Anatomy Of The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Strain F Glycoprotein B Gene: Primary Sequence And Predicted Protein Structure Of The Wild Type And Of Monoclonal Antibody-Resistant Mutants, P. E. Pellett, K. G. Kousoulas, L. Pereira, B. Roizman

Faculty Publications

In this paper we report the nucleotide sequence and predicted amino acid sequence of glycoprotein B of herpes simplex virus 1 strain F and the amino acid substitution in the domains of the glycoprotein B gene of three mutants selected for resistance to monoclonal antibody H126-5 or H233 but not to both. Analyses of the amino acid sequence with respect to hydropathicity and secondary structure yielded a two-dimensional model of the protein. The model predicts an N-terminal, 29-amino-acid cleavable signal sequence, a 696-amino-acid hydrophilic surface domain containing six potential sites for N-linked glycosylation, a 69-amino-acid hydrophobic domain containing three segments …

Comparison Of Drug Effects On Fixed‐Ratio Performance And Chain Performance Maintained Under A Second‐Order Fixed‐Ratio Schedule, Peter J. Winsauer, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher

Faculty Publications

In one component of a multiple schedule, pigeons were required to complete the same four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three identically lighted keys in the presence of four successively presented colors (chain performance). Food presentation occurred after five completions of the chain (i.e., after 20 correct responses). Errors, such as responding on the center or right key when the left was designated correct, produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. In the other component, responding on a single key (lighted white) was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio 20 schedule. In general, phencyclidine …

Inverse Spectral Modeling Of Geopotential Fields Over Sedimentary Basins., Michael Terry Angelich Jan 1985

Inverse Spectral Modeling Of Geopotential Fields Over Sedimentary Basins., Michael Terry Angelich

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Interpretation of geopotential data using inverse spectral modeling techniques eliminates the ambiguous results produced by the standard forward-modeling approach. However, applying the spectral modeling procedures by hand is time-consuming and lacks precision. This study expands on current spectral analysis techniques by adding least-squares statistical rigor to the fitting of the chosen model. Automating the model fitting procedure allows an investigator to examine quickly many overlapping sections (windows) of mapped data. Successive overlapping of neighboring windows suggests a correlation between the ensemble-average depth solutions unique to each window is possible. This technique was shown to be especially useful in Louisiana and …

Development Of A Reliable And Valid Diagnostic Assessment Instrument For Migraine And Muscle-Contraction Headaches (Psychometrics, Classification)., Stanford Wayne Granberry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The reliability and validity of a headache questionnaire, designed as a diagnostic instrument, were investigated. The questionnaire was administered to 117 headache sufferers in individual interviews. Following a 2 week interval the same questionnaire was readministered to 66 of these subjects. All subjects were independently diagnosed by a board certified neurologist and an advanced graduate student in clinical psychology using an Ad Hoc Committee's (1962) criteria. The categories of headache investigated were: muscle-contraction headache (N = 38), combined headache (N = 28), classic migraine (N = 19) and common migraine (N = 32). A factor analysis of the questionnaire data …

T0-Spaces And Pointwise Convergence, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to give several different characterizations of those T0-spaces E with the property that if F:X × E → Y is separately continuous, then it is jointly continuous. One such is that the lattice 0(E) of open sets of E be a hypercontinuous lattice (i.e. the interval topology on 0(E) is Hausdorff). If E is a sober space, then E must be a quasicontinuous poset endowed with the Scott topology. © 1985.

The Pointwise-Local-Global Principle For Solutions Of Generic Linear Equations, William A. Adkins Jan 1985

The Pointwise-Local-Global Principle For Solutions Of Generic Linear Equations, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

The problem studied in this paper is to determine some conditions on a matrix A over a ring R which will insure that the matrix equation Au = f is solvable over R if it is solvable over the residue field {A figure is presented}({A figure is presented}) for every {A figure is presented} ∈ Spec R. If R is a regular local ring (containing a field), a polynomial ring over an algebraically close field, or the ring of holomorphic functions on a Stein manifold, then a sufficient condition on A for pointwise solvability to imply global solvability is that …

Essential Reflections Versus Minimal Embeddings, Anthony W. Hager, James J. Madden

Faculty Publications

This note addresses the following question. In a category C, with a full subcategory X which is reflective with each reflection morphism an embedding, and a C-object A: when does each X-object containing A contain the X-reflection of A? We prove, under mild hypotheses on C, the equivalence of (1) The reflection morphism for A is an essential embedding, (2) Any 'minimal' embedding of A in an X-object is the X-reflection of A, (3) 'Always' is the answer to the question above, (4) The reflection functor C → X carries embeddings of A to embeddings. We note that these conditions …

Magnetic Anisotropy In The Trenton Limestone: Results Of A New Technique, Anisotropy Of Anhysteretic Susceptibility, Chad Mccabe, Michael Jackson, Brooks B. Ellwood

