, bottom-up, top-down, and interactive-compensatory, all accept the premise that literal processing is less cognitively demanding than inferential processing, and that inferential processing is less cognitively demanding than critical processing. In order to test whether statistically significant differences actually existed in these three levels of comprehension, fifty students were chosen and individually tested. Twenty-five fifth graders, and twenty-five …

Development Of Louisiana Public School Guidance Services, 1942-1972., Alice Hunter Chilton
Development Of Louisiana Public School Guidance Services, 1942-1972., Alice Hunter Chilton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine how guidance services developed in the public schools of Louisiana between 1942 and 1972. In order to understand the events of these years, it was necessary to examine the period preceding them. In the beginning of the guidance movement, social workers pioneered in assisting youth with problems associated with industrialization. Louisiana was unique in that its guidance program started within the school system. An experimental program began in the Orleans Parish Schools in 1921. It was considered effective and continued. In the 1920s vocational guidance was offered for the first time at …

Periodization: A Hypothetical Training Model For Strength And Power., Harold Stephen O'Bryant
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purposes of this investigation were to: (a) examine strength and anaerobic power gains as well as selected local muscle endurance, maximum work output, and body composition adaptations resulting from short term training with traditional methods versus a theoretical model; (b) to provide a synergistic overview from a specifically constructed series of studies, each designed in a logical progression; and (c) to pool holdings of like data to generate a scaling procedure used to predict high and low gainers of power from initial measures. Seven training studies utilized a total of 298 male and 45 female subjects divided into experimental …
Microbial Products From Sweet Potato Wastes., Nhuan Phu Nghiem
Microbial Products From Sweet Potato Wastes., Nhuan Phu Nghiem
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Microbial production of methane from alkaline sweet potato wastes was studied. Assessment of methane production potential was based on total COD of the wastes. A single-stage and a two-stage system were studied. In both systems, to ensure stable operation and high performance, methane fermenters had to be initially seeded with large quantities of methane formers. A 50% inoculum (based on total fermenter volume) was found to be most effective. Methane formers tended to aggregate to form spherical particles which had extremely high settling rates, this eliminated the requirement of cell recycle. They obtained the nutrients required for their growth through …
On The Locus Of Contextual Interference In Motor Skill Acquisition., Timothy Donald Lee
On The Locus Of Contextual Interference In Motor Skill Acquisition., Timothy Donald Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three experiments are reported which investigate the role of contextual variety effects in motor skill acquisition. In Experiment 1, results revealed that despite previous methodological confoundings of contextual variety with response paradigm manipulations the critical retention advantage of random over blocked practice schedules was maintained. In Experiment 2 the inclusion of a group which combined attributes from random and blocked practice schedules produced evidence which implicated the role of event repetitions as the experimental variable from which contextual variety effects arise. By changing the task goals in Experiment 3 to emphasize the processing of error information as the cognitive activity …
Standardization Of The Dreger Dyadic Family Interacting Scale., Somsri Reem Kongprasirtpong Khalid
Standardization Of The Dreger Dyadic Family Interacting Scale., Somsri Reem Kongprasirtpong Khalid
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Triads consisting of father, mother, and an offspring from 122 intact families responded to the Dreger Dyadic Family Interaction Scale (DDFIS) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. The sample was made up of mostly white, middle-class, non-clinic families. Two offspring age-groups were included, 12-14 and 18-21. Factor analysis on the DDFIS yielded ten factors. Analyses of variance comparing subgroups within the samples indicated many findings consistent with existing literature or in the expected direction. There were also unexpected findings. Another two independent groups of college students were asked to rate the wholesomeness and the social desirability of the DDFIS items. …
Religion And Racial Change: A Comparative Study Of Clergy Attitudes Over Time., John Jules Nelson
Religion And Racial Change: A Comparative Study Of Clergy Attitudes Over Time., John Jules Nelson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed as an empirical investigation into attitudes of racial prejudice amongst Mississippi Methodist clergymen. Based on Durkheim's theories of the importance of surrounding cultural factors upon religious life, causal relationships for this target group were sought within the context of both regional (southern) and national cultural norms. Basic hypotheses were that clergy prejudice would vary directly with age, fundamentalism, and perception of prejudice of parishioners and community; and inversely with education, urban location of ministry, social actionist stance and agreement with denominational policy. It was also predicted that the mean prejudice score would decrease over the time …
Socio-Cultural And Attitudinal Change In The Modernization Process: A Study Of Acehnese Society In Transition (Sumatra)., Bahrein Tuhumalem Sugihen
Socio-Cultural And Attitudinal Change In The Modernization Process: A Study Of Acehnese Society In Transition (Sumatra)., Bahrein Tuhumalem Sugihen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It was assumed that the introduction of large scale industry into a traditional agrarian society would bring about some changes in the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of individual members of the social system. Such changes are related to one's place of residence as well as personal characteristics. It was hypothesized that (1) one's religious-behavior and one's attitudes toward some consequences of industrialization (modernism) are related to one's place of residence, age, educational attainment, and one's degree of contact with industry; (2) one's degree of contact with the industry is related to or effected by one's place of residence, age, …
Toward A Classification Of General Systems Theory Concepts: The Categorization Of Vocabulary Components And Their Usage Patterns In The Literature., Stephanie S. Robbins
Toward A Classification Of General Systems Theory Concepts: The Categorization Of Vocabulary Components And Their Usage Patterns In The Literature., Stephanie S. Robbins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The achievement of the goals of General Systems Theory are, in part, dependent on the development and use of a language which will facilitate relevant communication across disciplines so that structural similarities which are hidden by the use of specialists' languages can be examined. This study explores various dimensions of the language associated with GST. The major vocabulary components associated with GST were identified using four criterion. The first was designed to enumerate terms that reflected the dimensional aspects of systems terminology needed to identify systems characteristics which are isomorphic across different disciplines. The second criterion eliminated discipline-bound terms with …
The Mechanism Of Sperm Incorporation And An Analysis Of Microvilli And Microfilament Organization In Sea Urchin Eggs Examined Through The Use Of Cytochalasin B And Ammonium Chloride., Beverly Dixon Wade
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sperm incorporation in Lytechinus pictus and Strongylocentrotus purpuratus eggs incubated (10 min) and fertilized in the presence of 2 x 10('-6) M cytochalasin B (CB) and 1 and 10 mM ammonium chloride (NH(,4)Cl) occurs in the presence of limited microvilli and microfilament organization and cortical exocytosis. CB inhibition on sperm incorporation is time related and continues to occur long after sperm-egg fusion. In S. purpuratus, at least 30% incorporation is observed in all CB treated eggs. Sperm do not incorporate until 2.5 min after insemination. Maximum incorporation occurs between 7 to 10 min. Percent incorporation approached 60% when eggs were …
Interactions Of Rotylenchulus Reniformis And Meloidogyne Incognita On Sweet Potato., Ronald James Thomas
Interactions Of Rotylenchulus Reniformis And Meloidogyne Incognita On Sweet Potato., Ronald James Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) and Rotylenchulus reniformis (Rr) interactions on sweet potato were studied in the greenhouse and in naturally and artificially infested field plots for 3 years. In a naturally infested field, negative correlations were found between early Mi and subsequent Rr, and early Rr and subsequent Mi counts. In field plots with a high natural population of Rr (2700/250 cm('3) soil 8 April), artificial infestation with high levels of Mi (4000/250 cm('3) in upper 30 cm) in both fumigated and nonfumigated treatments inhibited Rr, while the final Mi population was not affected. In various greenhouse tests, using inoculum levels …

