Toxicity Of Ambush Registered Trademark And Pydrin Registered Trademark To Red Crawfish, Procambarus Clarkii (Girard) And Channel Catfish, Ictaluras Punctatus Rafinesque In Laboratory And Field Studies And The Accumulation And Dissipation Of Associated Residues., Dwayne Paul Coulon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In laboratory studies, 24 hr LC(,50) values obtained for Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)) on 18-27 mm juvenile red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard), in clear water were 0.49 and 0.37 ppb, respectively. LC(,50) values derived for 10-20 mm channel catfish fry, Ictaluras punctatus Rafinesque, were 1.81 and 1.83 ppb, respectively for Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)). The addition of alluvial soils to test waters had no apparent effect on toxicity to crawfish but did reduce toxicity to channel catfish. This was attributed to a strong adsorption to clay and organic components of the soils. Applications of field rates of Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)) to …
The Theatrical Career Of John E. Owens (1823-1886)., Thomas Arthur Bogar
The Theatrical Career Of John E. Owens (1823-1886)., Thomas Arthur Bogar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study traces the theatrical career of John E. Owens (1823-1886), a career which reflects many of the changes which transformed nineteenth century American theatre. One of the most popular and financially successful comic actors in America in mid-century, Owens was also an innovative and successful manager who anticipated realistic trends in staging and acting. Best known for the role of Solon Shingle in J. S. Jones' The People's Lawyer (later re-titled Solon Shingle), which he played over 2000 times, Owens refined the Yankee Character established by Hill, Marble and Silsbee and won critical and popular acclaim for both his …

Self-Talk And Exposure In The Reduction Of Avoidance In Aquaphobic Children., Johanna Wolfson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Efficacy of verbal self-regulation and in vivo exposure, as compared to placebo treatments, was tested in reduction of water avoidance in aquaphobic children. Forty-seven aquaphobic subjects were assigned to one of five conditions: (1) Self-talk with imaginal exposure (ST); (2) Self-talk with in vivo exposure (ST/E); (3) Attention Control with imaginal exposure (AC); (4) Attention Control with in vivo exposure (AC/E); (5) No Treatment Control (NTC). Children in the ST/E and AC/E groups demonstrated the greatest gains in reduction of avoidance, while those in the ST and ST/E groups showed greater gains in swim proficiency. As compared to the NTC, …
Breast-Feeding Survey In Louisiana, 1982: Physicians' Recommendations And Hospital Practices., Elizabeth Ann Snider Reames
Breast-Feeding Survey In Louisiana, 1982: Physicians' Recommendations And Hospital Practices., Elizabeth Ann Snider Reames
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Medical recommendations and hospital practices have been reported to play major roles in determining how a woman chooses to feed her infant. Studies have shown that physicians often do not provide encouragement to women to breast-feed or information to manage breast-feeding successfully. Hospitals have been shown to have routines which are not conducive to lactation. A mail questionnaire was sent to randomly selected Louisiana family practitioners, general practitioners, obstetricians and pediatricians to determine their breast-feeding recommendations. A different questionnaire was mailed to Louisiana hospitals providing maternity services to determine the breast-feeding practices in these hospitals. Although most Louisiana physicians considered …

Teacher Attitudes Toward Computer Literacy., Leroy George Stenzel Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A survey on attitudes and perceptions toward computer technology was conducted among 464 teachers in five randomly chosen parishes in the State of Louisiana. In each parish one elementary school, one junior high or middle school, and one high school were randomly chosen. The sample included every teacher in each of the chosen schools. A total of 369 (79.5 percent) surveys were returned. The purposes of the study were to delineate, analyze, and document the reasons that teachers may avoid using computer technology. Lack of opportunity, lack of assistance, and lack of equipment and materials appeared to be the primary …

