Nicotinic Acid Crown Ethers: Syntheses, Characterization, Complexation, And Nadh Model Reaction (Lariat Ether, Enzyme Model)., Charles Ray Marston
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research effort dealt primarily with the synthesis of nicotinic acid derivatives, either incorporated into crown ether frameworks via 2,6-methylene bridges, or as appendage groups on nitrogen or carbon pivot lariat ethers. These crown ethers were also investigated as possible NADH mimics. During the course of this study three different types of nicotinic acid crown ethers were prepared: (1) 2,6-Methylene bridged nicotinic acid crown ethers, (2) 6-Methylene bridged nicotinic acid lariat ethers, (3) N-bridged nicotinic acid pyridinium salt lariat ethers. Various 1:1 and 2:2 isomeric macrocyclic 2,6-methylene bridged-(5,5-dimethyloxazolyl)pyridines were generated by treatment of 2,6-bis bromomethyl-3-(5,5-dimethyloxazolyl)pyridine , prepared from ethyl 2,6-dimethylnicotinate, …
Part I: Comparison Of An "As-Needed" And "Full-Season" Insecticide Application Schedule For Control Of Cotton Insects In Northeast Louisiana. Part Ii: The Utilization Of Vegetable Oil As A Carrier For Ultra-Low-Volume Aerial Sprays Applied For Cotton Insect Control., Henry Russ Mitchell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A small plot study to determine the effects of a "as-needed" and "full-season" insecticide regime on the major arthropods, growth, and yield of cotton was conducted over a three year period (1982-1984). In the "as-needed" regime, acephate (4 g/kg of seed) was applied as a seed treatment at planting and application of foliar insecticides were initiated when cotton insect pests reached the threshold level. In the "full-season" regime, aldicarb (0.05 kg/ha) was applied in-furrow at planting and application of foliar insecticides were initiated when squares reached 1/3 grown and continued on a six to seven day schedule throughout the season. …
A Theoretical Study Of Silicon-Centered Radicals (Ab Initio, Perturbation, Molecular Orbitals, Inversion Barriers, Pyramidalization)., Raymond V. Piccione
A Theoretical Study Of Silicon-Centered Radicals (Ab Initio, Perturbation, Molecular Orbitals, Inversion Barriers, Pyramidalization)., Raymond V. Piccione
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Energies and structures for a series of silicon-centered radicals were calculated by ab initio methods. The lowest energy conformation of trimethylsilyl radical is found to be pyramidal. The angle formed by an Si-C bond and the plane formed by silicon with the two other carbons is 52.6 (3-21G(,*)). The inversion barrier through the higher energy planar C(,3v) structure is calculated to be 17.8 kcal/mol. The planar C(,3h) geometry lies still higher in energy. In the planar forms of the methyl-substituted radicals, the methyl groups are slightly distorted so that the CH bond more eclipsed with the SOMO is bent away …

Evaluation Of Romanomermis Culicivorax As A Biocontrol Agent Of Larval Mosquitoes In Louisiana Ricelands (Mermithidae, Nematode, Psorophora Columbiae, Parasitism)., Todd Warner Walker
Evaluation Of Romanomermis Culicivorax As A Biocontrol Agent Of Larval Mosquitoes In Louisiana Ricelands (Mermithidae, Nematode, Psorophora Columbiae, Parasitism)., Todd Warner Walker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bionomic data were collected to evaluate Romanomermis culicivorax as a biocontrol agent of larval mosquitoes in Louisiana ricelands. In laboratory studies, the ability of R. culicivorax preparasites to infect Psorophora columbiae larvae substantially decreased after hosts were approximately 28 hr old. Parasitism at typical Louisiana rice field temperatures of 26, 29, and 32 (+OR-) 0.5(DEGREES)C showed a significant linear decrease (P < 0.01) as the percentage of older larval instars increased at the times of exposure. These data emphasized the need for a synchronous field application of preparasites to challenge the rapidly developing early instars of Ps. columbiae. Based on those data, applications of postparasites to potential mosquito breeding habitats offer greater flexibility in larval mosquito control programs. A floating bioassay container, constructed of plastic pipe, 50 mesh screening, and 8 oz (0.24 liter) sample bottles, was developed to evaluate R. culicivorax postparasites in irrigated agricultural land. Applications of postparasites applied at dosage rates of 0.025 and 0.05 g/m('2) resulted in the establishment, recycling, and overwintering of R. culicivorax in a riceland habitat in southern Louisiana. Infection rates ranged from 0 to 54.1% during the 22 month study. There was no significant differences (P > 0.05) between dosage rates among the plots and parasitism of Ps. columbiae larvae held in the bioassay containers. Depth of oviposition by R. culicivorax was determined by using soil cores previously inoculated with postparasites. Romanomermis culicivorax was found to …