The entire extant repertoire of unpublished music for the lyra viol in consort with other instruments exists in eight manuscripts which provide the focus for this investigation of mid-seventeenth-century English music. This repertoire, which dates from the late 1630s until the early 1660s, is written for an ensemble which includes a treble instrument, a lyra viol, bass viol, and either a theorbo or harpsichord. Historical background for this period, found in Chapter I, provides a context for the study of the music. The transition in musical style during this period reflects the changes in the political, economic, and social structure. …
On Valuation Rings As Homomorphic Images Of Valuation Domains., J. Paul Vicknair
On Valuation Rings As Homomorphic Images Of Valuation Domains., J. Paul Vicknair
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A number of years ago, I. Kaplansky raised informally the question of whether every valuation ring could be expressed as a homomorphic image of a valuation domain. By a valuation ring, we mean a commutative ring with identity whose ideals are linearly ordered by inclusion. The classical notion of a valuation ring included the assumption that the ring is a domain. For two cases an affirmative answer to Kaplansky's question is known: for 0-dimensional valuation rings; and, for valuation rings which are monoid rings. In the early 40's, Kaplansky obtained structure theorems for a large class of (maximally complete) valuation …
Year By Year Comparisons Of Factor Scores On The Children's Behavioral Classification Project Instrument., Kim Elizabeth Vangeffen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A considerable body of research has been developed in the area of children's problems and their classification. Nevertheless, none of the systems which have been studied have gained widespread acceptance. One of the biggest problems with previous research in this area has been the lack of data tying problem dimensions to age or developmental level. The purpose of the present research was the examination of year by year differences in 25 dimensions of children's behavior. Subjects consisted of 281 school children between the ages of 5 and 14. The Children's Behavioral Classification Project Instrument was administered to the parent or …

Ultrastructural - Biochemical Changes And Sensory Correlations In Shrimp During Cold Storage., Teck Muk Wong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ultrastructural-biochemical changes and sensory correlations of penaeid shrimp during iced and frozen storage were analyzed. The aroma, color and acceptability of "wild" shrimp, P. setiferus from the Gulf of Mexico, were judged by six trained panelist to be superior to that of the pond-raised shrimp, P. stylirostris. However, P. stylirostris on the Master Mix Shrimp Diet has a slightly superior flavor than those fed with the Marine Ration 20 diet. Free amino acids, proline, glycine, taurine, and glutamic acid declined during the first 10 days of ice storage, and increased after 20 days. Leucine, and lysine increased linearly during ice …