Blood Lactate Removal During Varying Intensities Of Active Recovery Following Supramaximal Work., Stephen Lollar Dodd
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of varying intensities of recovery exercise on the level of blood lactate after a short, supramaximal exercise bout. Seven males were advised of the testing protocol and consented to serve as subjects. All subjects performed an oxygen cost of cycling test and maximal oxygen uptake (VO(,2)(' )max) test prior to the commencement of the recovery tests. The subjects then performed one of four treatments on separate days with 1-4 days of rest between tests. Preceding each treatment the subjects cycled at a workload corresponding to 150% of VO(,2)(' )max for …
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pressed alfalfa juice at pH 8.5 was heated (60(DEGREES)C) and centrifuged to produce a brown solution. This solution was further heated (80(DEGREES)C) at pH 4.0, centrifuged, and freeze-dried to produce a light tan powder. Tetrahymena pyriformis W. was used to test quality of cytoplasmic and chloroplastic fractions of alfalfa leaf protein concentrate (ALPC). Chloroplastic ALPC supported poor cell growth, probably because of high concentrations of chlorophyll, fat, and chlorogenic acid to which Tetrahymena is reported to be sensitive. Data indicated that isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine and sulfur-containing amino acids in cytoplasmic ALPC were higher than those in soybean. Data indicated cytoplasmic …
Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad
Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to identify the variables or types of variables that are possible predictors of organizational participation. Three categories of independent variables--ecological, situational, and individualistic variables are investigated. The sample consists of 442 rural community influentials from twelve counties in six southern states. Both the Spearman's test of correlation as well as multiple regression analysis are employed to assess the relationships among the independent and dependent variables. The zero-order correlations show that ecological variables (population size, percent white, and urbanization) and situational variables (organization availability and organization diversity) are generally highly correlated with organizational participation (p < 0.001). On the other hand, individualistic variables (occupation, education, age, and length of residence) are generally not significantly related to organizational participation, particularly in membership in influential organizations. The multiple regression analysis reveals that the three categories of variables account for about 20 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, and about 15 percent of the variance in the general measures of participation (simple memberships in any set of organizations, attendance at meetings and holding offices). Situational variables are found to have the most influence on membership in influential organizations, whereas population size (an ecological variable) is found to have the most influence on participation as indicated by the general measures of participation. Situational variables account for about 13.5 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, although the percentage of explained variance in the general measures of participation is less than 2 percent. Ecological variables, on the other hand, account for about 9 percent of the variance in organizational participation. One of the important tasks of the study is to examine whether organizational participation is related to community influence. Although there is some evidence that participation is associated with influence, the amount of variance explained by organizational participation is rather weak (less than 9 percent). Overall, the study suggests that structural variables (ecological and situational variables) are more important predictors of participation than individualistic variables. Hence, any explanation of the phenomenon of participation will be incomplete if structural factors are ignored.

Inheritance Of Resistance To Soil Rot, Streptomyces Ipomoea And Other Characters In The Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas, L., Roberto Soenarjo Dwidjosewoyo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Genetic study on sweet potato resistance to the soil rot disease, Streptomyces ipomoea and other characters was conducted from 1979 through 1981. In control crosses, L(,3)-64 was incompatible with L(,4)-62 and L(,4)-112 with L(,4)-131. The average pod set for all progenies was 16.95%. Additive genetic effects were more important than non-additive in the inheritance of resistance. Resistant families were only produced from crosses between resistant parents and most progenies from crosses of moderatley resistant x resistant, resistant x susceptible and moderately resistant x susceptible parents produced moderately resistant segregates. Polycross progenies from resistant parents, L(,4)-131 and L(,6)-135, had families with …
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Because of increasing concern over global pollution by the energy production industry, especially large, centralized utility complexes, the quantitation and speciation of heavy metals have taken on great importance. These metals are emitted with coal fly ash and may be subsequently deposited in natural waters. Complications arise when certain inorganic compounds undergo biomethylation by microbial action in these waters. Therefore, procedures must be developed to analyze and differentiate the mixture of inorganic and organometallic compounds present. This work is a study of the electrochemical properties of inorganic and organothallium compounds. The toxicological significance of thallium compounds is known, and their …