Faculty Publications

A new method for determining magnetic anisotropy using anhysteric remanence susceptibility is described. The magnetic fabric of a collection of Trenton Limestone specimens has been determined using this method, as well as by conventional anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the new method for finding the magnetic fabric of rock units such as the Trenton in which the bulk magnetic susceptibilities are low. A model is proposed to explain the observed foliated and lineated fabric as a consequence of overburden compaction and regional horizontal stresses. The original fabric is inferred to have been isotropic; the anisotropy …

Environmental And Genetic Sources Of Variation For Seminal Quality In Mature Holstein Bulls, J. E. Chandler, R. W. Adkinson, G. M. Hay, R. L. Crain

Faculty Publications

Various environmental and genetic factors that influence seminal quality were evaluated for 149 Holstein bulls used extensively in nine artificial insemination organizations (studs). These bulls were sons of 16 sires. Seminal quality was measured by percent progressive motility immediately postthaw and after incubation at 3 h, 37°C, percent intact acrosomal membrane after incubation at 3 h 37°C, and percent primary and secondary abnormalities. Semen was thawed at 37 and 24°C. Spermatozoal concentration was counted with a hemocytometer. Bull age and season of collection were determined. Interaction of stud × thaw existed for both motility assessments and intact acrosomes, but 37°C …

Rejection Of Murine Heterotopic Corneal Transplants, Larry Ray-Keil, John W. Chandler Jan 1985

Rejection Of Murine Heterotopic Corneal Transplants, Larry Ray-Keil, John W. Chandler

Faculty Publications

A murine heterotopic corneal transplant model has been developed using s.c. abdominal pouches as recipient sites. Donor-recipient genetic disparities involving H-2 antigens alone or H-2 plus non-H-2 antigens result in high rates of rejection. In addition, donor-recipient disparities involving non-H-2 antigens alone or H-Y antigen also result in significant, although lower, rates of rejection. In comparison, pretreatment of the donor grafts by hyperbaric oxygen, removal of the epithelial layer, or soaking in anti-la antibody plus complement results in statistically significant reductions in the rejection rates as compared with fresh, untreated donor tissue. These observations suggest that cells bearing Ia antigens …

Studies Of Grain Boundary Structure And Annealing Behavior In Nickel Using Transmission Electron Microscopy (Tem, Dislocation)., An-Chich Chou Han Jan 1985

Studies Of Grain Boundary Structure And Annealing Behavior In Nickel Using Transmission Electron Microscopy (Tem, Dislocation)., An-Chich Chou Han

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to study grain boundary structure and dislocation reactions in annealed pure nickel sheets. In slightly annealed nickel, the dislocation content and distribution in grain boundaries were found to be random. After annealing at 800(DEGREES)C, a temperature within the recovery and recrystallization stage, the majority of grain boundaries contained periodic arrays of dislocations. The hexagonal dislocation networks with Burgers vectors of the type of a/6 were found in a large number of twin boundaries. The origin and the formation mechanisms of this configuration are discussed. The incorporation of absorbed lattice dislocations in the boundary during …

Children's Affective Expression In Human Figure Drawings: Adult Recognition Of Children's Depiction Of Six Affective Expressions., Ralph Darrell Ramsden Jan 1985

Children's Affective Expression In Human Figure Drawings: Adult Recognition Of Children's Depiction Of Six Affective Expressions., Ralph Darrell Ramsden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The understanding of children's abilities to express affect in drawings of the human figure has clinical and developmental significance, yet is an area that until recently has received relatively minimal research attention. The present study investigated the abilities of child psychologists, graduate psychology students, and non-mental health raters to correctly identify the attempts of 72 kindergarten, second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth-grade students to depict six common affective expressions in human figure drawings. The affective expressions were: happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, and fear. Thirty-six adult raters (18 female; 18 male) reviewed 216 drawings, identified the perceived affective expression, and …

The Effect Of Muscle Contraction Headache Chronicity On Frontal Emg (Psychophysiology, Tension Headache)., Eleanor Belle Callon Jan 1985

The Effect Of Muscle Contraction Headache Chronicity On Frontal Emg (Psychophysiology, Tension Headache)., Eleanor Belle Callon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The hypothesis that frontal EMG levels measured by surface electrodes change as a function of the number of years of muscle contraction headache activity was tested. Three levels of muscle contraction headache chronicity ((GREATERTHEQ)20 years, (LESSTHEQ)10 years, and none) were examined under imagined stress and a quiz falsely presented as a measure of intelligence. The two stress conditions were counterbalanced across subjects. The three groups had 10 members each and were equivalent in age and subjects' ratings of the laboratory stressors. Psychophysiological recordings were done during a headache free period. An ANOVA indicated no group effect and no group x …