The Impact Of Individual Species And Complexes Of Pest Arthropod Species On Soybean Grown On Various Row Spacings (Insect Pest Complexes, Non-Conventional Row Spacing)., Jaime Yanes Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During 1982 and 1983, selective soil and foliar insecticides were applied to soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, planted on narrow (51 cm) and wide (76 cm) row spacings to manipulate soybean insects. Individual species and complexes of arthropod species were manipulated in plots to determine the effects of subterranean and above-ground insects on soybean growth and yield potential. Selective insecticides used in a selective manner proved to be an effective tool for studying insect pest complexes. Sub-threshold levels of individual pest species, in combination, had a significant negative impact on yield. In addition, in 1982, the plots in which soybean …

Alternative Regimes Of Common Property Exploitation For Manganese Nodules And Their Market Structure Impact., Akbar Barzegar Marvasti
Alternative Regimes Of Common Property Exploitation For Manganese Nodules And Their Market Structure Impact., Akbar Barzegar Marvasti
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As a result of the technological and financial changes in the extraction of manganese nodules from the deep-seabed, the nodules have been recognized as an alternative source of minerals to land-based sources. The commercial interest in the extraction of the nodules is primarily for their nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. Three sources of uncertainty, however, have prevented involved consortia from entry into the actual production stage. These uncertainties are of a technological, economic, and legal nature. In spite of these difficulties, most experts maintain that the nodules are likely to be mined before the end of the century. The choice …
Influence Of Vegetation Manipulation And Selected Cultural Practices On Predation In Louisiana Sugarcane Ecosystems (Saccharum, Sorghum, Solenopsis, Spiders, Araneae)., Ahmed Daoud Ali
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A 3-yr study on southeastern Louisiana sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L. 'CP 65-357') revealed abundance and diversity of both ground- and foliage-associated predators and prey to be higher in weedy than in weed-free habitats. The imported fire ant (IFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, major predator of the key insect pest, the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.) , was more abundant in weedy (17 mounds/ha) than in weed-free (5 mounds/ha) habitats. Azinphosmethyl, commonly used for D. saccharalis control, decreased system stability through food web route disruption by decreasing coleopterans, phytophagous insects collectively, and spiders 51, 35, and 67%, respectively. Cane and sugar yields …
An Empirical Inquiry Into The Variation Of Interest Rates, 1959-1983 (Time Series Analysis, Spectral, Money Supply, Inflation Rate)., Umit Erol
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The empirical relationships among nominal interest rates, the inflation rate, and the money supply are examined for the period, 1959-1983. Monthly data are analyzed. The analysis of these relations specifically focuses on (1) the determination of the causal order between the variables and (2) the estimation of empirical lag distributions. The Gibson test, the Granger test, the Box-Jenkins test, and the Haugh test are used for these purposes. In addition, vector autoregressive-moving average models are estimated to determine how the variables are correlated. Finally, spectral analysis is used to determine the periodic movements of interest rates and to test if …

The Behavioral Ecology Of The First Instar Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.) (Aggregation, Pheromone, Embryo, Egg, Nymph)., Jeffrey Alan Lockwood
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Outer row embryos of the southern green stick bug, Nezara viridula (L.), orient toward the center of the egg mass; inner row embryos do not. Embryonic orientation was mediated by stimuli provided by the glue which holds the egg mass together. Physical and chemical orientation cues associated with the glue were present only on the inner surfaces of outer row eggs; other eggs received no such differential stimuli and therefore oriented as a function of the oviposition behavior of the female. Embryonic orientation assured that upon hatching, outer row nymphs received the stimulation necessary for arrestment and inclusion in the …