An Experimental Evaluation Of The Performance Of Lot Size Strategies In A Mrp System Facing Uncertain Demand Environment With Different Operating Conditions., Mohammad E. Raiszadeh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Most manufacturing organizations may be viewed as multi-stage production-inventory systems in which production of goods proceeds from the acquisition of raw material to the fabrication of final product through a series of production stages. Material requirements planning (MRP) has been introduced as an inventory planning technique for such systems. Different lot sizing models have been used to improve the economic efficiency of MRP systems. The objective of this research was to examine the impact of lot size strategies, degree of demand variability, and degree of component commonality on the performance of MRP systems in a stochastic demand environment. A computer …

The Yongnam-Ro: An Historical Geography Of A Korean Royal Road. (Volumes I And Ii)., Young-Joon Choe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Yongnam-ro, the main communication artery between Seoul and Pusan, was the shortest and the most important route running through the central part of southern Korea. This road evolved as a military campaign route in ancient times and finally as an administrative communication artery in the Yi Dynasty. Although spanning some rugged areas in its course, the Yongnam-ro had some advantages: first, it avoided the troublesome communication system connected by river crossings because its path followed longitudinal valleys of the Han and Naktong rivers; second, it connected the waterways of the Han and Naktong; third, it formed the pivot belt …
An Investigation Of National Control Of Multinationals In Nigeria., Sylvanus Sunny Ogburia
An Investigation Of National Control Of Multinationals In Nigeria., Sylvanus Sunny Ogburia
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
For many years, the multinational corporations (MNCs) have been looked upon as agents of development, especially in terms of resource transferred from developed countries (DCs) to less developed countries (LDCs). However, a group of protectionists have maintained that the presence of an MNC in LDCs is a "cause" of the problem instead of a "blessing" to these nations. They have asserted that MNCs exercise a total dominance over a peripheral nation and can or have dwarfed economic growth. The only way to avoid this "doom" is to introduce some regulatory schemes which will help to control the behavior and the …

Smoking In The Soviet Union, R. Cooper
Smoking In The Soviet Union, R. Cooper
Faculty Publications
Although it is the fourth largest producer of tobacco in the world, relatively little has been written about the problem in the USSR. Since the economy is centrally planned and marketing of tobacco products is under direct government control it might be expected that the Soviet Union would implement different, perhaps, more effective, antismoking campaigns. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

Recent Trends In Coronary Risk Factors In The Ussr, R. Cooper, A. Schatzkin
Faculty Publications
The Soviet Union has experienced an increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease over the last 15 years sufficient to result in an overall deterioration in the health of adults. The distribution of coronary risk factors, and the secular trends in diet and cigarette consumption provide a potential explanation for the upsurge in death rates. The animal fat content of the Soviet diet has been steadily enriched since the 1950s and cigarette production increased 72 per cent from 1959 to 1980. The post-Stalin orientation of the Soviet economy toward a policy of motivating the work force primarily through the …

On Fourier Transform Of Generalized Brownian Functionals, Hui Hsiung Kuo
On Fourier Transform Of Generalized Brownian Functionals, Hui Hsiung Kuo
Faculty Publications
Let (L2) B ̇- and (L2) b ̇- be the spaces of generalized Brownian functionals of the white noises Ḃ and ḃ, respectively. A Fourier transform from (L2) B ̇- into (L2) b ̇- is defined by φ{symbol}̂(ḃ) = ∫S*: exp[-i ∫Rḃ(t) Ḃ(t) dt]: b ̇φ{symbol}( B ̇) dμ( B ̇), where : : b ̇ denotes the renormalization with respect to ḃ and μ is the standard Gaussian measure on the space S* of tempered distributions. It is proved that the Fourier transform carries Ḃ(t)-differentiation into multiplication by iḃ(t). The integral representation and the action ofφ{symbol}̂ as a generalized …

