From Boom To Bust: Post Gold Rush Patterns Of Adjustment In A California Mining Region. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lary Michael Dilsaver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mining in Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, and Amador counties in California began with the discovery of gold at Coloma in 1848. Thousands of people flocked to the region, built towns, roads, and an economy dependent on placer gold mining. Declining placer resources, coupled with strikes outside California, signalled the end of the boom period in the region. A long adjustment in the man-land system culminated with the end of mining as a significant economic function during World War I. Three major processes operated to alter the region from one with a mono-functional economy, a mobile population, and spatial homogeneity to …

Less time was needed for coloration and anthesis at the warm regime. Varietal responses varied with temperature with the cultivars 'Annette Hegg Diva', 'Gutbier V-10', 'Annette Hegg Dark Red' and 'Annette Hegg Supreme' achieving best quality in the cool regime. Lower …
The Coupling Of Monte Carlo Integration With The Boundary Integral Equation Technique To Solve Poisson Type Equations., Gary Steven Gipson
The Coupling Of Monte Carlo Integration With The Boundary Integral Equation Technique To Solve Poisson Type Equations., Gary Steven Gipson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary topic of this work is a method for dealing with boundary element formulations of nonhomogeneous terms in Poisson type equations. A concise presentation of boundary integral techniques and the corresponding fundamental solutions plays an important role in this development. Using Monte Carlo quadrature theory, an algorithm for the construction of a two-dimensional BEM Poisson equation analyzer is derived. A FORTRAN program based upon this algorithm is presented as a novel device that solves the general Poisson equation in two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries without domain discretization. In the axisymmetric case, Monte Carlo integration is also used to effectively compute …
An Experimental Rotavirus Infection In Neonatal Gnotobiotic Dogs., Charles Audrey Johnson
An Experimental Rotavirus Infection In Neonatal Gnotobiotic Dogs., Charles Audrey Johnson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A canine rotavirus isolate caused clinical disease, small intestinal lesions, serum antibody response, and shedding of rotavirus in the feces in newborn gnotobiotic dogs. The results of this study demonstrated this rotavirus was a pathogen in neonatal gnotobiotic dogs. The pathogenesis of the intestinal lesions was similar to the pathogenesis of rotaviral enteritis in other species. In three consecutive experiments, twenty puppies were derived by caesarean section and transferred to sterile isolators. Gnotobiotic puppies were inoculated orally with a rotavirus isolated from a neonatal puppy with fatal diarrhea. Fecal samples from the puppies were examined for virus particles by negative …

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley
Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas Bernhard's work remains controversial after more than twenty years of critical acclaim. Attempts to interpret his work according to traditional literary standards have generated as many questions as answers. Anneliese Botond believes Bernhard's work cannot be understood only through literary analysis, and Gudrun Mauch proposes that Jungian archetypes are present in his autobiographical novels. Critics agree, however, that Bernhard portrays mad protagonists in a seemingly insane world. The present study analyzes schizophrenia, myth, and the creative process in Bernhard's work to propose purpose for his descriptions of madness. This study also addresses questions posed by J. de Cort, who …

This dissertation results from an investigation into the instability of free jets of a Newtonian liquid (water) in air which are produced from long nozzles and have initially parabolic velocity profiles. This work includes an experimental investigation into both the jet length and the drop formation of such jets. This work also includes a numerical solution of the momentum equations in cylindrical coordinates. From the experimental work, a modification to existing theoretical equations has been made to account for the existance of local maxima in the length of laminar jets as their velocity is increased. An addition to the modification …
A Natural L(,P)-Metric For Spaces Composed Of Probability Measures With P-Th Moment., Mark William Scott
A Natural L(,P)-Metric For Spaces Composed Of Probability Measures With P-Th Moment., Mark William Scott
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the dissertation, it is seen that every probability measure with p-th moment on a complete, separable metric space can be viewed as a distribution of a metric space valued random variable. Between such random variables there exists an L(,p)-distance, and by finding the infimum of the L(,p)-distances between two types of random variables, it is possible to define a distance between distributions. It is seen that this distance can serve as a complete metric on the space of probability measures with p-th moment. The topology produced is shown to be equivalent to the topology of weak convergence of measures …