Chemistry Of Plants From The Helianteae (Asteraceae) And Molluscicidal Activity And Phosphofructokinase Inhibition By Sesquiterpene Lactones (Calea, Squamopappus, Podachaenium, Biomphalaria Glabrata)., David Vargas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As part of a biochemical systematic investigation of the tribe Helianteae (Compositae) for their secondary metabolites, Calea deltophylla Cowan from the subtribe Galinsoginae, Squamopappus skutchii (S. F. Blake) Jansen, Harriman and Urbatsch, from the Ecliptinae, and Podachaenium eminens (Lagasca) Shultz-Bip. from the Verbesininae were chemically investigated. Calea deltophylla provided the known compounds ageratochromene and eupatarone and three new compounds, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyseneciophenone, caldeltophyllide and deltophyllin. Squamopappus skutchii yielded the known sesquiterpenoid (beta)-eudesmol, two new guaianolides, skutchiolides A and B, and the new eudesmanolide chapinolin. P. eminens provided three known guaianolides. The structures of the compounds were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods …

Chromatofocusing In The Purification And Separation Of Apo- And Holo-(Vitamin D-Binding Protein), M. J. Keenan, R. P. Holmes Jan 1985

Chromatofocusing In The Purification And Separation Of Apo- And Holo-(Vitamin D-Binding Protein), M. J. Keenan, R. P. Holmes

Faculty Publications

Chromatofocusing was used to purify the vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) from pig plasma in a procedure that consisted of an initial DEAE-cellulose chromatography followed by DEAE-Sephadex chromatography, with final purification by chromatofocusing. The protein was purified 184-fold over its concentration in plasma. When the plasma was labelled with a tracer concentration of [3H]calcidiol, it was apparent that holo- and apo-DBP did not co-chromatograph on chromatofocusing. The separation of these two forms of DBP on chromatofocusing was verified by using purified apo-DBP mixed with either a tracer or a saturating concentration of calcidiol. This separation was consistent with differences observed in …

Cyclotron Radiation From Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (Polarization, Plasmas, Magnetized, Stars, Herculis, Puppis)., Paul Everett Barrett Jan 1985

Cyclotron Radiation From Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (Polarization, Plasmas, Magnetized, Stars, Herculis, Puppis)., Paul Everett Barrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The absorption coefficient for the ordinary and extraordinary modes of wave propagation are calculated for cyclotron radiation from hot magnetized plasmas (kT < 50 keV). Two relativistic methods are used to calculate the absorption coefficients: the dielectric formulation and the single particle formulation. A nonrelativistic approximation which includes the effects of inverse-bremsstrahlung and Thomson scattering (collisions) is also made. The equations of radiative transfer for a homogeneous plasma, with large Faraday rotation, are solved, and simple analytic expressions for the Stokes parameters Q and V are derived in terms of the optical depths in both modes. The results are applied to the accretion columns of AM Herculis binaries. The inclusion of collisional effects in the nonrelativistic approximation reduces the amount of fractionally polarized light to levels which agree better with the observations. For small viewing angles with the magnetic field, the circular polarization does not approach 100% as is observed in the relativistic calculations without the effects of collisions. The polarization approaches a value much less than 100%. This result may provide a qualitative explanation of the standstill which observed in some AM Herculis binaries. Comparisons of theoretical and observational circular polarization curves for AM Herculis give surprisingly good agreement for a magnetic field of 2.7 x 10('7) gauss, temperature of 0.2 keV, and plasma slab thickness of 2.6 x 10('8) cm. The detection of cyclotron lines in the optical spectrum is limited to a small parameter space in magnetic field ((2-10) x 10('7) gauss), plasma temperature (< 15 keV), and direction of the accretion column (nearly perpendicular to the line of sight for extended periods of time; (TURN)10 minutes). Theoretical spectra confirm the conclusion by Wickramasinghe and Meggitt (1982) that the broad lines in VV Puppis are due to cyclotron emission, but dispute their conclusion that the addition of an unpolarized component of radiation in the blue and UV spectrum is required. A best fit to the data of VV Puppis yields a polar magnetic field of 3.15 x 10('7) gauss, a postshock temperature of 8.7 keV, and a dimensionless plasma parameter of (TURN)10('6).

The Defiant Legacy: Southern Clergy And A Rhetoric Of Redemption For The Reconstruction South., Hal W. Fulmer Jan 1985

The Defiant Legacy: Southern Clergy And A Rhetoric Of Redemption For The Reconstruction South., Hal W. Fulmer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the rhetorical activities of the unreconstructed southern Protestant clergy during the Reconstruction period of 1865-1877. These years were marked by great social, psychological, and economic chaos with a variety of southern spokesmen attempting to re-establish a sense of order for the people of the region. The clergy were an active and dominating force in the region following the Great Awakenings. These clerics were strong supporters of slavery and secession in the antebellum South. Using a theoretical approach from organizational communication, this dissertation suggests that the various southern Reconstruction denominations may be understood as a single Southern Protestant …