Let S be the Schwartz space of rapidly decreasing real functions. The dual space S* consists of the tempered distributions and the relation S ⊂ L2(R) ⊂ S* holds. Let γ be the Gaussian white noise on S* with the characteristic functional γ(ξ) = exp{-∥ξ∥2/2}, ξ ∈ S, where ∥·∥ is the L2(R)-norm. Let ν be the Poisson white noise on S* with the characteristic functional ν(ξ) = expΥ{hooked}R∫R {[exp(iξ(t)u)] - 1 - (1 + u2)-1(iξ(t)u)} dη(u)dt), ξ ∈ S, where the Lévy measure is assumed to satisfy the condition ∫Ru2dη(u) < ∞. It is proved that γ*ν has the same dichotomy property for shifts as the Gaussian white noise, i.e., for any ω ∈ S*, the shift (γ*ν)ω of γ*ν by ω and γ*ν are either equivalent or orthogonal. They are equivalent if and only if when ω ∈ L2(R) and the Radon-Nikodym derivative is derived. It is also proved that for the Poisson white noice νω is orthogonal to ν for any non-zero ω in S*. © 1982.

From an integer-valued function f we obtain, in a natural way, a matroid Mf on the domain of f. We show that the class of matroids so obtained is closed under restriction, contraction, duality, truncation and elongation, but not under direct sum. We give an excluded-minor characterization of and show that consists precisely of those transversal matroids with a presentation in which the sets in the presentation are nested. Finally, we show that on an n-set there are exactly 2”. © 1982, Australian Mathematical Society. All rights reserved.

Asymptotic Properties Of Random Subsets Of Projective Spaces, Douglas G. Kelly, James G. Oxley

A random graph on n vertices is a random subgraph of the complete graph on n vertices. By analogy with this, the present paper studies the asymptotic properties of a random submatroid ωr of the projective geometry PG(r— 1, q). The main result concerns Kr, the rank of the largest projective geometry occurring as a submatroid of ωr. We show that with probability one, for sufficiently large r, Krtakes one of at most two values depending on r. This theorem is analogous to a result of Bollobás and Erdös on the clique number of a random graph. However, whereas from …

Dirac and Halin have shown for n = 2 and n = 3 respectively that a minimally n-connected graph G has at least ((n-1)|V(G)|-2n)/(2n-1) vertices of degree n. Distributional Boundary Values Of Harmonic And Analytic Functions, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Distributional Boundary Values Of Harmonic And Analytic Functions, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
A theory for distributional boundary values of harmonic and analytic functions is presented. In this analysis there arise several indicators that measure the growth of these functions near the boundaries. An extension of the Phragmén-Lindelöf maximum principle is derived. Furthermore, the algebraic properties of the space of real periodic distributions are studied. By introducing a new product, the harmonic product, the boundary conditions involving harmonic functions are transformed into ordinary differential equations. © 1982.

It is shown that, in abelian l-groups, each morphism to a complete vector lattice extends over any majorizing embedding. This extends a result of the first author for Archimedean f-algebras with identity, and the recent Luxemburg-Schep theorem for vector lattices, and solves a problem of Conrad and McAlister. The proof presented here differs substantially from the Luxem- burg-Schep proof. Ours uses the Yosida representation and Gleason’s theorem on topological projectivity—this is novel, and seems relatively economical and transparent. The l-group theorem is shown to imply, and with some modestly categorical machinery, to be implied by, certain similar statements in subcategories …

Effects Of Insecticide-Herbicide Interactions On Soybean Plants Grown On Eight Louisiana Soils., Henry Clifford Hill Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1979, a study was initiated to determine if selected rates of aldicarb(2-methyl-2(methylthio)propionaldehyde O-(methylcarbamoyl oxime), trifluralin (a,a,a-Trifluoro-2, 6-dinitro-N, N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) and metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1, 2, 4-triazin-5(4H)-one), applied alone and in combination, resulted in phytotoxic reactions in soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merr. var. Davis. The three greenhouse studies and one field-greenhouse study were conducted on eight selected Louisiana soils to determine to what extent the soil characteristics affected the biological activity of these combinations. The trifluralin-containing treatments used in this study, generally, produced stunted, thick-stemmed plants with smaller and fewer nodules than the non-treated check plants. However, N(,2) C(,2) H(,2) activity was …