Studies On Several Biologically Active Peptides And Synthetic Random Copolypeptides., Randall Murdock Robinson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The work presented here is based on the Zimm-Bragg model for the helix-coil transition in polypeptides. Biologically active peptides discussed include: (beta)-endorphin, (beta)-lipotropin, glucagon, secretin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, and the binding or B subunit of cholera toxin. Random copolypeptides studied include copolymers of (omega)-hydroxyethyl and (omega)-hydroxybutyl-L-glutaminyl residues, and ionic copolypeptides containing L-glutamyl and either L-alanyl or L-tyrosyl residues. Residues 17-29 of (beta)-endorphin are expected from calculation to be alpha helical in the presence of anionic lipids. This portion of the chain forms an amphipathic helix which would be expected to interact favorably with a membrane containing anionic lipids. The order …
Experimental Study Of The Fluid Drag On A Torus At Low Reynolds Number., Dharmaratne Amarakoon
Experimental Study Of The Fluid Drag On A Torus At Low Reynolds Number., Dharmaratne Amarakoon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Measurements are presented for the drag on a torus moving along its axis of rotational symmetry at low Reynolds number. If D is the outside diameter of the torus, and d is the thickness in the axial direction, then the measurements cover the range s(,o) = 1 (the closed torus) to s(,o) = 135, where s(,o) (TBOND) (D/d) - 1. The effect of a coaxial cylindrical boundary (diameter H) is taken into account by an empirical correlation. The values of drag obtained by extrapolating to a fluid of infinite extent are in good agreement with the exact solution obtained by …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effect of variable solid properties on the kinetics of the reaction of spherical calcium oxide pellets with nitrogen dioxide (in the presence of excess oxygen) was studied. Experimental kinetic data was collected on a thermogravimetric analyzer, which measured weight change in a single pellet during reaction as a function of time. Reactions were carried out at temperatures of 150(DEGREES) to 550(DEGREES)C for gas streams containing 0.5 to 1.8 mole percent nitrogen dioxide and 8.7 mole percent oxygen. No reaction occurred at 600(DEGREES)C. At 150(DEGREES) and 250(DEGREES)C the conversion was found to proceed at a slow but steady rate with …
The Usefulness And Predictability Of Net Realizable Values: An Empirical Study., Jerry Joseph Baudin
The Usefulness And Predictability Of Net Realizable Values: An Empirical Study., Jerry Joseph Baudin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The general objective of financial reporting is to provide useful information for making economic decisions. Net realizable value has been recommended and advocated as a valuation method that would improve the usefulness of reported fnancial information. One shortcoming of the net realizable value method is that there are no established used market prices for certain fixed assets, such as buildings. At present, there is no evidence indicating that a solution to this shortcoming has been found. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically test the reliability of using specific price indexes in predicting net realizable values for certain …

This study provides an economic profile of small vegetable producers in Northeast Louisiana, develops enterprise budgets for selected vegetable crops, analyzes several resource situations and determines, via a linear programming model, the optimal resource allocation to different enterprise combinations for tiller and tractor technology. Labor available in specific time periods was found to be the most restrictive resource in all situations for both technologies. However, the proportion of annual available labor used was not higher than 30 percent in any case. As more land for vegetable production was made available to tiller technology farmers, net returns increased considerably but returns …
Adaptive Feedforward Control Of Wastewater Neutralization., Richard Albert Balhoff
Adaptive Feedforward Control Of Wastewater Neutralization., Richard Albert Balhoff
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is to show the development and testing of an adaptive feedforward control of a wastewater neutralization process. The adaptive controller is compared to a nonlinear proportional-integral-derivative (NPID) controller developed by Shinskey (1970). The process and controllers were simulated digitally. The adaptive controller utilizes two pH probes, a feedforward probe and a feedback probe (this measurement is used in the adaptive gain calculation). The feedback measurement provides the adaptive controller with a form of reset action. Probe noise and lag, valve hysteresis and lag, and dead time were included in the simulation. The process simulated for …
Differential Effects Of Marriage Depending Upon Sex For Students In Professional Programs., Patricia Cawunder
Differential Effects Of Marriage Depending Upon Sex For Students In Professional Programs., Patricia Cawunder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The major hypothesis of this study was that the married state conveys a performance benefit to the male student and is a detriment to the female student. Differential effects of marriage by sex were hypothesized to be related to traditional sex-role concepts such that married female students receive less spouse support and have more role conflict than the male. The hypotheses were tested with law students and veterinary medical students. Performance was measured with GPA, and measures of spouse support and role conflict were developed from weightings of judges for items in a structured telephone interview. Different results were obtained …