Synthesis, Reactivity And Stereochemistry Of Silacyclohexanes And Their Derivatives., Binh Thanh Nguyen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A number of 1,5-dibromoalkanes have been prepared by using the von Braun degradation method. The ring closure reaction of the diGrignard reagents derived from 1,5-dibromoalkanes and dichlorosilane derivatives were carried out to give C-methylated 1-methyl-1-silasubstituted-1-silacyclohexanes. Since C-methylated 1-chloro-1-substituted-1-silacyclohexanes were available as a mixture in which one isomer predominated greatly, reaction stereochemistry was studied. The stereochemistries of a number of nulceophilic dispalcement reactions of C-methylated 1-methyl-1-silasubstituted-1-silacyclohexane have been investigated. Inversion of configuration was observed upon reduction with LiAlH(,4) in ether, of the chloride, bromide, fluoride and also upon dispalcement of chloride and fluoride with organometallic reagents such as PhLi and PhMgBr. …

In 1980 the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts No. 2: Qualitative Characteristics of Accounting Information. This Statement provides characteristics that, according to the Board, are the qualities that make accounting information useful. Nine of these qualitative characteristics are examined in a questionnaire study to determine if they are operational, comprehensive, and parsimonious. Operationality refers to the ability of accountants to actually use the characteristics when choosing accounting methods. Comprehensiveness refers to the set of characteristics being a complete one. If none of the qualitative characteristics expressed in the Statement are redundant the set is considered …
Specific Polymer Supports For Electroactive Reagents (Electrodes)., Amnard Sittattrakul
Specific Polymer Supports For Electroactive Reagents (Electrodes)., Amnard Sittattrakul
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Electrode activity can be controlled by coating the electrode surface with aptly designed polymeric redox compounds. A short review of the literature concerning chemically modified electrodes (CME's) is presented. Although many techniques for producing CME's have been reported, little attention has been paid to the role played by the polymer matrix in controlling electroactivity. In this work, ferrocene functional groups have been incorporated into a series of polymers with varying glass transitions and polarity and the electroactivity of the ferrocene moieties has been evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. General methods are described for the synthesis and characterization of chloromethylated polymers. The …

Literature As Phenomenon: Attribution Theory And The Act Of Performance (Oral, Interpretation, Pre-Formance, Newcomb, Bakhtin)., John Walthall Creagh Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Attribution theory seeks to explain the ways in which humans ascribe causes to everyday events, especially the observed behavior of other human beings. This study seeks to apply the basic patterns of social attribution to the act of "pre-formance"--the aesthetic act in which a performer engages the voice of a literary text and, through rehearsals involving attribuiton, embodies that voice for some audience. Theodore Newcomb's "symmetry theory," a model that contains the essential features of human attribution, is discussed within the philosophical perspective of phenomenology, and the transformed model is used as the basis for a new theory of the …

Permethrin And Fenvalerate Hydrolysis In Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker) And Heliothis Virescens (F.)., Patrick Francis Dowd
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fenvalerate, and cis- and trans-permethrin were hydrolyzed by eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of P. includens and H. virescens. Hydrolysis (per larva) increased logarithmically to a maximum in last instars for the three pyrethroids in both insect species. trans-Permethrin hydrolysis was maximal in midguts, fat bodies, and cuticles of last instar P. includens in the late feeding stage. Changes in rates of hydrolysis appeared to influence toxicity. The midgut of both P. includens and H. virescens was generally the most active tissue in hydrolyzing the three pyrethroids tested. trans-Permethrin was generally hydrolyzed more rapidly than cis-permethrin or fenvalerate. cis- and …

Africanized And European Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Pollen And Nectar Foraging Behavior And Honey Production In The Neotropics (Venezuela)., Daniel Pesante
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A one year study was conducted on pollen collection, nectar foraging, and honey production of Africanized and European honey bees in the neotropics (Venezuela). Africanized bees had a larger proportion of their foraging force foraging for pollen and therefore collected significantly larger quantities of pollen. This higher amount of collected pollen provides the protein necessary to support increased brood production and thereby increases the opportunities for Africanized colonies to cast multiple swarms through an annual cycle. Distinctly different patterns in nectar foraging by Africanized and European bees were detected. Africanized bees had lower proportions of the foraging force engaged in …

Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner
Faculty Publications
Salt marshes are widely believed to serve as nurseries for many fishes and crustaceans of fishery value as a result of the high production of vascular plant detritus and the protection from predation offered by shallow, spatially complex habitats. Comparisons of the yields of species which reside in salt marsh habitats during critical life history stages (such as penaeid shrimp) with the area of such habitats and their greater densities in flooded marshes and associated tidal creeks support the premise that marshes enhance the yield of such species. A range of evidence, including the amount of detrital export from marshes, …
