The Potential For Improving Acifluorfen Efficacy By Rate Refinement And Sequential Applications (Morningglory, Cocklebur, Soybean)., Scotty Hugh Crowder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field and greenhouse studies were conducted in 1981 and 1982 to evaluate acifluorfen {5-{2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy}2-nitrobenzoic acid} efficacy in controlling morningglory (Ipomea spp.) and common cocklebur (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) in soybeans {Glycine max (L.) Merr.}. Repeated low rate applications of 0.2 kg/ha active ingredient acifluorfen were compared to single applications for control of ivyleaf morningglory {Ipomea hederacea (L.) Jacq. var: hederacea}. In field studies two applications of 0.2 kg/ha acifluorfen increased control compared to a single application of 0.6 kg/ha, based on visual ratings and fresh weight reductions in ivyleaf morningglory. In the response of ivyleaf morningglory to increasing rates of acifluorfen, …

The Influence Of Processing On The Chemical And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Water-Soluble And Salt-Soluble Proteins In Blue Crabs., Orthnell George Dowdie
The Influence Of Processing On The Chemical And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Water-Soluble And Salt-Soluble Proteins In Blue Crabs., Orthnell George Dowdie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Raw and processed Blue crab meat were investigated to determine the influence of processing temperature on the distribution of water soluble and salt soluble proteins, using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in conjunction with photodensitometry. Analysis of the raw crabmeat protein showed 30 water soluble and 45 salt soluble protein subunits. Salt soluble proteins were composed of subunits whose molecular weights were much more variable than the water soluble protein subunits. Salt soluble proteins were found to have molecular weights of 12,000-160,000 daltons, whereas the water soluble subunits were of molecular weights 12,000-130,000 daltons. There were significant differences (P < 0.001) in the changes between the number of bands present in the raw crabmeat and the number retained after processing at 100(DEGREES)C; however, the level of significance was only changed to (P < 0.05) when raw crabmeat was compared to crabmeat processed at 121(DEGREES)C in steam. Salt soluble proteins were more heat labile than the water soluble proteins. At 70(DEGREES)C, the total level of salt soluble protein was reduced 57% compared to the levels in raw meat, whereas, the water soluble proteins were reduced only 13%. Processing temperatures were found to significantly influence (P < 0.05) the pH of the processed meat as well as the water in which the crabs were processed. Correlation coefficients of r = 0.7604 and r = -0.6401 were found between changes in pH and basic and acidic groups. These coefficients were significant at (P < 0.05). Analysis of Blue crab hemolymph for copper revealed the copper content to be approximately eight times greater than quantities found in the meat. Nine proteins were found in the hemolymph with 3 of the proteins being complexed with copper (hemocyanins). The hemocyanins had molecular weights of 58,000, 71,000 and 95,000 daltons. The subunit with a molecular weight of 58,000 daltons contained approximately 65% of the total copper in the hemolymph.

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A. A two-stage atomic absorption atomizer has been designed and built. It consisted of a molybdenum tube atomizer maintained at high temperatures (2200(DEGREES)C for example) and a molybdenum tube vaporizer which was gradually heated from room temperature up to high temperatures. A sample was placed within the latter section when it was cool, and while the former was heated. Subsequently, the vaporization section was gradually heated and the evolved gases were entrained by the carrier gas through the atomization section and into the optical lightpath. Atomic absorption versus temperature curves were obtained for Pb, Zn and Cd compounds. The resultant …
The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans
The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Above all deafness constitutes a language and communication problem. A child born deaf experiences a form of double deprivation: symbolic deprivation and social interactional deprivation. Both the development of self and the construction of a world (human culture) are impeded by the lack of language. This first ethnography of a state residential school for the deaf (SSD) follows Glaser and Strauss (1967) by developing a theory from "data" systematically obtained on the field. The formulations of Goffman, Berger and Luckmann, Mead and Bernstein guided this inquiry and provided it a sense of reference. The central problem investigated in question form …

Structural Interaction Between Nitrogenase And Cell Membrane In Free-Living, Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas, Viridis, Azotobacter, Vinelandii, Rhodospirillum, Rubrum)., Karen Smith Howard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhodopseudomonas viridis grows by means of nitrogen fixation under anaerobic, photosynthetic conditions. In batch culture, nitrogenase activity was highest at early-logarithmic phase, lower during mid- to late-logarithmic phase, and nearly zero during stationary phase. Nitrogen-fixing cells were morphologically and ultrastructurally similar to non-nitrogen-fixing cells as determined by electron microscopy. Electron spin resonance (esr) spectroscopy of nitrogen-fixing whole cells yielded g4.26 and g3.66 signals indicating the presence of nitrogenase molybdenum-iron (MoFe) protein. Ammonia switch-off occurred upon addition of 0.2 mM NH(,4)Cl, however, nitrogenase activity did not reappear for nearly four hours. Esr spectroscopy of whole cell multilayers (WCM) of Azotobacter vinelandii …