An investigation of organic-walled microplankton from the only known outcrops of Lower Tertiary marine sediments on the Antarctic continent has been completed. Seventy samples collected from seven stratigraphic sections through the Paleogene Seymour Island deltaic complex were examined. Forty-four dinocyst genera and 75 species were recovered, of which 2 genera and 10 species were new. Specimens attributable to the Acritarcha, Pterospermatales, and Chlorococcales also were noted. Dinocyst analysis indicated the sediments of the Cross Valley Formation, in the Cape Wiman area, were laid down during the early late Paleocene Epoch. The deposits at the type section in Cross Valley are …
Evaluation Of A Polymer Film Impregnated With Reagent For The Detection And Determination Of Chlorine In Air., Khudre Muhammad Attar
Evaluation Of A Polymer Film Impregnated With Reagent For The Detection And Determination Of Chlorine In Air., Khudre Muhammad Attar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new method for the direct detection and determination of chlorine in air has been devised. The method is based on the permeation of the gas through a silicone-polycarbonate copolymer film impregnated with a colorimetric reagent. The impregnation of the film with reagent was achieved by dissolving both a polymer film and a reagent in a common volatile solvent (CHCl(,3)), followed by casting on a leveled surface to allow the solvent to evaporate, thus forming a polymer film containing suspended reagent. The polymer films impregnated in such manner, were uniform and transparent. A spectrophotometer was used for monitoring the change …
Recovery Of Sugars From Blackstrap Molasses By Ion Exclusion., Edgar L. Aguirre G.
Recovery Of Sugars From Blackstrap Molasses By Ion Exclusion., Edgar L. Aguirre G.
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ion exclusion is a chromatographic separation of ionic from non-ionic material on a bed of ion exchange resins. This process has been proposed for the recovery of sucrose from molasses. However, separation of sucrose from the non-sugar and reducing sugar fractions is difficult. On the contrary, separation of reducing sugars from non-sugars is relatively easy. Inverting the sucrose to reducing sugars for further separation by ion exclusion gives a way to recover essentially all the sugars from molasses. Also, it eliminates the need for crystallization, since the reducing sugars can be sold in solution. The total sugar content in blackstrap …

The treatment was administered to four experimental groups …
Two-Dimensional Electron Layers In External Fields: Analysis Of The Effects Of Non-Separability., Samir Kumar Bhattacharya
Two-Dimensional Electron Layers In External Fields: Analysis Of The Effects Of Non-Separability., Samir Kumar Bhattacharya
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two-dimensional electron layers when placed in external electric and magnetic fields can display interesting features which arise solely due to the non-separability of electronic motions. Through simple, single electron Hamiltonians, we have studied in considerable details the effects of the nonseparability on the eigenvalue structure of two distinct systems. Intersubband cyclotron combined resonances in a quasi-two-dimensional space charge layer as found in metal-oxide-semiconductor sandwiches are studied using "triangular well" approximation. Two alternative basis sets have been pointed out which enable one to obtain analytical matrix elements of the Hamiltonian for all values of the magnitude and the angle of tilt …
Solubility Studies In Pure And Mixed Solvents (Pyridine, Thiophene, Benzene, Cyclohexane)., Peter Byonghyock Choi
Solubility Studies In Pure And Mixed Solvents (Pyridine, Thiophene, Benzene, Cyclohexane)., Peter Byonghyock Choi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research presented in this dissertation consists of two parts; part 1 for solubility of aromatic hydrocarbon solids in pure and mixed solvents and part 2 for solubility of pure gases in water at high pressures. In the research of part 1, eight aromatic hydrocarbon solids biphenyl, naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, acenaphthene, fluoranthene, pyrene and o-terphenyl are employed to measure their solubilities in pure solvents pyridine and thiophene and in mixed solvents of benzene and cyclohexane at three different concentrations. Solubilities of phenanthrene, which undergoes a lambda point transition, are predicted by a new solubility equation derived in this research. The …
Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen
Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The peripheral electrophysiological manifestations of levels of cognitive processing and memory performance were investigated by recording heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature and electromyogram measures during a three phase verbal task. Subjects processed words at three cognitive levels (phonetic, low semantic, high semantic), and physiological recordings were made during cue covert processing and verbalization phases. Three colored lights were used to cue subjects to the appropriate processing level for each word. An incidental memory task was given following the processing tasks. As expected, words processed at the higher cognitive levels were recalled better. There was greater physiological reactivity associated with …
Environment, Strategy And Performance: An Empirical Analysis In Two Service Industries., William Randolph Bigler Jr
Environment, Strategy And Performance: An Empirical Analysis In Two Service Industries., William Randolph Bigler Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research attempts to conceptually integrate and empirically test certain constructs and relationships that emanate from the literature in Environment, Strategy and Performance. The literature in these three areas suggests that certain configurations of Environment and Strategy ought to lead to high performance, while other configurations of these constructs ought to be associated with low performance. The hypotheses in the study build inductively and are based on a key tenet in cybernetics: that external environmental dynamism and diversity should be matched by internal firm dynamism and diversity. The sample for this research was selected Banks and Savings and Loans in …
